Mac Pro quit reading DVD +/-R

One of our Mac Pros has quit reading burnt DVDs. The DVDs will work on other Machines (one that is identical). I took this to the Apple Store, and they replaced the optical drive, but it still will not read the burnt DVDs.
I've done a software update and tried resetting the PRAM. Any other suggestions before I call the Apple Store back? It is running the latest version of Snow Leopard.
Thanks

I actually seem to have fixed my problem (*knocks on wood*)
I first resetted my PRAM (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379)
Which resulted in 2 DVDs being read
Then I simply tried a CD lens cleaner which solved the problem
At least for now

  • Macbook Pro not reading DVDs

My Macbook Pro will read CDs but not DVDs or executable DVDs. Is it a setting or hardware problem?

I've had my MBP since September 09, watched many area 4 dvds, but 6 months ago it started having problems w dvd's... either it would take forever to recognize the movies, or would just spin in the computer... not even ejecting. I recently purchased the family pack of Snow Lepoard 10.6.3, to catch my Mac Pro up to date, and also hoping my MBP's dvd problems would be fixed... no go! The MBP won't even read the Leopard install dvd!!!!!!! It spins for a few minutes, then ejects (well, at least it ejects, bc any movies I put now, just spin for hours). I thought if I copied the contents of the Leopard to pendrive, and then from there installed it, perhaps it'd work. No go. I tried reading the dvd from my Mac Pro, using the mac pro as a slave via firewire to my MBP. No Go. Just says that "Instal MAC OSx cannot be used from this volume". Ok, so perhaps this is not the right way to go about this, but obviuosly there is a real problem w the MBP dvd drive. The only disks the MBP reads are audio cds. From what I read here, many people are having problems w MBP dvd drives... Mac needs to get a solution to us quick! I havn't tried a cleaning disk, bc I afraid I'll never get the disk out of my MBP... I mean if it won't read the OSx install disk, imagine what a disk w little feathers on it will do.. probably explode my laptop! What a bumber this is turning out to be!!!! I will try compressed air, but I doubt it will have an effect. Any other ideias?

Hi, my Mac pro will not eject the blank disc i inserted into the drive, I am running lion and it keeps trying to read the disc and makes everything freeze.
you cannot reset or shut down the machine properly unless you hold down the power button.
is their a Physical emergancy eject on the mac pro desktop or a way to get the diwc out?
Yes I have tried ejecting uning terminal and disk utility will not open becouse of the DVD drive.

You have added too much junk:

If you want Apple to address your problems, the first requirement is to reproduce the problem with no third-party kernel extensions present.
Most users find that when the eliminate the third-party kernel extensions, they eliminate the kernel panics.
The black screens could also be caused by your graphics card beginning to go.

  • Early 2009 mac pro not recognizing DVD drives

My Mac Pro 8 core since upgrading to Mavericks is not recognizing my Blu Ray drive unless I unplug it and re plug it in while hot.....what is this issue?

I think I have a similar sitch. I just bought a rMPB 15 with Mavericks and hooked it up to the same setup of my old 2009 17" MPB. I inserted the Logic Pro 9 install disk in my external LaCie DVD RW drive and the light on the front keeps flashing steadily as if the disk is being read but it never mounts on the desktop. I ejected the disk and installed the Logic Studio Audio Content 1 disk and it mounted fine. I inserted the Logic Pro 9 install disk into the drive on the old 17" and it mounted fine there as well. So I am at a loss as to what the glitch is and I can't be sure if its the DVD RW drive, the rMPB itself, Mavericks, or both or neither or....????

  • Help! My Mac Pro only reads 1.86GB out of 6GB in Windows 7 32-bit

I'm having issues with my Mac Pro not being able to read all my memory in windows 7 32-bit. I know that 32 bit OS can only read up to 3.5GB or something like that, but mine is only reading 1.86GB out of the 6GB i have installed. I've installed all the necessary drivers from the Mac OS X CD and updated everything.
Im stuck and now i dont know what to do! Help!

Home Premium only supports one physical processor, not two like you have. My guess is it doesn't see the RAM on the 2nd processor daughter card. To use two cpus you need Windows 7 Pro.
Besides which you really should be looking at 64-bit anyway, and all retail versions of 7 come with both DVDs.

