Mac Pro use a lot of RAM?

Does the new Mac Pros Universal Binary Programs use more RAM than the G5 PowerMac?

Overly simplificatiion.
And for many applications, they would still be compiled with 32-bit switch on, they don't need to address 4GB of memory. The GUI is still really not fully 64-bit even.
But code tricks and methods that worked well for the G4 and limited address space, those don't work as well and code is loaded and compiled differently (or should have been). The lack of L3 hurt some too and took a hit in performance and latency making for lack-luster memory performance sub-par from what was expected, and that could be be curied without moving to a new platform or design.
But the MacPro and G5 do probably need about 1.5GB of RAM to run smoothly, which means you have to install 2GB in the MacPro - just for basic use and needs. While waiting for a 2nd GB to ship from Apple my system was constantly using over 900MB from just casual use (web browsing, word processing, email).
I've never been able to figure out how much Rosetta needs, but it seems that it has its own address space and VM all its own.
With CS3 beta running well already, that was something I'm sure Apple wanted as well as all the users holding off - wouldn't surpise me if a lot of help and pressure was put to bear.

  • Early 2013 13" MacBook Pro runs slow and uses a lot of RAM, why and what can be done?

    Problem description:
My computer is using a lot of RAM. Wondering if there’s a hardware issue, or a software issue, or something else. I currently have no programs open in the Doc, besides EntreCheck. and the RAM is showing about 75% used. I’m looking for suggestions on what I can do to speed it up and make it more functional, and efficient for doing design work. I recently upgraded from the original 4GB RAM (2x2GB), and from the original HD to a 512 GB SSD drive, and upgraded to Yosemite. Perhaps that was too much for this machine? Please help with anything that I can do to make it better! Thanks in advance!
I have a recent back-up, I'm open to saving user files and starting from scratch with the current hardware, etc... but would need some direction on how to do this. I did upgrade myself using Apple provided instructions.
    Here are the EntreCheck results:

Here's the new EtreCheck that I just ran. At a glance, it seems I may have missed deleting some things or they are stored in an additional location? I haven't jumped into anything yet to really test if there's a difference in performance for me. Once I do I will post that information.

  • MAC PRO 2.66, XT1900 & 3GB RAM for Aperture?

    Hi,
I have read a lot of post about the performance of Aperture and CS2 and budget-wise I am thinking in buying a MAC PRO 2.66, XT1900 & 3GB RAM.
Will this configuration be OK to work with Aperture and CS2?
I shoot primary weedings using 8MP Canon RAW files.
    Thanks

I have this exact same setup, powering a 24" Dell and a 23" apple monitor - but with 4 gigs of RAM as the previous post suggests. It's awesome (I'm opening 10 mp Nikon NEFs on mine, FWIW).
I initially started with 2 gigs of RAM, and that was miserable in more ways than one. After 4 gigs of RAM, Aperture ran much better...but still not snappy. Following the advice of others in this forum, I got the ATI card you are considering, and it has made a world of difference.
This speed is addicting, however. Now I'm pondering, incredibly, "What ELSE can I add to the mix to make it even FASTER." I've read that some have success with faster drives. Others recommend even more RAM. I might try more RAM down the road, but then again I push the machine in other ways (lots of Rosetta apps, a Parallels instance of XP, etc). Still, nothing really ever feels slow.

  • My Mac Pro makes a lot loud of processing noise

My Mac Pro makes a lot of loud clicking processing noise for simple procedures like surfing or using finder. Bought in 2006, the problems I think started after an upgrade to Snow leopard this year. Any help???

Although it is often refered to as "Number Crunching" computation does not actaully make any loud noises.
A failing Hard Drive does. Are your backups up-to-date?

Assuming you have these accounts set up in Mail, open preferences and under Accounts tab, edit the SMTP outgoing server list. Do you have a .mac address in the list? If so, delete it.
    Are you using iCloud?
For the troubled account, select the correct SMTP server for that account in the box and check the box to use only that server with that account.

  • I have a Mac Pro using Lion, with a SSD for system.  Restored drive from backup.  Now logon password doesn't work.  Account password still works.  Changing password in user group preferences no longer works to change logon password.

