Mac Pro Updates??

Why oh why did Apple squander the opportunity once again to update the Mac Pro's aging video cards?
Every video card in the BTO options is at least a year and a half old. Apple needs to offer the 8800GTX or GTS as the high-end card. The x1900xt is a *year and a half* old.
I used the Mac Pro online feedback form to let them know. I suggest all of you do the same.
http://www.apple.com/feedback/macpro.html

This is really frustrating me, im just about to buy a new computer for University.
I currently have a lovely PowerMac G4 from 2002 and its works PERFECTLY and I also have a very very very fast new PC that I built.
Now Im only taking one computer to Uni, and I want it to be a mac. But I simply won't spend £2000 ($4000 dollars for you in america :p) on a computer with a graphics card I bought in December 2005.
Especially when I can build a faster PC for half the cost of a Mac Pro, overclocked naturally, but as thats what I would do with a PC if I got one, its included in the comparison.
So PLEASE apple, get a HD 2900XT, 4x3ghz and 2Gb ram for £2000, PLEASE!

    Please Help !
I bought Logic studio, with logic pro 9.0.0 last year, worked perfectly on my macbook pro.
Just got a new mac pro, with macos 10.7 Lion.. I install the software, serial works,
then I update the software, because 9.0.0 can't open in os 10.7, and after accepting my serial,
it asks me for an "original serial" that I have no idea about..
    sry for the english..
Please HELP, I cant survive without logic more than an hour !

I think this is a known problem with Lion and some installs of Logic, I've seen it mentioned before.

  • Mac Pro Update Soon?

I currently own a 17" MacBook Pro (2009), a Mac Pro G5, a 27" iMac (this year), an iPhone 4, and two iPods.
I edit video and produce music with Final Cut Pro 7 and Logic 9 (among other things). I have invested heavily in Apple products, and I'm preparing to invest even more this coming year in order to prepare for some upcoming film projects I will be editing and scoring.
I am patiently waiting to learn whether or not the Mac Pro will be updated soon, or will it be killed altogether.
I am not at all impressed with Apple's recent actions, to wit: Reducing Final Cut Pro to a higher version of iMovie; killing the 17" MacBook Pro; and releasing a watered down and dysfunctinoal version of Maps for the iPhone and iPad, to name a few.
I have planned on obtaining a new iPhone 5 and the iPad (64GB) this year, as well as a 12-core Mac Pro (or equivalent depending on whatever new models may be released).
However, if Apple kills off the Mac Pro, or renders it a useless pile of techno-junk in order to serve the large mass-consumer market, I WILL walk away from Apple in its entirety. This includes puchasing a different phone, tablet, and workstation this year. For now, I will keep my old iPhone 4 on month-to-month with Verizon until these decisions shake out.
Apple needs to realize that its decisions often impact other portions of their product line when they alienate and frustrate their professional users - who are not dependent upon Apple's workflows or UIs to get their work done. I am equally efficient and confident on either platform, but I use Apple out of preference.
As much as I hate MicroTrash Winblows, I will not allow my production efforts (and investments) to be left to the whims of Apple's executive managment and most-likely ill-informed and dysfunctional stockholders.
At anywhere between $5,000 and $14,000 for a Mac Pro, this is not a small investment, and before I make said investment, I need to know that the vendor is going to continue to support the product both now and in the years to come.
Any insight anyone could provide regarding Apple's proposed strategies surrounding the Mac Pro would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you!

There were 100 threads and even more posts for the last year. Apple doesn't hear or read forum content.
2013 could be a sleeper year too if Intel decides to skip Xeon Ivy Bridge and so close to the next tick-toc - Intel developer conference pretty much sets the stage for the next year which IDC is in October - where we heard about Penryn that went into 2008s, Nehalem's went into 2009.
Buy refurbished 2010 $1819 and throw in $1000 W3690 and 3x16GB - core speed and single socket and max out RAM and load up on PCIE SSD as well.

throw in GTX 670 or 570...

