Mac pro shipping delay

I've ordered a hex core 3.33 mac pro with radeon 5870 on October 20th and just got an e-mail saying that my order has been delayed - shipping in 3-5 business days. In worst case scenario (if it doesn't get delayed again) I'll be receiving my mac pro in 21 days since ordering! Has anyone recently ordered a mac pro and experienced such long shipping delays? Looking at the Apple Store and the 5870 status "Leaves Apple: Currently Unavailable" is the video card causing the delays? Or perhaps it's 10.6.5 or iLife 11?
I'm a bit disappointed - wait patiently or call Apple and ask what's going on? Any ideas...
thx,
adrian

This is something to take up with Apple Customer Service.
The ATI 5870 has so far NEVER been available as a separate upgrade option, and now the 5770s are not shipping, so perhaps there is a supply chain availability.

  • Mac pro shipped with OS 10.73 able to run snow leopard

I'm trying to salvage my old power PC applications and am hoping I will be able to run them if I load Snow Leopard.  My mac pro is a 2 x 2.4 GHZ quad core xeon mac with 10.7.3 shipped loaded.  Is there a way to run OSX 10,5.8?.  will booting in 32 bit mode help with the old apps?

How To Run Snow Leopard On A New Mac
This does not apply to new Mac Minis or MacBook Airs. When newer models are introduced that also require Lion for hardware support, the techniques described below will no longer work with the possible exception of using Parallels 7.
    What has to be done:
Create a new partition on the hard drive.
Get a clone of a 10.6.8 Snow Leopard system. Put the cloned Snow Leopard system onto the new partition.
Step One: Create a new partition on the hard drive
To resize the drive and create a new partition do the following:
    1.           Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
After the main menu appears select Disk Utility and click on the Continue button. Select the hard drive's main entry then click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    2.           You should see the graphical sizing window showing the existing partitions. A portion may appear as a blue rectangle representing the used space on a partition.
    3.           In the lower right corner of the sizing rectangle for each partition is a resizing gadget. Select it with the mouse and move the bottom of the rectangle upwards until you have reduced the existing partition enough to create the desired new volume's size. The space below the resized partition will appear gray. Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.  (Note: You can only make a partition smaller in order to create new free space.)
    4.           Click on the [+] button below the sizing window to add a new partition in the gray space you freed up. Give the new volume a name, if you wish, then click on the Apply button. Wait until the process has completed.
You should now have a new volume on the drive.
It would be wise to have a backup of your current system as resizing is not necessarily free of risk for data loss.  Your drive must have sufficient contiguous free space for this process to work.
Step Two: Obtain a clone of a Snow Leopard system:
You will need access to a Mac already running Snow Leopard. You will need a 16 GB USB flash drive or an external hard drive to which you can clone the Snow Leopard system from the Mac that has Snow Leopard installed. Alternatives are:
    Option One:
Install a new Snow Leopard system onto a USB flash drive. Boot the Mac used for installing with the USB flash drive. Update the flash drive system to 10.6.8 using the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard. Verify that you can boot the Mac with the USB flash drive.
Take the USB flash drive to your new Mac and try booting from it. If it works then clone the system from the flash drive to the newly made partition:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the new partition on the internal drive. Source means the USB flash drive.
    Option Two:
If you have a large enough external drive you can erase and use, then it would be easier to just clone the entire Snow Leopard system from the source Mac computer to the external drive.
Destination means the external drive. Source means the Snow Leopard Mac's internal drive.
After cloning verify that it will boot the source Mac. If so then take the external drive to your new Mac boot with it. If all is well then restore the clone to the new partition on your new Mac:
Restore the clone using Disk Utility
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the new partition on the internal drive. Source means the external drive.
If the above seems too daunting then you might consider running Snow Leopard inside an emulator such as Parallels 7. You are permitted to install a single copy of Snow Leopard inside a virtual machine. You will need to first purchase a copy of Parallels 7 and install it on your new Mac. Create a new virtual machine configured for Mac OS X. You may then install Snow Leopard in the virtual machine then download Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 and update to 10.6.8. Be sure to include Rosetta in your initial Snow Leopard installation. Rosetta is not installed by default rather it's an optional install.

