Mac Pro sleeps after being woken up by WOL
Hi Folks
In order to wake up my Mac Pro on demand, I have set up Wake Over LAN (WOL) over the network and enabled "wake for network access" at System Preferences > Energy Saver on the Mac Pro. Now I am able to wake up the machine from my local router or across the Internet, but just wake up for a little while only.
The issue is, after the Mac Pro is being woken up by WOL for about 30 seconds, the machine always goes into sleep mode again for no reason. During the short alive period, the virtual machines running on the Mac Pro are pingable but the monitors are not on and the replaying YouTube video has no audio.
However, if I click the mouse or press the keyboard, the Mac Pro can be woken up as expected: the monitors are powered on, YouTube video is audible, all VMs are pingable too.
Why does my Mac Pro get woken up this way? How to fix it?
Thanks heaps in advance.
Regards,
B
> Now I am able to wake up the machine from my local router or across the Internet, but just wake up for a little while only.
From my local router, I use below way to wake up the Mac Pro.
I can also wake up the Mac this way over the Internet.
For your information, I can successfully wake up other WOL enabled Windows machines this way on the same network with no problem.
As mentioned, both ways can only wake up the Mac Pro for about 30 seconds, then machine will automatically sleep again though at System Preferences I have set the computer to sleep after "3 hrs" or "never", as shown below.
What I expect is just to make the Mac Pro back to work the same way like I locally press the keyboard or click the mouse, not to automatically sleep again in seconds.
Any thought please? Thanks!

The behavior is normal when clicking the mouse or pressing the key to wake the Mac, the issue only occurs when trying to wake via WOL. Never thought the same wake process could have different results.
Please explain specifically how you are trying to WOL, what you want to accomplish by doing so, & how long you think whatever it is you want to accomplish should take.
Also, what VM's are you running & by what method do they run (like via Parallels or whatever).

Cinima Display fades Between blue and the deskop after my Mac Pro sleeps
Hello all,
I really hope someone can help. I have a Mac Pro Running 10.5.4 and a 23 Inch Cinema Display. When I wake my machine from sleeping the desktop appears then about a second later the screen fades blue. After a second of blue it fades back to the desktop. This continues on forever and the machine is unusable until I cut the power and restart the machine.
The same issue will happen if the resolution on the monitar is changed.
I have tried to reset the pram, reset the smc, take out the graphics card and then place it back. I switch the cable from port one to two of my graphics card. I also reinstalled leopard as well as downgrading back to tiger.
When I hook the monitor up to my macbook it sleeps and awakes fine.
Finally this morning I realized that if I discounted using the monitors built in hub then the screen will awaken without issue.
Any idea's? Has anyone had a similar issue?Hi there. It could be one of your drives is actually defective and causing I/O to slow down to a crawl. To verify this, try inserting the DVD that came with your Mac Pro and restarting the machine while holding down the 'C' key. This will boot up the machine off the DVD and bypass your hard disks. If it boots quicker there could be a problem with the drives or something else.

Problem with turning macbook pro on after being put to sleep
My macbook pro is acting strange, if i put it to sleep after 50% battery and turn it on again i get a grey screen, then it turns off. if i use the power button again it boots up and tell me that the time and date is not accurate then it turns off again.
Try a SMC reset
Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

Mac Pro freezes after sleep, wont shut down, and 5870 issue
Hi,
I just got my new Mac Pro 3.33Ghz hexacore a couple of days ago and I've been having some issues with it.
1) When waking up the comp from sleep and its been cold for a while, the Mac Pro freezes. I can still move the mouse but that's about it. So, I have to do a hard restart. But...
2) Since last night I'm not able to turn the MP off. When I try to shut it down from the menu it closes all the apps and nothing but the background and dock shows and it gets stuck there. So I have to do a hard restart, but when pressing down the power button it just goes to sleep rather then shutting down, so only way to turn it off is to pull out the cord.
3) And the last problem I'm having is in bootcamp. When I play games (Battlefield Bad Company 2 or Crysis) the computer freezes after 3 min or so. The screen either turns blue or black and I have to shut it down. I am able to do the hard restart in Windows 7, in fact I just have to press the power button ones and it shuts off correctly.
I'm really frustrated since in the last 2 months I've had 3 iMacs and this MP and all have had problems. My old 20in iMac has been running for a couple of years now and has never had any problem...
Also, if I have to take it to the Apple store, is there anyway a tech can come to my house? I'm tired of going to the Apple store all the time, its a big hassle taking the comp there, plus I don't feel like they're really helping me.
