Mac Pro + Shake problems

Just set up a bunch of Mac Pro Intel workstations to replace our dual and quad G5s. All clients are direct attached to fiber. All stations running 10.4.9 and Xsan 1.4.1.
New issues we're seeing are Shake cannot consistently render onto the Xsan volume (when it could perfectly with the G5s!). Sometimes the rendered QuickTime are 32k files. Not at all what we want.
Also the Finder has many display issues. Logging out or restarting helps to clear that up. But this is really bad. Terminal shows all files fine, but the Finder is corrupt.
Anyone else seeing these issues, or have solutions? Or is this just plain Intel Mac Pro + Xsan + Shake bug?

Strange news!
Niklas Algren on the Shake listserv discovered something about the issue of Shake (on Intel Mac Pros) rendering 32k QuickTimes on Xsan volumes:
(Thanks to Chris Noellert on the Xsan list for sharing this workaround, which I have tested and verified).
Basically, Shake on Intel-based macs will randomly fail to render Quicktime fileouts with non-local destinations (nfs/smb/xsan). The console will echo error 43.
Now, for the fun part; it will only fail if the length of the complete output path is an odd number Smile
I.e. /Volumes/temp/abcd.mov will render fine, /Volumes/temp/abc.mov will fail.

Lacie Speakers and Mac Pro Firewire problem waking from sleep and loud feedback. I had a powermac before this with the speakers and it worked fine. But the mac pro is having these issues. Is it the firewire port or the speakers or (and most likely) just a firmware glitch with mac pro? Anyone else see these issues?

Here is my audio settings. For some reason I wish I could remember what I did. It was actually the Apple Store tech in the Unversity Village in Seattle that gave me the idea and I swear I had to change the settings in MIDI setup. Now that Leopard is out it seems the MIDI stuff has been redone. I included screenshots of my MIDI setup as it is currently to see if you see something different on your computers. Let me know!

  • Mac Pro Fan Problem

Hi, I have been having some problems with a Mac Pro I have been working with. At the Start-up the Fan goes to top speed and once it logs-in the fan is still pretty loud. I've checking the Temperature of all the computer parts via a Temperature Diode, and its normal and not high. After searching the internet for hours looking for posts that were for the Mac Pro and not for the MacBook Pro (which comes up in about all the searches using the words Mac Pro Fan Problem) and I found some software all of which is not for Mac Pro's. Is there any application I can run do reduce the RPM of the Fans, Reset the Fan Speeds to only turn on when it get hot, or something along those lines.

Thats odd, seeing as Apple have it listed in the Support article:
To reset the SMC on a Mac Pro:
    1) From the Apple menu, choose Shut Down (or if the computer is not responding, hold the power button until it turns off).
    2) Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord and any display cables.
    3) Wait at least fifteen seconds.
    4) Plug the power cord back in, making sure the power button is not being pressed at the time. Then reconnect your keyboard and mouse to the computer.
    5) Press the power button to start up your computer.
It does exactly the same thing as the SMC_RST button, simply by removing all power from the system. I would assume the reason for this would be that the SMC settings are stored in RAM, which is erased once the power is removed from the board, hence the minimum 15 secs wait which gives time for the capacitors in the power supply and system to discharge.
So yeah, it does do the trick, or has done for me in the past a few times.

  • Windows 8.1 Pro on Mac pro resolution problem

I have created a partition for windows 8.1 pro on my 13' retina display mac pro via boot camp, everything is fine except the resolution, when i open the browser, i could see pixels, the words aren't very sharp, but this isn't my biggest problem, when i open the Solidworks software i'm working on, the icons are too small, or the texts are too big for their boxes. what is happening here? anyone knows what is all about, or how to fix this? changing the resolution of the display didn't solve the problem.

