Mac Pro running slow

I just recently added 2 GB of Crucial compatible RAM to my computer (actually I think it was New Year's Day). I noticed a sizable difference in how much better my programs were running. Now within the last few days, I'm noticing a slight delay in everything I do. Its kind of annoying. Any suggestions on what I might look for and where? I ran disk utilities lately and there were no permissions that needed repaired. I'm kind of at a loss as to what to look for or what to try next. I'm disappointed this happened after it had been running so well with the memory upgrade. Thanks in advance for any help!

How much free space on the startup disk?
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure you always have a minimum of 15% free disk space.
Not enough free space can slow the drive down.

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Otherwise, take the steps below when you notice the slowdown.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
    Step 2
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • Mac Pro runs slow after upgrading to mavericks?

    I can't figure it out..
Been a mac user sinc Macintosh then mac plus.
First time i have no explanation.
I upgraded my 2010 Dual Quad Mac Pro 96gb ram, ran so very very fast with Sonnet 4 port eSATA and MOTU PCIE 424 card.
Ever since i upgraded it is so SLLLLOOOWWW!!. I have tired re-installing, contacted all the hardware vendors and software vendors, got all the updates.
I cant figure out why it is running like a 20 year old computer?. I get the wheel, Finder hangs allot, will not relaunch. I take out ALL THE THIRD PARTY CARDS, and boot, still runs like a turtle. Adobe creative suite slow, Aperature takes hrs to update library. Tried creating a new library. Still slow. Avid Media composer, Final Cut Pro X is so slow at rendering i can drive to Santa Cruz from Santa Barbara to MAvericks surf spot go surfing and come home to find out it is 95% done. Also copying large 20 gig folders from one internal to another takes hrs. used to take minuts.
I need help! It is so unpleasent using my mac pro now, , miserable user experience. I dread booting as it takes 5 min to go. I have dual monitors. Apple NVIDA card. could it be CUDA?  no updates availble. I removed all the third party cards, and nothing happens. Removed all usb, FW, etc pluged in usb mouse from Apple Factory.
What ever happend there must be a patch or fix? all of my friends with Macs all having same slow issue. Please offer some fixes.
    1. Is there a way to __Un-install Mavericks? and return my computer back to previous OS? without ruining or formating HD?
It seems like the only solution. I would Purchase a new MAc Pro, but none of my studio takes thunderbolt, and it is so exspensive i am cornerd. I would be so happy if i could just remove Mavericks, instead of taping aspirine all over my Macs. Please Apple send an update that fixes this. Just google it 100,00's of users? we all love Apple, we need you to help us help you! anyone? please help.
    Please help!!
    Kiind Regards

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to gather information about the state of your computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it on this page. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them.
Here's a summary of what you need to do: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait for the script to run. It usually takes a couple of minutes. Then paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking  anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in your browser, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign ($) or a percent sign (%). If you get the percent sign, enter
    exec sh
in the window and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know your password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that takes administrator privileges.
The test may take up to a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line "[Process completed]" to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report your results. No harm will be done.
    8. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If it happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

  • Premiere Pro on Mac Pro Running Slow

I just purchased a new 6 Core Mac Pro with 32GB RAM, Dual AMD FirePro D500s, 512GB Solid State Internal Drive and have it connected to a G-RAID 6TB Thunderbolt Drive and Premiere Pro is running pretty darn slow.  There are certainly some things that are much quicker than my 2008 Core Duo 2.8 GHZ iMac (such as render times and export times) but if I past a simple effect like "Transform" on a 1920x1080 AVCHD clip on either my iMac or my Mac Pro I will get a red line above it and if I try to play it back it stutters quite a bit.  I essentially have to do what I've been doing with my iMac which is either playing my footage at 1/2 or 1/4 resolution after effects are applied or just waiting until I'm completely done with my edit before applying effects (of course there's the option to render everything but this still takes a very long time on the Mac Pro and for a simple effect like Transform I'm very surprised that I would need to render just to play the clip back).
Is there anything that can be done as far as settings (or anything else) to enable to me to get my money's worth out of my new Mac Pro?  At this point I really just want to be able to put maybe two effects on a clip without having to render or playback at 1/4 resolution.
BTW I'm running 10.9.3 and have all the most current updates.
    Thanks,
    Mike S

Thanks, Jason, that's what I was wondering about.  Generally, people post to forums when they have problems.
Yep.  That's usually what happens.  My review will be centered around my usual "benchmark" of editing 2 AVCHD inputs, one PiP'd into the other, synced with an external audio source, and then exported to an h.264 MP4.  CC on my current Mac Pro (modified dual 3.46Ghz Xeon, 48G, nVidia GTX570) takes that task about 1/2t, if t = length of video.  Which is pretty damned good.  I'm hoping the dual GPUs will help scale that export task down a bit more.  I don't expect it to hit 1/4t, but.. hey, maybe I'll be surprised?
I make about 60% of my living from Pr, and the rest from Ae and other apps (mostly Adobe).
Given the lack of CUDA, at the moment, I don't expect the new Mac Pro to be a stellar performer with Ae specifically.  I assume that Adobe is working on OpenCL'ing Ae as much as they possibly can.  But from what I understand, it ain't there yet.
(I'd need a TB monitor and PCI extender, too).
I can understand the need for the PCI extender, but why the TB monitor?  I'd in no way even remotely consider one of those, just given how ridiculously priced they are.  There's no need for one.  Does your display have a DP input?  You're all set.  No?  It has HDMI instead?  Still all set.  It's dual-linked DVI that becomes problematic.

