Mac Pro starting on its own.

I have run across a bug I think. After shutting down a Mac Pro the machine has turned itself on during the night. In Preferences -> Energy Saver -> Startup after power failure has been unchecked. There are no applications that have a 'run during the night' theme so I am at a loss as to why the machine starts itself up. Anybody have any clues?

I think you're confusing sleep and shut down. If a machine is asleep (which is what it does if you just shut the lid on a laptop) and you plug in or unplug a USB device, the computer will wake up. Of course, if you're unplugging a USB flash drive in this way, you could damage it.
OTOH, if the machine is shut down, it will not detect removal of a USB device, much less start back up.

  • Mac Mini - Screensaver starting on its own and clock is fast ...

    Hi there experts ....
I've got a 4 month old Mac mini
    Model Identifier: Macmini3,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.53 GHz
I've noticed for the past couple of months the clock is 4 minutes fast ....
And the screeensaver is coming on by itself out of nowhere ...
I/ve run disk repair ... Maintenance ... put screensaver to never and even disabled front row screensaver
I've reset pram and nvram ... ANy clues ....?

So even if you put the screensaver to never it still starts on its own?
Also you clock runs faster by 4mins?
I smell an OS issue. Partition your drive and install a fresh OS onto it. If it works(no problem there) then restore the partition into 1 drive. Zero out the drive and put a fresh OS in it
    **back it up first
If the fresh OS on the new partition still fails. it could be a hardware failure.

  • My Mac Pro starts up when I turn on the power, BEFORE I switch it on with the button, why? Plus, my computer keeps freezing and blacking out.

My Mac Pro starts up when I turn on the power supply (when I plug it to the outlet), BEFORE I switch on the button on the computer, why is this happening? Plus, my computer keeps freezing and blacking out and I'm forced to restart it, that's when the compter starts on its own when I turn on the power.

    Hello Engender,
I should have followed up with a progress report because I eventually eliminated all the problems I was having with my Mac Pro, now it's behaving like a new computer… beautifully.   I did originally take Grant's advice above, changing the setting that I had in the System Preferences > Energy Saver but that only stopped from rebooting on its own when I shut down my Mac properly.  Otherwise it continued to restart on its own after freezing or crushing when I switched on the power.  I took my machine to the Apple Store and after many tests they couldn't find anything wrong with it.  I was very depressed about the whole business.
It was after going onto many of the other Apple related websites that I discovered that it wasn't a faulty power switch or fan, as as I originally thought, but found out that my problem was related to the Graphic Card and possibly I did not have enough ram (I had the original amount of 2 GB).  The original card that came with the computer: 512 MB ATI Radeon X1900 XT was over heating and forcing my machine to shut down, I think it was because I had upgraded to OSX Lion which on its own requires at least 2 GB of ram to operate well.  I added 4 GB of Ram to the 2GB I had (4GB kit (2GBx2), Apple 240-pin FBDIMM, DDR2 PC2-5300 upgrades for Apple Mac Pro (4-core) 1st Gen. - 2006-2007 Desktop/PC, CT579443 from Crucial.com about $160 for the set) and replaced the Graphic Card with ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB from Apple (around $260), (ATI Radeon HD 5770 Graphics Upgrade Kit for Mac Pro (Mid 2010) - Apple Store (U.S.))  This card works very well with my original Mac Pro 2008.  I installed it about two weeks ago and no problem with it starting on its own, over heating or freezing.  OSX Lion works well and I'm thinking of upgrading to Mountain Lion once I learn that my Mac Pro 1.1  will work with the new hardware I installed.
Your problem could just be the power cord but I agree with you that doesn't sound right, when I mentioned faulty switch I meant the part where the power cord meets the power button, the unit which houses the power distribution, I thought at first that it could be faulty but changed my mind because of the computer overheating.
I don't know if this is of any help to you but I hope your trouble will be solved with the new cord.

  • Can I buy Logic Pro 9 on its own?...

Or only as part of the Logic Studio suite? The Apple Store website doesn't seem to have an option for buying Pro 9 on its own.
What are the main differences between Pro and Logic Express.