  • Wireless Mac pro update: MA688ZM/B

Is the same the wireless kid MA688ZM/B:
    than the MA688Z/B and MA688Z/A ??
I wanted to know is the MA688ZM/B can work with 802.11n
    Thanks.

This is an update concerning this wireless "b/g" problem.
The local Mac shop replaced the Airport Extreme card, retested and found the same problem: the Mac pro would get a stable connection to the "N" network but not to the "g" network. I supplied them with info I found on the discussion boards about changing the wire positions to the BT and Airport cards. This is normally done to improve the BT signal but it couldn't hurt. We did numerous tests of numerous configurations and the problem still persisted.
The Head Tech manager decided to order new antennas, tore the Mac apart, installed them, tested the **** out of it and discovered in the process that the three other Mac pros in the store have exactly the same issue! The wireless "g" reception is terrible! Moving the Mac Pro to within 20 feet of the router gave them all a strong, stable signal, lugging the Macs to the other end of the store caused them to all either lose the signal completely or maintain 1 bar.
As a final test we forced the router into "b" mode only and voila! All the Mac pros got stable signals with 3-4 bars showing! I am now writing this message with full wireless strength after forcing my router into "b" mode only. It is really a shame to lose the speeds of "g" mode in a computer of this caliber.
The upside of the whole experience is that the Head Technician was a great guy and gave me fantastic service! And I added some muscle tone to my arms and legs from lugging this beast through the snow.

  • 10.5.3 update on Mac Pro stuck on spinning wheel

    Greetings,
Updated 10.5.3 yesterday on the Mac Pro, update failed, had to restart, restart is stuck on gray screen with spinning wheel. Did verify disk permission, repair disk permissions, reboot no luck, still the spinning wheel appears. Cannot boot in safe mode.
Any suggestions on what do do other than archive and reinstall?
    Thanks for any suggestions!

Did verify disk permission, repair disk permissions
Steffi, since you can not boot I will assume you did this from your install DVD under Disk Utility. Go back again and this time run the Disk Repair, if there are any error (red) message run the Repair again. Then check the SMART Status at the bottom of the window, it should say "Verified". Quit DU, reboot, then download the 10.5.3 Combo Update from the Apple site and try it again this time without any peripheral attached.

  • Mac Pro Thunderbolt, USB3, etc. hardware upgrades...

Feeling a bit left out in 2 years since I bought my Mac Pro with no real hardware upgrades for my Mac Pro.
Can anyone comment on what they've done to keep their Mac Pro updated with the latest?
    - Thunderbolt.  I was surprised this wasn't in the updated 2012 Mac Pro.  Has anyone heard of any third party thunderbolt cards?  I've gone ahead and purchased a Thunderbolt hard drive for my Mac Book Air that also has a FireWire 800 port.  I'm planning on using Apple's Thunderbolt to FireWire adapter (intended for MBA and MBP laptops) in reverse and use the adapter on the Thunderbolt hard drive to connect it to my Mac Pro tower's FireWire 800 port.  At least this way when Thunderbolt does arrive for us I can just stop using the adapter.  Apple genius said this should work, but I guess the proof will be when I go to copy lots of data (something Macs already struggle with) http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD464ZM/A
    - USB 3.0.  Has anyone found a good reliable USB 3.0 card for the Mac Pro?  Again I was surprised Apple left this out of the 2012 refresh.  I like the faster speeds over FireWire 800 and if folks have found a good working USB 3.0 card that works I'll gladly put one in my tower.  I looked at the La Cie USB 3 PCI add on card, but haven't heard anything about native support for it from Apple.  http://www.lacie.com/products/product.htm?id=10493
    - Display card.  Anyone have recommendations on a better display card than the default one Apple shipped?  Apple's original ATi Radeon HD 5770 works like crap with HDMI (mini display port or DVI), especially to my new Samsung 27" HDMI monitor.  I'd love to get a new Apple Thunderbolt Display and refuse to buy the antiquated Apple Cinema Display.  Seeing Apple's new Mac Mini with both HDMI and Thunderbolt gives me hope, but the Intel HD Graphics 4000 chipset seems pathetic.  I did like that Apple gave the new iMac a NVIDIA Kepler GPU so maybe there is hope for the Mac Pro yet.
    - Anyone find anything useful to put in the extra optical drive slot?  The dream of a BlueRay recorder with Lightscribe support and Mac drivers seems long dead.  I'd love to see some innovation like a removable SSD drive bay or something better than the coffee cup holder it has become.
Ramblings on what has and hasn't been working for me...
If there are Mac Pro users who like to work in the dark I would highly recommend the Moshi Luna backlighted keyboard.  It works great and allows me to video edit without having to strain my eyes with uncessary room lights in order to see the keyboard.  It sure beats the USB powered LED I was using to shine a light on Apple's extended keyboard!  I still have to switch from Apple's Magic Trackpad to Magic Mouse when I bootcamp to Windows 7 (the trackpad drivers are not robust enough under Windows unless someone has found a solution).
I also ran into a horrific issue with Paragon's HFS+ Win 7 drivers hosing my Mac drives when I tried to use Sony's PMB software to copy HD movies to my Mac drives (NEVER AGAIN).
Any thoughts you have I'd love to hear!