  • My Mac Pro will read thumb-drive but not CF card reader

Can someone help me resolve this problem?
I just erased everything off my Mac Pro and reconfigured everything (as new). I installed all my programs, primarily Aperture3 and Photoshop CS5
    (using Leopard).
I had NO problem uploaded some photos into Aperture3 from a thumb drive using the USB port, BUT,
when I tried to upload photos from my card reader the MacPro does not recognize the card reader using the same USB port.
I figured the problem was a bad card reader, so I tested it on my PC and it recognized the card reader and uploaded all the photos.
Also, the card reader's green light turns on when attached to the MacPro, as if it is working and connected but it does not register in Finder or desktop to indicate that the card reader is installed.
I even tried to upload directly from my Canon 7D and it also did NOT recognize the camera.
Why would the MacPro recognize the thumb drive on the same USB port and not the card reader or the camera?
    Please help!

  • Mac Pro quits after 30 minutes of use!?

    Hello,
I'm having a problem with a group of Mac Pro towers that are set up in a lab. The problem is:
The machine abruptly goes into a power save mode, the display goes black and
is impossible to wake. The computer is still on but inaccessible and the only way
to wake the machine is through a hard restart.
The problem has been occurring intermittently and randomly since last Spring. The specs on those machines are:
MacPro, 2x3 GHz Quad core – Intel Xeon
    2 GB Ram
    OS 10.6.6
The machine used to be attached to a
Dell 2407WFPb LCD monitor but has since been replaced with an
    Acer - 24" Widescreen Flat-Panel TFT-LCD HD Monitor
The problem has caused a lot of issues and been a real beast to try to
troubleshoot as it occurs randomly. Lately it seems to have gotten worse, I was able to recreate it and it is now occurring after approx. 30 minutes of use. Here's a list of what I've tried (unsuccessfully).
    - Turned monitor on/off.
    - Unplugged monitor from power supply.
    - Unplugged DVI cable from Mac Pro and reinserted
    - Tried both DVI ports
    - Tried a different monitor
    - Changed energy settings on computer to NEVER
    - Repaired permissions
    - SMS reset
    - Updated to Snow Leopard
    - Computer put on new UPS
    - Tried VGA cable with VGA to DVI adaptor (because read that the DVI could be
    an issue)
    - Wiped machine and did clean install of Snow Leopard, FCP, CS5 and Microsoft Office
    - Bought new fleet of monitors (because researched that this problem occurred
fairly regularly with this model of Dell monitor and because this problem never
occurred with machine attached to Apple Cinema Display)
    Please help!

Are you having this problem with all the MP's, or only one?
The problem occurs more regularly on 4 of the six MP's we have. Two of the fleet have never experienced it, the rest have the problem intermittently.
Is there some reason why you're still running 10.6.6?
No, just haven't updated to 10.6.7 yet, BUT, one machine is 10.6.7 and still has the issue
Besides what you mentioned, are you running any other third-party software? Nope
Are any other peripherals connected? Nope
Are there any error messages in the system log?
Not sure, I attached an image of the log right before the crash but I'm not sure what it means!
Is there a panic log or an application crash log? Nope

  • Mac Pro Not Reading Toshiba External HDD

I have a *Toshiba USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive (200 GB)*, and I've been using it just fine on my PC with Windows XP for months now.
I tried plugging it in today into my newly purchased Mac Pro, and it appeared just fine on my desktop, but when I double-clicked it to view the contents, my data and such was all there, but I couldn't access anything. If I opened up a folder to see it's contents, all I got was a blank folder with a spinning "Busy" graphic at the bottom right hand of the corner. No individual files would appear at all ever.
I would try disconnecting, re-plugging it in, and then at sometimes it wouldn't even register on the desktop. I had to try various USB ports on the Mac Pro to hope and try to get it to re-appear again.
One time I was actually able to view all the contents on my harddrive. I tried to access an MP3 on there, it loaded up iTunes, but iTunes locked up on me, and I couldn't close out of it nor eject my hard drive.
When I "Get Info" on my external hard drive icon on the desktop, the format is MS-DOS(FAT32).
I am running Mac OS X version 10.5.2.
Any ideas of what the problem is? I am absolutely stumped and upset.

I am having the same problem with my macbookpro. However, I am not even getting a desktop icon--i.e. its not even mounting. It doesnt show on the disk utilities, nothing. I have power, according to the led on the drive. The usb portworks on my iphone, and with myprinter. What gives?
    Andrej, any thoughts?
To the originator of this thread, have you gone to your disk utilities and formatted it?

