Mac Pro spinning beachball solution

I was about to submit my problem when I just stumbled onto the solution and thought this might help someone else. I recently upgraded from a 2006 Mac Pro to an Early 2009 Mac Pro. I removed my 750 GB HD with 10.7.5 installed from the orig Mac Pro and installed it into the 2009 Mac Pro and booted up. I got to the login screen and immediately I started seeing delays and spinning beachballs that lasted approx 30 seconds and occured every 10 seconds, and I could hear the hard drive suddenly go quiet as soon as the beachball appeared and then it would start chattering again when the beachball "let go". I tried a booting from another hard drive and the computer worked just fine, so I removed my 750 GB boot drive and noticed that the drive was jumpered to limit it to 1.5 GBPs, so I removed the jumper and oila, computer was working fine! I verified the 3GBPs status in System Information and made sure all of my hard drives were set to 3 GBPs. Hope this helps!

Hey hatter. I didn't put the jumper on the drive, I didn't even know ithe jumper was installed until I took a good look at it after I put it in my new Mac Pro and started having problems. Must have come that way from Tiger Direct. The strange thing is, why did it work fine with my orig Mac Pro?

  • Late 2008 Macbook Pro - Spinning Beachball - Why?

Over the last few months I've noticed a rapid decline in the performance of my macbook pro. I've used it to produce music on it without issues so it should still be quite a capable machine. At first I thought it might be my new WD 750Gb scorpio black hard drive but I've since reverted back to my original factory hard drive and the problem is the same. I have been using CCC rather than doing a fresh install so I don't know whether doing a fresh install will help. When I first started out I have leopard - is Lion or Mountain Lion (which I currently run) more processor intensive? I get this spinning beachball often when I'm not doing anything particularly heavy on the cpu. When opening apps and sometimes they don't respond and when I click launchpad sometimes the icons are blank until it has time to visually update them. Ableton often takes up to 5 mins to open but its usually about a minute or so these days. I've reparied all permissions, verified hard drives, reset my PRAM & SMC and tried 2 different hard drives. The battery is on 'replace now' and I notice it may be swollen as sometimes it intereferes with my trackpad functioning (clicking). My 250GB hard drive has about 40gb free on it too as I tried deleting things to free it up. The decline of the battery may coincide with the decline in performance but I can't say for sure if they are related.
I know my laptop is old now but it was working prefectly not that long ago. Is there any kind of log or screenshot I could post to give you more information to help?