Thanks for your help!just wanted to update you guys on what the official stance of OWC is on this situation. I had the same problem like you guys. I have the 240GB OWC extreme pro SSD in my Mac Pro 3,1. When it goes to sleep, and i leave it sleeping for a day -- upon returning, it will freeze up with the spinning wheel of death.
This is what they had to say about it:
"While Sleep will work with our SSDs, there have been reports of system hangs in relation to hibernation mode which is the deep state of Sleep. We suggest not using ANY program that puts your computer into hibernation mode when using an SSD. SandForce is working on this issue and it will be addressed in a future firmware update.
Normal, automatic sleep mode functions perfectly with no issues. But if you need to try and fix the hibernation issue with your Mac revision, please Open up Terminal (Applications>Utilities>Terminal) and go through the following steps:
Type: sudo pmset hibernatemode 0
Press: return/enter.
Type: your password when it prompts you to, then press return/enter again.
You have successfully disabled hibernation! Go ahead and exit Terminal.
Also, some have chose to use the application SmartSleep, which is free online. http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/26979/smartsleep
SmartSleep is an application that you can use to set the hibernation mode on your computer.
I apologize for the inconvenience. I sincerely appreciate your patience and understanding in this matter and hope you will continue to bear with us as our extreme SSD product line transitions through these evolutions and unforeseen road bumps. Please let us know if there's anything else we may do to help."
--I would like to add that the OWC SSD is great. And since Downloading smart sleep and disabling deep sleep aka hibernate, the issue has been totally resolved. Im pretty sure the terminal entry works just as well. But I liked the added convenience of the other features of smartsleep. So there you go guys. -
Hi, my Mac Pro apparently goes to sleep whenever I leave it for a significant amount of time, i.e. to go to sleep at night. When I come back to it, I hit the spacebar to wake it up. The computer makes noise like it is waking, the screen comes on long enough for me to open an application like Entourage then it immediately shuts back down. In the beginning when this problem happened, I could touch the space bar and it would just come on, now after so many times of that happening, the problem has graduated.
Now nothing works to wake it back up. I know that it hasn't shut down because the light is on on the computer. However, the keyboard doesn't work at this time, the mouse has no effect, nothing will bring my display back up. I even touch the power button on the monitor and the monitor appears to be working properly, but it cannot show me my display screen. The only things that fixes the problem is if I hold the computers power button until it powers off then power it on again.
The fact that it wasn't doing this when I first got it tells me there is something seriously wrong with it. Does anyone out there know why this is happening? I'm afraid that eventually one day I will hold the power button and power it off and it won't come back on.
BTW, I searched the discussion forums and didn't find the exact problem discussed.Hey Will. It's interesting you are having the same issue. May I ask what generation your mac pro is? Mine is a 2006.
As I said in another thread, I have been in a game of troubleshooting phone tag with an apple specialist for about a week and a half now with almost nothing to show for it. Today he suggested I try plugging my computer in without going through a surge protector. Although the protector I have is brand new, I tried anyway and the machine still shutdown on a wake attempt when plugged directly into a different outlet.
Like you, I am getting VERY fed up with this issue. Although it's intermittent, it's serious enough to cause significant problems and it's not something I am willing to live with.
My instincts say the problem is with the power supply or possibly the SMC on the logic board. However, until apple is willing to fix the machine, I seem to be stuck trying to prove to them there is actually an issue. All in all it's shutdown on wake at least 20 times now, which should be more than enough to warrant a service visit in my opinion.
The truly discouraging thing is I submitted the console logs (the platform failure ones) to the tech specialist and he forwarded them to the apple engineers. I had high hopes the seemingly important logs might shed some light on the cause and therefore allow a fix to occur. Instead, when I spoke with him today, he said the messages didn't indicate a cause of the issue. (Again, this is according to the engineer who looked at the logs.)
So, as it stands, I am being told to try all sots of stuff to narrow down the root of the issue. I even tried a re installation of snow leopard to no avail.
I'll post again if anything new comes up. -
Mac Pro Sleep/Wakeup Issue in Windows 7 x64
I have experienced two issues related to sleep in Windows 7 x64 on my Mac Pro 3,1 with Bootcamp 3.2 for a while. From search results it seems several people also experienced similar issues, but no solution/workaround yet.
