Mac pro Slow Performance

Hello Everyone,
I made a similar post about this subject not to long ago but now im back in the same situation. I will just recap everything that i did and hear your guys thoughts on what i did.
So to make a long story short.. I have a 2009 imac that contains all of my applications that i use on a daily basis. I then bought a 2012 12-core Mac Pro. Instead of being patient i wanted to start using this machine right away. I then set up migration assistant on both machines and literally copied everything over from my imac to my newly purchased mac pro. I later realized that this was a bad idea because it brought over boat loads of crap that was not being used (essentially 700GB) My computer was running very slow, defiantly not at speed of what a 12-core should be running at. so i started cleaning it up to the best that i could and was able to clear up 200 or so GB's. I still was not satisfied by the results i was getting. I kept getting beach balls and slow performance overall. so i went out and bought a 120GB SSD drive and figured that would be my best solution... well certainly it was at first. I then cleaned up my applications folder to clear up room in that folder. so after that was done i used migration assistant to transfer JUST the APPLICATIONS over to the SSD. After that was complete i then received a ton of crap on on the SSD. On boot up im not getting a pop up that is attached to a program i use to have on the iMac and is started to run slower than before the migration to the SSD...
So basically this is where i stand. I am thinking about just starting over from scratch and only bring over the files and applications that i need on the SSD. What is the best way to take applications off of my imac and put them onto my mac pro (meaning without migration assistant) The reason i need to transfer them over is because i do not have all of the applications on CD form to just re-install again. However, if i need to get the applications from the CD's for this to work then i will just have tp go through with that extra bit of trouble to do it the right way.
The whole purpose of this is trying to clean up my computer and keep it as organized as possible.
If anyone has any recommendations for the best way to perform this operation, its greatly appreciated!
thanks in advance!

A clean install along with Setup Assistant (or Migration Assistant) really is good and important way to go.
Too many issues moving to a newer OS and it has been made easy.
You can CCC clone the home folders elsewhere.
You can CCC the system and apps to another drifve and retain just your home library (the part that is now hidden which is annoying to some and taking too invasive into user space as if we can't and don't need access?)
~/Library
The only apps you can are ones you may as well just download and mount and drag, the type that lack and don't need to install anything anywheres but the package of the app itself.

Why is my Mac pro slow to Open folders in a Windows SMB share?   We use a Windows Server for graphics storage and I can open the share just fine, but when I attempt to open folders within that share it takes sometimes as long at 15 minutes to display the contents of the folders.  This happend before and I switched to the other NIC port, but now it is doing it in both.  I can open other connections to Windows SMB shares with no problem.

  • Mac Pro slows to a crawl performing routine tasks

I have an early dual 2.66 Dual-Core Xeon Mac Pro. For the last year or so, it's been plagued by very poor performance whenever anything of significance is going on. Some of the most blatant offenders are iTunes iPhone/iPad syncs, Time Machine backups, and certainly more strenuous things like Lightroom batch exports. Whenever something like that is going on, just opening Google in a new Safari window can take 5-10 seconds, along with beachballs, slow typing response, etc.
I've done two OS wipes hoping it was software-related, but that never helped. I've tried defragging, run extended hardware tests using the Apple tool and it found nothing. There's about 50GB of space left on my startup drive, but like I said, this happened on a new, clean install, so I'm sure it's not software. Even though there were no errors, I pulled all but two 2GB memory sticks and performance was still bad with just iTunes and Safari running during a sync. CPU usage is fairly nominal during these episodes, so it's not like something is pegging them. I have a Core Duo and Core 2 Duo MBP and they both run fine. It's not bleeding edge, but this Mac Pro shouldn't be worse than those two, and it is. I'm pretty convinced it's a hardware issue somewhere but I don't know where to go from here. Any suggestions?

I'm having the exact same problem, sluggish performance with nothing going on. I have iTunes running I'm typing in Text Edit and I get one or two words ahead of the cursor. I have to wait a few seconds for everything. Activity monitor shows no CPU hogs. I've looked into the problem being Spotlight indexing, cache files out of control, kotoeri input, any other obscure crevasse in the dark inner workings of this petulant beast I could think of. I've defragged, I've run unix maintenance scripts, repaired permissions (from Terminal, "Maybe it'll work better.") I've researched and investigated and tried everything I can think of. I'm at my wits end. Came here. This is the first confirmation I've had that I'm not insane and someone else has the same issue.
I know there have been some problems with the Radeon 2600, screen goes black and won't revive without holding one's tongue just the right way. Some have reported it eventually just not reviving. I wondered if that had something to do with things. Can't see how though. If I knew it would solve the issue for sure I'd drop the few hundred to relieve the torture, as it is I can't afford a few hundred for a "maybe."
I upgraded to Snow Leopard hoping it would resolve. At first it did. Now it's back. It comes and goes, sometimes I don't notice it, then it gets bad, then it's gone, then it gets really bad, I swear, it stays really bad, I swear some more. I have a 8-Core with 10GB of RAM and I can't use Text Edit without waiting for the cursor? Some thing is amiss.
I don't know that we'll find a solution, it seems so obscure, but misery loves company. I'll let you know if I discover a wonder fix, hoping you'll do the same.

  • Mac Pro - Slow boot, Slow performance

    Hello,
I have a mac pro quad 2.66 running 10.4.11 , 1GB ram . I have a pro tools pciE core card in the computer, 2 20" cinema displays, 1 glyph external firewire 400 drive, and 1 western digital usb hard drive connected to the computer.
Recently the computer started booting really slow, like 5 minutes slow. then the computer started to run extremely slow as well, like un-usable slow. my macbook 1.83 is like a super machine in comparison. If I double click an icon (like finder or cd drive) it takes about 5 - 10 seconds to show the icon is highlighted then another 10 - 20 seconds to open the finder window.
As of now, the computer can sometimes take up to 10 - 15 minutes to boot up, there is no more "startup" noise, and i cant seem to get the computer to boot off of the osx disk. I hold down C from the moment i turn on the computer and i hold it down for about 15 minutes and the computer still starts from the hard drive. the super drive is still working because it can read the disk fine once it boots up.
i dont know what to do, i opened up the computer, it looks somewhat dirty inside. i thought about trying to clean it and see if that helps, dont know what to clean it with though. computer duster? (if thats even the problem). I was thinking some sort of ram error or something, but i dont know if that explains why i cant boot from the install disk to try and repair the startup HD.
    please help, thanks in advance,
    br

Great replacement - and worth every penny of $82 to avoid and fix this, and because your system will run better.

It is a good idea to insure new memory works by itself; to run Apple Hardware Test (OEM DVD boot with "D" to run Extended Test) once, too. And yes, 4 x 2GB would be better and loss of 1GB won't help enough. Still have room to add 4 x 1GB or more down the road.
You keep the four keys held down through 3 complete restart cycles before you release the keys.
If the system forgets where to boot from, which this will trigger, hold the OPTION key. Also, it should still boot but have to scan for a valid boot drive system.... which is what your problem, in part, sounds like (except for some other issues).
Yes, great on UPS and backups. But it is also "wise" for you or your department, to have some emergency boot drives (FireWire 800 is great) for repairs, maintenance and to make changes - and to rule out the drive is functioning. A bad block sector can ruin everything and cause days of fixing, when having a backup or alternate would be... your own personal "UPS" - redundancy. Some servers have redundant PSU and other components, a "spare tire" if you will.
Finder: Go to Folder (under one of the menus or just use "Command + Shift + G" and type "var/vm" will show you the location of swap files, which is normally a hidden folder. Nice to get to know a couple places where some things are stored. Also, look at Activity Monitor. Leopard seems to have more information on pageouts, VM, and swap files being used.
SmcFanControl is a little background utility that most of us use, that helps especially in summer or with some upgrade cards to keep everything run cooler, like FBDIMM RAM. The default fan rpm is 499-599 while setting it even to 799 will make enough difference to drop the temperature or keep temps below threshold.

Which brings up another - monitoring the temperature of cpu, memory, etc. I use Hardware Monitor, many use iStatPro or Temperature Monitor. All easy to find on MacUpdate while there. All of them don't have any negative side effect - lean and mean and the "less is more" philosophy keeps a system running its smoothest and error free, so normally I avoid installing what I don't need, and avoid the potential for conflicts, but these are fine, been using for 2 yrs, since I got Mac Pro.

  • Mac Pro slow down after Yosemite 10.10.2 upgrade

    Upgraded in January.
I get the spinning color wheel all the time.  Programs crash.
I've run adware medic a few times, and etrecheck.
First run through, adware found Genio.
Since then, it hasn't.  Etrecheck still says it sees it, but Adware doesn't. Still no good.
    I reset SMS and PRAM.
This machine is slow. Previous to the upgrade, this machine was very fast!

  • My mac has slow performance when running two or more applications, ran onyx and cleaned cache but my macbook is still running slow. Recommendations?

I've had my MacBook White running on Mac OSx 10 for about 2 years. My sister has the same type of MacBook and she isn't having any slow performance. I really don't want to install RAM and that can't be the end all be all of solutions. Please help!!

Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility.  For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation.  TechTool Pro 4.5.1 or higher are Intel Mac compatible;  Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided.  Versions 1.5.1 or later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts had been significantly reduced in Tiger and Leopard.  These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc.  Other utilities are also available such as Onyx, Leopard Cache Cleaner, CockTail, and Xupport, for example.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    Backuplist
    Carbon Copy Cloner
    Data Backup
    Deja Vu
    iBackup
    JaBack
    Silver Keeper
    MimMac
    Retrospect
    Super Flexible File Synchronizer
    SuperDuper!
    Synchronize Pro! X
    SyncTwoFolders
    Synk Pro
    Synk Standard
    Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
Additional suggestions will be found in Mac Maintenance Quick Assist.
Referenced software can be found at CNet Downloads or MacUpdate.

  • Mac Pro slow after upgrade to 10.5.5

I got a certified Mac Pro a few month ago. It worked pretty fast in the beginning but then the performance slowed down. I called the Apple support and they just told me to upgrade from 10.5.4 to 10.5.5. But now my Mac is even slower than before; especially start up time takes a while.
Also, when I do "Disk Utility – Repair Disk permission" I get these errors now:
OwnerGroupTool" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "usr/bin/lppasswd" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Group differs on "private/etc/cups", should be 0, group is 26.
    Permissions differ on "private/var/spool/cups/cache/rss", should be drwxr-xr-x , they are drwxrwxr-x .
    Can anyone help?

Hi and thank you very much for all your suggestions!
I'm really not a Mac expert. In my company we always had a technican. Now I'm working from home and need to deal with the technical stuff by myself. So please forgive me my answers below:
    Run Disk Warrior.
OK – I don't have this program but I guess it is worth to buy (?)
Clone your drive with SuperDuper or Disk Utility Restore.
I found Disk Utility Restore. It says to copy a disk, drag the it from the list on the left. Should I drag the HD symbol in the destination field? What does actually happen when I clone my HD?
Never repair permissions booted from an older version,, that includes not using the OS X DVD, it will not set permissions properly.
    OK – thanks
What do you mean by slower. Just startup? how many boot drives are connected? and have you reset startup disk? do you have Windows installed?
Yes starting up is slower, but funily not always. And the general handling in programs. It's not so slow that it would bother me a lot. I just wondered if I could have the performance how it was in the beginning.
    One boot drive; I guess.
No, I haven't reset startup disk. How do I do this?
    No Windows installed
What did you change or install (hardware or software) at the time it slowed down?
    Just the update to 10.5.5
Always keep a backup copy you can boot from before you apply updates so you can go back easily to 10.5.4.
    Thanks – I didn't do this
Make sure you have an alternate boot drive used just for doing maintenance and repairs where you can run Disk Utility, Warrior, TechTool Pro. I would also delete manually the two top level /Library/Caches folders along with extensions.mkext.
Sorry – What exactly is alternate boot drive?
Some messages from Disk Utility can be ignored.
    Are some messages serious?

  • Mac pro slows down after RAM uppgrade ASP (its my workstation)

I have an mac pro (first 8core released back in 2007) and i uppgraded it from 4 to 8 gig of ram. After the upgrade it became slower so I installed snow leopard since it should handle ram and multicores better but that didnt help. Its like it go from sleepy to extreme slow. Like an photoshop image that should take 12 seconds to load took 10min!! So its somethin fishy.
    The old configration
    DIMM Riser A/DIMM 1: 1 GB
    DIMM Riser A/DIMM 2: 1 GB
    DIMM Riser B/DIMM 1: 1 GB
    DIMM Riser B/DIMM 2: 1 GB
    DIMM Riser A/DIMM 3: 0 GB
    DIMM Riser A/DIMM 4: 0 GB
    DIMM Riser B/DIMM 3: 0 GB
    DIMM Riser B/DIMM 4: 0 GB
    The new uppgraded
    DIMM Riser A/DIMM 1: 1 GB
    DIMM Riser A/DIMM 2: 1 GB
    DIMM Riser B/DIMM 1: 1 GB
    DIMM Riser B/DIMM 2: 1 GB

Does 2007 have 4 memory chips as ideal as 2006 had? Can the macstore give me bad compatible rams (i asked for orginal mac ram memmorys). If this could make it go slow. Mabe snow leapord helped out to slow it down but I worked one and half day before I uppgraded to snow leopard and it was already slow.
This is on my worskstation so its Asp. Is there any heros here?
(ok I will test to take out the ram and se if everything goes back to normal but still I would like to get it to work)
    Cheers
    Joel

"need" is something that is "recommended" for symmetrical memory performance.
It shouldn't run any different really.
    I always recommend this:
try with just the new RAM
    put highest density in A1:A2
It is symmetrical, sort of, as 4x1GB in slots 1:2 on both Risers.
My take: doesn't play nice or get along with original 4GB; marginal; and ideal is 4 x 2GB; second best 8 x 1GB. 6 DIMMs is the worst configuration AFTER not having enough.
I'd wipe out your swap files; clone your drive - if you haven't done so in six months you should, also if moving to a new OS, DEFINITELY either
    Clean install on new/2nd drive (great excuse for new fast drive);
Clone and then upgrade (worst scenerio)
Clean install followed by running Migration Assistant for everything except applications.
Don't want to have issues with new OS, new drivers, AND new hardware (even RAM) and a new OS isn't going to fix a problem, just add new ones. And TEST a new OS before you commit yourself (reason for backups and clones and the like).
Also, run Disk Warrior on fresh clone before you use it.
What you do, why, you probably did need more RAM, 4GB is pretty basic and not even enough for pro apps like graphic editing.
Watch RAM temps and run AHT Extended Loop briefly.
I'd watch for bad blocks and disk sectors; re-initialize drives, even install some new ones: WD 10K V-Raptor for system and another for scratch; Samsung 1TB F3 for data.... something like that if it has been 2+ yrs.

  • Mac Pro Slower after adding second hard drive

My work computer is a Mac Pro 3,1 running Lion 10.7.3 with 4GB RAM and a 1TB hard drive. It was performing well running programs like Adobe CS5 and Final Cut Pro until I added a second 1TB drive (Western Digital WD1001FALS). After that upgrade Photoshop is way slower while programs like InDesign and Final Cut are noticable slower.
Is there any reason for this?  Anything that can be done outside of a memory upgrade?

Let me try to direct you to some tips on CS5, and suggest that more hard drives properly used (OS, scratch, data, backup, array) can help, but that one drive and 4GB RAM is under performing.
    Optimize Photoshop CS5
    Optimizing Photoshop Overview
    Adobe Photoshop FAQ
    Optimize performance Photoshop
What are you using the WD1001FALS for? data? scratch?
And open Activity Monitor and check pageouts. Unless your use if very very light, I can't see that as being enough for even CS5 code and some OS X let alone any more apps.

  • MacBook Pro Slow Performance, Difficulty Multitasking

Hello, everyone.  Thanks in advance for any help.
I have a mid-2012 Intel MacBook Pro that is very important to me.  Typically, I'll have a couple of Safari windows, Mail, Evernote, Excel, Word, Calendar, Contacts, and Acrobat running at the same time on 3-4 desktops.  This has been typical of my usage since I bought the computer.
For the last few months, I've noticed that it is having difficulty switching between these tasks.  The gestures to switch the task on the display work fine, but I often get the working ball icon for a significant time before I can continue work in the new application.  This sometimes lasts up to a minute, but is usually 10 seconds or so.  I haven't noticed that a particular application causes this more than any other, and since I first noticed it, I've installed 2 or 3 different OS versions.  I also ran an AHT with no results.
Anyway, since I can't point to anything other than my perception of slower performance, I figured I'd post my EtreCheck results to fish for suggestions.  Does anything below look out of whack?  Any suggestions for changes to improve performance?
    Thanks,
    Jake

  • Mac Pro slow write speed on Samsung SSD drive

    Hi,
I am wondering why I get very slow write speeds on my Samsung SSD 840 Series 250 GB system startup drive in my Mac Pro (early 2008).
I get an average write speed of approx. 35 MB/s and not much more for top speed. I tested it by transfering a large file (8GB, .m4v) from my Mac Pro internal Raid 0 (4x 2TB Stripe Set) delivering up to 550 MB/s. The read speed of the SSD is around 270 MB/s which I consider to be OK for that I have just the 3 Gb/s internal SATA interfaces in my pretty outdated Mac Pro.
I don't see any Memory or CPU overruns or consuming system tasks while doing the tests and no other user programs except Activity Monitor is running. The following screen shots from the Activity Monitor should proove my findings:
    Setup:
Samsung SSD 840 Series 250 GB (SATA 6Gb/s and 3Gb/s compatible) system startup drive. Free Space left on SSD is around 100GB of 250GB.
    Mac Pro (early 2008, Model 3,1), 2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon, 8 GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512 MB.
    OS X Mavericks 10.9.1
Samsung sais there should be 540 MB/s for Seq. Read and 250 MB/s for Seq. Write for their SSD drive.
Any hints what could be done to increase especially that low write speed of around 35 MB/s (average) on the SSD in my Mac Pro?

    Really great 'The hatter' !!!
Thanks a lot for your exceptional support.
Next to my 4x discs in the 4 SATA II drive bays I have installed a additional OWC drive kit that allows me to have another 2 disks sitting in the empty bay below the CD/DVD drive and those are connected to the motherboard. So there is a lot to handle for that controller you mentionned ;-)
I will follow your guidance and boot from my 'maintenance' system on direct attached external drive, install the TRIM Enabler there as well and do the DU repair run. I always have a separate system available that gives me the chance to boot my Mac from there. And in addition I regularly use ONYX to keep my OS X clean and do the maintenance.
Anyway, you're the man of the day!
PS; I am looking forward to finally receive my new Mac Pro (late 2013) ordered on the 18th of December one of these days and then I hope that I can fly ;-)

  • Mac Pro slow vs. iMac?

    Hello:
I have the early 2008 Mac Pro (2.8GHz quad) with 10GB total ram and I am really perplexed because when I went to Frys yesterday to play around with an iMac (2.8GHz core duo) with only 2GB ram, I found that this iMac opened up programs and was so much more speedy than my Mac Pro.
I am really bothered by how fast the iMac seemed compated to my Mac Pro because I though I had a system with superior specifications, but it seems to open up programs much slower than the iMac.
How can I be sure that my Mac Pro is functioning as it should? The 8GB (4 x 2GB) extra ram I bought for it is aftermarket . Do you think that this could be the problem?
    Thanks,
    Derek

More often it is migrating the system or something else. I doubt you could see the 4% difference even if you got the wrong slower memory, and unlikely OWC would do that.

And of course you want the best of drives rather than just original.

  • Mac Pro slow start up

I got a problem with my Mac Pro 4.1, when I turn on the mac the chime sounds after 20 - 30 secs and later on the white or gray screen appears. I had reset the PRAM, changed the coin battery, tested with the "Apple Hardware Test" (no problem at all). I have 20Gb (4X4GB, 4X1GB) of Ram, five hard drives attached to it. I thought that the problem was the hard drive with the OSX (10.8.2), got changed with a new one with a new OSX on it, two hard drives of 2Tb with RAID "lvl 1", two hard drives of 640Gb. When my mac goes to sleep, sometimes when I try to wake it up I hear the sound that wokes up but got no image on display, so I have to force shut down and then turn it on again.
I try dettaching all the hard drives except the one that has the OSX, thought it might be problem of the RAID. I did experiment that my mac freezed and then restart.
Please someone help me with this problem!
    Specs Mac Pro 4.1
    - 2.26ghz x 2 "8 - core"
    - 20gb ram (I recently upgraded my ram from 6Gb)
    - 1Tb HDD
    - 2Tb HDD x 2 (RAID 1)
    - 640Gb HDD x 2
    - NVIDIA GT 120 x 2
    - OSX Mountain Lion 10.8.2
Sorry for my english that is not so good.

Snow Leopard seems to be the most solid OS.
    SSDs can be iffy.
Anyone's RAM can cause or be a problem.
But you said it started before those.
"problem with the hard drive..." is too general and really rare. You would have to have bad sectors or something and not been able to map those out. Any drive can ship that way (not just mapped out at the factory). Zero all from Disk Utilty is not guarantee to resolve those.
Also rare to have a clone not work, SSDs being likely candidate and finiky.

  • Mac Pro slow to connect to internet after waking

Since I upgraded to Lion my mid-2011 2.8 GHz Mac Pro takes about 10-15 seconds to connect to the internet. After waking from sleep in the past, I could launch my web browser and it was connected immediately. It is bad for my email. It is set to check every 2 minutes and I get a huge log of connection errors. I am using the ethernet port with a direct connect to the modem. I also have a wireless router for my MBP and it connects immediately through Airport. Why is my direct connect slower than Wi-Fi?

Sometimes if you set your Ethernet connection to Automatic, rather than specifying the speed you know it will connect at, it will spend several seconds re-negotiating speeds, duplex, flow control, etc with the connected equipment.
For fastest wake times, know what speed it will ultimately settle on, and set that as the speed it should use.
    System preferences > Network > Ethernet > ( Advanced ) > Ethernet ...
set Manually: speed, duplex, and frames size.