My 250GB hard drive has about 40gb free
Empty the trash in the Dock as well as iPhoto’s trash!
Open up your application folder & go through all your apps.  Trash all the apps you no longer want and/or use.
An easier way to do this is to open the Application folder in list view & press the Command+j keys.
In the the dialog that appears, click the "This Window Only" button & the "Calculate All Sizes" check box.
Wait a bit until your file & folder sizes have all been calculated, then click the "Size" column to sort your apps from the fattest to the most anorexic.
Get rid of all your photo files you don't want and/or need.  Same goes for those pics off the websites you downloaded (gifs, jpegs, etc.).  Or transfer/move them all to a photo/movie storage site like ImageShack and Photobucket, 2 of the most popular  FREE  storage sites.
Get rid of all your video & music files you no longer view and/or listen too.  Especially, if you already have the actual CD/DVDs or you can later redownload from a website.  Or transfer them all to a FREE video/movies and/or music storage site.
Use Spotlight to make sure you got rid of everything.  You can even trash directly from Spotlight!  Better yet, download this FREE software called Find File.  This app puts Spotlight to shame (works w/Mountain Lion).
Drag what you don't want and/or need to the trash.  Better yet, download this neat little shareware app *demo* called AppZapper.  It basically does all the work for you by not only trashing the apps but the apps preference files, caches & all its associated files.
Another software that does the above is AppDelete.  Best of all this software is free!
Burn what you want and/or need onto CDs or DVDs. Not everyone has the  luxury of purchasing an external HD and/or the system requirements for iCloud to store their "stuff.”
Dropbox is a free storage utility to check out.
You can check with your ISP to see if they offer *free* storage space.  Most if not all do now-a-days.   There are thousands if not millions of *free* storage facilities on the web also.  Use your favorite search engine to search them out as they come in different storage sizes to fit your needs & wants.
    Check for duplicate fonts.
    Applications>Font Book
    Select “All Fonts”
If you see any “black dots” next to any fonts this mean you have duplicates and/or multiple versions of these fonts.
    To clean this up, select a “black dotted” font or the Apple + *click* to select multiple dotted fonts;
    Edit>Resolve>Duplicates.
What the above does is turns off the duplicates & multiple version fonts.  Not delete them.
More than likely the “extras” were installed by other programs and/or other users.
    Clear out font caches
Use FontNuke.  It does all the work for you.  And, best of all it’s *FREE*.
    Printer Drivers
Get rid of all the printer drivers you don’t need & use except the ones for your *current* printer(s)/scanner(s).
    HD>Library>Printers Folder
If you accidently threw something out that you needed for your printer/scanner it can be easily obtained from the manufacturer’s website and/or from the CD that came w/the printer/scanner.
    Garage Band
Has about 1GB of loops stored.  Get rid of some some them.  You surely don’t use, like and/or need them all.
    HD>Library>Audio/Apple Loops>Apple>Apple Loops For GarageBand
Or just get rid of the Garage Band app altogether if you don’t use it.
    Get rid of extra languages
Strip your computer down to your “native” tongue.
You can do this with a *FREE* utility called Monolingual.  Another app that apparently does all the work for you.  I’ve never used it.  However, a lot of users here swear by & recommend it highly.
However, there is a warning for *native English speakers*. Make sure you keep BOTH English and English (United States).

    Slimming your hard drive
Rule of thumb: You should never let your hard drive get to where you have only 10-15% of space left.

The battery is on 'replace now' and I notice it may be swollen as sometimes it intereferes with my trackpad functioning (clicking).
You should not be using your computer until the battery is replaced.  If it is indeed swollen and/or leaking, it will cause serious internal damage.
    Have you tried the following?
    Mountain Lion Recovery
Boot up from your computer by holding down the command+r keys.  This will take you to the recovery drive.
Select Disk Utility & hit Return.
In Disk Utility select the HD on the left & click on Repair Disk (bottom right).

  • MacBook Pro - Spinning Beachball

    Hi all,
My macbook pro is having serious problems.
The original hard disk died a view weeks back, this was confirmed by the apple store in Seattle.
When i returned to the UK i bought a WD Scorpio Blue 500GB drive and paid to have it installed and have my old documents rescued onto it.
With this new HD in i am continuously getting the spinning beachball. It is not restricted to certain apps. I just get it all the time.
It happens if i double click on a folder in the finder. if i click an app on the dock, if i open system preferences, anything basically.
    tried all the usual:
    disk permissions
    disk first aid
    reset pram
i have now done a fresh install of 10.6 and not installed any other apps and guess what, it is still doing it.
I have been using macs for years and normally sort out any problems that i have had.
Do you reckon it is possibly a dodgy HD that has been installed?
MacBook Pro - Intel Mobile Core 2 Duo 2.8 GHz -  4GB Ram.

i am now running disk warrior and am getting the "speed reduced by disk malfunction" notice whilst rebuilding the directory.
i'm guessing that means the drive is faulty.

  • Mountain Lion on mid-2009 MacBook Pro spinning beachball is becoming frequent

I have a mid 2009 MacBook Pro 2.53 GHZ 4 GB ram and more and more I am getting the spinning beachball. When verifying permissions it says Est time 1 minute for close to 5 minutes, My TM drive won't repair.  The machine is just much slower. I have a new hard drive and I replaced the battery because it was giving me a battery error. Is this all the result of running Mountain Lion? I have had it for several months and it just seems to be getting worse.

Surprised there hasn't been anyone else experiencing this issue.
    I have seen this on 2 new MBP 2.3mhz i5's with the Intel HD 3000 384mb graphics, Lion 10.7.3 & 10.7.4.
Also with the latest Lion firmware for the late 2011 MBP's that addresses compatibility and stability issues.
Hopefully there is a fix soon because the painting on my locked screen to login is getting annoying

  • New Mac Pro Firewire 400 solution !