The first issue is that sometimes the Mac Pro won't wake up from sleep. If I made it to enter sleep, then it (almost) always wake up. But if it enters sleep itself, then there's a chance (around 25%) that it won't wake up. The fans and HDDs are running, but the screen is black, mouse/keyboard no response and I can't ping it. After forcing it to shutdown and restart it, there will be an "HAL Error" in Eventlog ("The platform firmware has corrupted memory across the previous system power transition. Please check for updated firmware for your system"
). Some folks experienced the same issue in this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11839029
The second issue is that if I disable Hybrid Sleep with the Apple Bluetooth Keyboard connected, the Mac Pro will not sleep with the HDDs shutdown but fans running at full speed. If I removed the batteries from the Apple Bluetooth Keyboard, it goes to sleep and wakes up normally. Whether the Magic Mouse is connected or not doesn't make a difference.
I can't reproduce either issues in OS X.
Would really appreciate if someone can share some insights or workarounds. Thanks!Yes, almost the same problem!
Please someone help... -
Lion/2008 Mac Pro oddities after HW upgrade
I recently upgraded my 2008 Mac Pro from/to the following:
8 x Factory 1GB FB-DIMM/8 x Mushkin 2GB FB-DIMM (http://www.mushkin.com/Memory/Apple/976598A.aspx)
4 x Factory 1TB Hitachi Deskstar (ARC RAID5)/4 x 2TB WD RE4 (ARC RAID0+1)
A couple days ago (a few weeks after the upgrade) the machine started to act funny. Pretty much the only symptom is that the Disk Mounter would silently crash when trying to mount a .dmg (without ever being able to actually open a the .dmg) with various errors in Console.app:
EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV)
KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS
I tried all the usual suspects. Repair permissions, reboot to DVD and run a disk repair, PRAM and SMC reset. I even tried to boot into safe mode, but the machine never wound up making it to safe mode. The progress bar just moved an inch or so and the spinning gear just kept on spinning; for 5 hours. Nothing worked.
I read thatre-running the 10.7.2 combo update might help, but it comes packaged as a .dmg, so I'm unable to open it.
Strange.
I ran AHT from the original DVDs and the new 16GB of memory tested just fine (I only ran a single pass, but I could probably run an extended test). I yanked all the USB and extra displays from the machine so it was only one monitor, a keyboard and my trackpad.
This is really, really confusing for me. Memory tests fine, can't open .dmgs and can't boot into safe mode. Other than that, the machine runs perfectly.
My next step is to take the 4 drives out of the 0+1 RAID array and try a single drive outside of the RAID card to see if that makes any difference. I haves no aversion to blowing the machine away and re-installing it again. I just re-installed when I upgraded to the 4 x 2TB drives, so short of a very small subset of my home directry beign copied back from a Time Machine backup, the install is pretty virgin. I'm not sure it will make a difference, but I'm open to trying it anyway.
I'm hoping someone here might have some ideas because things just aren't adding up.Niether the original Apple OEM memory nor the Mushkin memory shows as ECC in System Profiler. I included the Disk Mounter crash report. I don't believe that I can attach the entire thing here, so I just copy and pasted it. Hope no one minds :| BTW: The included crash report was generated with 2GB of OEM memory. I'm perhaps less inclined now to suspect it as being a memory issue.

Solution to another Mac Pro sleep failure
I recently developed problems with my 2008 Mac Pro (3,1) failing to enter sleep modes. Attached displays no longer went to sleep, and hard disks would not spin down. After many hours of investigating this, I found that the Nalpeiron Protec6 software was the culprit. Never heard of it you say? Well I had not either. It is installed surreptitiously by a variety of software vendors as an anti-piracy mechanism. In my case it was installed by Nik Software's Viveza 2 installer; currently this installer does not tell you that they are installing another 3rd party application.
The Nalpeiron Protec6 software is installed in /Library/StartupItems/Protec6 folder. You can tell if the daemon software is running by typing ps ax | grep 'nalpeiron' in Terminal.app.
Renaming, changing load order, etc., didn't help. Viveza 2 won't run without it. So for now, goodbye Viveza and goodbye Protec6. Nuking the Protec6 folder and a quick restart seems to be all that's needed to rid your system of this garbage. Hope this is helpfulThis problem is not just with Nik, but also onOne software. They both use Protec6 for their licensing and people have been experiencing these issues with either or (or both).
I have two solutions for you. Both come from the comments in this post:
http://trick77.com/2010/08/08/mac-doesnt-auto-sleep-anymore-hard-disks/
Solution 1: Some guy wrote an Applescript program that starts and stops the Protec6 service from running. So you can start it when you need it and then stop it so your computer can sleep. He has instructions and a download to the program in those comments.