Asus makes a card but it only works with certain motherboards made by them. Doesn't exactly have to be installed 'at the factory' but could be interpreted as such.
Until I start seeing PCIe graphics cards that support Thunderbolt either directly with a Thunderbolt connector on the card or an internal Display Port to Thunderbolt connector I'm not sure I would want a display that connects only with Thunderbolt.
HDMI and Display Port is well tested technology. Many displays are available.
Limited (i.e. none to my knowledge) options at this time for discreet graphics cards that support Thunderbolt. So either you use either the Intel integrated graphics chipset (low performance) for video or a non-Thunderbolt display with a discreet graphics card.
If you daisy chain devices you have to share the bandwidth much like you do with Firewire.
Thunderbolt is great for laptops a small footprint computers because it extends the PCIe architecture outside of the computer giving you the option of using higher data capacities associated with PCIe. But since Mac Pros already have four PCIe slots why would you want to use up 4 PCIe lanes for a dedicated interface that is still in it's infancy?

  • How can I buy Mountain Lion from an unsupported laptop? I want to install it on a Mac Pro but it doesn't have an OS to open App Store

I have a MacBook Classic that is unsupported and my Mac Pro is supported but I can't open App Store from it because there's no OS and I can't purchase from my classic because it's unsupported. Halp

Buy Snow Leopard for your Mac Pro, update it to 10.6.8, purchase and download Mountain Lion. There is no other solution.

  • New Mac Pro Tower Configuration

    Hi
I am currently looking at purchasing a new Mac Pro Desktop Tower to run CS 5.5.  I am planning to use it for longer video projects with premier and AE.  I would also be using audition to some extent.
I don't think that I can afford to go with a twelve core version of the Mac Pro, but I am wondering what is the best way to configure the ram/processor/video card?
Also are there any compatability issues with OSX Lion?
    Any help will do.
    Thanks

