Mac Pro to HD TV Headache (DVI to HDMI)

Hey,
I'm looking to output my mac pro to my HDTV (cheap mans video output monitor). I got a DVI to HDMI connector and all the females and males seem to agree to the point that its all connected up rather well.
Only problem is that my mac pro only detects my computer monitor, not the TV that I've attached. Things to note:
- I normally run two monitors at 1920 x 1200. I just removed one and replaced with DVI > HDMI adapter going to TV.
* I can get the display to work in windows (although for some reason, although it outputs to the TV via HDMI the other screen stops working) so the connectors are working fine.
* I tried hooking up the monitor to the port, downgrade the res to something below 1080, then connected the TV again, no result!
* I couldn't get 1080 resolution on my screens as its not an option in the display preferences.
* Before anyone states the obvious (at this point even that would be helpful) I restarted every time I attached another display.
* I have searched google, apple support, and these forums and I feel im going insane.
To summarise, I havent seen my mac on the TV yet. Its staring back at me with a blank black. Not good!
Any help would be much apprecaited,
Cheers,
K

Hmm, maybe its my graphics card?
I've tried it both on a TV and a HD projector, getting the same result.
If i go to windows then set the resolution to 1920x1080 then it works, so cable and everything is good. Its just the Mac that doesn't pick up the display. If there was anyway I could force it to find the display or be able to set my resolution to 1920x1080 it might help!
Frustration is really setting in now!
Also, I remember a while back I got two new monitors. I couldn't get these to work until I plugged in my old monitors, reduced the resolution, then plug in the new ones. I dont know if its some bug with my computer specifically or its something more generic.

  • Mac Mini G4 Unsupported Video Format DVI to HDMI 42 Phillips 1080P LCD TV

When connecting my Mac Mini G4 to my 42" Phillips 1080P LCD TV using a DVI to HDMI cable I get a message on the TV "Unsupported Video Format" message. I can connect my PowerBook G4 using the same cable and it connects great.
One thing I have noticed is when connecting my Mini via DVI cable to my 17" LCD monitor the screen is a fated red. But using a VGA cable the screen is fine. I don't know if this is having to do anything with the issue of connecting to my LCD TV.
    Any suggestions?

Make sure the connections are good and tighten down the thumb screws on all connectors. If two monitors are giving problems with DVI, it could be there is a hardware problem with the DVI port on the mini.
Also, try starting in Safe mode (boot while holding down the shift key) and see if you get a useable screen in that case. If you still get the unsupported video format message, then that would further suggest some hardware problem with DVI.

I do not know the iWire adapter, but I use an inexpensive ($3) DVI to HDMI adapter from Monoprice, along with a regular HDMI cable:

Be aware that this will only transfer video. You Macbook Pro cannot combine audio through DVI to HDMI. You will need to listen to the audio through the Mac speakers, or attach speakers or a sound system to the Mac earphone jack, or determine if your TV has the ability to accept external sound from the Mac while showing video through HDMI (few can).

My Mac Pro 1.1 has two DVI ports which seem to be the only ones that I can use for display.  I'm using one port with a VGA adaptor to a Viewsonic monitor.  Will the other DVI port on the Mac support a 1080p output through an HDMI adapter to the Sony video monitor?  If so, is there a DVI to HDMI adapter available for this Mac and will it support 1080p?

  • Using 2005 30" Cinema display with new mac pro

I will order a new MacPro to replace my Mac Pro 1.1 immediately upon release.  I also have a 30" Cinema Display version 2005.  It's interface with the existing Mac Pro is three cable hookup:  DVI, USB and Firewire 400.  By connecting the Cinema display using a bunch of adaptors, can I make the display work with the new MacPro until a good 4K display is out there?  Alternatively, I'll have to buy a new display from current technology or the few 4k's available today.
    Thanks for your help.

yes, use a Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI adapter plugged into the ThunderBolt port. The HDMI port has limited resolutions, not including 1560 by 1600 best for 30" cinema display.

  • Can I use 2 Matrox DoubleHead2Go on a Mac Pro 1.1 ?

    Hi there,
I'd like to us 2 dualhead2go in order to use them on a 2009 Mac Pro 1.1 with 2 DVI outputs.
Can a Mac OSX system on a Mac Pro 1.1 with 2 DVI handle 2 devices like that, one on each DVI, in order to have 4 screens ?
Or could I only do 3 screens with an only one TripleHead2Go on one of the DVI available on the MacPro 1.1 ?
Let me know if you have tested that or now a bit more than the Matrox website...
    Regards,
    Julien

If you have a mac Pro 1,1 which can only run up to Mac OS X 10.7.5, your options are somewhat limited.
If you have a 2009 model or any model that can run Mac OS X AFTER 10.7.5, there are many graphics card solutions you can use to support as many as six displays directly from your Mac.

  • Four monitor setup on 2013 mac pro using old 23" Cinema Displays

My current monitor setup on a 2009 mac pro is four monitors.  Three 23" Apple Cinema Displays (aluminum, mid 2000's) and one large Sony HDTV mounted to the wall as a fourth monitor.
I achieve this via 2 Geforce 120 video cards, each with a mini display port and a Dvi port each.
My question is, can I retain this same exact monitor setup on a new 2013 Mac pro cylinder?  If so, what adapters will be needed, and do they all plug into the thunderbolt ports?
Hearing all kinds of nightmares about multiple monitor problems with the new MP so want to be sure this will work before I drop big bucks.
    Thanks!

    Thanks for the quick reply!
For the Tv I'm currently going VGA out of that to a Dvi adapter into the old Mac Pro.  The 3 Cinema Displays are all ether direct Dvi to the video card and two I have to use a Dvi to mini display port adapter.
So for the new Mac Pro, assuming I don't use the HDMI port, I would need Dvi to minidisplayport adapters for each of the 3 cinema displays and a VGA to minidisplayport for the TV?
EDIT: And the mini display ports may as well all be active I guess, and they need to plug into the usb bus for power?
    Thanks

  • Mac Pro quits after 30 minutes of use!?

    Hello,
I'm having a problem with a group of Mac Pro towers that are set up in a lab. The problem is:
The machine abruptly goes into a power save mode, the display goes black and
is impossible to wake. The computer is still on but inaccessible and the only way
to wake the machine is through a hard restart.
The problem has been occurring intermittently and randomly since last Spring. The specs on those machines are:
MacPro, 2x3 GHz Quad core – Intel Xeon
    2 GB Ram
    OS 10.6.6
The machine used to be attached to a
Dell 2407WFPb LCD monitor but has since been replaced with an
    Acer - 24" Widescreen Flat-Panel TFT-LCD HD Monitor
The problem has caused a lot of issues and been a real beast to try to
troubleshoot as it occurs randomly. Lately it seems to have gotten worse, I was able to recreate it and it is now occurring after approx. 30 minutes of use. Here's a list of what I've tried (unsuccessfully).
    - Turned monitor on/off.
    - Unplugged monitor from power supply.
    - Unplugged DVI cable from Mac Pro and reinserted
    - Tried both DVI ports
    - Tried a different monitor
    - Changed energy settings on computer to NEVER
    - Repaired permissions
    - SMS reset
    - Updated to Snow Leopard
    - Computer put on new UPS
    - Tried VGA cable with VGA to DVI adaptor (because read that the DVI could be
    an issue)
    - Wiped machine and did clean install of Snow Leopard, FCP, CS5 and Microsoft Office
    - Bought new fleet of monitors (because researched that this problem occurred
fairly regularly with this model of Dell monitor and because this problem never
occurred with machine attached to Apple Cinema Display)
    Please help!

Are you having this problem with all the MP's, or only one?
The problem occurs more regularly on 4 of the six MP's we have. Two of the fleet have never experienced it, the rest have the problem intermittently.
Is there some reason why you're still running 10.6.6?
No, just haven't updated to 10.6.7 yet, BUT, one machine is 10.6.7 and still has the issue
Besides what you mentioned, are you running any other third-party software? Nope
Are any other peripherals connected? Nope
Are there any error messages in the system log?
Not sure, I attached an image of the log right before the crash but I'm not sure what it means!
Is there a panic log or an application crash log? Nope

  • Monitor Problems / 10.4.8 / Mac Pro

Anyone that has any ideas on this problem would be much appreciated!!
I have 2 x Belinea B1925S1W 19" wide screen monitors running off my Mac Pro. They Both have DVI to VGA adaptors, one adapter is a Mac one, the other is made by Belkin.
The Problem is this: whenever I turn the computer on, the right hand monitor displays the picture so it is either half way off the screen or the image looks bitty and pixelated. The dock is too far off the screen to be accessed. The way I work around it is to have system preferences in my start up items and to re-choose the resolution of the screen. It is already set right when I go there, I have to choose the resoloution above it and then go back to the right one to fix the problem. The other monitor is fine.
It's SO annoying!! and has never worked correctly!
    Thanks in advance.....

Try sapping monitors, then cables, then adapters, to see if you can isolate the problem to a monitor, cable, adapter, or the graphics board. Try moving the menu bar to the other monitor in the "Arrangements" pane of "Displays" System Preference and see if the problem moves.

If it's your only display, you don't need any adapter. The Mac Pro graphics card has a DVI port.

  • Would Mac Pro work with 7yr old Apple monitor?

Hi to all. My question is: I'm just about ready to buy a Mac Pro, can I get away with using my old monitor from my G5 PPC, 7 yrs old? I didn't think so, but was told by an Apple retailer there should not be a problem.. Me, skeptical!

    If the display uses DVI
    <http://www.bluejeanscable.com/store/dvi-cables/dviiplug.jpg>
you don't need any adapter.  All Mac Pros have at least one DVI port.
If the plug is ADC (Apple Display Connector)
    <http://img.skitch.com/20100209-xr852fkc23esrq6b3cwdmcsxx9.jpg>
you need a DVI to ADC adapter

The adapter contains the power supply.

  • What is the proper way to disconnect a magic mouse and reconnect a wired mouse with new Mac Pro?

I can disconnect the magic mouse pairing, but when I then connect the wired mouse, it malfunctions. I can open folders, etc., but then I can't close them by clicking on the close button.

Thanks for your response. Actually, this is the first thing I did. But I just tried it again, and still the mouse malfunctions.
I can open a folder, but when I press the close button in the corner, a toolbar customization menu comes up, but the window does not close.
I have already chatted online with an apple tech several times and taken my computer in to an apple store tech -  but no resolution to the problem. The online tech could see the problem with screen sharing, but couldn't fix it, and the tech at the apple store could not replicate the problem. In pursuit of an answer, I have also purchased a new wireless mouse (which works), a new wired mouse, and a new keyboard.
I have a late 2013 Mac Pro running 10.9.5, connected by HDMI to a 27" LG IPS display (27EA83R). I am now going to purchase a new HDMI cable and see if that helps. If it doesn't, the only thing left that hasn't been replaced or tested by a tech is the display. I have been assured by both an LG tech and an apple tech that the display is almost certainly not the problem -  but at this point I am not sure I have the greatest confidence in these guys.

  • Eye strain on Mac Pro late 2013

    Hi guys,
I Have a problem with my Mac Pro late 2013. After few hours of work my eyes start to hurt really badly, my head hurts also. I am working on Dell U2713HM, few days ago I changed it for a pair of u2312 Dell monitors and I feel the eye strain again. When I try to work on my Asus laptop using the same monitor I don't have a problem. I tryed all the advices on the web for eye strain regarding monitor configuration but it has no effect. Also i can see the image on the monitor isn't rendering properly for example when I open an image there is always some square parts randomly missing.
Do I have a graphic card problem, monitor problem or something else.
    Any experiences anybod, please help.

I agree I tried a little Google and came up with this site maybe something to look at https://discussion.evernote.com/topic/47161-mac-evernote-clip-rectangle-control- command-c-not-working/page-2 and there seems more have problems thoug not with Mac Pro MBP Retina: Poor image quality from hdmi output

  • DVI-D - HDMI switcher - DVI-D

    Hey friends,
I've got a fairly convoluted and confusing HDMI situation. As DVI matrix switchers are so expensive, I decided to get a HDMI switcher and HDMI to DVI cables. I have two Mac Pro towers, each with two DVI outputs, and two 24" Cinema HD displays. So, my signal flow is:
Mac Pros - DVI to HDMI cables (x4) - HDMI matrix switcher - HDMI cable - HDMI to DVI adaptor - Cinema HD tail
The monitors simply flash three short lights, which Apple support tells me means that they are recieving an invalid format or resolution. I thought that HDMI and DVI were completely compatible formats... Any ideas as to why this is not working?
    Thanks!

Going through a lot of "adapters" in that setup (cables "adapters", switcher, dvi adaptor).  I guess my first question would be to supply all the details of all those components to verify they are the proper components to handle the signals.  So, list url's to all the stuff:
    1. dvi-to-hdmi cable
    2. hdmi switcher
    3. hdmi-to-dvi adaptor
    4. hdmi cables (including lengths)
Maybe there's something in the specificaions of these things that would indicate the problem.
    Update:
As an experiment you might want to try a single monitor and macpro without the switch.  mac pro --> dvi-to-hdmi cable --> hdmi-to-dvi adaptor --> monitor.  If it works then obviously the switch would be the culprit.