Solution 2: Based on what someone says later in these comments, the newer update to Plug In Suite and Phototools fix this issue. Presumably bundled with a newer, bug free Protec6. I haven't tested this, but I bet if you install a demo version of the Plug In Suite or Phototools it will overwrite your Protec6 folder with the newer one and then Viveza will work as well and your computer will sleep again. -
2008 Quad 3 Ghz Mac Pro freeze after startup
I'm writing this on my MacBook Pro since my tower is no longer functional. I'm not sure what to do with it but I'll do my best to describe what it's doing. It is a 2008 Mac Pro, with two dual core 3 Ghz Xenon processors, 10 GB Ram, 3.75 TB hard drive space, ATI Radeon 1900 XT video card.
Push power to boot up sometimes it boots up normally other times the fan just just excellerates to high and the tower does nothing, and I have to force a shut down. On the next boot up it always does the fan thing again resulting in a second force shut down, then a second attempt to boot back up same result, almost always on the third attempt it will boot up to the desktop. if that's not odd enough it gets weirder.
Whether it takes me three tries to get to the desktop or it goes there the first try it will run for a few min, then the screen gets blocky (like a pattern of squares or artifacts all over the screen and the system is now completely unresponsive except I can see the mouse moving, I've waited to see if it will come out of it, but it doesn't so I force a shut down.
At first I thought, maybe my hard drive is failing so I get the System restore OSX disk. It behaves the same way when booted up with the System disc. The more I think and look around I'm beginning to think the video card is going bad. This kind of behavior was intermittent at times but today I can't use it for more than a few min. I took the door off and after letting it set I booted again but again still same thing. the only place that I feel a lot of heat is from the video card especially around the vent near the ports. I've tried removing the card but it doesn't seem to want to come out. I've removed the bracket with the two screws It feels like it's coming out of the socket but something is holding it into the case and I don't want to force it.
So here are my questions, does this sound like it's a bad video card? And if so is there some trick to getting it out, even if it's just to look at it and perhaps clean any dust out of it in case it's getting clogged.
Thanks,
Mikeit would seem it's in the acceptable range, I'll have to look up Temperature monitor and see if I need to use a SMC Fan Control to up the default.
The inside was only moderately dusty which I went ahead and cleaned out, I make it a habit of cleaning the insides out from time to time. The only exception being the Radeon 1900 XT which after removing the fan and giving it a good shot of air and a large clump of dust coming out the other end (by the heatsink fins) makes me think that that is the likely culprit of my 1900XT's early demise. Cleaning out the card and putting it back in though made no difference, so I think the overheating damage is done. I have thought about giving the oven bake method a shot if the card is crap anyway there's nothing to lose. Also thought about checking the firmware to see if it needs updated.
4SNS is a sensor of some kind which I guess the "ICBC" refers to the specific sensor? A search of Mac Pro sensor ICBC came up with "ICBC Current, CPU-B core current" perhaps that will give me an idea what to look for in monitoring the heat. As long as it's not a fatal warning I'm happy, I was starting to freak out a little thinking the logic board was bad and the unit being out of warranty facing the reality of either taking it to a service center and paying an arm and a leg to fix or to just ebay the mac and use the money towards a new or newer MP. I can't really afford to dump close to a thousand bucks into a board replacement at an apple service center. I'm thankful I bought a laptop last year or I'd have no computer to work on. Hopefully once I get the Radeon 5770 sanity will be restored plus the 5770 is a better card than the 1900xt anyway. Mac Connection sure is taking it's sweet time processing the order though... -
Mac Pro Slower after adding second hard drive
My work computer is a Mac Pro 3,1 running Lion 10.7.3 with 4GB RAM and a 1TB hard drive. It was performing well running programs like Adobe CS5 and Final Cut Pro until I added a second 1TB drive (Western Digital WD1001FALS). After that upgrade Photoshop is way slower while programs like InDesign and Final Cut are noticable slower.
Is there any reason for this? Anything that can be done outside of a memory upgrade?Let me try to direct you to some tips on CS5, and suggest that more hard drives properly used (OS, scratch, data, backup, array) can help, but that one drive and 4GB RAM is under performing.

What are you using the WD1001FALS for? data? scratch?
And open Activity Monitor and check pageouts. Unless your use if very very light, I can't see that as being enough for even CS5 code and some OS X let alone any more apps.

Mac Pro quits after 30 minutes of use!?
Hello,
I'm having a problem with a group of Mac Pro towers that are set up in a lab. The problem is:
The machine abruptly goes into a power save mode, the display goes black and
is impossible to wake. The computer is still on but inaccessible and the only way
to wake the machine is through a hard restart.