  • Mac pro running slow, rainbow all the time, can't repair disk

So about a week ago my mac pro was running fine as i worked for a few hrs. then all the sudden i was clicking through firefox and i got a rainbow, it lasted ten minutes and i couldn't close the program, when i tried to click anything else it froze as well. I restarted, it went to grey screen froze, restarted itself, the booted as normal and ran fine. Then all the sudden it did again later the next night while working in photoshop. I went through my programs, deleted firefox and msn msgr as culprits, worked ok, then did it again while in safari. I closed everything rebooted, ran ONLY safari and it got the rainbow again. I went and verified my permissions, had some issues repaired them. Same rainbows. I went and tried to verify disk and i got issues with incorrect block count. "volume bit map needs minor repair" "volume header needs minor repair" I rebooted in target disk mode, used my macbook pro to run disk utility and try to repair. Got the same "error: filesystem verify or repair failed." i'm really out of ideas at this point asides reformatting and hoping for the best. Anyone have another solution?

Jonny, Balto's response wasn't particularly helpful. Yes, we know the SBBOD means the processor is busy.
My MBP is doing some of the same things as yours. And unfortunately, the problem seems to be getting worse. I've noticed that when TM starts its backup it just locks up everything. Disk Utility and Disk Warrior are no help.
I'm onto wiping the HD and doing a clean install and see if that fixes things. Best of luck to you and hope someone gets back to you on a possible solution.

  • Mac Pro running slow with FCP...

Hi, I have a Mac Pro OS 10.5.8
    FCP version 6.0.1
I've had the computer about 8 months and edited roughly 45 hours of footage on it so far. I use an external hard drive as my scratch disk capacity 931 GB (359 GB available).
About a month ago I started working on audio editing with Soundtrack pro and the computer started doing a lot of thinking and subsequent crashing. Now it seems I can't upload clips any longer than 4 or 5 minutes without FCP crashing and loosing the clip I was trying to upload.
I tried calling Applecare and did an archive and install. I did the software updates. What are the next avenues I should try in order to get my computer up to speed.
I paid a decent amount for the computer, I would expect it be able to handle this type of workload. Any suggestions? Thanks so much!

Have you tried trashing prefs and repairing permissions? It could help.

Please describe the problem in as much relevant detail as possible. The "etrecheck" fad hasn't made that step any less necessary. The usual results of posting etrecheck output on this site without a full description of the problem are very poor.
The many "failed" warnings that etrecheck sometimes spews mean nothing. Those warnings are not a reason to reinstall the OS, or to do anything else at all. They should be ignored.
The better your description of the problem, the better the chance of a solution.
For example, if the computer is slow, which specific actions are slow? Is it slow all the time, or only sometimes? What changes did you make, if any, just before it became slow? Have you seen any alerts or error messages? Have you done anything to try to fix it? Most importantly, do you have a current backup of all data? If the answer to the last question is "no," back up now. Ask if you need guidance. Do nothing else until you have a backup.

  • The mac pro run very slow

    Mac pro run very slow

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.

  • Mac book pro running slow and getting pop ups

mac book pro running slow and getting pop ups

There is no need to download anything to solve this problem.
You may have installed one or more of the common types of ad-injection malware. Follow the instructions on this Apple Support page to remove it. It's been reported that some variants of the "VSearch" malware block access to the page. If that happens, start in safe mode by holding down the shift key at the startup chime, then try again.
Back up all data before making any changes.
One of the steps in the article is to remove malicious Safari extensions. Do the equivalent in the Chrome and Firefox browsers, if you use either of those. If Safari crashes on launch, skip that step and come back to it after you've done everything else.
If you don't find any of the files or extensions listed, or if removing them doesn't stop the ad injection, ask for further instructions.
Make sure you don't repeat the mistake that led you to install the malware. It may have come from an Internet cesspit such as "Softonic" or "CNET Download." Never visit either of those sites again. You might also have downloaded it from an ad in a page on some other site. The ad would probably have included a large green button labeled "Download" or "Download Now" in white letters. The button is designed to confuse people who intend to download something else on the same page. If you ever download a file that isn't obviously what you expected, delete it immediately.
Malware is also found on websites that traffic in pirated content such as video. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow. Never install any software that you downloaded from a bittorrent, or that was downloaded by someone else from an unknown source.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere  should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates (OS X 10.10 or later)
    or
Download updates automatically (OS X 10.9 or earlier)
    if it's not already checked.

