Mac Pro Sluggish - what is it?

Hi
I have a Mac Pro and a Mac Book.
The Mac Pro is 5 months old. The Mac Book is about 3 months old. The Mac Pro is crashing constantly and the Mac Book is perfect.
Issues with the Mac Pro:
1. Firefox can't hack it any more.Keeps 'unexpectedly quitting.
2. Everything is slower than my MAc Book.
3.Bootcamp refuses to create the Windows partition(worked beautifully on the Mac Book)
4. All my movie DVD's are burning with 'staggering' in the playback.
5. The spinning beechball of doom is always around.
6. External Lacie fire wire hard drives keep falling off (device removal)
2 GB Ram
3 Bays - 400 GB Each
Can anyone help?
SH

Corrupt preferences; LaCie; maybe disk drives that aren't compatible? FBDIMM errors.... marginal RAM. Corrupt cache files.
Firefox has gotten "iffy" lately since 10.4.9 so I stopped and just use OmniWeb.
Zero your drives and insure that they are in fact GUID partitions.
Do a full erase and clean install.

Holding down the control key will invoke "right-click."
Depending on the View, holding down Shift will with either toggle the selection (Icon View), or it will make a continuous selection from the previous selection (List View or Column View).
The only way to make a continuous selection in Icon View is to drag out a selection marquee around or through the icons.
I can't remember the behavior of previous OS's.

  • Mac Pro: sluggish... what's wrong?

I've got a three months old Mac Pro (Dual-Core Intel Xeon, 3 GHz, 4 GB RAM, OS X 10.4.11) and use it mainly for Adobe CS3 (InDesign, Photoshop). Before this I had a G5. I found that G5 a lot more pleasant to work with and that suprises me a LOT...! I (of course) expected a fast and swift reacting system!
The MacPro seems to have trown me back in time to those old days when the Mac OS didn't do well with memory management: after some time the computer gets slower as if memory if filled and stays filled. If things go really bad the interface of IDesign for instance, takes seconds to build up, one palet at a time. When I want to print something for the first time in any program, it takes about 6 seconds before the dialogue is there. Moving thins in InDesign becomes more and more sluggish, as if there is lag. I have to restart the computer to be able to work normal. For a while...
I really have the idea there is something wrong with my system! Strange thing is, that my colleague has the same problems...! Now both our computers were installed using an image. Maybe that doesn't work right? Is there a known problem that makes a MacPro work slow and sluggish?

I understand your frustration. Can you supply us with a little more information? When things really slow down, check the Activity Monitor and post your Page ins/Page outs (under System Memory Tab.)
I primarily use CS3 (all apps) with my Pros, my 2.66 also has 4GB RAM My 3.0 8-core has 8. Both machines in a professional environment and are extremely fast compared to the G5.
InDesign takes a little time to start up but everything else, speedwise, is 'normal' (as fast as I am.)
Did you migrate your CS3 apps from your G5 with the Migration Assistant? If you did, that would be your primary culprit.
    Let us know...
    D.
P.S. I just noticed you installed with a disk image. That is more than likely your problem, especially if the disk image was created from a PPC machine. Try re-installing CS3 following the un-install/install procedure that Adobe has posted on their website.

  • HT1338 cinema Display 30" no longer recognized by my mac pro? What can I do? It worked fine until now.

Cinema display 30" no longer recognized by my mac pro. Until now it worked without problems, then after a crash it fails to recognize the display.
Now it runs in a far lower resolution. What can I do?
I tried to get da driver for it, but could not find any.

Try the other DVI port on the graphics card.  On early Mac Pros, only one port is the dual-link DVI needed for full resolution on the 30" display.  Make sure the display's USB cable is plugged into the computer.

Would you care to tell us which version of Mac Pro, and which version of OS X, you are running?  (It's not always safe to assume that a User is running Lion just because he posted in the Lion Forum.)

  • I need lots of USB ports with New Mac Pro, now what?

because I'm in the audio business I needs lot of USB ports with my Mac Pro. On my current 2008 machine, that's not really an issue, with 5 ports on teh MP itself and I installed some USB hubs over PCIe that give me a total of 13 port. I'm not really sure what is the best way to get that amount on the new MP.
Oh, and I really like the stability of my current set up. Before I went with an external USB Hub that always gave me headaches with ports not being recognized.

The only two things I found so far are:
a/ going back to the external USB hubs, which I find very frustrating to work with, because instable with connection and I would need to add some interface to go from USB to TB (which are also rather expensive at the moment)
b/ use some external PCIe enclosures that are really expensive.
So I havent really found the right solution for my situation. Which makes me hesitant to migrate to new MP at the moment.

  • 2 questions: validity of my machine's status as a 3.1 Mac Pro, and what PCIE cables for Radeon 4870?

Hello, I bought a used mac pro from a guy that said it was a 3.1.  It runs great and when I go to "About this Mac" and then to "More info" and look at the hardware info, it says that it is indeed a 3,1.  However, the serial number sticker on the back says it's a 2.8!  Any insights into that?  I'm very new to Mac Pro desktops and I just want to make sure I didn't get ripped off.
My second question.  The machine came with the standard X2 quad 2.88 GHz processor, 8gb of Ram, and a Radeon 2200 graphics card.  I bought an ATI Radeon HD 4870 from a guy on craigslist but he didn't have the power cables for it.  He said it wasn't a big deal and after I did some research it looks like I need some PCIE power connectors.  The card takes two, 6 pin power cables.  My question is where do I plug them in on the logic board?  Should it be a 6 pin plug in also meaning I want a 6pin to 6pin cable like this (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812200975&nm_mc=KNC-Google Adwords&cm_mmc=KNC-GoogleAdwords-_-pla-_-Internal+Power+Cables-_-N82E16812200975 &gclid=CMW8u4Po5LUCFcdDMgodx2AAyA).
So yeah, the simplest answer I'm looking for is what cables do i need to power my ATI Radeon 4870 in my Mac Pro?  Another way to answer that I guess would be to explain to me the way my power supply works in my mac pro.
    Thanks!
    Mickey

That is an 8-pin. And I just posted Amazon link to 6-pin in another graphic card upgrade thread minutes ago.
And  it had a ATI 2600XT. good thing you replaced it.
10.6.8  tends to run best but try - andkeep 10.8.x and see  how it goes. Also more options later in graphic cards.
Call Apple and have them check  the serial number and they can provide for small $20?fee the OEM  DVDs it shipped with (10.5.x) and  Apple Hardware Test. They can  also sell 10.6.3 DVD
I would have looked for the ATI 5770, better support, the 4870 lacks some ML (Mountain Lion) support for OpenCL.

  • 2 displays for Mac Pro. What do you recommend? What do I need?

I have an older Mac Pro (2007ish - Model Identifier: MacPro1,1) with a NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT graphics card. I currently use an old Apple 22" Cinema Display (1 generation - clear plastic style). Anyway, I want to upgrade my display and switch to a dual monitor setup. So I'm looking for two displays in the 22-24" range. I have some questions about what & how.
First, will my graphics card support two displays? If not, what do I need instead?
Second, what displays do you all recommend? (I'm a graphic & web designer) My budget would be in the range of about $1000 per display.
Lastly, I was really hoping to hold out for the new Apple displays but Apple doesn't seem to be moving very fast in that arena. I've actually been waiting a long time for the upgrade and now the whole mini-display port thing has me wondering what to do.

I'd look at replacing the 7300GT, either ATI 4870 or.... ? before the 7300 bites the dust, and because Apple/ATI driver support for OpenGL and upcoming technology (the 7300GT w/ 256MB is also down bottom rung of ladder).

  • Motion 4 is slooooooow on my Mac Pro. What am I missing?

I haven't used Motion since PPC days and I recently got FCS with the newest version and thought I would give it a whirl.
It's... slow. And it slows my entire computer down to a crawl on occasion.
    Here are my specs:
    Mac Pro
    2.66 GHz
    6 GB Memory
    ATI RadeonX1900
    NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT
    OS 10.6.1
    Any recommendations?
    Thanks guys and gals!
    -Stephen

    Hi,
if you don't have 3 monitors connected, I would rather suggest to keep the ATI X1900XT card and move out the Nvidia card. The ATI card card in most of the tests, usually works faster in Motion than Nvidia (from my experience)
But the best way - check both possibilities: with Nvidia or with ATI and lets us know.

  • I cannot use the FS-4000DN printer with my mac pro.  What driver do I need?

I have a refurbished Mac Book Pro with OS X 10.8.5 and cannot find a driver for the Ecosys FS-4000DN Printer.  Says my mac book is incompatible.  I realize this may not be a mac problem but one with the printer co.  Any ideas?

  • What monitor best works with the MAC Pro

I'm thinking of buying a MAC PRO. What Monitor best works with a MAC Pro?

Whatever Monitor you like, exclusively. There are adapters available for everything.
Analog VGA is not a good idea. It's a Digital world. But it can be done if you want.
A TV set is not a Monitor. TV sets are for moving pictures, and may do badly with stable pictures, fine lines, parallel lines, smooth-edged text, and adjacent patches of bright colors.
Wider than 1920 needs special attention to details.

  • Upgraded to Mac Pro- What should I change in FCP to use all 8 cores?

    Hi
I went from a G5 to a new Mac Pro. What settings should I change to make sure I can take advantage of the speed from the 8 cores and 6 gigs of Ram and new Nvidia graphics card?
    Thanks

There's little to do on that front. FCP will use what it can all by itself. Might look into a virtual cluster though for Compressor. Use the QMaster control panel to set this up... read on it here: http://www.macworld.com/article/49047/2006/01/marcchreateside.html