  • Mac Pro shipping boxes

An unexpected change of address is going to happen in two months. From Hialeah, Florida I am moving to Madrid Spain. My problem is that I got rid of all my original shipping boxes and now I need them. I know that Apple sends you a box if you need repair of your machines.
    I have 2 Mac Pros, 1 Cinema display 23" and 1 20".
Any help or advise will be realy appreciated.
    Beltran

I too like to use the original shipping materials and do keep them for many items, like my Mac Pro (offering to give you my box isn't really going to help you given it's already in Spain).
Have you contacted some local Apple Stores, resellers and service centres to see if they're able to either help or have any helpful suggestions?
One option you may or may not have considered is to sell your MPs and displays and then buy new ones when you get here. All you'd need to do in that case is to rip out and drives or RAM you want to keep and only pack and take that.

It said 2-3 days last time I checked. Your order status should show you the estimated Ship Date and Delivery Date.
I have used 2-day and overnight shipping from Apple and always got my money's worth. Both my recent Macs were delivered ahead of schedule.

  • Mac Pro Shipping

I have migrated to a new iMac and am selling my Mac Pro. The problem is I no longer have the original shipping box. Does anyone have a recommendation securely shipping the computer? I have the exterior box the iMac was shipped in that I could fill with foam or peanuts or something, but I'm not sure how secure it would be.
Can I somehow get a box from Apple directly?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi there,
a friend just had his PC shipped from Germany to England... it looked like they've been using a catapult to get it over the channel. It was completely totaled (cpu-heatsink ripped off, outer case bended in several directions, hdds ripped out of the bays with broken screws and so on) He had a shipping-insurance with UPS and (who would've thought) they won't pay a penny, also the box looks like it has been thrown for several meters (or feet, sry).. should've seen the look on his face.
If you do it, make sure the guy you sell it to checks the computer on delivery while the UPS or fedEx-guy is still there, if he leaves and you or the buyer file in an insurance request later, they won't accept it. I guess that's why they're always so keen on leaving as fast as they can. You should also give the shipping-company of your choice a call to arrange a safe transport. I've had a pc shipped 2 years ago and it was broken after that, too.
So really don't do it, or only do it if the buyer takes the risk (but tell him it's risky, too)
Maybe ask Apple how they get the stuff from China to the States.. has to get there someway?!
    Best regards,
    Tim

  • Mac pro shipping-eh off??

Ordered one mac pro said to be shipping on the 21st(which is 4 weeks away) of Feb, however if you configure one now, says shipping in 2-3 weeks. (2.8 octo, stock with 8800gt) anyone else have this estimate too? Hope I get mine Early as you can see below I am running a old one.

    Don't be too worried about it;
The ship dates are purely automatic - that is, the ship date will always show the last date of the time frame you were give!
No, if in your case, it was 3-5 weeks, and it now has been changed to 2-3 weeks - but it didn't TAKE 2 weeks to do so, a new order indeed will have a sooner ship date than yours.
However, these numbers are purely guidelines, and there is NO reason to think yours won't ship before one ordered later. In most if not all cases, as the date given is the last of the time-frame given, they should all ship prior to the date given.
    Does that help?

  • Mac Pro shipping is terrible

    I orderd my mac pro with a eta shipping date of 3 -5 days - thus 9/13 - 9/15
this order was flagged as a replacement along with them putting in a allocation request to speed up build - expedited overnight shipping for even sat delivery and here it is 6:30 est and the darn thing is still in california.
their solution to this is to cancel order and go buy in store. FINE but had apple not held up over $4000 in my account i would do just that.
after this i will never order anything else online/over phone from apple - if i cant walk in store and get it / screw it .

  • Boot up Tiger from Lastest Mac Pro shipped from Apple

Ok, I am testing to upgraded our Tiger to leopard for the Marketing department. my problem is, the lastest or current mac pro that from Apple is not booting up from Tiger so I can install it on a 250gig hard drive brand new. I hold down the "C" and nothing comes up to prompt me to install. Mac Pro comes with 6gig and 650gig hard drive leopard, but I need to downgrade the OS to Tiger to test it.
Any suggestion what I did wrong or you can downgrade OS on this new model from Apple?

You can't boot the new mac with Tiger.

  • Where did everyone's new Mac Pro ship from?

Mine shipped from "BLOOMINGTON, CA". And it only took 3 days, with FedEx Ground. Interesting, I thought it's manufactured in China?

I got a shipping notice for mine this evening. Fedex says they picked it up in Fullerton, CA.
My understanding is that Apple routinely does the CTO/BTO final configurations in the USA.

  • Will mac pro and monitors ordered together ship at the same time?

Will Mac Pro and Thunderbolt monitors, if ordered together, ship at the same time? Or will they ship the in-stock monitors now initiating the Applecare start date for the whole order even though the Mac Pro is not expected to ship until sometime in March?

I ordered the new Mac Pro (model 6.1) on December 18, 2013 along with a 27 in. Apple thunderbolt display.  The fully maxxed out new Mac pro shipped on January 8, 2014 and arrived January 13, 2014.  My Thunderbolt display shipped within 1-2 days of placing the order, i.e. the week of December 18th and arrived before Christmas.  A few days after receivng my new Mac Pro, I received the Apple Care paperwork and both the new Mac Pro and the Apple Thunderbolt display were listed with a start date of January 7, 2014, i.e. the day that my new Mac {ro was prepared for shipment -- not the day my thunderbolt display was shipped.

  • Mac Pro for Final Cut Studio -- The Buying Guide

I am starting to think about upgrading my "old" Power Mac G5 Quad system to a Mac Pro system. As you might expect, this raises several issues.
What I do: I edit DV and HDV on FCS2. My specs are below. I am looking for the best speed (especially for rendering), stability and video quality I can afford (between $5,000 and $6,000).
Question 1: Is it true that Snow Leopard and FCP 7 are about a year away? If so, please assume for the following questions that I would be working with the full complement of FCS2 applications on the Leopard OS. (How worth waiting for do you think these are?)
Question 2: Without directing me to the various benchmark and testing sites (which I’ve already looked at), can you suggest the actual performance differences I would see (again, using the whole range of FCS2 apps) in the following:
Two 2.26GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon processors
Two 2.66GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon processors
Question 3: I have heard that (with the exception of Compressor) FCS can only use a maximum of 4GB of RAM, and that the 6GB that the Mac Pro ships with are already more than it can use. Is this true? Is it true that Snow Leopard would allow FCS to make greater use of more RAM? And would this show up in the programs’ performance?
Question 4: To get the best video performance with my various FCS2 applications, is there a significant quality improvement in moving up from the NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512MB to one of the other video cards? How would I notice a difference in the quality?
Question 5: Are there any other purchasing considerations I should think about when configuring a new Mac Pro?
    Thanks a lot.

