Mac pro running 10.6 won't boot

My Mac pro is late (2007) running OSX 10.6 (should be newest update). Can't get in to see any if my specs to give you more info. Mac keeps rebooting I tried resetting PRam, booting into safe mode, booting into firmware and booting from CD none of which I can do. I did manage to get into it and copy files I needed to save, so reinstalling is fine but it can't even boot into the cd. I've tried holding option on startup - nothing. I've unplugged everything restarted countless times - sometimes I get the chime sometimes I don't mostly it stats on the grey screen of death. I have 4 internal drives and no I don't have an OS backup currently. Company pays for my computer and they've gone all cheap on me had to spend my own money upgrading harddrives a few months ago. No excuses for the lack if backup I know. I am at a loss Apple Care has expired. If I can just get it to boot to the cd I can repair or reinstall but even that's not working. Please help.

Ok thanks so much for your quick reply. Both my install disks look pretty rough so I'm gonna take one up to the video store for refurbishing as a last ditch effort. I think that may be it because at first boot up it shows the apple then it switches to the no symbol. Anyway thanks again if this works I'll let you know. Jen

  • Mac Pro Dual Quad Core won't boot OS/X, but plays fine with Linux/Windows

I've got a Mac Pro Dual Quad Core won't boot OS/X, but plays fine with Linux/Windows. I've tried all of the following initial tests as suggested on forums:
    -Ram swaps
-Alternating video card in PCIe slots
    -Trying alternate video card
    -resetting pram and smc
-Multiple tests with memtest86+ over 26hrs and no failed ram
-Multiple tests (8-12 cycles) with apple HW diagnostics and no problems
-Firmware is approved firmware for early 2008 model...no new updates.
Gentoo livecd works fine and I even installed to hard drive and it boots fine with it. In addition to above tests I also ran a linux stress test putting all 8 cores at a load of 22 for 2.5hrs with no problems.
Memtest86+ for 24hrs+ yields no problems.
    Where problems occur:
Booting off hard drive, DVD or firewire yields an immediate curtain of death and booting off a new snow leopard DVD dies about 25% into the install.
Looking at error log and a quick dmesg shows "Package 0 didn't get an HPET" and complains about AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext. Google turns up illegal uses of this, so doesn't apply to my use case.
I'm a bit stumped since all was working well until one day it was non-stop curtains of death and can't get them to go away.
A logic board replacement at $1100 is not a feasible option for something that works on linux and windows, but not OS/X, is a bit disappointing and somewhat surprising.
Thanks for your help and advice.
    Regards,
    Marcos

Someone here once thought they knew EFI and Open Firmware a little, and used some commands from OF library that an Intel EFI Apple system didn't like. New logicboard.
Of course to run or boot OS X and see video you need EFI based card. The presence of some PC cards can block OS X from booting.
The fact you get part way through SL DVD, pull all the drives, put in a new drive and format it from SL DVD.
Most of the things you tried are what are more common with PC hardware. Including where people have tried and failed to install OS X on unsupported hardware.
I suppose it is possible something tried and failed to modify the Mac's firmware.
If you have Windows running, and you have WD drives, WD just posted new Lifeguard utility which is what I use to do a good job of stripping a drive down and recertify it for reuse, works wonders. Maybe same for other makes with vendor utility.

My 2006 iMac running Snow Leopard won't boot even after erasing and re-installing Snow Leopard.   I erased and re-installed by putting the iMac in Target Disk mode and usin my MacBookPro as the host.  But after numerous attempts I still can't get it to boot either from the HD or DVD drive. I just get the white screen after the wheel stops spinning.  I can't get it to run Hardware Test - just get the white screen.  If I use Disk Utility via my MBP it says the disk appears OK. All the Snow Leopad files appear to have been installed. What can I do?

Perhaps you installed the wrong version OS X onto the iMac, you can't use the disk from another Mac.
    clean the disk.
If it's not working then use this method to create a bootable 10.6 USB from the iMac machine specific 10.6 disk or the 10.6.3 retail disk on your other Mac, use it to boot the iMac with.

It would "run" (more like Sunday stroll or walk) if you installed Snow Leopard in a VM. Especially if you have 6-core (and would help to have 6 or 8 cores anyway if you were able to and intend to make best use of nMP for video editing).
If you "classic" Mac Pro was 2009 or later, adding two AMD graphic cards, upgrading the processor to 8-core 3.xGHz would have gotten you a FCP-X capable machine and still dual boot and use Snow Leopard as needed.
Any Mac Pro can now use 1000MB/sec SSD PCIe blade to boot from and/or for scratch and editing to help improve work flow.

