Mac Pro Restore CDs

Hi,
I've just bought a used Mac Pro (original spec, Jan 07) and it's come with Leopard installed as the previous owner upgraded from Tiger. However, he doesn't have the OS system disks just in case I need to reinstall.
I also have a Mac Mini (Jan 09) which came with Leopard, so my question is can those Leopard software restore disks that came with the Mini also be used on my Mac Pro in case of an emergency, or do I need to contact Apple for something more specific?
Any advice welcome...
Mark

Purchasing Full Leopard will give you the license to run Leopard.
It won't necessarily give you a version of iLife compatible with your Mac to be able to restore, nor license to install iLife, unless you get the Leopard box set. Same with iWork. Full Leopard does not include the hardware test that came with your Mac either. This article explains more about the iLife limitation:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1490798&tstart=10
And this one tells you which versions work with which Macs:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TA27615
The original discs include both iLife that was bundled with your Mac, and hardware test.
You can examine the Tiger operating system's permissions, and directory with the Tiger discs that were bundled with your Mac. Leopard will be able to do both as well with Tiger, and Leopard. The Tiger discs themselves won't be able to examine Leopard if installed on your Mac.

  • Can I use a mac pro operating system disk to upgrade a macbook

I need to upgrade my 10.5.8 system to 10.6 before I can upgrade to Lion. I have a mac pro operating system disk for 10.6 can I use this?

No. The gray-colored restore DVDs provided with a Mac are not the retail OS version. They contain only the drivers applicable for the purchased hardware, and the installer has a function to verify the hardware is of the type the disk was created for. If you attempt to use the Mac Pro restore disk on a different model Mac, it will simply refuse to install.

  • I am going to restore my Macbook Pro to it's factory condition. In iTunes I have renamed a lot of my songs. Last time I cleaned off my mac and restored my music I had to rename all those songs again. How do I get itunes to remember all of those names?

I am going to restore my Macbook Pro to it's factory condition. I do this every once in a while because it seems to improve performance. I backup everything to an external drive and then I restore only what I want from my backup drive. In iTunes I have renamed a lot of my songs. Last time I cleaned off my mac and restored/reloaded my music I had to rename all those songs again. It took me about 2 weeks to reorganize my music. How do I get iTunes to remember all of those names and keep everything exactly the same when I restore/reload the music into iTunes?

It may seem like it does but it really doesn't.
Just delete stuff you don't want.

Use Time Machine, backup everything, do the reinstall (I recommend you don't do it) then restore your user folder with Time Machine.

  • I have a Mac Pro using Lion, with a SSD for system.  Restored drive from backup.  Now logon password doesn't work.  Account password still works.  Changing password in user group preferences no longer works to change logon password.

I have a Mac Pro using Lion, with SSD for system drive.  Drive stopped booting, but otherwise appeared healthy.  Restored from system backup.  Now drive seems to work properly, BUT my logon password no longer works.  Password OK for account; can access system preferences, and change user password there BUT logon still refuses to accept password.  No luck changing password for that account after adding new administrator account and logging on from that account.  Suggestions?  Thanks.

If you redirect Accounts to another location (not on the Boot Drive) you need to direct them back there again after a restore.
    SystemPreferences > Accounts/User&Groups > ...
... Unlock the lock, then hold down Control as you click on an Account to get access to the Advanced Options pane.

  • Restore Time machine backup from a stolen computer to a different Mac Pro

*My Mac Book Pro was stolen.* It had some Time Machine backups, but Time Machine had stopped working about 6 months before it was stolen. I had stopped using the USB drive since TM would never complete. (2 issues)
    1. When I plugged in this USB backup disk to the Mac Pro just now, it asked me whether to use Time Machine with it. It told it no, ask me later so I could browse it first.
    2. It looks like the old problem with Time Machine not backing up the stolen laptop shows up as a file called "2008-09-22.204132.inProgress". I am hoping that the backups previous to that one are okay. So far, browsing the files appears to me that my data is intact but perhaps spread across 40 folders.
So now, what should I do to retrieve the data I want?
    A. Copy the data files and pictures manually without Time Machine? How do I know I will get the latest versions?
    B. Use Time Machine with this disk and somehow ask TM to restore to a different machine? (Is that even possible?) (Will it merge the files into my user folders?)
    C. Use Migration Assistant?
    D. Copy and paste the entire file structure to a directory someplace and pull off the data as I need it?
*End result: I want my external hard disk wiped ASAP, and in the meantime I want my data files preserved.*
The old MacBook Pro definitely did not have Snow Leopard but the MacPro does to which I want to copy the data. It probably had Leopard. But honestly my user data is not necessary, just primarily the data, pictures, DVD projects, etc.
As a side note: My old laptop and my MacPro used the same username and password.