Another help source (if you haven't already done so).
Go to your OS Help Menu.  In the search field type dvd
Click on all the troubleshooting topics & Support Articles that pertain to  your issue.
You can also do the same in Disk Utility.  Open same up.
At the bottom left of the window, click on the purple button w/the "?" in the middle.
This will bring up the Help Menu.

  • I bought dragon dictate with my mac pro. NO DVD DRIVE.. now what do i do?

Can I return it and just get the dragon express in apps? My mom got this Mac book for school and I am paralyzed. I need a talk to text app. She bought the Dragon and we did not know the mac did not have a dvd drive (this is my first mac) PLEASE HELP. CAn we return the dragon dictate?

    You have a couple options.
Depending on where and when you purchased the Dragon software, they will possibly, even likely, allow you to return the software if it is unopened.  If you've already opened the packaging, it will obviously be more difficult to return.  In that case, you might try reaching out to the folks at Dragon and explaining the situation.  If they use license/activation numbers, it should be pretty easy for you to prove to them you haven't activated the software, and they might swap it or offer a refund.
Another option is to use an external DVD drive to install the software.  You could purchase such a device (newegg.com, amazon.com, apple.com).  Or, a better option would be to visit an Apple store, and ask them to install the software for you.  That won't cost you a dime.
Don't fret!  There are plenty of good solutions available to you.  Good luck!

  • HT3231 Transferring photos from PC to Mac Pro using a DVD-R Disk

I've downloaded some photos from my PC onto a DVD-R disk and my MacPro does not recognize that disk.  What am I doing wrong?

    Patricia 90 wrote:

You don't download files to an optical disc, you write them (or, informally, burn them) to the optical disc.
and my MacPro does not recognize that disk.
What exactly happens when you insert the disc? Is the DVD-R not mounted on the desktop, although Finder prefs are set to display such devices on the desktop?
    What am I doing wrong?
Hard to say without more details. What application did you use on PC to write the DVD-R? What format did you use? By and large Mac OS X should be able to use the usual data formats (UDF, ISO9660). But you will have problems with packet-writing (InCD, DLA).

  • My mac is not reading dvd's

    Hi there,
I have tried to watch a few non pirated DVD's in the last few days and my mac is not recogising any of them and after several attempts to load, spits them out.
Any ideas as to whats going on?

Check Finder > Preferences > General
Make sure CDs, DVDs, and iPods is selected.
Make sure the disc is free of fingerprints and dust.
And try restarting your Mac and try again.

  • G4 quit reading DVDs

I just brought home a Lacie DVD-CD burner setup. I don't do video or music, but will use the setup to burn client CDs and back up jobs that are often a couple of MBs.
Problem is ~ my internal CD-DVD drive doesn't see the Lacie install disc. I think I blew the wheels off my DVD reading capability when I upgraded to 9.2.2 last year. I used to be able to watch DVDs on my G4, but not any more.
I had been using a really lame Iomega HotBurn setup that finally bit the biscuit (and this only in desperation when my old Que drive gave it up). I really need for this new setup to work, and quick. It should install Toast 5.2.2 Lite and something called SilverKeeper 1.1.4 ~ if I can just read the flippin' DVD.
Major TIA, and it's sure good to find I'm not alone with my OS.

    Hi, LeaHilty -
Make sure you have the Apple DVD Player utility available. OS's 9.2.1 and 9.2.2 use the same version of that program, v. 1.3.
You can use the utility TomeViewer to extract (expand) any files you want from an Installation Tome on an OS Install CD or download disk image, without running the installer.
    How to use TomeViewer
Version 1.3 of Apple DVD Player can be found in the Installation Tome on an OS 9.2.1 Install CD and in the OS 9.2.1 download update.
Make sure, too, that the File Exchange control panel is active in Extensions Manager, and that these extensions are physically present in the Extensions folder in System Folder (not all will appear in Extensions Manager) -
    Apple CD/DVD Driver
    Apple Photo Access
    Audio CD Access
    Foreign File Access
    ISO 9660 File Access
    UDF Volume Access
    <hr>
It is possible you have DVD Player v. 2.7. If so, look in the DVD Player folder - if you find the files DVD Navigation Manager v. 1.3 and DVDRuntimeLib v. 1.3 in there, throw them away. The correct versions of those (2.7) should be in the Extensions folder.
It may also help to install or re-install DVD Player v. 2.7 -
    Apple DVD Player 2.7