  • Mac book pro running slow and word and excel from Mac not opening

Mac book pro running slow and word and excel from Mac not opening

Call it Monday morning humor.... ALL the MacBook Pro owners we see asking the same thing (more than once a day, too) are slower since 10.10.x so we can assume something. Heard the very same story with every new OS in the past decade from laptop owners, heard a lot especially with Snow Leopard back in Aug-Sept 2009.
A new OS goes better if you do a clean install / checked Roaringapps.com for compatibility / wait for vendors to have updates
About the only things that can be done in addition - if you have like many posting those symptoms have minimal 4GB RAM is to upgrade to 8GB+ and throw in a new 250GB+ SSD (the most recent MBP have to be bought with and cannot add RAM later).
Even the MacBook Air 2014 though with 4GB RAM have PCIe-SSDs that helps, plus 4th gen Intel i5's and an IG of 5000 or later all help.
Try including more details. Model year and configuration at least.

  • Mac Book Pro runs slow after Lion 7.2 upgrade

Ever since I downloaded the Lion 10.7.2 my MBook Pro runs SLOW! Any thoughts or suggestions?

    Reinstall preferably from scratch:
Install or Reinstall Lion from Scratch
If possible backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

  • Mac Pro runs very slow, any apps, accessing finder spinning ball

For the past 3-4 months my Mac Pro is slowing down to about 2 to 3 times slower
This is across the board no mater if it is an application or opening a finder window
I made a new volume and a new install , no 3rd party apps just what was on the disk
    and updated to 10.5.8
Same thing so i don't think it is software related
I have noticed that my cpu memory maxis out very quickly im not using more than 1 or 2 apps and page outs are 2 to 3 times the page ins,
last night i can't use the mouse like i used to i have to almost hit the buttons
to do anything, it's as if is pressure sensitive
If you like i can send you jpgs of the activity Monitor but i don't know what you want from the Activity Monitor
I'm worried that it night be a memory problem i have run almost all diagnostic programs all report no problems
    I have a Mac Pro 2.66 dual-core
    with 2 GB memory
    running 10.5.8
I know that you might ask for more specific info, just tell me what to do
I need to find out what's going on before something with the hardware causes expensive repair and data loss
    Please i need help
    Thank anybody
    Steve knox

    Hi Steve,
My first suggestion is to run the Apple Hardware Test DVD, My next would be to download TechTool Deluxe and see what it says.
The AHT DVD is run the same way as the System Install DVD, just restart holding the C-key with the AHT DVD inserted.
And here is a link to TechTool Deluxe:
    https://support.apple.com/techtooldeluxe/main?id=dl
    Hope this helps you out.
    Kind regards,
    Peter

  • Mac Pro has slowed to a crawl - Please Help Me!

    Hello,
For some time now my Wireless or Wired Internet connection using my Mac Pro has slowed to almost nothing. For example, This page took 5 mins to load and now Internet use has become unusable.
I feel its my Mac Pro because all other Apple Computer run very fast wirelessly. I have (2) New iMac's (1) Apple TV and (1) Apple iPhone. All stream and surf the Internet blazingly fast.
My Mac Pro is constantly being redirected to other sites (mostly **** related) and a huge amount of Pop ups (even though pop ads are disabled in Safari). All Internet browsers perform the same on my Mac Pro or ANYTHING Internet related including WoW, Software updates or even iTunes Music Down loads.
I really feel that in some way (which is shocking) I am infected with "something" that is making my computer crawl on the Internet. Redirection of websites is just now very aggravating.
I am looking at the (2) Original Disks that came inside the Mac Pro Box. I'm seriously considering wiping my system clean and starting from scratch.
I currently hold NOTHING on my Factory 320GB HD other than programs.
I have installed (2) 1TB drives and created a RAID slice thus creating a single HD icon on my desktop that reads 1.8TB. Thats is where all my Music, Photos, and Movies reside.
    My question is....
When I wipe my system will that RAID be broken? Will I lose everything on those 2 drives or will using the restore CD's leave all that information in tact?
Please let me know before I proceed.
    Thank you for your time.
    John

Your RAID won't be touched. But back it up today if you haven't yet!
I use Firefox for security with noscript and some other filters, but I also hardened the router firewall to manually block services, ports and add rules - both incoming and outgoing.
You might want to look at LittleSnitch or NetBarrier and do some logging.
I've seen/heard where older routers and modems were fine, but not with Mac Pro or with Intel Macs in general and needed to be replaced or firmware updated. Problems with the latest updates for Airport have been seen by some, and worth checking into - on forums, news sites or hit google.
And of course check what processes are getting loaded and run; manually delete caches, history, metadata, even the bookmarks cache.
    ~/Library/Caches/Metadata
There are issues with fake Flash updates; normal sites (like CNN) suffering from SQL-injection. Best to run with javascript off for now.
Might want to look into ClamXav and other malware protection. But I would switch and see how Firefox and Opera behave. And turn off java, script, and plug-ins while you consider your options and try to find out why.

You have at least 4 different mobile phone software installed.  Rid the MBP of the ones you do not hjave anymore, especially the Blackberry (assuming you no longer have one).  Also rid the MBP of Mackeeper, you do not need it and it is notorious for slowing down a Mac.
    Ciao.