Step one, boot the new MBA into recovery mode (CMD+R on startup), launch Disk Utility, wipe the HD, and restore the OS. On reboot, use the Setup Assistant to do the migration. Details in Pondini's Setup New Mac guide.

  • The mac pro run very slow

    Mac pro run very slow

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Otherwise, take the steps below when you notice the slowdown.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
    Step 2
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • HT1338 Can I upgrade my Intel Xeon MAC PRO running OS X 10.4.11 to 10.5.8?

Can I upgrade my Intel Xeon MAC PRO running OS X 10.4.11 to 10.5.8?

Yes. You can actually upgrade it all the way to Lion should you so wish, although you would need to first purchase and install Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
I would skip Leopard as it's more expensive and obsolete. You can purchase a Snow Leopard DVD at any Apple retailer - $29.00. You can update it by downloading Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1. The use the App Store to purchase and download Lion should you choose to do so - $30.00.
I would consider expanding your RAM to at least 4 GBs or more especially if you decide to upgrade to Lion. Before upgrading see the following:
How to Install OS X Updates Successfully
    A. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions:
Boot from your current OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    B. Make a Bootable Backup Using Restore Option of Disk Utility:
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
    C. Important: Please read before installing:
If you have a FireWire hard drive connected, disconnect it before installing the update unless you will boot from this drive and install the update on it. Reconnect it and turn it back on after installation is complete and you've restarted.
You may experience unexpected results if you have installed third-party system software modifications, or if you have modified the operating system through other means. (This does not apply to normal application software installation.)
The installation process should not be interrupted. If a power outage or other interruption occurs during installation, use the standalone installer (see below) from Apple Downloads to update.  While the installation is in progress do not use the computer.
    D. To upgrade:
Purchase the Snow Leopard Retail DVD.
Boot From The OS X Installer Disc:
Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
    Restart the computer.
Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
Wait for installer to finish loading.
    E. If updating:
    Download and install update(s)
    Use Software Update, or
    Download standalone updater(s).

  • I have a Mac Pro Running OSX Leopard that the OS has gotten corrupted.

I have a Mac Pro Running OSX Leopard that the OS has gotten corrupted. Can I boot and install OSX Snow Leopard instead of reinstalling OSX Leopard?

    Buy a new drive.
Leave your corrupt Leo system as is.
Maybe you own Disk Warrior? maybe not.
If you don't own Carbon Copy Cloner, invest in it. It can verify and do checksum on all files. So too can Lloyd's File Integrity app.
But you are overdue probably for a new system drive. My vote today is pick up a 120GB Samsung 840 SSD for $90 is fine, will feel like a new computer and is room enough for system and apps. All your data needs to go to drive #2.
With a clone you should never have to reinstall. But you would have bootable backups from points in time, like right after installing, right before making changes.
If you are running Leo then it has to be Early 2008 or before, a 3,1 or maybe 1,1 or 2,1 model.
Leo is not receiving security updates. Snow is, but Lion is even more secure and runs on all Mac Pro models. It does drop support for all the older PowerPC programs and drivers.
You should insure that you are prepared for any updates needed even for 10.6.8.

  • What is the best product for keeping a mac pro running fast?

What is the best product for keeping my mac pro running at optimal speed?

Enough RAM. More than just so there are no pageouts.
A fast small SSD for boot system drive that is only OS and apps and 50% free
Backup clones of your system and data plus TimeMachine
Avoid security suites from 3rd parties and other would be helpers (unless instructed to for a specific need and purpose).
Replace and update older components. could be graphic card, no longer suffices wtih Lion, or causes heat and dust. And make sure that the fans cool the system properly. May need to boost the low default fan speed profile and that is one utility that can be a must. Also monitor system temp readings.
Don't jusst idly restart after a crash or freeze, use Lion Recovery Mode and Safe Boot instead.
Make backup clone before making updates and changes to your system.