Think of Logic Studio as buying only Logic Pro 9, but getting a whole bunch of extras for free.
And it's still half the price, and ten times the content, of what Logic Pro used to be on it's own.
And Logic Pro, came with all the optional extras which used to make the full Logic Platinum twice as much as Logic Pro was.
When I was first starting out, I was lucky enough to sort of intern at a studio, where I composed for commercials and very bad corporate videos and such. I was barely 18 at the time, and among other gear, the hallowed music production workstation I was trained on to do this work was the Fairlight series 3. By then the Fairlight was already a bit past its prime (this was the early 90s), but just to make a point - the thing cost like 100 grand. And was significantly less capable than one instance of the EXS 24. In fact, the laptop I use now, does more than everything we could do in that whole studio back then, outboard gear included. OK I'm not counting the mics and preamps. Nor the acoustically designed control room or recording rooms. But you get the point.
Ok I sound like grandpa going on about you young whipper-snappers, you have no idea how good you have it etc.. But I'm a pro musician only in my mid 30s, so it wasn't really that long ago.
499 bucks for everything I had access to in a multi-million dollar studio back then? Sounds like a more or less reasonable deal to me.

Why does my new Mac Mini restart on its own?
At diffrent times of the day or time.
    Thanks.

The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.
If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.

  • Mac pro start up trouble , 5 important questions!!

I went on a 2 week holiday where my mac pro dual core was unplugged. When I got back and started the system it would go to the desktop screen but would then either freeze or I would get red lines across the display. I would have to manually shut it down and restart till it worked normally.
So far I have reset the SMC, the PRAM/Nvram, I have replaced the computer battery, run Norton Anitvirus, run a apple Hardware test (it came back fine) I have run Disk Warrior and Tech Tools Pro 5 and I have done an OS X archive and install and nothing has changed.
Although today the first 2 times I turned it on there was no start up chime/black screen and it took 5 manual restarts to work!
Question 1: Should I do a fresh install?
Question 2: Trouble with the first question is that my Super Duper copy was made after the problem started - won't the problem just be transferred?
Question 3: Does migration assistant transfer my copy to my hard drive if I do a fresh install?
Question 4: What should I do? - Should I pay for it to be fixed?
    Any help is appreciated!!

    Thank you for the reply.
Can I ask a few questions as I'm slightly new to computers. I didn't quite get the freshly formatted new drive stuff.
In my mac pro I have the mac hd with an additional hd and I have one external drive which is my backup (I need to get another one).
Q1. Unfortunately my backup was made after way the trouble started so a fresh install and migrate won't help will it?
Q2. Because of this I was thinking of doing a fresh install then just transferring over the music and photos and downloading the software again - would this help?
Q3. Because of this, I own final cut studio 2 which was then stolen from me, can I just transfer this from my backup (if so how?)
Q4. How come you recommend uninstalling Norton Anti Virus?
Q5. If I do a fresh install should I remove my second hd until its done?
I tried the overnight trick with no luck.
    Thanking you in advance

  • Dial-up starting on its own

See my previous question. If I leave my PC to just go to sleep on its own, as per C) method, it sometimes starts to dial up, and I have to hurriedly hit the Disconnect button (Am not on Broadband, it is not yet available my area), so I have to be careful that it hasnt done this after I have left the room. Anyone any ideas how to prevent this?
Apple Mac os x Panther   Mac OS X (10.3)

go to System Preferences --> network ---> internal modem --->configure ---> PPP options.
There should be a check box that says "connect automatically when needed"
Make sure this box is NOT checked.
that should solve your problem (I hope)

  • Mac Pro starts up and then shuts down, how do I fix this?

Recently when I start up my Mac Pro it start its process and then I see the Apple Logo and then the screen goes black and the monitor says I think something like no digital signal.  I have to start up my Mac Pro a number of times before it finally stays open.  Because I use to see a bright flash when the Mac Pro would start up or shut down, I thought that may be the problem had to do with my monitor but I'm not sure.  I tried disk utilities and Tech Tools Pro 6 but nothing so far has helped the problem.  I don't think its my harddrive since all test say its OK.  Then I remembered some says something that computers have an internal battery and that they need to be replaced from time to time.  I don't know if my Mac Pro has a battery but does anyone know if this would cause my problem?