This is how the words look like in the browser page, you could see pixels. The maximum resolution for this machine is 2560*1600

  • Mac Pro boot problem-Get "I have no name!" error message after possible KP

I think I'm having a kernel panic... and trying to keep from doing so myself
3GHz Mac Pro/4GB RAM, 250GB boot drive and three 400GB drives as a RAID for video captures.
I'm still in the process of getting the machine set up with software.
Demo machine from an Apple Authorized VAR that has been running in his office for several weeks. Had installed Final Cut Studio Monday, allowed Software Update to update the Apple software, including the OS.
Edited quite happily with FCP on a multiclip project... and did other things over the last several days.
Had no problems until a couple of hours ago after adding a number of fonts... which may turn out to be part of the problem... or not.
Rebooted the machine, and after what seemed like a VERRRRRRY long time of gray screen with spinning gear icon, the screen goes black with a cursor in the upper left corner.
    About :30 later, text appears: "3Ghz-MacPro:/ I have no name!#" followed maybe ten seconds later by "SIOCPROTOATTACH_IN6: en0 error17" and "SIOCPROTOATTACH_IN6: en1 error17"
Screen clears back to cursor... then "3Ghz-MacPro:/ I have no name!#" reappears... and eventually the cycle starts again.
I would infer that en0 and en1 are the two ethernet ports.
I've popped the install disc in, booted to it (which took a while to do) and used Disk Utility to verify the disk. No problems found. Repaired it anyway.
Verified permissions, which found a couple of issues in the library with some files not essential to booting. Repaired those. Rebooted.
Same cycle as above with "no name."
Ran Apple Hardware test (the quick one) and it found no hardware problems.
Am waiting to see whether the AppleCare TechTool Deluxe will boot. Spinning gear continues as I write this (7-8 minutes??)... now wondering whether it's 10.4.x for Intel Macs as it spins.
After waiting a while... decided to go back to the install disk and see whether I can install 10.4.7 to a handy FireWire drive and boot from that...
then remove (or turn off with FontBook) all the fonts I just installed and see whether it'll boot from the internal.
More later. Am watching e-mail on another machine so feel free to offer suggestions.
    Thanks
    Ted.
    3GHz Mac Pro-1GHz eMac-G3 400MHz Lombard   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I installed 10.4.7 onto the RAID so I could see whether it would boot OK, and to swap font folders out so that only the OS installed ones (from the RAID install) were present on the boot's original install.
Booted from the RAID just fine... and was able to do the font folder swap in the main font and user font folders.
Trying to then boot from the boot disk didn't make a difference. Same kernel panic with the text as described before.
Did an "archive and install" onto the boot disk and it came up fine on the fresh OS.
Updated QT and then the OS to 10.4.8 using Software Update (which I understand from the Apple info site is the "delta" version. Combo is also available, and it updates any 10.4.x version to 10.4.8)
Moved over some items in various library folders from the previous system to make the ProApps happy (only Motion's not working) and will get a project out the door today.
Will ultimately wipe the drive and go from scratch on the OS and Apps again.
Looking forward to half a day of intimacy with my Mac Pro and software disks this weekend.
    Thanks.
Would still like to know what happened under the hood to cause the problem in the first place... so I can avoid doing anything I might have done to cause the problem... or to avoid other snafus.

  • Mac Pro Boot Problems. Kona 3?

I'm having booting problems with a Mac Pro. It's got a kona 3 card in one of the PCI slots, and we've been tinkering with it to try to get the audio to work right. However, I've been having huge problems whenever I try to restart the computer. After hitting the power button, or telling it to restart the screen goes to black and sometimes I hear a chime. However, the computer does not boot any further. Then, after holding the power button down and restarting the computer, I can sometimes get the computer to boot normally.
I suspect the Kona card is causing some of the problems. I have multiple hard drives on the system, and I have the ability to boot onto two separate drives in 10.5.8. Both drives are having the same problems.
it's a 2x2.8ghz quad-core Intel Xeon with 10gb of ram. The Kona card is in slot 2. Slot 3 has also been tried, but similar problems remained.

removed kona card. uninstalled aja programs. restart problems still persisting.

  • Mac Pro Boot Problems After 10.6.2 Update

After installing the latest version of snow leopard I am now having boot problems on my mac pro.
    Symptoms;
-Screen resolution is incorrect at apple splash screen.
-Takes a lot longer than usual to boot.
-Once booted the blue tooth magic mouse isn't imediately reckonised, takes a while to find that.
-Once the mouse is finally reckonised it can move around but can't click on anything or bring up the dock. Tried a wired mouse, had the same problem.
-The keyboard is also not appearing to do anything, none of the shortcuts or quick keys work..
Had exactly the same problem after 3 restarts but on the 4th after leaving it for a good 20-30minutes it setled down and everything was working okay. However this is a recurring problem as I had the same thing yesterday...
I have a my 10.5.8 system backed up on an external so I am running from that at the moment. Don't want to go back to snowy til these problems are solved.
Any help will be greatly appreciated!

  • MAC PRO USB Problem - Traced to bad Apple Keyboard Extension Cable

I found a fix to a problem synching to my itunes Library on my early 2008 MAC PRO.   The Apple supplied USB extension cable for the keyboard was defective.
The symptoms were hangs in itunes and finder synching to iPods and transferring data to USB hard drives. The iPods and hard drives never lost power and no errors/log entries were made. The transfers simply stalled and would not continue. itunes and finder would hang until the drive or ipod was removed. These devices were installed directly to USB ports on the MAC PRO. No other USB devices were connected except for the aluminum keyboard and mighty mouse; the mouse was connected to the keyboard. The keyboard was connected using the USB extension cable that shipped with the MAC PRO.
Hardware diagnostics were all clear. The keyboard and mouse never had any connection problems. Only itunes syncs and hard drive copies would fail; these would occur at random times. I had an open ticket with Apple to have the logic board replaced as it was diagnosed to be a hardware/USB problem.
Removal or replacement of the extension cable on the keyboard (which was connected to a different USB port and NOT in the USB chain with the ipod and hard drives) permanently fixed the problem. I cancelled the Apple HW replacement.
I have noted several posts with others having problems with USB ports and devices. I wonder if Apple has an unknown problem with bad keyboard extension cables.

I think you may be onto something there. I'm just a few weeks into my second Mac Pro and again it's having the same USB problems which led Apple to give me a replacement machine previously. I went through several weeks of considerable testing with Apple Engineers prior to that - an Apple Care application to collect data from my machine, Apple Developer USB prober and two clean installs. The latest machine initially showed no sign of the problem then it started again - 2 iPods "can not be read or written to" part way through sync, Aperture quitting importing from USB SD card reader, USB drives dismounting etc. So I pulled out the Aluminium keyboard and, lo and behold, the iPods managed to get all the way through synching without errors. I really like the alu keyboard so it's a huge shame that it might be the cause of all my problems so far - and the Mac Pro is otherwise a beautiful computer.
But is this really a hardware problem of the internal USB cards and power management or supply?

  • Late 2013 Mac Pro graphics problem

I have a late 2013 Mac Pro with dual AMD FirePro D300's. Although this could be coincidence, it appears that after updating to 10.10.2, I find my graphics "freeze" after a random period of time (I updated late last week). I can unfreeze by rebooting, or by unplugging the HDMI cable and plugging it back in again. In the latter case, it takes about 30 seconds for the graphics to re-enable, and they are very sluggish after they do re-enable. I have run the standard Apple diagnostics to no avail. Has anyone else seen anything like this? Any suggestions? Any help would be great! Thank you in advance.