  • Mac Pro & Drobo don't like to boot together

I have a mid-2010 Mac Pro (hexacore) and a gen 2 Drobo connected by Firewire 800 to the rear FW800 port (tried all four on the mac).I have had a months-long issue with a Drobo and just spent an hour on the phone with Data Robotics TS and I have the guy stumped—he feels it's not his product and that I should call AppleCare. Perhaps somebody knows something about how drives behave during boot.
What happens is this sequence of events:
    1. Drobo is in Standby mode. I turn on the Mac.
    2. During the Mac's grey boot screen (Apple logo, spinning wheel) The Drobo starts to boot itself up.
    3. Before the Mac leaves the grey screen for the familiar blue screen before the Finder is loaded, the Drobo will complete its boot-up and then go into standby mode again. (I think it's timing out when it shouldn't. TS guy didn't cop to that)
    4. The Mac eventually goes to the blue screen and stays there inexorably and I have to shut the mac off, reboot with the Drobo disconnected.
I have tried 7 different cables in 4 ports and, in fact, this is the second Mac I have experienced this problem on. My previous machine was a Jan 2008 Mac Pro (running 10.5.8) and when I replaced it last summer, on a fresh system (no copies of any software from the previous mac to the new one) the problem started presenting itself within 24 hours.
I have a handful of login items that I need for my work and I suppose I could try turning them off for a couple days, but I'm not sure if they affect boot-up vis-à-vis connected drives or not:
    GrowlHelper
    teleportd
    Drobo Dashboard
    LaunchBar
    iTunesHelper
    TrackballWorksHelper (this is essential)
    EvernoteHelper
    MouseLocatorAgent
    Dropbox
I have connected the Drobo via USB to test it and, although it has booted successfully twice, the second time it hung just like with FW800.
Is there anything I can tweak about the way the Mac boots up? The TS guy at DR was obviously more Windows savvy than Mac and was implicating the boot sequence, as though the Mac was trying to boot off the Drobo, but I assured him of the 4 internal SATAs and the Drobo, on the first SATA has any sort of OS installed. He also wanted to Finder to shut of showing icon previews, which I changed. Still, could there be anything I could do to somehow change the order of events?
Or should I just demand they send me another one to test?

A reasonable way to proceed in debugging a problem like this is to remove not only all the login items you are using but also the kernel extensions that are not absolutely essential to System operation. To do this, boot with the Shift key held down. This also does a fsck check on the boot drive, so it takes a few minutes longer than a regular boot. It will bring up a screen with "Safe Boot" in Red and you can log in. Disk Utility should be used to Repair or Verify all your drives again, and Repair Permissions on your Boot Drive. You can use a mouse for this part, it will not kill you not to have TrackBall Helper installed.
If your Drobo works in Safe Mode, you can try it without ANY Startup Items next. Then add only the drobo Startup Item back in, then add in one at a time, restarting after each addition and see if it stops working.

My brand new Mac Pro running Mountain Lion crashes and re-boots when installing updates or new software. I can only perform these operations while in the safe boot mode.  I have reloaded OSX twice. Does not solve the problem.  The machine is brand new. It replaced a previous MacPro that would not support the new Mountain Lion.  When my new machine came in.  I swaped the dirve out of my old unit into the new and ran the new Lion update.  The machine has had this aforementioned problem since that time.  Also, I had the Legacy version of File Vault running on the old machine/drive, which I also turned off(thinking that was the problem)  but that did not fix the problem either.

  • I have a 2007 Mac Pro running 10.7.5 and I want to replace a drive and install Lion

I have a 2007 Mac Pro running 10.7.5 with dual core intel 2.66 with 13 GB ram. I want to replace my startup disk 250GB (which has all my apps) but has been lagging ( I thinks it's an original drive) with the new HD in bay 2 (4 T drive) which I installed this week. I tried to install lion onto it and it said I needed a newer version 10.7.3-I have time machine as my backup on an external. All the bays are full and I'd like to trade them out sooner or later to get more room for movies, etc. The last OSX disk I have is Snow Leopard and that was rejected as not new enough. Can someone help me with info on installing Lion on the new drive. I know how to make it the startup disk after, but I can't seem to load 10.6, 10.7 or 10.8 (not supported on my older mac pro.) Thanks,
    ANNE Z

Firstly, time to get rid of the 2 x 512MB FBDIMMs in there, they add more heat and use more watts then they add to the system. If you need more, and 4 or 8 DIMMs is ideal, Amazon has 2x2GB sets $22 - about 1/50th what I paid for 1GB new.
    Buy a 250GB Samsung EVO SSD $129
Pick up Carbon Copy Cloner http://www.bombich.com to clone the system to the SSD
A sled adapter for the SSD from Icy Dock $14 Amazon.com
7-8 years overdue for new system drive! amazed it lasted this long. An SSD plus some WD Black 2TB drives or larger should do the trick.
you can also put the SSD in the lower optical drive bay and use one of the two ODD "spare" SATA ports for the SSD - an SSD is the best way to improve the performance of our old Mac Pro 2006-7 models.
When you downloaded the Lion installer that was when to create a flash type installer with Lion DiskMaker.
If you have put in a new-ish graphic card then OS X 10.6.0 may not support it.