While the case for building a PC is strong and valid, and while I would build a PC if I needed a new system right now, I also understand the needs of some institutions to build a Mac. Here is my advice in that regard:
    1. You don't need dual processors. I have a single 6-core 3.33GHz chip in my 2009 Mac Pro (which I upgraded myself) and it handles heavy work in Premiere and After Effects CS5.
    2. Don't buy any RAM from Apple. With the price of hard drives today, it isn't such a big deal to have Apple install extra drives for you, but if you're even slightly technically inclined, you can install more RAM and hard drives for less if you shop and buy from other vendors. There is a great Mac-specialty website where I buy my RAM from called OWC (Other World Computing link) that has excellent deals and service. I think 24GB is minimum ($322), and 32GB is better... only $425 right now.
    3. If you have the budget, a proper third party RAID card is a much better deal and performer than Apple's Mac Pro RAID Card, so don't waste your money there unless you really want to limit yourself to an internal RAID 5 of no more than four disks. I got by with a 3-drive RAID (AID) 0 stripe of disks for a year before needing to expand to a proper RAID. With three Apple drives striped together, you'll get a sustained data throughput of 330MB/sec both read and write speed, which is good enough to edit some HD video. I edited a feature-length film shot on P2 at 108060i/24p using only three internal Apple 1TB disks, with backups to external drives holding a safety net for my data.
    4. You don't need to buy an NVIDIA /CUDA card (Quadro 4000). I have the 5870 from Apple, and I can edit DSLR 5DMkII footage in smooth real-time, but that is helped by the 32GB of RAM and fast RAID. I have a CUDA card, an older GTX285, and while it was good for Premiere, I felt it was slower than the 5870 in After Effects, which is where I spend more time rendering anyway.
I'm not sure how much weight you'll be placing on student projects being safe from loss in the event of a drive failure, but you could either have them back their projects up themselves on their own external drives, or build a robust RAID. I have an Areca RAID card that runs eight 2TB disks in RAID6, which yields 12TB of very fast data that is also still safe if any two of the eight drives fails before being replaced. Depending on the number of students using the system, it could cost less to build a similar RAID than have each student buy their own drives. Question is, does the school eat that cost of security for the students, or let them shoulder that cost themselves?
I was a film school student myself, and I know what it's like to sign up for a four-hour block on a limited number of edit suites. You want the system to run faster than the students, so they can be creative without wasting their time slot waiting for the computer.
With your education discount from Apple, you should be able to get a 6-core 2010 Mac Pro, RAM, disks (and RAID if you go that route) from 3rd parties about $6000... much less if you skip the RAID system. If I can help in any way, let me know. I love my system, even if I could build it in a PC today at half the cost. Adobe works the same (or better) on a PC as it does on a Mac once you're in the software, but if you have to go Apple and can't wait for what may come out in the future, consider a system like mine.
2009 Mac Pro (updated to 2010 firmware... you'd buy a 2010 and not worry about that.)
    3.33GHz 6-core CPU
ATI Radeon HD 5870 (still runs software acceleration very nicely)
    32GB RAM @1333MHz
    (4) internal hard disks (1=OS X, Adobe CS5, 2+3=RAID0 (stripe) for scratch files, 4=other backups and storage)
    Areca 1880ix-12 RAID card
    Sans Digital 8-bay tower
    (8) 2TB WD RE-4 hard disks in RAID6 = 12TB parity array (sustained 816MB/sec write, 714MB/sec read speeds)
    Various backups in external disks.
    Good luck!

  • Mac Pro 2012 Refresh Quandary

    Hello All
I have a Mac Pro 2008, 3,1, 2.8ghz 2xQuad core. It is over 4 years old. I'm editing in Premiere Pro CS5.5 and I have a NVidia Quadro 4000 card and 24GB of RAM and SSD startup drive and multiple RAID 0 internal and eSATA RAID 5 Qx2 enclosures and eSATA PCI cards. I believe I've maxed out the performance. I was waiting for the new Apple Mac Pro update to make buying a new Mac Pro a good decision. I really don't want to go over to Windows, not to mention the hugh amount of software I'd have to convert over.
However, Apple's update seems weak and outdated and leaves me undecided. Many mention the 6 core as the 'sweet spot', in price vs performance, but I'm wondering really how much of a boost I'll get over my current system. I'm also contemplating building a super high end Hackintosh but that doesn't seem appealing either as doing it in Xeon will be prohibitively expensive not to mention possibly flakey with Mac OS X. I suppose I could also wait for HP or Dell to come out with their E5 offerings and try to put Hackintosh software on that, but again, seems like asking for trouble.
The good thing about updating to a newer Mac pro is that my internal drives, RAIDs PCI cards and peripherals will just work, I will have minimal down time when I switch. Bad thing is 2 year old technology with brand new tech in the G5 Xeons just around the corner.
Right now I really want Premiere Pro to be smooth when natively playing back a combination of AVCHD, H.264 and other files and effects. It's just on the cusp of being too sluggish with my current configuration. From what I can see, I may  double the performance if I go to the single 6 core 3.33, which seems to be a good deal as of the refresh. However, I'm not sure if doubling is what I want considering the money and trouble spent on a new system. At the same time I have heard reports that Premiere Pro and Mac OS X don't do too well with more than 12 cores, the multi-threading isn't taken advantage of and can actually slow down the system. So I am still in a quandry.
    Any advice is much appreciated
    Regards,
    -Keith