Well, well, well, you make me think more about my last upgrade of an ATI Radeon 2600 to the latest ATI Radeon HD 4870!
I was looking on the Final Cut Pro thread to find one answer and look what I found, your questions!
Since yesterday night I was seeking the Apple Support threads just for fun and I now have doubts.
I am a Mac Pro (earlier 2008) owner. I upgraded it to 4 x 1.5 Tb Seagate hard drives and 10G of RAM from OWC (Other Word Computing). First let me tell you NOT to buy from Apple Store for your hard drive and/or memory upgrade. They are totally out of price list. I got my Mac Pro first with one 500 Gb Seagate drive. Then I added 2 x 500 Gb hard drives from Apple. I payed them 199,00 $ each
Last September, I upgraded the drive bays with 4 x 1.5 Tb from OWC. I paid them 229.00 $ each!
199,00 $ for 500 Gb or 229,00 $ for 1.5 Tb (that"s 3 times 500 Gb) which one would you take? And we are talking about two models from Seagate running at 7200 RPM, with 32 Mb of buffer.
    I mean... What is that?!!?
And the memory! Don't even think about it.
    I got first 4GB Matched Set (2 x 2GB) for 147,99 $ in September from OWC and my second order was 4GB Matched Set (2 x 2GB) for 132,79 $ in October.
I payed a total of 280,78 $ for 8GB of RAM while the price for this upgrade on Apple Store woul have cost me 1998,00 $
    *+Source Apple Store :+*
    *+Apple Memory Module 4GB 800MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM ECC 2x2GB $999.00+*
    Multiply that by 2!
Now how much memory would you need?
I am not a Final Cut Pro user, but I use Final Cut Express a lot, with animation QuickTime movies exported from my Astronomy software Starry Night Pro Plus.
Yesterday I posted this into a thread to answer a user :
+Every morning I have my preferred applications started: Mail, Safari, iTune, Aperture and Final Cut Express. I just did a test for you. I started Mail, Safari, Aperture, Final Cut Express, Starry Night Pro Plus (OpenGL Astronomy Software), Terminal, Quicktime, TextEdit and NeoOffice.+
+With all these apps running, I still have 6.48G of Free RAM out from the 10G installed!+
+It's when I start hungry applications like VMWare Fusion running Windows XP, or Quicktime with a lot of movies opened that I could see the memory level going low!+
+Your bottle neck in video editing will probably be the video card, after the disk speed. Be sure to use 7200 RPM disk and eSATA for your video plans if possible. Firewire 800 will works fine on external drive but it could giggle. I had an ATI Radeon HD 2600 that I recently upgraded to an ATI Radeon HD 4870. the drivers aren't ready yet from Apple. We are all waiting for the next OS X release 10.5.7 for the drivers! For now, I am running on Beta drivers.+
+It's hard to say by now if I have better performance into Final Cut Express because the movie I was working on was an animation movie using plans exported from Starry Night Pro Plus via Quicktime and "animation" codec without any compression. As soon as I make a modification, I still have to render the output for smooth playing.+
Now, after some test with Starry Night Pro Plus this morning, I can safety say that Starry Night Pro Plus with Open GL does use my video card extra speed and that my experience navigating into the Universe is much better and smooth.
But honestly, even if I have to admit that I am using the Beta drivers for the HD 4870, I must say that I have very big doubt that Final Cut Express does use the extra power of the HD 4870 compare to the HD 2600!
In fact, I am searching the support thread for this answer.
Does anyone can say if Final Cut Express or Final Cut Pro does make use of the extra hardware feature of the ATI Radeon HD 4870 or not?

  • 10.7.3 USB Lockup on mid-2010 Mac Pro

    Hello,
I updated my mid-2010 Mac Pro to update 10.7.3 this morning. Since then, I have had three occasions today, each one worse than the previous, where all USB devices connected just locked up completely and were totally unresponsive.
This includes my keyboard, mouse, and video camera.  Those are the only devices that are connected to this computer.
One at a time I have tried disconnecting and reconnecting each device with no success.  Interestingly on a couple of occasions, my keyboard would stop working but the mouse daisy chained out of the keyboard worked without any issues.
The most recent incident absolutely everything locked up and the only option I had was to do a hard reset of the computer.  When I logged back in I quickly enabled the Bluetooth support and grabbed my wireless keyboard and mouse so that I can work.
Has anyone else encountered this yet?  I know there aren't that many Mac Pro users any more.
In the meantime, Time Machine is performing a full backup and I think I will downgrade back to 10.7.2.
I wish I could go back to 10.6.8 but since this Mac Pro shipped with 10.7.2, it will not accept an earlier version of OS X.  :-(