Thanks for this response. With nothing else to go on, I guess I have to assume it is some sort of bug somewhere. In looking at the console log, what I see is causing the display to be slow after I unplug the hdmi cable and plug it back in again is what appear to be UI update disables:
2/4/15 5:33:37.955 PM WindowServer[145]: disable_update_timeout: UI updates were forcibly disabled by application "Google Chrome" for over 1.00 seconds. Server has re-enabled them.
2/4/15 5:33:37.963 PM WindowServer[145]: common_reenable_update: UI updates were finally reenabled by application "Google Chrome" after 1.01 seconds (server forcibly re-enabled them after 1.00 seconds)
This does not happen prior to the GPU crash; which from the console log appears to be what hangs the system in the first place.
Note that it is not just Google Chrome that is doing this, every application I use results in the same message. Forcing the WindowServer to quit doesn't do anything (other than log me out).
I am frustrated by this. Googling these issues shows many many other people have similar problems. Being a long time and loyal Apple customer, I am very disappointed........

  • New Mac Pro USB Problems!

It seems the new Mac Pro cannot recognize certain devices.  Such as my Access Virus Ti synthesizer-  users cannot get the Mac to recognize the USB connection from the Virus.  Please help.  I'm losing my mind after 7 hours trying to figure it out and the only indication is that the USB ports on the new mac are possibly incompatible...  Please tell me I can still use my $3000 instrument with my new $4500 mac pro which i just bought SPECIFICALLY to use with this VIrus Ti synthesizer!
Link to Virus Ti user forums showing other people with the same problemhttp://www.virus.info/forum/index.php/Thread/5522-MacPro-trashcan-and-TI-Anyone- got-it-working/?postID=28004&highlight=trash%2Bcan#post28004

From what you said it appears that the synthesizer is not compatible. That would be a problem for the synthesizer manufacturer to resolve.

  • Radeon X1900 and mac pro graphics problems

    Hi all,
i've a mac pro with two xeon cpu's (2,66GHz) in it. 2GB main memory and a radeon X1900 graphics card. on this mac i use bootcamp beta 1.4, installed the newest driver for this version from the apple support side. also i have updated the graphics FW to the newest version. so all things are on up to date.
my problem is the following: if I play some very graphics intensiv games like STALKER or BIOSHOCK (yes i use my mac for works and sometimes to play), it seems that the graphics card will be to hot. I get a lot of pixel errors. horiz. lines and after a while windows xp is freezeing. so I must reboot the maschine. also VPU recovery comes up.
I've tried several settings (800x600/1024x768/until maximum). 2-3 minutes the game is running well. after that my fans spin up like a plane, get the errors on the pixel side and the game crashes or windows xp is freezing.
i don't know any solution yet. can anyone help me? have some others the same problem?
    many thanks
    Andy

    Hi There,
I was having the exact same problem playing command and conquer 3 in Win XP. I'd play for about 5 minutes or so with the fans spinning at full speed (sounding like the mac was about to 'takeoff'), and then it would just crash.
I followed the advice here, took the graphics card out, clean the dust out and hey presto, the problem was fixed! My MacPro is about 6 months and i was surprised how much dust had got clogged up in there!

  • Mac Pro Mystery Problem!

    Hi there,
I have an issue whereby my Mac Pro will only boot up in safe mode. In normal mode, the graphics are not responding quickly enough to any actions. I.E, dropped pixels, stuck mouse, delayed actions, a total nightmare. have defragged all my drives with Drive Genius, reset PRAM, thrown away preferences and renewed them and still the problem persists. I thought it might be the graphic card but it all works perfectly in safe mode. If anyone has any ideas, I'd be really grateful. Here's my spec:
    Mac Pro
    2 x 2.66 Ghz
    Dual Core Intel Zeon
    2GB Ram
    4 bays:
    1. Tiger system drive
    2. Snow Leopard drive (my main system drive)
    3. Full content
    4. iTunes, Iphoto libraries

You realize you skipped mentioning WHAT graphics card?
X1900? you know those have to be pulled couple times a year to clear the dust from the chamber?
The 7300GT? those are having problems and failing now.
8800GT? not everyone but a lot of people have had trouble - new OS seems like it stresses more.
The fact that you have Tiger tells us this belongs in and is about 1st generation ("Previous") rather than Early 2009 2.66 models.
For me, I do two things: clone system with SuperDuper, and rebuild with Disk Warrior. Sounds to me like an issue for Disk Warrior or heat (and FBDIMMs run hot and can also fail after 4 yrs).
But pull the card, check the power cable and dust, and SmcFanControl 2.2.x can help keep more air circulating and cooling.