The problem has been occurring intermittently and randomly since last Spring. The specs on those machines are:
MacPro, 2x3 GHz Quad core – Intel Xeon
2 GB Ram
OS 10.6.6
The machine used to be attached to a
Dell 2407WFPb LCD monitor but has since been replaced with an
Acer - 24" Widescreen Flat-Panel TFT-LCD HD Monitor
The problem has caused a lot of issues and been a real beast to try to
troubleshoot as it occurs randomly. Lately it seems to have gotten worse, I was able to recreate it and it is now occurring after approx. 30 minutes of use. Here's a list of what I've tried (unsuccessfully).
- Turned monitor on/off.
- Unplugged monitor from power supply.
- Unplugged DVI cable from Mac Pro and reinserted
- Tried both DVI ports
- Tried a different monitor
- Changed energy settings on computer to NEVER
- Repaired permissions
- SMS reset
- Updated to Snow Leopard
- Computer put on new UPS
- Tried VGA cable with VGA to DVI adaptor (because read that the DVI could be
an issue)
- Wiped machine and did clean install of Snow Leopard, FCP, CS5 and Microsoft Office
- Bought new fleet of monitors (because researched that this problem occurred
fairly regularly with this model of Dell monitor and because this problem never
occurred with machine attached to Apple Cinema Display)
Please help! Are you having this problem with all the MP's, or only one?
The problem occurs more regularly on 4 of the six MP's we have. Two of the fleet have never experienced it, the rest have the problem intermittently.
Is there some reason why you're still running 10.6.6?
No, just haven't updated to 10.6.7 yet, BUT, one machine is 10.6.7 and still has the issue
Besides what you mentioned, are you running any other third-party software? Nope
Are any other peripherals connected? Nope
Are there any error messages in the system log?
Not sure, I attached an image of the log right before the crash but I'm not sure what it means!
Is there a panic log or an application crash log? Nope -
Mac Pro Sleep/Headphone Jack Problem
Hello!
Just finished setting up a shiny new Mac Pro 2,66 Ghz (stock config).
Reinstalled all my stuff and it is working fine, except for two things:
1. If I put it to sleep, either via the Apple-Menu or the front button, the machine sleeps (light pulses on and off), but if I wake it up using the keyboard or the front button, I hear the startup chime and the machine starts up from scratch again. I tried resetting the PRAM and SMC, but to no avail.
2. I can not get the Headphone jack to work, it does not show up in the sound preferences, I only get to choose between internal speaker, Digital Out or LineOut.
Any Tips for me?
Bye, Frido.2. I can not get the Headphone jack to work, it does
not show up in the sound preferences, I only get to
choose between internal speaker, Digital Out or
LineOut.
when you plug a headphone into the headphone jack,
the internal speaker turns off and you get sound
in the headphone instead. No need to change the choice. -
Mac Pro freezing after firmware upgrade
Mac Pro froze up twice last night with a "Graphics channel exception" posted as the last post in log. Any ideas as how to fix or anybody else having the same issue?
I thought I'd add one final post to my question. It really has nothing to do with the topic except that has to do with tech support people. When I got my MacPro home and hooked it all back up I then turned it on. To my surprise it started up but there was no video at all. Just got it back because the video didn't work right and now nothing? So after shutting it off and turning it on multiple times, to no avail, I shut it off completely. Then I opened it up and there it was, just as I had suspected, the power supply to the graphics card wasn't connected. Plugged it in and started it back up and now I had video. Now I have 2 new problems. The first is that my Bluetooth doesn't work nearly as good as it should. It won't even find my keyboard and mouse unless I lay them on top of the Mac. So since I already had a USB keyboard and mouse hooked up I decided to move along to the thing that scared me the most about letting somebody else work on my computers. Imagine the horror that I felt when, just as I figured, when the tech guy replaced my old drive with the new one all he did was install OSX on the new one and migrate all my data over from the old one. One problem with this is that while doing so it doesn't migrate any of the Boot Camp partition that contained many hours of work. All is lost I'm sure. I'm pretty sure if all the data from the old drive had just been an exact copy from 1 drive to the other this could have been avoided. Never again will I let them touch my machines without me standing, looking over their shoulder.

I just purchased a Mac Pro and it will not go to sleep. Either by itself or when I try to put it to sleep. Also, I have 4 firewire drives hooked up to it and they will not go to sleep. They are running constantly and getting very warm to the touch.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! Here is what I tried:
1) used the other ethernet outlet, but it did not solve the problem
2) unplugged my cable modem and airport to let them recycle and start-up again, but it did not solve the problem.
3) unplugged the ethernet all together, but it did not solve the problem
So, here is what the system log showed when I tried to pu thte computer to sleep, with the ethernet cable unplugged from the computer:
