Mac Pro slow to connect to internet after waking

Since I upgraded to Lion my mid-2011 2.8 GHz Mac Pro takes about 10-15 seconds to connect to the internet. After waking from sleep in the past, I could launch my web browser and it was connected immediately. It is bad for my email. It is set to check every 2 minutes and I get a huge log of connection errors. I am using the ethernet port with a direct connect to the modem. I also have a wireless router for my MBP and it connects immediately through Airport. Why is my direct connect slower than Wi-Fi?

Sometimes if you set your Ethernet connection to Automatic, rather than specifying the speed you know it will connect at, it will spend several seconds re-negotiating speeds, duplex, flow control, etc with the connected equipment.
For fastest wake times, know what speed it will ultimately settle on, and set that as the speed it should use.
System preferences > Network > Ethernet > ( Advanced ) > Ethernet ...
set Manually: speed, duplex, and frames size.

  • OS X 10.7.2 very slow to connect to internet after sleep

Following the lates round of updates and firmware updates MacBook Pro Running 10.7.2 is very difficult to connect to internet after sleep. Network diagnostics show all is fine, all the IP's DNS etc WiFi are fine Safari just won't connect. Was fine before updates

I have had this same problem since I updated to lion. I used to connect straight away. Now it takes at least 10sec.
Have noticed a few anoying bugs with lion. The other thing that somtimes happens to me is it crashing when running some programes ( iphoto '08, BBC iplayer desctop etc... ) and also when browsing some sites (quite alot on youtube)
Really hope these are sorted on the next update.

  • Retina MBP 15 slow to connect to wifi after waking?

My new 2012 rMBP 15 is very slow to reconnect to wifi after waking from sleep.  I've read the Apple support pages with no solutions found.  It can take 10 to 45+ seconds for the wifi to lock on to my home wifi network after the computer wakes from sleep.  While my Macbook Air (2010), iPad3 and iPhone 5 all reconnect almost instantly to the same wifi.  Also I've noticed that after the wifi icon in the menu bar shows it's locked on there is an additional delay before actually being able to connect; like reloading tabs in safari or refreshing my Gmail inbox (in it's own tab not 'Mail app').  Any Ideas how to trouble shoot / fix this issue?
Really irritates me that this top of the line computer is slower than my other devices.....

Also SAME PROBLEM here, but also after booting, plus snail speed:

    What are your speed results:
    MY Tests Results are conclusive:
    http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest
I did the Flash 8 Plugin based speed test (though the Sun Java plugin was similar numbers).
    MAC PRO:
On Airport: Download 533 Kbps / Upload 136 Kbps
On Ethernet: Download 6356 Kbps / Upload 524 Kbps

  • My Mac won't stay connected to Internet after Leopard upgrade

Suddenly after upgrading to Leopard, both Safari and Mail report that Mac OS X isn't staying connected to the Internet. I'm using AirPort and a cable modem and it's always been reliable before. But now there seems to be something jumpy/fishy going on in the AirPort menu in Leopard's menu bar. The list of available networks changes very often and although my own network remains checked, Network Diagnostics shows that I am indeed getting disconnected often and for long lengths of time. But everytime I restart my Mac, my Internet connection is restored.
I had fully expected BETTER networking in Leopard, not WORSE.

So sorry, I have not checked back to Discussions til tonight. You have undoubtedly solved your problem. But just in case not...
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107451 is where I learned about Soft and Hard Resetting of the Airport base stations. There is also a Factory reset that's not really on this page.
After I Hard set, I then went into Leopard's new interface for the AirPort Utility. Very straight forward to configure to set your station(s) up again. I've not had a problem since.
Again, soooooo sorry I didn't drop in sooner with this information.

  • WRT54G-CA slow to connect to internet after booting Windows XP

Just bought a WRT54G-CA wireless router to replace my regular wired one. After i boot Windows XP now it takes about 2 minutes before internet explorer and outlook express can access the internet. In fact outlook express won't even load for those 2 minutes. My virus software can check the internet for updates after about 30 seconds so internet connectivity is there at that point.
My old (wired) router did not take this long. Any ideas on what to check/tweak?

Finally solved the issue once i discovered that the problem now occured when hooking the computer directly to the cable modem. It was failing to obtain an IP address during that time period. The event viewer showed this error (1001):
Your computer was not assigned an address from the network (by the DHCP Server) for the Network Card with network address <my address here...>.  The following error occurred:
The semaphore timeout period has expired. . Your computer will continue to try and obtain an address on its own from the network address (DHCP) server.
It was something to do with my network card (a Realtek 8029). I solved the problem by using the motherboard's built in network port instead, but had to physically remove the 8029 before the problem went away. Disabling the network connection and even removing the card in the device manager was not sufficient - the card had to be physically removed from the motherboard even though the network cable was now plugged into the motherboards port.
Very strange tho - the card has always worked flawlessly and this problem only started when i switched my router to the WRT54G... i suspose the timing is a coincidence.

  • IMac (10.10.1) won't connect to internet after waking (sometimes)

I have a new retina display iMac running the current version of Yosemite. I have a problem that has been occurring more often recently.
When I first boot the iMac the internet (direct Ethernet connection to the base station which is directly attached to the cable modem) everything works fine. I'll put the computer to sleep and wake it up the next morning and some days it works normally and other days it refuses to connect to the internet. A check of network preferences shows that it is "connected" and I can see my external IP address. I've tried resetting the SMC and parameter RAM, but that didn't fix it. I've repaired my disk permissions, but that doesn't seem to be it either. Below is a summary (EtreCheck) of my computer.
Suggestions are gratefully accepted and appreciated.

Hi Steven, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
Then... Try putting these numbers in Network>TCP/IP>DNS Servers, for the Interface you connect with...
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
    Then Apply
DNS Servers are a bit like Phone books where you look up a name and it gives you the phone number, in our case, you put in apple.com and it comes back with 17.149.160.49 behind the scenes.
These Servers have been patched to guard against DNS poisoning, and are faster/more reliable than most ISP's DNS Servers.
In 10.5/10.6... System Prederences? choose I
ntercae?Advanced>DNS tab, click + icon and add both.

    Hi
My Macbook Pro 15 inch takes several minutes to be able to connect to the internet after waking from sleep.  Does anyone else have this problem and is there a fix?

The message that comes up when I click on "TomTom Home Install" is "You cannot open Home Install because Power PC applications are no longer supported." Does this mean that the TomTom, which is absolutely vital to my life - well, not literally but you know what I mean - can no longer be used with my MacBook Pro?
What that means is that is can't be used with Lion 10.7.  PowerPC was the chip Apple used up until 2006 when they switched to Intel.  At that point, they created the Rosetta emulator to allow for PPC support for 5 years.  They finally dropped the support with the release of Lion.  It will only work with OS X 10.6 or earlier.  The other option is to purchase a new GPS, which can be had for $100 for a decent one.

I have a brand new Macbook PRO with the latest OS and the latest EFI. I haven't installed any 3'rd party products except Moneywell for my private finances. After a couple of days it couldn't connect to internet after sleep. I run the network diag and it says the connection is OK. Log out/in doesn't help. I have to reboot everytime it wakes up after sleep. Any clue?
    br,
    DAVID

I am having the exact same problem.  It started with 10.7, was fixed with 10.7.1, then came back again with 10.7.2.

  • Problem connecting to internet after NEW 27" iMac makes up from sleep

Ok, I have a brand new 27” iMac and when it connects to the internet after waking up from sleep mode doesn't have any download speed.. See image
This only happen when it wakes up and the only way to fix it is to restart the computer. I have tried turning on and off the airport as well as messing around with other settings and nothing seams to fix it.
I am using an Apple Airport Extreme with a Comcasts 20mb connection.
This is the only computer in the house that has this problem (3 other MacBook Pros) And while the iMac is registering no download speed, the other computer are cranking out at over 20mbps.
The fix for now has been turning off the power saving setting to allow sleep. so no sleep=internet.
Any one having this problem? I don’t really want to lug it back to the apple store but I will if I have to.

Change your router channel.  Sometimes this all you will have to do.
I don’t really want to lug it back to the apple store but I will if I have to.
You don't have to.  Call Apple tech support.  They can give you instructions over the phone if the issue is just software.  You will have to bring it in if tech support suspects you have a hardware issue as they need to run diagnostic testing.

  • Mac Pro won't connect to Ethernet

My Mac Pro will not connect to the internet, but it connects to Wifi via my comcast modem.
the modem was switched out today, but I couldn't connect before that - which is why they came and replaced my modem.
The lights in the Diagnostics window say:
    Ethernet: connected
    Wifi: connected
    ISP: Fail
    Internet: Fail
    Server: Fail
    Any ideas?

Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
Note: You need an always-on Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to the Internet to use Recovery. It won’t work with USB or PPPoE modems, or with proxy servers, or with networks that require a certificate for authentication.
From the OS X Utilities screen, select Get Help Online. A clean copy of Safari will launch. No plugins, such as Flash, will be available. While in Recovery, you'll have no access to your saved bookmarks or passwords, so make a note of those before you begin, if they're needed for the test.
Test. After testing, reboot as usual and post the results.

  • Why is my Mac pro slow to Open folders in a Windows SMB share?

Why is my Mac pro slow to Open folders in a Windows SMB share?   We use a Windows Server for graphics storage and I can open the share just fine, but when I attempt to open folders within that share it takes sometimes as long at 15 minutes to display the contents of the folders.  This happend before and I switched to the other NIC port, but now it is doing it in both.  I can open other connections to Windows SMB shares with no problem.

  • My Mac Pro won't connect to Wifi?

My Mac Pro won't connect to the Wifi that it has been for the past 2+ years. All other devices in our home that use the same Wifi are working just fine.

Tried doing Network Diagnostics multiple times, did not work. Keeps saying it can't connect or times out.
What color was the light pertaining to Wifi in the left column?  Red, Green, or Yellowish/Orange?
Some of the following you may have already tried:
    Try the basics first:
Change your router channel number.  Most times this works & is all you have to do.
Disconnect & reconnect your modem.  unplug it for about 10 seconds.  Plug it back in.  Do the same for Apple’s routers.  Wait for everything to reboot.
    System Preferences>Network
    Click the Assist Me button.
In the next window that pops up, click the Diagnostic button & do the necessary.

    Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
Another thing to try - Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.
