Mac pro shutdowns unexpectidly and then wont start

My mac pro early 2009 shuts down and then it wont start up. i unplug the a/c power and wait 1 week and it would do the same problem.  I try with a power supply from my friend and would do the same (shut downs and wont start up, only unpluging ps and waiting a few days)

you only need to wait 20 seconds, but you need to unplug everything, all cables and displays, and you need to hit the power on button for 10 seconds while unplugged.
That resets the SMC. Also do a PRAM reset from cold boot helps.
Then look at your startup disk, what you have connected or installed. PCIe, GPU, RAM, external devices.
If those are not normal shutdowns, then and are freeze or crash, you have more trouble than you had with the directory of your system. Clone it. Test the clone.

  • 2009 Mac Pro turns on and then powers off a few seconds after.

    Help!!!
I have two Mac Pro's with separate issues.  First Mac Pro does turn on but then cuts off by the time it gets to the Login window.  I opened it up and saw that when the computer is on, there is a red light in the middle of the processor board.  Is this normal? And what should i do to see what is causing this?  I had 16GB RAM but i tried swapping out chips to see if maybe it was a RAM issue.  Same issue even if all i put in is 2GB of RAM.
Second mac Dosent even turn on.  Also a 2009 model.  the red light that normally blinks once when you plug power in on the Main board, doesn't even flicker.  I feel it's the power supply,  but before i try swapping power supplies i thought i would see if i could get a second opinion.
    Please Help
    Thanks

On your first example, if the Mac detects Directory Damage such that the Boot Volume cannot be mounted, it will run the equivalent of a Disk Utility ( Repair disk ) at Startup. If that does not repair the problem, you will not be starting up, so it powers down.
On the second one, the traditional method of debugging those difficult problems is to remove everything that could be dragging down power, and hope for the Chime. Yes that means everything. If you remove all the RAM, but it is otherwise working, it will flash the power light to indicate "not enough working RAM to start up". Add back some RAM and you should get the chime. add back the graphics card and you should get the blinking question mark. Add a boot drive and... so on.

    Guitar21,
your MacBook Pro has booted into its Recovery mode. From the OS X Utilities menu, select Disk Utility. On the left-hand side of the Disk Utility window, select your internal disk’s boot partition (typically called “Macintosh HD”). On the right-hand side, press the Verify Disk button if it’s not greyed out; if it is greyed out, or if it reports that errors were found, press the Repair Disk button. Once the verification/repair is completed, exit Disk Utility and select Restart from the Apple menu to restart in normal mode. Does it get to the login screen now?

  • I have a Mac Pro Mid 2010 and Mac Pro Mid 2012, both running OS 10.8.5. When working in Illustrator the Display starts to make my Document trasparent and I can see the desktop through my document. I have to toggle my display res back and forth to fix it?

I have a Mac Pro Mid 2010 and 2012 both running OS 10.8.5. Both using ATI Radeon HD 5770 1052 MB vid cards.
Using the standard Display that came with the Macs, everytime I'm working in Ilustrator CS5 or 6, the Document I am working on gets transparent, and I when I try to move a pallete or the Document itself, the pallet or doc leaves trails from where it was to where I moved it. The only way I can resolve it is to open the Display prefs, choose a lower res, then switch it back to the "Best for Display" option. This started happening on both machines after the 10.8.5 update. I have since gone through all the Pram and Board resets, even had Apple replace the Vid Card and nothing helps. Anybody have this issue. It only happens in Illustrator.

  • Mac Pro Power Up failure - Mac Pro goes on and off

Since few months my Mac Pro first generation (2x 2.66 GHz Dual core 8 GB RAM with ATI Radeon XT1900X 512 Mb video card) frequently does not start up. When pushing the power button it starts up and in few seconds turns off again. I have reset the SMC, done a hardware test for RAM etc. The machine has had a dure test at a service provider but the problem was not found.
Few weeks ago the problem began again and sometimes the Mac Pro starts up normal and sometimes the problem occurs again. And sometimes the Mac Pro goes of spontaniously. Can this be the Video card causing this problem? The RAM seems to be OK, cause I replaced the 4x 2xGB DIMMS with the older 2x 512 MB DIMMS that came with the Mac Pro and the same problem occurs.
Has anyone has this problem and/or knows a solution?

I just starting having this problem today. I turned on my Mac Pro this morning and after a few seconds it shut down and then restarted. It kept doing that so I finally unplugged the computer. Prior to today the computer would sometimes shutdown or restart on it's own but I could usually get it boot back up and was able to use the computer. It's still unplugged and I'll leave it that way until I get home from work today. I did open up the case and blasted out as much of the dust that's built up with a can of compressed air. I've read about resetting the SMC but can I do that if the computer keeps restarting after a few seconds? I have AppleCare for the Mac Pro should I just set up an appointment and take it in? I worried that it may be an issue with the power supply. Any suggestions? I appreciate the assistance!!!
    Thanks!!

  • First time user trying to set up new Mac pro, wireless mouse and wireless keyboard together?

So  I just bought a new Mac Pro, wireless keyboard and mouse. i am a first time Mac user. How do I even get started......connect the wireless mouse and key board to the Mac Pro desktop to even get started??

Just turn on the mouse and keyboard and observe that the green light comes on and starts to blink then turn on the Mac. The Mac should give you on-screen instructions.