I was surprised to see that my NEW Mac Pro (2009) does NOT have even a single FW 400 port. Everything is FW800. That doesn't help with my legacy camera and hard drive.
Another surprise is that Apple doesn't sell any kind of solution, (Except a 6 foot long cable) for this problem.
But, I have found this adapter available through Amazon:
    http://www.sonnettech.com/product/fw_adapter.html
If Amazon can sell this adapter, why can't Apple?
    Cheers.
    Ron

I picked that one up as well to plug my cinema display into. I wondered at first if it would cause any issues, but other then seeming to fit a little loose, it is okay so far.
I also heard another option (if available) is to plug the firewire into the back of an external drive. I don't know if this would be better or not.

  • Macbook pro spinning beachball crash

I desperately need some help - I have tried searching the problem, but I don't really know what I'm talking about, so don't know what to look for.
Recently my (kinda old now) macbook pro has started hanging on some simple tasks. The last crash involved attempting to save a picture from a website. The beachball will spin, then keep spinning. I can still move the mouse, but then that freezes and the ball keeps spinning. I have either pressed and held the power button to restart, or closed the lid. When I reopen the lid after a while, the mac has restarted itself. A crsah report then generates.
I recently swapped the optical drive for a second hard drive. I am not sure if this has anything to do with the problem. The primary harddrive is an SSD.
    Below is the crash report.

  • Macbook pro, spinning beachball, never ending

Hello community, i have recently started having problems with my macbook pro. Currently on my roommates computer because mine will not start. I have restarted the system multiple times and even tried to start the system in safe boot. Currently it is sitting on the loading page "with the apple logo". its been loading for about 10 minutes now.......HELP!
    Capacity- 299 GB
    Available- 208.37 GB
    used- 90.63 GB

You might find some help in this comprehensive document:

    Ciao.

  • 5.1 on Mac Pro? (suggestions please)

Anyone have any suggestions on gear to monitor in 5.1 with logic and a Mac Pro?

this solution would be extremely inflexible...
    http://www.simplifidigital.com/shopsimplifi/amplifiers-adat-input-amplifiers-c-2 _7.html?zenid=e48b8c6e6f346f86f7b2826e323888aa
but if you have the ability to make the ADAT outputs post-5.1-fader, you can use the above amp which has a simple ADAT input.
otherwise the cheapest method would probably to get an ADAT to analog converter (alesis AI-3 or other interface tasked just for this conversion... or maybe you need a new interface with more I/O) and then run the analog outputs into a 5.1 or 7.1 direct input on a consumer receiver (some of the real cheap ones don't have direct analog inputs), which in theory would bypass any bass management on the receiver, it would simply be used for volume control.

  • How to get a 2006/2007 Mac Pro on Wi-Fi

I have a 2006 Mac Pro. I didn't buy an Airport Extreme card with it when I first got it. I recently moved house, and now my Mac Pro is 2 floors up from where my router is. Laying an ethernet cable is not an option, so now I really need to get my Mac Pro on to my wi-fi network. The people inside the Apple Store in Regent street in London don't seem to have a clue on how I can do this. They advised me that I should go to an apple reseller, and get them to help me. The resellers have all told me to visit the Apple store instead.
I take it I can't just install any PCI-Express wifi card on my Mac Pro. One solution that was recommended to me is to install a powerline adaptor, so that I can receive the signal through the power sockets. This is an extremely expensive solution though (£130), and I'm not prepared to pay anywhere near that.
    Help!

I am not sure that card is the proper one or not since it doesn't seem to list a model number or which model mac pro it is for.
I did a little research and I think the apple model number on the card you want is 661-4060.  For example, look here and here.  They don't exactly specify mac pro year either but some o fthe other dates are around the same time (2006).
So maybe doing a google search for 661-4060 will confirm what you found or give you other sources for it.  At the very least it will give you some places to contact to ensure that is the proper part number and if not they would probably be able to tell you what the part number is.

  • Mac pro 2012 12-core RAM questions

    Hello Everyone,
I am in the market for 48 or 64 gigs of ram for my mac pro. the cheapest solution that i have found is this: http://www.amazon.com/Corsair-1333MHz-240-Pin-Single-CMX8GX3M1A1333C9/dp/B006XB5 6VI/ref=sr_1_14?ie=UTF8&qid=1349058965&sr=8-14&keywords=PC3-10600E%2C+1333+MHz%2 C+DDR3+desktop+memory (i will buy 8 of these sticks)
However my only concern with that ram is that its not registered ecc ram.. is that going to be an issue for me? Will i still be able to assign 3 gigs per CPU for adobe after effects?
What are the drawback of this ram? or will this work just fine?
    Thank in advance!

I think this thread says it all:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1455934
you don't and can't 'assign' anything to any cpu. You can populate the daughter board and you can innsure you have enough. And now with 10.8.2 seems you can have "too much" as it broke support for more than 64GB.

  • Mac Pro Beachball issue...

I have a Mac Pro 3.33ghz 6-core with 12GB ram. Also have 4 WD 2TB Black Caviar drives (1 in each bay slot). But I have had only one problem with this computer since the very beginning of getting it. Even when I had only bay 1 filled with the Hitachi 2TB HD that came with the Mac Pro, I would notice that maybe about 1/3rd of the time I would turn the computer on, it would power up, allow me to sign in to my account name and once I got to the desktop, it would either be sluggish to load and the beachball would appear and keep spinning (and I would have to hold the power button to restart) - OR - the desktop would fully load and be ready to go, but when I clicked on the finder and brought up the finder window which lists my drives and home folder, etc - if I clicked on any of the other HD`s in the list, it would again pop up the beachball for maybe 2 minutes and then it would show me the folders found in the finder window for the HD selected.
Apple was having me run disk utility to repair permissions, which would work for maybe first 3 start-ups but then back to same problem. I ended up adding the other HD`s and switching the HD that came with the Mac Pro to a WD Black Caviar thinking it would solve the problem, perhaps. But it still does it.
Again, it`s not every time. But I feel between 30-50% is an awful lot of time for this computer to behave so strange. And keep in mind this is just when the computer powers on, so it`s not like I am running every 5 Adobe programs simultaneously and expecting the computer to run lightning fast. It is just upon power up that it happens, when nothing else is running at all. I have even installed Applejack to clear out the caches from time to time, and again - it seems to solve the problem, but more like putting a bandaid on it - not a true fix.
I have no clue what the problem could be. I am in Japan and unfortunately their solution for everything is to send the computer back and off no replacement or temp computer while they keep it for 10 days or more. I know it is NOT the hard drives because I have had great luck with these drives in the past and present. But somewhere within my Mac Pro something is making it sluggish either during startup or upon wanting to check folders in my HD`s thru the finder window.
Any ideas? And as for maybe the hard drives - all 4 are 2tb size, and all currently have about 1.5 - 1.7 tb empty space left. So it`s not that, either. And I think the amount of ram I have is plenty for what I do - MS Office, email, iTunes and photo work (itunes and photo storage on the drives).
I am totally confused why this is. Computer is not even 6 months old.

I had the same issue with the periodic beach ball. Lots of ram and 4 7200 rpm 2TB Seagates. It drove me nuts. I tried Kappy's approach which is the correct one with limited success.
Because I am a tinkerer and wanted speed/redundancy, first I tried using software raid 0 on two of the drives. That cured most of the beachballs. So, I liked the raid 0 but was scared of the software raid and data loss.
Then I added a Caldigit Raid Card in Raid 5. The machine is like lighting now and safer. No beachballs and lighting fast. Somehow the disk combo/controller appears to have been slowing me down. I have no idea why, but that's what did it for me.
Unfortunately you cannot move this card to 2009 or later MP's unless you use external raid. It will only do internal on 2008's. This is a very expensive solution but it worked for me. Since I can't even contemplate replacing this machine since it is so quick, the raid setup cost is partially offset by the number of more years I can keep my mac pro.
If you have the nerve to try raid 0 and keep good backups, that may work for you too.

  • I have an early 2008 Mac Pro, which has re-booting problems. Also what does the spinning beach-ball indicate?

Hi, I have an early 2008 Mac Pro which has re-booting problems.
    Processor speed is: 2.8
    Memory: 2GB 800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
    2 x 28GHz Quad Core Intel Xeon
I am running OSX Yosemite Version 10.10
My Mac Pro keeps re-booting. Last year I had to replace my graphics card. My original card was the ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 255MB, and that is what I have now. At this precise moment my Mac Pro is running perfectly, except that it is slow and the spinning beach-ball keeps appearing. I have managed to do some work with the disk utilities, verifying, cleaning and partitioning. Some errors were found and when it was cleaned this seemed to help my Mac Pro to function properly. Although I am able to use my Mac Pro now, from day to day I still experience re-boot problems. Also quite unexpectedly my mac dictionary has an error, it closed itself down and will not open at all, I had the message to say that a report will be sent to Apple.
I have tried starting my computer with an external hard drive fitted via a USB cable, I use for back-ups. This worked and I was able to wipe my hard drive clear and replace all info from the back up I had done only a few days ago.
This worked for a few days and then the same problem started again.
I am beginning to wonder if I need to buy a new hard drive.
If there is anyone who has some answers to help me solve my problem, I would be most grateful.
    Robert

When you have the beachball activity, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • Mac pro too slow to use, spinning ball, no finder response, only hard power off, installing system stalls at 18 minutes left.

mac pro too slow to use, spinning ball, no finder response, only hard power off, installing system stalls at 18 minutes left.
It is taking an hour to power up and mac apple logo appear onscreen. No finder controls or "clicks" are being recognized. Spinning beachball all the time.
Using hard power off and holding the mouse down, I was able to open the optical drive and then restart with "c" and ask the dvd to reinstall the system, but it has stalled before finishing the installation.
This happened about 4 days ago, first it started responding slowly, and then it just keeps spinning the beachball. I can't find hardware test. I did run etrecheck, it did not have any error messages, but I can't copy or move the data anywhere.... I am not able to access the mac pro with another machine, and now I am stuck in install freeze, so I can't copy etrecheck by hand onto a piece of paper.
Without being able to finish a reinstall, what can I try?
After it got bad, and before it got REALLY bad, I managed to repair permissions, but it took a long time. Most of a day. When I restarted from that, things were only worse.
Mac Pro 1,1 , 11 GB ram, 7300, 5TB hard drives, OS 10.6.8,  the drive containing the system folder is/was 700 used, 290 free. While I could get commands to respond, I put Activity monitor on the desktop and watched it.  System memory was 3.31 GB used, about 7 free, and some wired. No app was using a huge amount.
what should I try next? I put a bid on a new/old machine so that I could move the 4 hard drives over.

