Mac Pro to PC running XP using Fire Wire?

Is this a possible setup? any links or suggestions?

I'd like to second Eric's iFelix recommendation (Tiger to XP Networking). It took me and a work colleague who'd never done much networking before 2 minutes flat to get Panther/XP talking.
For further reference you've posted in the iMac Flat Panel forum
You will be better to post in the iMac Early 2006 forums in future
- the users there will share more common experiences.

Mac Pro can’t running any two fire wire hard disks at the same time . which two hard disks have extra power from power socket . If i just insert one of them .No problem . If connect two Hds at the same time. Leopard cant find it and the Hds seem no problem. the machine must be restarted and then use one . No problem . I have formated the HD many times .even if which format is Fat 32 or Mac issue persists .Boot from installation CD used the disk utility . Issue stills . If i used one fire wire HD that get power from power socket and used one fire wire device . Leopard was no problem during this time . Whether is this design problem or my machine hardware problem? My Mac has been changed the logic board by Apple service . Do you have similar case in here????

I connect both hard disks that get power from power supply normally. Also have ever changed the format as GUID. Which always use the power cord . I felt confusion why the issue just happened connect both hard disks with extra power at the same time. If i used one hard disk connect to firewire port . Another firewire port connect other firewire device . No problem at all.

  • TS1362 I have a Mac Pro tower, am running osx and iTunes will not work.. It basically just stopped working after having run faultlessly for...years... I can see all the songs, playlists etc, but the progress bar will not progress..it's 'stuck'. Suggestion

I have a Mac Pro tower am running OSX and iTunes will not work. It has always worked flawlessly. I can see all my iTunes content- my playlists, my songs et cetera, But I cannot play anything. The progress bar is  'stuck'...any suggestions?

Thanks. I have been using iTunes since its inception and have never had a problem...I'm using the latest version. The progress bar is the bar that moves when you're playing a song..it just won't start when I double click on a song,..have tried quitting, rebooting etc but nothing works. Apple are useless-they have told me twice they've tried to call me 'momentarily', but I've been waiting by the phone, and they definitely have not tried to call...

I have a new Mac Pro.  I want to use my old Mac Pro as a storage drive for photos and old documents, linked to my new Mac Pro.  How do I set up the old computer?  Both computers have OS X10.9.3.  Currently they are connected by a Firewire 800 cable.

You certainly could keep the old Mac Pro in Firewire mode (hold down the T key on its keyboard as you boot) to show its drives on the new MP. This is basically as fast as putting the drives into a Firewire enclosure.
Or you could boot it normally and share its files over the network using the Sharing panel of System Preferences. If you turn on both File and Screen Sharing, you don't even need to have a monitor attached - you can do all administration using screen sharing. However, this method requires that you open all files over the network, which will be slower than the direct-connect method above, and may also not work with all applications.

    erik193,
in Parallels Desktop, you’ll need to divide your RAM between your host OS (OS X) and your guest OS (e.g. Windows). How much RAM you should allocate to the guest OS will depend upon what you need to do in the guest OS.

  • New Mac Pro - need to run using 10.4 operating system

I need to run a UNIX based program (Gaussian) on a new Mac Pro. According to the Gaussian website (http://www.gaussian.com/gbrochures/g03_onmacs.htm) their program is only supported for Intel systems running on 10.4 OS (and not 10.5). Is it possible to purchase a new mac running 10.4, or alternatively how easy is it to downgrade the 10.5 OS to 10.4?
Thank you in advance for your answers.
    Rob

Gaussian sure is a blast from the past! In my previous life I did some work with Gaussian 88 and our typical runs lasted about 12 hours each. When the MFLOPS gods were with us, we could do one in about 6 hours on the Cray X-MP down in Austin. It's quite amazing that this can now be done on the computer sitting under my desk!
As far as your question goes, it looks like you will have to wait for Gaussian to build a Leopard compatible version for Intel-based Macs. In the mean time, I have read that it's possible to install SuSe Linux on a Mac Pro on a separate partition. Assuming that your license allows you to use the Linux binary, it might be possible to use it. You would have to reboot to do a Gaussian run, so it's not the most elegant solution, but it's the only way I can see it working.
Good luck with your number crunching!

  • How to upgrade from PowerPC G4 w/1GB using CS2 to Mac Pro w/2GB running CS3

    Hello. I have a Mac PowerPC G4 with 1GB of RAM and I'm running OS X 10.4.11. I'm using CS2 ver 9.0.2.
I have a new Mac Pro with 2GB of RAM and I'm running OS X v10.5.2.
I would like to run CS3 on my new Mac Pro.
Could anyone guide me in accomplishing this? I'd like to buy the upgrade to CS3 of course.
I can't figure out how to do this because of course I want to just load CS3 on the new computer but I want to pay for just the upgrade. And, if I buy the upgrade, I'm not sure my old computer will run CS3.
    Thanks,
    Deena

    Deena,
In addition to the previous comments, before you do this though, I recommend that you put more RAM in your computers (particularly the G4) so they don't choke trying to run CS3, your operating system, and whatever else you have running. Also check your hard drive free space, particularly on your older Mac, so that you have scratch disk space and place to store at least some of your images.
And in preparation for the CS3 installation (which is really quite easy), be sure you boot off the System Disk and use Disk Utility to repair permissions and the disk and boot off the DiskWarrior disk and run repairs as well. Repeat repair permissions after the installation. These maintenance routines will help insure that your new CS3 runs well.
You will find that you have both CS2 and CS3 on your drive. You can safely uninstall CS2 if you wish.
If you have questions about any of this, please get back to us.

  • My mac pro book is running slow and I can hardly go on the internet without all kinds of pop ups and ads making it impossible to surf the net.

I have a mac pro book version 10.10 that is running on the sluggish side. I can hardly use the internet  because every time I click on a link or details about a product  all the pop ups that make it impossible to surf the net. I am afraid to take any steps on my own because I am not quite that tech savvy. What can I do?  I didn't think these kinds of things happened with a mac.

  • What do I do with Mac Pro desktop fans running without extra heat?

My Mac Pro desktop has begun running the fans without the computer being hot or even warm. Is it a hardware fix? I tried shutting down and unpluging for 15 sec. to reset the SMC. No help.

Pushed power button before removing power cord for 15 sec. restart
I should have said, but felt it clear enough... Hit power button WHILE or AFTER UNPLUGGED and before connecting power again.
Apple has changed and rewritten its "How To" article at least 4-5 times just for the Mac Pro section in the last 7.5 yrs.
Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    https://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Using the reset button on a motherboard is always an option and was in the first set of directions, with arrow pointing to the exact button and its location back in 2006-7.
Just unplugging is... not effective, and hitting power button while unplugged, helps, some.

  • My mac pro 2008 is running very very slow. I need to give it a good clean.Any suggestions?

My 2008 mac pro is running slower and slower, what can I do to get it running faster?

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
Otherwise, take the steps below when you notice the problem.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
    Step 2
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • Mac Pro FirePro D700 running CS6 OnLocation and Encore. Any Issues?

    Hey everyone,
I'm attempting to help someone out with a purchase of a new Mac Pro. They do alot of video work and currently are using Adobe CC2014 as well as CS6 for OnLocation and Encore.
They would like to get a new Mac Pro running OS 10.10.2, the dual FirePro D700 6GB video cards, 1 TB SSD and the 64GB ram.
Doing some reading, it looks like the CC 2014 apps should work just fine, but what about the older CS6 OnLocation and Encore? are there any performance issues or stability issues with theses program with the FirePro D700?
Just like to hear some experiences before he takes the plunge and spends the money on the MacPro
    Thanks in advance!
    ~John