I have a Mac Pro using Lion, with SSD for system drive.  Drive stopped booting, but otherwise appeared healthy.  Restored from system backup.  Now drive seems to work properly, BUT my logon password no longer works.  Password OK for account; can access system preferences, and change user password there BUT logon still refuses to accept password.  No luck changing password for that account after adding new administrator account and logging on from that account.  Suggestions?  Thanks.

If you redirect Accounts to another location (not on the Boot Drive) you need to direct them back there again after a restore.
    SystemPreferences > Accounts/User&Groups > ...
... Unlock the lock, then hold down Control as you click on an Account to get access to the Advanced Options pane.

  • Mac Pro using Mac Mini as Print Server

    Hi all,
Mac Pro is wired to my network, Mac Mini is Airport connected.
I'd like to use Mac Mini as a Print Server without keyboard and mouse. I've installed OSXvnc-server on Mac Mini and Chicken of the VNC (CVNC) Client on Mac Pro.
Mac Pro's keyboard is azerty as was Mac Mini, it's impossible to loggin with Chicken of the VNC, password is not accepted, I connect an azerty keyboard to Mac Mini and I can loggin.
Typing on Mac Pro in Mac Mini TextEdit through CVNC give weird keyboard layout, not only azerty qwerty different layout.
In between my two Mac Mini there wasn't any problem using CVNC and the same server but Azerty Qwerty layout.
Is there any other solution to use Mac Mini as a print server ? What about using Desktop remote connection ?
    Thanks,
    Peloche,
    MacPro 2.66, 6GB, 1TB; Mini G4, 1.45, 1GB; iPod 60 GB; 30" & 20" ACD; Apple IIC   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Ah… right! That explains it.
So what model printers are they?
    Ned,
Printers are HP Color LaserJet 2550L, HP Photosmart 8250 and Epson EPL-5900L.
I've changed the VNC Client from "Chicken of the VNC" to "VNCThing".
Now I can log in from Mac Pro using its Azerty Keyboard as Qwerty Keyboard.
Once logged in I've set Mac Mini Keyboard to "Extended (or Expanded ?) American" keyboard within System Preferences, with this option Mac Mini see the Mac Pro Keyboard as an Azerty layout...
I've connected two printers through USB2 Hub connected to Mac Mini and the third one direct onto Mac Mini USB port.
Back to Mac Pro "System Preferences Fax & Printers", "+", immediatly the 3 printers have been proposed, I've selected them and tested all: it works perfectly.
Mac Mini is set to "restart after power cut" and is connected for power onto a remoted control power distribution sockets, that means Mac Mini is starting and stopped when printers are powered on and off.
The sole small issue is that I can't find how to display Mac Mini GUI on Mac Pro at a better resolution than 1024 x 768.
    Thanks for your time,
    Peloche,

  • Xorg.bin use a lot of ram Catalyst

Hello! After installing catalyst from Violo's repo i have noticed that Xorg.bin use a lot of ram(when i start the laptop it is 25mb but it keep rising till it get to 1.5gb in about 2h and I restart to free memory) This is on X-server 1.7 and now i downgrade to 1.16.4 but no effect. Can someone help me please. Thank you!

elll wrote:Do you know how to downgrade catalyst? Should i use pacman -U catalyst? [link]https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Do … s#Warnings[/link] And if yes do i have to downgrade Xorg too because i allready do that?
The nicer way to do this is to use the [catalyst-stable-14.X] repository databases in this manner (where you replace X with the corresponding number):
    [catalyst-stable-14.X]
    Server = http://catalyst.wirephire.com/repo/catalyst/$arch

No idea. Ask the AMD Developers upstream.

  • Can you boot a Mac Pro using a USB Pen Drive?

    Hello.
Can you boot a Mac Pro using a USB Pen Drive? OS=Windows or Linux or BSD or MacOS... I know it is bios specific on a PC if the option is available. If this is possible, does anyone have a link to instructions?
    Thanks,
    Scott

Not to get in to an argument over semantics here, but by saying "Windows should boot if you have installed the requisite Boot Camp drivers," you are implying "that the Boot Camp drivers [are] needed for Windows to boot." I was just clarifying your post so people didn't get confused.
As for booting a Mac Pro off a USB flash drive, if you have been successful in doing so, can you share with me your method? I've tried booting of an OCZ Rally2 4GB flash drive and it's never worked on my Mac Pro. It doesn't show up when I hold option down and if I try to boot through rEFIt, I get an error about my Mac's firmware not supporting USB booting (I have the latest firmware installed, too). I've tried GPT and MBR partitions, both to no avail. Booting off USB hard disk drives is no problem though. And I can boot off this flash drive on a Core Duo iMac.
    Any ideas?