Thank you for all your suggestions. Please correct me as I articulate this.
I have three versions( 5, 6, CC) of the Adobe Master Collection which I keep active for different clients. I have final cut and motion. I have Office 365. I have a collection of graphic apps that are individually not too big but in all, my app folder is 65GB and my bootcamp partition is 61GB. I can't fit all this on 120 ssd and a 256 will be full once I install, correct? drives should be half open?
Somehow I did not make it clear enough that I was trying to copy onto a 2TB drive I had just initiallized in order to try and save files from my startup drive. I don't use time machine. I take a day or a few days worth of documents and physically move them to another drive at night.  If a series is finished I make two dvd's as well. The second black drive that was failing was the drive I moved my backup documents onto. At no point was I trying to backup onto the failing drives. I was trying to copy off both of them onto the other two drives, a third aux backup that has been there for a while, and a newish 2 TB which I designated as the startup drive when all this trouble started.
I wondered if there were any good techniques for trying to get the data off the failing drive. Thanks for the suggestion of Data Rescue 3. I don't have it yet, but I will try it as soon as I get it. I was never trying to repair in place.
I am very interested in getting a pci bracket and an ssd, but I may wait until I can afford the larger one. If I get an older bracket that is compatible with my old mac pro 1,1  ,  I'd like to be able to move it to a mac pro 3,1 if I get one. Will the larger ssd drives be compatible with the sata in a pci bracket that can work in my mac pro 1,1 ? sata 2 versus something else? If 240 or 256 is my size limit, how much more than my 65 and 61 GB partitions can I put on there? How much of a scratch disc can I make if I leave another 39 GB of headroom on my bootcamp partition? I'm filling 165 GB without making any allowance for temp files.
You have said that 120 is enough for any system. I think I must be misunderstanding something. Are you saying that assuming that most people run office and photoshop and maybe lightroom?
I have and use 4 HDD in this machine, mostly for document storage in two places.
I took out all but the group of 2GB ram chips I bought a year and a half ago. The old ram had passed the hardware test the last time I had access to the hardware test. Two black drives failed, one was a year old and one was a year and a half old, and that it may have been exacerbated by the heat wave. I don't know why the video and the monitor were affected save that the startup drive was failing. I am trying to replace the card.
With all this said, I am also looking at a used mac pro 3,1 with a better video card since a newer machine will likley be compatible through another OS upgrade. If a machine costs only a little more than a new card, it might be a better way to go.
I don't have any sources that offer an ssd for 100. ( of a size that is useful)
How large is your application folder?

  • Solution to another Mac Pro sleep failure

I recently developed problems with my 2008 Mac Pro (3,1) failing to enter sleep modes. Attached displays no longer went to sleep, and hard disks would not spin down. After many hours of investigating this, I found that the Nalpeiron Protec6 software was the culprit. Never heard of it you say? Well I had not either. It is installed surreptitiously by a variety of software vendors as an anti-piracy mechanism. In my case it was installed by Nik Software's Viveza 2 installer; currently this installer does not tell you that they are installing another 3rd party application.
The Nalpeiron Protec6 software is installed in /Library/StartupItems/Protec6 folder. You can tell if the daemon software is running by typing ps ax | grep 'nalpeiron' in Terminal.app.
Renaming, changing load order, etc., didn't help. Viveza 2 won't run without it. So for now, goodbye Viveza and goodbye Protec6. Nuking the Protec6 folder and a quick restart seems to be all that's needed to rid your system of this garbage. Hope this is helpful

This problem is not just with Nik, but also onOne software. They both use Protec6 for their licensing and people have been experiencing these issues with either or (or both).
I have two solutions for you. Both come from the comments in this post:
    http://trick77.com/2010/08/08/mac-doesnt-auto-sleep-anymore-hard-disks/
Solution 1: Some guy wrote an Applescript program that starts and stops the Protec6 service from running. So you can start it when you need it and then stop it so your computer can sleep. He has instructions and a download to the program in those comments.
Solution 2: Based on what someone says later in these comments, the newer update to Plug In Suite and Phototools fix this issue. Presumably bundled with a newer, bug free Protec6. I haven't tested this, but I bet if you install a demo version of the Plug In Suite or Phototools it will overwrite your Protec6 folder with the newer one and then Viveza will work as well and your computer will sleep again.

  • I've got a mac pro problem with the starting up, but also a red light on the logic board solidly on. Its not among the diagnostic led. It's located near the BT adapter and the front fans. Also the fans run loud also. any solutions?

    Hi
I've got a mac pro late 2006, and i am having problem with it for quite a while now. the problem i am facing is the start up process, and the red light on the logic board. Earlier I've got the two led on the diagnostic leds 5 and 6 turned on without the diagnostic button being pressed, and i think those are related to the processors overtemp. I've managed to solve that by, removing the processors and re applying the thermal compound on the heatsink. what i have left now with is the red light on  the logic board at the time i plugged in the power. At the same time when this light come on, the power indicator at the front panel come on as well. i am not sure what is this light relates to. We've replace the power supply too, and gone through the SMC reset but seems no help.
Any idea on the problem? I am desperate about it, and i will be greatful if anyone can help..
thanks and hope for your best solutions
    Kari