Wow, Same issue here on my Early 2008 Mac Pro. After 10.7.3 update, my USB ports have been behaving erratically. The problem actually seems to be getting progressively worse too.
From what Ive gathered so fat, it seems almost as if the ports are now underpowered. Plugging a keyboard directly into the USB port seems to work indefinitely. As soon as I add other devices to same port, the new device won't work.
My first assumption was that my USB hub was shot, but then I tried the ports on the back of my Cinema Display and they were all jacked up too.
I tried plugging another keyboard directly into the front USB port but That didn't work either, as it seems there was no power for it due to the other devices plugged into the back. I unplugged everything but the front keyboard and it still didn't work until I restarted it.
Extremely hard to troubleshoot how this issue is behaving. Like I said, erratic is probably best description.
This is the worst bug I've personally experienced after an update to an OS since I've been using Macs on System 7.
I really hope Apple fixes this ASAP.

  • Slow render speed with new Mac Pro / NVIDIA 8800

I bought a new Mac Pro to replace a dual G5 because I have a number of Motion projects to finish quickly. My local dealer recommended the NVIDIA 8800 as it has 512 mb RAM (versus 128 on my old machine). I'm finding that the render time is worse than with the G5. I have yet to successfully render a 1 minute segment using Compressor (I've left it to run overnight several times with no success).
In Activity Monitor I'm seeing this message: CompressorTranscoder (Not Responding). But none of Batch Monitor, Compressor or Motion are unresponsive - not indicating any hung applications.
I've read that version 10.5.5 has compromised the NVIDIA card with Motion but haven't been able to get any reliable corroboration. As the Mac Pro shipped with 10.5.5 I can't really roll back to an earlier version.
Any advice? Anyone with similar experiences? I'm trying to render on a new iMac with 4 GB of RAM (with the ATI 2600 video card) but it doesn't seem to be working as it is an hour in and shows at least three more hours.

  • Any advice on Mac Pro setup? Have 2TB of image/video, need it all backed up

I'm looking at purchasing a Mac Pro (currently have a MBP and 2 1TB external drives).
I'm new to the world of RAID and not sure how to best spec out the drive configuration.
I have about 2TB of unique data (outside of my internal drive) which I would like to have completely backed up - this consists of image files of all sizes (tiny to 200MB), and lots of video for editing.
I have no clue how to set this up - I only recently started editing images and video, so haven't had to deal with these conztraints before.
    1. I'm guessing Bay 1 should be either 500GB of 1TB, and hold my basics (email, calendar, etc) as well as all of my apps and their associated files.
I would certainly want this drive to be backed up, I assume maybe so I can simply boot off a clone of Bay 1 if this one fails?
    2. Outside of Bay 1, I have 1.5-2TB of unique data right now, and but probably won't get up past 3TB anytime soon. How do I best make sure I have everything backed up, and keep things running quickly?
    3. How should I incorporate Time Machine, if at all?
Thanks so much in advance for any advice!!

    Hi there,
Basically, unless you go for super-expensive SAS-Drives and the Hardware-RAID card, you will be using SATA drives in your Mac Pro. You've obviously got four internaldrive bays which you can, as you said, fill with 4x 1 TB drives (from Apple, or any other compliant SATA drive (some chose Samsung, some Seagate, some Western Digital(WD)).
What he is talking about is a card that gives you a SATA externally (eSATA), which can then be connected via a cable to a set of drives in an external enclosure.
There are dedicated SATA controller cards, and apparently you could even use a simple "extender cable" as your Mac Pro comes with unused internal SATA connectors (http://www.macnn.com/articles/07/04/20/mac.pro.esata.extender/
    http://macenstein.com/default/archives/678
    - at $25 a rather inexpensive alternative perhaps?). However, I don't know if you might be losing performance compared to a dedicates SATA controller card for an external drive set (likely).
You will find plenty of different manufacturers of these combinations of drives and drive-housings, here's just one for illustration purposes:
    http://www.mbsdirect.com/product.php?productid=17322
    Have fun!
Let me know how it went, I am looking for a similar solution in about a month, after my new Mac Pro ships in a few weeks... that will be soo fast compared to my current setup!