I can't transfer my files from my Power Mac G5 to my Mac Pro using firewire connections. Has anyone else had this issue?

Don't choose from another Computer, because with the older one in Target mode it really isn't a Computer, just a big Firewire Drive, choose From another Disk...

  • Why is my macbook pro is still using a lot of RAM?

I have a Macbook pro 15" (mid 2012) 2.6 GHz and with 16gb RAM and was wondering why my macbook pro still processes and uses over 9GB of ram when I'm not even having  Lightroom, Photoshop, and Illustrator in effect yet.

It's not a memory leak, see the references to learn more about how RAM is utilized to speed up the Mac.

  • How many watts does a Mac Pro use?

I have a 2007 Mac Pro2,1 with drives in all 4 slots and 8 GB of RAM
I scoured over Apple's Tech Specs and not a word about wattage use.
Anyone know for sure the wattage? I bought a device
you plug into and got around 425 watts, but I am looking for confirmation
in order to buy the right battery backup system.
BTW, I even spoke to Apple tech support just now and they not only didn't
know, but didn't have any resource to look up wattage.
Why is this vital info so obscure?

I wrote this thread from work with my wattage from memory. Here's the breakdown now that I'm home:
    Mac Pro - average 250W
    HP 30" monitor - 75W
    Apple Cinema 22": 57W
Since my problem is in this new (pre war NY) apartment, all the outlets are on the same circuit breaker, blowing it is easy if I turn on both ACs while running the computer. Never had this problem in a more modern home with newer wiring. Hence never had a UPS, even though a good idea. I was gambling. Those days are over.
I bought the APC 1500 which turns out to be over kill (almost 900 watts), but more importantly found that the surge outlets always pass through power, so I can't use the APC to cut all power to all my devices when I shut it off during the day while at work. The CyberPower does. Off is off to all outlets. I'm returning the APC because it's more than I need and I want off to be off.
I was going to get the CyberPower 1000 with 600 watts, but while my current needs might not be more than 600W or need sine wave technology, I will someday get a new computer that may possibly need it, so I decided to get their sine wave which was cheap at Amazon and went for their 1350 with 810 watts which is double my needs now, but only about $40 more than the 1000 so you get a lot more wattage for your dollar which I may need in the future. Plus I'll have more run time, if needed.
It took awhile to get to this decision, but I'm happy with it and look forward to it's arrival. Thanks everyone for your input!

  • Need advice on what Mac Pro to purchase/how much ram

Hi.. this is my first post...
I have been a Logic user for--15 years??-- and love the program. I have been using only pcs and now have to switch to Mac because, well..... we all know why....
    Here's my question....
With a certain amount of cash to spend ( using Logic pro/ express ), and a lot of audio samples to crunch, am I better off::::
1.---buying the more expensive 3.0 ghz Mac pro with, say, 3 gigs of ram or,
2.---buying the cheaper 2.7 ghz Mac pro and use the savings to load up with more ram memory?
I lean towards the #2 just because 'they' say more ram is good. Up to now all my pc's were just stock and they ran, more or less, fine with few problems. Mind you, I was using midi exclusively..no audio files at all.
I will be recording only one live instrument ( a flugelhorn---brass instrument ) so that's about it!!
    Any guidance would be appreciated..
    Thanks all

Well, the old computer saying goes, "buy the fastest computer you can afford, at that time"... or something like that...
That being said, a new 2.7 Mac Pro ain't a shabby beast, by anyones standards.
3 gigs of RAM is pretty good... for now. But in anticipation of the new OS Leopard, and the inevitable rewriting of Logic that will take place (or is currently in progress), to allow it to access more than 4 gigs of RAM... more RAM wouldn't hurt either. You'd be putting yourself in a position to be able to take advantage of those advancements, when they occur.
So, my 2 cents is with you... a 2.7 Mac Pro with more RAM (maybe 6 to 8 gigs worth...? ) looks quite nice.