  • Mac Pro Video problems...

Recently bought a used Mac Pro 2006 on ebay and I've been using it for a couple days and the display starts going black for a few seconds then coming back on. Also noticing some lines in the screen like video distortion. It occurs in Windows & and Mac OS X Snow Leopard. I think it was doing it in Lion too which I also have installed.  I hope its the stock Nvidia 7300 GT graphics card failing and not the logic board. I'd hate to send it back as i'm sure the shipping will be steep. I borrowed another card to see if that is the problem.  And bought a ATI 5770 as i planned on upgrading anyway.

That sounds like a graphics card probelm. Try installing the Apple 5770 and see if it all goes away. It should.
NB. the 5770 has a six-pin cable that must be connected internally for more power to the card.

  • Mac Pro Sleep Problems

I just purchased a Mac Pro and it will not go to sleep. Either by itself or when I try to put it to sleep. Also, I have 4 firewire drives hooked up to it and they will not go to sleep. They are running constantly and getting very warm to the touch.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

    Here is what I tried:
    1) used the other ethernet outlet, but it did not solve the problem
    2) unplugged my cable modem and airport to let them recycle and start-up again, but it did not solve the problem.
    3) unplugged the ethernet all together, but it did not solve the problem
So, here is what the system log showed when I tried to pu thte computer to sleep, with the ethernet cable unplugged from the computer:

  • Mac Pro Burn Problems

    Hello,
I have the Mac Pro 1.1 Version. This is the second MacPro I have gotten because The ATI Raedon X1900XT Keeps overheating and shutting the computer down at 120C. When I called Apple the "THIRD" time to get a replacement I asked them to send me the Nvidia 8800GT instead because of the problems I have been having. Funny story they sent me three of them instead of one..lol.. I sent those back BTW.
The problem is when I replaced the old card there was an burn image in my metal that replicated the back of the old video card. You can actually see where the processor, resistors, and everything, that burnt into the metal.
I am getting blue tooth installed at the Apple store because when they sent my second system they forgot to install it..lol.. Can you please help me with my options because of this burn issue? I will have them take a look at it, but I am afraid that they will say the computer is fine, and there is nothing we can do.
The problem is I want to sell this one and get the new on coming out, and don't want someone to think there is something I am not telling them, and even if I take screen shots of this to show buyers, it will devalue the final system selling price.
Thanks for your time, and sorry for the long post
    Bobby

okay, all I can give you is my experience (bear in mind that I'm not an expert, nor do I work for Apple in any ways). You can clean the lens by possibly getting a can of compressed air and using that, maybe trying one of those dvd cleaning discs with the brushes on them. You may have to shut down your Mac Pro 5,1 let it cool down a bit, remove the side panel, then take out and disconnect the dvd drive, take it out,  open it up and clean the lens with lens cleaning fluid (for eyeglasses, perhaps-this is just a suggestion, I've done it once and it hasn't done any harm) then put it back together,  put the drive back in the sled, reconnect it, slide the sled back in, put the side panel back and restart your mac pro. if you have an air compressor, maybe compressed air from a tank, with a blowing tool (the one with the button on the top) might work, if you were gentle, I suppose. Hopefully something fixes your problem, daliah, if not maybe try repairing permissions in disk utility, if nothing works, try posting here again, and you're still having problems reading dvd's, could be the media, could be the drive needs replacing (but who knows?)  replacing a dvd drive, should you need to, is very easy.  In a pinch, you can use a dvd drive scavenged from a PC, as long as it is ATAPI/IDE  and as long as it works
    well, good luck to you