start Migration Assistant located in /Application/Utilies. it has an option to migrate your data and applications from a TM backup. migrate what you want. note that users will be migrated to new users so to access your old home directory you'll have to log out and log in as the migrated user.

You will need to boot from some alternate boot device to accomplish this, if you did not initialize the drive before installing it.
If you have another Mac, you may be able to use FireWire target disk mode.
If your MacBook has a DVD reader and you have a Mac OS X Installer/Utilities DVD, such as the one that shipped with it, you can boot from that DVD, answer only the "what Language" question, and wait a quarter minute for the MenuBar to be drawn. Then examine the Utilities menu or the Installer menu and Find Disk Utility.

  • Drive On Mac Pro Won't Open For Firmware Restoration?

    Hi--
My Mac Pro (early 2008 model, OS 10.6.8) has recently begun having problems that seem firmware-related. When put in "Sleep" mode overnight, it wakes up on its own after about two hours of sleep and remains awake.  Also, from time to time it will display the prompt window ("Do You Want To Shut Down?") for a hard (button) shutdown---without the button having been pressed. Resetting the SMC and the PRAM solves the problem for awhile, but it's becoming necessary to do that more and more frequently---at first, the problem occured about every six months, then weekly, until now I'm getting the shutdown prompt and have to reset the SMC almost every day.
Internet searches of this and other forums have indicated that a possible solution is restoring the firmware.  I have made a Firmware Restoration CD but I cannot get the machine to recognize it. That is, when I press and hold the startup button I get the "three long-three short-three-long" beeps; according to Apple's FAQ on ths subject, the optical drive door should then open and allow me to insert the Firmware Restoration disk, but that doesn't happen--the computer just goes right on with the normal startup sequence.
    Please advise.

all I can do is tell you what I've learned here-try either one of these-hold down the shift key on startup/hold down the mouse on startup/if not,  See if you can boot up in single user mode/reset NVRAM,(command option, o+F)on reboot . Failing that....pull down the optical drive door, and using a straightened extra study paperclip, find the small hole near the optical drive tray. Stick that paperclip in and the tray should open up just enough for you to grab it and put the cd in there. Maybe then, start up holding down the C key......
    just a guess though
    Good luck to you

Apple Senior tech lady deleted all my external drive data while sorting out other problem. How can I restore all my photos , music etc back to my Mac Pro?(I am so scared, I haven't connected iPhone to sync! Please help)

It was tele tech. I couldn't open my Page Numbers etc. Frist tech chat idiot - following dumping few things in bin, asked me yo upgrade to Yosemite. But the problem still persists. This morning I was asked to do it via telephone and like yesterday, after wasting 20 min, I was put to this apparent Tech Queen ( my foot!). She eventually decided to reinstall  Yosemite asked me to connect my external drive while I connected to her. She was moving cursor asking me to move files and delete and I followed her like a dummy. It took 3/4 hours and she called me 3 times once the lengthy process was completed. I suspected from the beginng for the fact that why should be asking me to click all my backup from the very beginning! Eventually she said I deleted... Or someone else or may be my children ! It was a blatant lie. I run my small business from home and I was simply staying in front of the Mac whole day! Children were at school. Then she said I must have used another computer! I only have laptop and the iPad. I will talk to their manager first thing in the morning. In the mean time please let me know as to how can I transfer photos, music etc back to my laptop from my Iphone and IPad .? I am will connect to laptop as I am worried the new BLANK iPhoto may supersede iphone/iPad stuff? Will it? Please let me know. I am not a very tech savvy person. My son who could help me, is in Manchester Uni and Inam in London.

Delete all back ups on MacBook and create new back up. Restart his MB and attempt to restore again. Do not forget to erase your iphone 5 before restore.

