Mac Pro screen displays "No bootable device - insert boot disk"

I was trying to install Windows 7 using boot camp and received the message that my hard disk drive had the wrong format.  I was able to eject the windows install disk, but now the only message I get is No bootable device - insert boot disk on a black screen display.

Nah. BCA set the DVD to boot from.
You cannot have any other disk drive with GPT, so pull those.
you have to change BOOTCAMP from FAT to NTFS during install but then it sees other drives and stops you there
zap the pram.

  • Had diagnostics check done at Apple Store. Passed Got home, pushed power button, and screen says No bootable device-- insert boot disk and press any key?

What happened at the Apple store that caused my computer to do this.
It passed the diagnostic check with flying colors. So I got the green light from the Genius to purchase the MacBook Pro.
    Got home.
    Pushed power.
    Screen says:
No bootable device-- insert boot disk and press any key...
What happened? He said it would be like a new MacBook Pro when I got home and turned it on. This isnt like that at all.
Someone please advise me what to do? The Apple store is closed now.   :-(

It's trying to boot from a Boot Camp volume that doesn't have a working installation of Windows. Restart and hold down the option key until you see one or more disk icons. Select the one representing your Mac OS boot volume and press return. When the boot is complete, open System Preferences > Startup Disk and set the Mac OS volume as the default boot device.

  • Imac displays a black screen stating "No bootable device --insert boot disk and press any key", imac displays a black screen stating "No bootable device --insert boot disk and press any key"

I've had boot camp run a setup on my macbook pro, I have a disk from Dell that states "for reinstalling Dell Inspiron and XPS system software". I would not read the disk as I am still looking at the black screen that portrays the Above statement of "No bootable device --insert boot disk and press any key"
my keyboard is inoperable at this point until I could do anything further with the above directions. This was my first time using a Mac and Boot Camp was a setup that I thought would help me become more well aquainted due to my history with windows. Could anyone be of assistance w/ my situation?

... I have a disk from Dell that states "for reinstalling Dell Inspiron and XPS system software".
It sounds as if that disk is specifically meant to install the Dell's operating system for that specific computer. It is not a generic Windows installation disk. Microsoft has strict licensing requirements for Windows and I would be surprised if the Dell disk would be useful for anything other than the computer with which it was included.
You need to buy a copy of Windows that is not machine-specific.
I recommend you forget Windows unless you have a pressing need to use it. I can't think of any.

  • My monitor displays 'no bootable device -- insert boot disk an press any key'

I recently tried to install Winows xp on my imac through bootcamp assistant but i didn't follow through with it. I exited off bootcamp assistant but now everytime i turn on my imac the monitor displays 'No bootable device -- insert bootdisk and press any key'. Is there a way to fix this? Advice for this will be much appreciated, Thanks.

If you have BootCamp available, then your iMac is much newer than those this forum covers. I suggest reporting in the forum for Intel iMacs here:

or in the BootCamp forums here:

  • Error message on screen: No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key comes on

Error message comes on screen: No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key.  What do I do?

Install or Reinstall Mavericks or Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
OS X Mavericks- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Erase and reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
If the above is not possible or failes, then replace your hard drive.

Turn off your Mac by holding down the Power button. Then, turn it on and hold the Option (Alt) key until you see all bootable devices in the screen, so choose your Windows 8 disc and follow the steps to install Windows 8.1 > http://manuals.info.apple.com/MANUALS/1000/MA1636/en_US/boot_camp_install-setup_ 10.8.pdf

  • TA21888 No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key how can i fix this problem to may desktop mac?

No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key......thats the words always show every time i start may desktop mac

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Try starting your Mac holding the Option (Alt) key, so you should see all bootable devices on the screen. If you see the OS X volume, select it. After starting, open System Preferences > Startup Disk, and choose the OS X volume.
If you don't see anything, try holding the key after hearing the startup chime. If you still don't see anything, your hard disk could be damaged

  • Boot camp: No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key screen

    Hello there!
I recently upgraded my imac mid 2010 system with a SSD hard-drive. The old "main" drive went to the place of super-drive and after reinstalling OS X into the new drive and wiping the old drive a very interesting problem happened. I started trying to install windows 7 via bootcamp. I did everything what the bootcamp assistant says and after the imac restarts itself it just says No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key. Firstly I thought that maybe something is wrong with the installation disk (i have an external super-drive connected to the imac). After restarting the imac once again i held down the option button and arrived to the screen, where it shows the avlaible boot options (different disks). Now, what I saw, was funny. The bootcamp assistant had'nt created the bootcamp drive at all. Atleast it did not show it. After doing this two-three times the result was the same. My next idea was that maybe, there is an issue with the concrete SSD model I am using. So I went back to OS X and opened the bootcamp assistant and restored the state of the OS X SSD drive. Next I did an bootcamp partition onto the old drive I have installed. But the result is still the same. Now my head is empty of ideas.
Has anybody had a similar problem and can you please give me tutorial what I did wrong or what to try next?
    Thanks.
    Indrek.

    Indrek,
There is a Boot Camp forum, I'd suggest posting there because most of the Boot Camp and Windows gurus are there.
    Good luck.

  • HT1199 After trying to install window 7 my new iMac will not reboot back to apple. Black screen "No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key". How do I get out of this?

After trying to install Windows 7 in my new iMac It will not boot up back to Apple. I have a black screen with the following "No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key". My iMac did not come with a boot disk. What can I do?

Try holding down the option/alt key during a restart and see if you can see/select your boot drive there.

  • White screen and message reading "No bootable device--insert boot disk and press any key"

My iMac was recently upgraded to the new Lion software. I dont know if that has anything to do with it but, the computer was working fine. I was working in iMovie, had Safari open. My cousins and I opened Photo Booth and started taking pictures. When we clicked on effects and selected an effect everything froze. I turned off the computer and when it started up, the screen was white. I unpluged it and restarted it, same thing. I unplugged it and around 3 hours later I turned it back on...same thing! Well this time after the white screen appears for I dont know...10 15 seconds..it goes black and a message saying "No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key" appears. I have no idea what to do. I have stuff that needs to get done that is saved on this computer. PLEEAASSEE HEELLPP!!!!

Start up you computer holding down the option and select Macintosh HD (or whatever name you gave your OS drive). If successful, take a trip to System Preferences->Startup Disk and make sure the proper HD is selected. Hope this helps.

  • Hallo, ich wollte auf eine eigene Partition von meinem mac noch windows installieren, doch jetzt komt beim starten immer nur: no bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key. Was soll ich tun??? Oder woher bekomme ich so eine Boot disk?

    Hi,
ich wollte auf meinen Imac noch zusätzlich Windows 7 installieren.
jetzt kommt aber wenn ich starte nur noch: No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key.
    was soll ich jetzt tun?

  • No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any disk

Pleeeeessssssseeeeeee help. I was trying to setup bootcamp but when it came to instaling windows it came up with a black screen and then after 5 or so minutes it powered down. Then when I turned it on from the power button at the back of imac 21.5 inch it took longer than usaul on the white startup screen displaying no apple symbol. Then the screen went black and displayed the words "No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key"  I have a wireless key board and doesn't conect to the mac until after startup so I cannot hold down the option key (ALT). I have ordered a wired keyboard but will take quite long to get here. Is there a way to fix it without a keyboard or mouse bearing inmind it is an all in one.
    Thanks