I had the exact same conundrum about three months ago. After TONS of research, I decided to build my own PC and I am extremely happy I did. The CS5.5 Master Collection runs beautifully and I FINALLY have control over my hardware. You can put whatever Quadro card you want, whatever processor, RAM, and the list goes on...
And did I mention that I saved loads of money building it myself?
If you aren't afraid of a little bit if work, you can save a lot of money not having to buy overpriced Apple hardware. Also, with Adobe Cloud, you no longer need to worry about what platform you operate under (Windows 7 is a good operating system).
Just my two cents. I hope it helps!

  • Is it good time to buy Mac Pro with display?

    Hi There,
I am thinking to buy Mac Pro with display and I wonder if it’s good time to do that. Displays still waiting for update. We have been waiting for Mac Pro update long and as far as I see the update wasn’t what people generally expected.
And disappointing thing about Blue-ray drive as well. I think it was good time to put one in by Apple.
So do you think its good time to buy all that stuff or wait longer and perhaps better Mac Pro with new display will come out soon?
    Regards

    Rufus wrote:
Um no.. It's more than an "extravagant speed bump," the new Mac Pro is using the new 45nm chip architecture. In addition, the significantly larger cache and faster 800mhz RAM make for drastic performance increase.<</div>
    Um...yes..
and with this new faster processor, I'm to do what with???...open an Excel spreadsheet a nanosecond faster, get a few more fps on Doom3? Woop-tee-do! I now have 8 cores but most software uses 1 of them while the other 7 purr in idle.
BluRay/HD video is here... or should I say HAS BEEN here for over a year now.... how am I going to use this new super-dooper processor with editing, creating, and authoring HD video and discs?
A faster processor at this point is meaningless without the tools to use it with.
All they did with the new MacPro is give you a computer that is worth the fixed $2800 price tag.
Reminds me of the tire commercial on tv where they describe this car with exotic and powerful 12 cylinder engine, and plush leather seats, and race proven suspension...... but with no tires.
It all looks great on a spec sheet, but you can't use it to do any real work.
I can film HD video all day long, but I can't use a Mac to put it on disc...... (but I can use a Dell!!)
There is no way anyone can explain this other than political.... I would bet that this has something to do with Steve's affiliation with Disney and other studios in regards to his doomed movie rental snafu. Apple has always been the ground breaker in bringing such technology to the market first (a mouse, a cd drive, multiple displays, a superdrive, etc.), and usually before the consumer even understands they need it. To be this far behind with BluRay, he's got to be holding back for a reason ... and I would love to hear it.
I've been a Mac user for 22 yrs and have only been embarrised to be so twice... once when the fruit flavored iMacs were introduced (eventually proved to be the best selling computer model of all times), and now with the absence of BluRay. I've been hoping Steve will prove me wrong again, but I've been hoping for year now... and am still waiting.
Um... No, the Mac Pros power isn't gonna do much for an excel spreadsheet.. However, I bought mine to use with Logic Studio which does take advantage of all eight-cores and the faster front side bus and RAM, and the performance is remarkable..
Just for kicks I timed how long it took to rip "Finding Nemo" with my old G4 dual 1.25 ghz using Handbrake's Apple TV preset... The G4 took 7 hours and 54 minutes.. My new Mac Pro did the same job in 24 minutes..
If you really want a Blu-Ray drive in your Mac Pro, then just buy one and stick it in the empty optical slot, but be prepared for the price tag... http://www.mcetech.com/blu-ray/
And if you use one of the Pro apps that takes advantage of multiple cores, the new Mac pro is a dream.. If you don't use one of those apps, you probably don't need a Mac Pro. At any rate, you're whole spiel about the Mac pro's power being trivial or useless is nonsense..