  • Backup failed - error occurred while copying..  Mac Pro after restore

    Hi gang.
After the most recent EFI Mac Pro firmware update, along with a software update... I could not reboot - got the prohibitary sign. After some time on the phone with Applecare senior tech, i did an erase install from disk with a restore from TM. Seemed to fix my issue, and could reboot as per usual, but I then began getting TM failures with...
"The backup was not performed because an error occurred while copying files to the backup disk."
It also said to try again later, restart, and use Disk Utility to repair the TM volume. I did all of these (no probs in Disk Utils) and got the same issue... I decided to give up my month of backups, and finally erased the disk, and time machine got through 2/3 of the 1.37tb of data on the 2tb disk before I got the same message. Tried again and got more data between more failure messages. It's now down to what it thinks is 3.07gb of data as it begins to copy, and copies to 4.36 gb of data, then says it is cleaning up, then fails with the same message... again and again. The drives being backed up and the TM hard drive are all internal disks. Any hints on how to get this working properly?
    Thanks
    Dave

I migrated to my Mac Pro from a G5 several months ago... my boot drive is a 2x100gb solid state drive array. Everything was working flawlessly until I installed an EFI firmware update, and some software updates a few days ago, and my machine would not reboot. I had to erase and install from install disks, and restore from a TM backup from that morning. The catch is that the disk I installed to had some recovered files (data rescue) from trying to save my sister's Powerbook G4 hard drive... and it's possible that invisible files were picked up when I Carbon Copy Cloned that install disk back to my Raid Array boot drive. ???
I tried excluding the usr/bin folder, and got the same error... with other usr folders showing in console error -34... so I excluded the usr folder, and so far I am 160gb through a 1.2tb backup with no issues. I'll let you know.
I also did a disk util repair permissions on my boot raid, and got a host of issue including some unrepairable things.... I will reboot on a different disk and do a repair disk... but here's what it said-

    Yes.

  • Only select audio cds work with my mac pro.

When I put most of my audio cds in the slot the icon will pop up but then it flickers around the page. I can click on it and it will ask me if I want to download it to itunes. I click yes but then it disappears and nothing happens.

    Hi Fred,
usually any 3.5" form-factor SATA-connected harddisk works in a Mac Pro.
So I don't see any reason for this harddisk not to work.

  • Mac Pro not booting after restore.

Hi. Hopefully someone can help me here.
Tried a total system restore from my leapard Install disk to a recent time machine backup of Snow Leopard 6.4 after a mishap with Mac Keeper (easily done I tell you)
The drive seemed slow and unresponsive even before this and had initially spat out my two Snow Leopard install disks but I managed to boot from previous original Leopard disk after I shut the machine down for a while. Using utilities, I found the back-up required and started restoring some 435gigs worth which took 18 hours. At times the drive seemed to go to sleep. I was beginning to think that the drive was just about hanging in there with the odd behaviour that had recently happened. I had initially thought the disks must have been scratched but it was stating it could not read other disks too so I guess there is a definite drive problem going on.
Anyway, eventually the next day my sceen stated that the mac was restored. Tried to boot. Gray sceen of death.  Telling me to shut down and reboot. Happened every time. Tried starting command +S.where it's stating "Mac OS not yet set". It wont let me type anything. Tried rebooting from leopard again to see what disk utility was finding. All seemed OK. The computer is seeing the drives and the content amounts. Tries varifying/repairing disks.  all OK. Tried repairing permissions on sysem drive which finished in a split second.  I'm thinking of changing the superdrive and backing up again but this may not be the problem at all. I did have a file that said previous system on the Mac for some reason separate to the system it was using. Could that be a problem here. Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks James
    Mac Pro - Snow Leopard 10.6.4  (2006-2008)

    Hi
    Thanks for replying.
Yes I booted from Leopard install disk as the dvd drive wasn't seeing either of my Snow Leopard ones.
From utilities menu I restored a time machine backup that I had done just before using Mac Keeper. This was meant to be a complete system install as I didn't know what files Mac keeper had moved. Though it took a long time, it finally stated that it was restored and I thought I was back in business. However gray screen shut down after a few 3 seconds of Apple appearing everytime.
The DVD drive is not letting me boot on leopard install everytime either. Any thoughts