  • Mac pro 3,1 and ati hd5870 overheating (shut down issues)

Hi all I have an early 2008 mac pro 16gig ram and the ati hd 5870 on dual boot windows 7 64bit, it has been running brill for about a year but then I started getting random shut downs in windows and the occasional one in macOS 10.7 I upgrade to 10.8 loved some of the new features but the shuts down became unbareable in both OS I would also just get black screen on startup and have to do forced reboots etc.
If I took out the hd5870 and put back inthe original ati card everything worked as normal except the orginal card isnt supported in fcpX and I need this for my work when I take out the hd5870 card it is boiling hot so I have done some research and it appears I am not the only one with over heating issues.
I have seen there are several third party graphic card cooling options but mac being mac I dont seem to have any free additional power outputs to power a third party cooling device, so my question is this
1, is anyone selse having these issues and has figured out a way to stop the shut downs
    2. has anyone or does anyone know how i can keep my card cool?
inside my mac is squeaky clean and so is the graphics card.
ps, typical it is just outside the 1 year warranty and the card is so expensive i didn;'t want to buy 1 every single year

    @ Hatter
Yup prior card was 8800gt and new card is nice and snug.  10.8 was not clean install, was upgrade.  Ill try safeboot although not sure how/why that will fix any long term issues i have (which are random).. Trying 10.7 i had the same issues and was hoping that 10.8 wld fix.. Why go back to 10.6.8 when it should work in todays day and age? :(
    @ Grant
Have done that now although not sure why something like this is not in the owners manual?!
Thanks for the help/suggestions so far guys, much apprec.. Feels like my pro is dying on me slowly but surely...
    Any other bright ideas?

  • Mac Pro RAID Card and Western Digital drives

I'm having huge troubles with these items.
I first installed four WD7500AYYS (Raid Edition) to build a RAID 5 and install Leopard on it. At this point, one of the drives was probably DOA and didn't show up in the bay. I then reinstalled the Seagate that shipped with the machine, then proceeded to create another enhanced JBOD raid with one of the WD drives. After a couple of seconds, RAID utility reported an error (disk about to fail and such). I then tried with another one. The process ended with a kernel panic after two hours, while RAID utility was still marking the drive for enhanced JBOD. That disk never show up again, in any bay.
At this point, I'm left with two WD drives. I can't get past the creation of a RAID set with them, no matter what. Either RAID utility reports an error, or it says the disk has been ejected, or it keeps create the RAID for hours... The later usually ends with a "force quit", or a force shutdown. During these attemps, the RAID card went missing once, then it appeared again on the following reboot. The RAID battery, which was fully charged at first, is now being "repaired" (charging ?).
I then ran AHT to see whether there was something wrong. No errors reported.
Because all four drives were Raid Edition, I thought this could be the root of the problems. So I bought a Caviar SE16 (WD5000AAKS). To no avail. It fails too, in the very same way. And now it no longer appears in any bay.
The last step I took was to remove the RAID card (connecting the iPass connector to the motherboard). Out of the five WD drives, only two RE2 (the two that still show up with the RAID card) do appear in disk utility. But disk utility never ends "writing the partition map" or "preparing for initialization".
By now, I end up with five WD drives that appear to be just dead, as if they were killed by the RAID card trying to RAID them. The only drive that works, with or without the RAID card, in any bay, is the Seagate. I didn't try to fiddle with it though (I'm reluctant to format it just to see whether I can create an enhanced JBOD raid with it).
So the question is, are Western Digital drives compatible with this RAID card ? If they do, then how a RAID card can kill them in such a way while keeping the Seagate alive ?
I'm lost in conjectures. I don't even know if/how I can bring all the WD drives back to life. I'm not sure the RAID card is faulty, I've already lost a lot of time and money, I'm not willing to buy yet another drive to see it fail too, and my Mac Pro is kind of useless as I don't want to spend time on installing/configuring everything I need on a drive that is bound to be replaced by a larger RAID 5 array.
Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

Someone yesterday or Friday, had a system with 4 x 1TB drives and Pro RAID, but in their case, it was determined later Saturday that drive bay #1 was not functioning.
Hopefully these fully retail drives, not OEMs, and I would think they are fine. They are what I would use (Sonnet Tempo only supports RE of the WD drives). Someone else, Danish?, had 3 out of 4 WD drives were DOA.
I've never had trouble buying over a dozen from OWC, so it does seem odd.
If you have SoftRAID 3.6.6 I would use that to zero the first and last 100 sectors, or you can begin to zero the whole drive and cancel at any time, just to check the health of the drive and that it can zero and not produce I/O errors.
There are two other methods for accessing and managing Mac Pro RAID, ARD and CLI
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306231
Originally, only Apple drives were supported. My understanding was that this changed. But the only article I found in KB dates back to Aug '07:
Question: What drives does Apple support with the Mac Pro RAID Card and the Xserve RAID Card?
Answer: +Only Apple drives are supported with the Mac Pro RAID Card and the Xserve RAID Card.+
My understanding that 3rd party retail drives such as WD RE2 750GB, Seagate, Hitachi were supported as well since the article was written - and I can't find where I read that, but sure that I did, as this was discussed in the past.
I'd like to find an official article. Even my friend Google was helpless