  • Which Mac Pro config for PShop (and others)

Which processor config is best for Pshop multitaskers? Looking to choose a (new) Mac Pro. I am primarily a photo retoucher & photographer (in that order) But I also push my system doing 3D renderings, and often streaming Pandora while I work. Another forum offered suggestions to get the Quad core -and choose the 3.33Ghz 6 core "Westmere" (+ $1200) --as opposed to my first choice, which was the 8 Core w/two 2.4 Ghz "Westmere" processors. My goal is to keep the total cost under $4K -including additional RAM + ATI Radeon HD 5870. I chose the 8 core unit for the added RAM capability, and I thought that 8 cores would help when running multiple apps. But other posters had opined that since most apps -including Pshop (CS5) DON'T take advantage of multiprocessing the faster single processor w/6 cores would take the lead. I am a pro retoucher, and am often working multiple VERY large layered files. I do NOT do animation or video. I am also thinking of waiting for the next Mac Pro update -which past history suggests a possible late spring (2011) rollout. ( I wouldn't want a laptop as I work exclusively at my own studio, and want as much horsepower + longevity as I can afford)
Opinions appreciated -esp. real world tests using CURRENT Mac Pros. Thanks!

Yes, for best memory bandwidth performance, use 8 DIMMs, and it doesn't matter much what your mix and match is (other than certified of course for Mac Pro).
    http://www.barefeats.com/harper3.html
No need to every discard the Apple memory until you get the urge to go to more than 8GB. Buying a full set of same and same time insures that they are less likely to deviate or have enough difference to cause trouble (even Crucial batches vary a bit).
I prefer TechWorks as a cut above, quality is good as it gets, comparable to Micron.

The older Mac Pro was more trouble to get an ideal setup.

  • 2008 Mac Pro 8-core Red Lights-Won't Start

I couldn't get my Mac to wake up and noticed that the monitor wasn't seeing a signal. I shut it down and powered back up. Nothing. Barely any activity inside and no signal to the monitor. I took a photo of the red lights that are on above the RAM risers. I can't see all the writing, but from another image I saw online, those lights are grouped with lines leading back to the word "FAIL." I'm no engineer, but that doesn't sound good. I assume some of those lights are normal since I always see some kind of light in there. I didn't have time yet to pull the RAM chips and start that process. Just wanted to see other opinions
I add a Readeon HD 5870 several months ago, but no issues and the temp has been OK. I'll let you know when I swap RAM out just in case it's not the logic board.

Well, This Mac was bought through Mac Mall since Apple's ship dates kept slipping into forever. Not sure if they did the BTO for 3 Ghz or they just had one in stock. I don't even know what RAM chips are the original ones anymore. They don't always have stickers. I know that 2 of them are original, 2 from work and the other 2 from Crucial.
I went down the list of things to try posted above, but exact same result--only the fans are gently spinning. I tried each matching pair of RAM chips in the first slots. I even tried the system reset button. Tried two different video cards in two slots. I moved my boot drive to a different slot. Squat. Zilch. Nada.
If this Mac worked, it may still be worth up to $1,800 from what I can see online, but I'm guessing a new logic board might be upwards of $700 or so. I will say this Mac has huge number of work hours on it, not like I didn't get my money's worth. Can I tell you how much I wish there was a major Mac Pro update shipping this week!
I can't wait too long to make decision though. Any last thoughts?
Thanks again for all the help by the way.

.. and by the way, the jump from FCP 6.0.3 to FCP 7.0 (or higher) isn't an "update"  It's a full version "upgrade" that has to be done using the install discs (or disc images).