There is a pram battery but I don't think that's the cause of your problem.
Have you blown all the accumulated dust out of your machine?
Try reseating the video card, maybe the ram too.
Run Apple Hardware Test (boot from your second installer DVD, push D down immediatly after the boot chime).

  • Slideshow is starting on its own

    iPhoto 8.1.2
when I open iPhoto then select a photo to view, it is starting a slideshow on its own. I am unable to exit the show when I hit esc it restarts the slideshow. I can look at the strip at the bottom of the screen. I can not control it in any way. I have to force quite by holding down the power button.l
    not happy

Try this simple fix: trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
    *What's the plist file?*
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.
I have to force quite by holding down the power button.l
    Have you tried option-command-powerbutton?
    Regards
    TD

  • My WD Passport for mac won't recognise its own password or show up on the desktop

I have a Macbook Pro and have been using the Passport for 3 months without a problem. The cable was pulled out without ejecting the Passport the correct way. Now it doesn't show up on the desktop and a colourless window pops up and asks for the password. Im 100% sure the password is correct. The window thinks about it for about 20sec then shakes to not accept it.
I have tried to repair the Passport and that has not worked. Does anyone have another solutations to access the HD?
The passport still works, the light comes on and still spins.
It seems as if it has forgotten its own password and not recognised by the computer.

    Allan,
    Thank you for your reply.
Yes the WD Passport for Mac has its own password to access the drive. It is an option that i stupidly activated once it was installed. Previously as i plugged the Passport in it would pop up on my desktop and ask for the password. Which it would accept and then i could access the data. Now nothing comes up on my desktop but still asks for the password but does not accept it. The colour of the window for the password has also changed. It now looks like the "security and privacy" icon that you can find in your systems preferences.
It seems as if it has forgotten its own password or there is some other security or problem blocking me.
I obviously wasn't aware that this product had so many problems. I have not installed the Mavericks program to this computer yet as it takes time and im on the road without and solid internet connections.
I will persist with searching forums and trying to recover the data
Any information or help would be awesome!!!!

  • Strange screen issue on Mac Pro start up

    Hi,
Lets say every 1 in 20 times I start up my 2010 Mac Pro I get a stange tartan effect on the screen which flickers.  Sometimes it has even had a screen with
static like a television.  The only way to fix this is to unplug the DVI connector on the back of the computer and reconnnect - after doing this the issue is
resolved until the next time it happens.
Furthermore I don't believe it is a software problem as I have had this issue from day one of owning the computer.  I stupidly assumed that a software fix would
be released and didn't persue Apple for a repair/replacement.
The problem persisted into OS 10.6 and 10.7 and 10.8.
Graphics card replacement?  Any advice would be helpful.
    Thanks

Yes it is the card that came with the computer.  I'm using the 30" Cinema Display (2560 x 1600) though DVI.
Spoke to Apple Care and they haven't got any records of similar issues.

  • MAC Pro start up problems ( Maybe Snow leopard issue?)

I can't get to start my Mac Pro,
My mac started working slow and then I had a white screen, I went to apple Geniuis and the reinstaled Snow leopard. and then it work but with a diferent hard disc.
But after a few days it starts to go slow, and then uploading bar shows up at starup and takes long. After a day after the wheel starts turning at start up and my macpro won't work it keeps on wheeling. I tried to reboot with the disc but it won't reboot.
Now I put my old hard disc it works but slow. My hardrives are new and have plenty of space.
Any idea what it could be?
    THX.

What I always start off with:
    SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner
Disk Warrior or another disk maintenance tool
Then start resolving like any other issue: one at a time.
cables, printers, devices - unplug them all and add back after the problem goes away one at a time
    SMC Reset
    Safe Boot
    Apple Hardware Test
    Why do you think 10.6?
Does all your software and drivers meet SL?
Clean install vs update in place
Did you import old prefs data and files and applications?
You have the old X1900 with its problems?
Or you have 7300GT OEM also old, and failing.
Or you upgraded to a new video card (but then you wouldn't be using Tiger).
You might be runnning programs in the background or processes that are corrupt or not compatible?
