Mac Pro user Reports/Tests on FB-Dimms from a post on xlr8yourmac.com, helpful and interesting info:

William

So I purchased 4 1GB Kingston FB Dimms and I have been running them for about 72 hours straight (not constantly testing or anything, just normal leave the computer on bit torrent etc, stuff). And for the first 2 days I was checking the system profiler religiously all running at 667, no EEC errors. But tonight I decided to check and slot 1 of riser card 2 is reporting like 4000 or more EEC errors.
I shut down, opened up, removed riser card, reseated module in question and booted back up. Checked and it reported all at 667 no EEC errors. Then I ran "Remember.app" and within 2 min it was erroring out all over the place and I checked system profiler to find 6000 EEC errors on slot 1 riser 2.
What is going on here? All the other modules seem to be running fine, no EEC errors reported ever. Do I have 1 bum stick of RAM? Are EEC errors grounds for a replacement? I bought this from newegg and I think I can only exchange if they are defective - are EEC errors considered a defect?
Thanks guys!
PS my 2x512's are sitting on my desk - I have been running the machine for 72 hours with ONLY the kingston ram (same model and everything as controller2k - he gave me the idea to buy it

Is the July 9 internet issue a problem for Mac Pro users or has Apple taken care of this issue in updates?

It is a only a problem for users affected by the malware that replaces their DNS IPs on their macs. They already have a serious problem which they should fix. Follow the url in sig's post to determine if you are infected and how to remove it.

  • Calling Australian Mac Pro users

    Hi
I am currently based in the UK and am a mac pro user about to emigrate. When I bought my pro they said the world kit would cover the plug difference, to be honest I seem to remember the product description saying so.
Now the world kit doesnt support the pro it seems and apple online have been rather unhelpful. Buy a new cable out there was the stock answer.
Any of you guys know If I can indeed buy a cable and where from .....google has proved fruitless.
    Thanks in advance

  • Apple Treats Mac Pro Users Third-class Customers

I have been disappointed by the fact that the latest ATI Radeon 4870 devoid of compatibility for the Mac Pros manufactured in 2006/7.
However, for once I thought it was a good news for a Mac Pro user like me when nVidia announced they will be releasing the GeForce GTX 285 for Mac Pro in June, only to be extremely disappointed that the upgrade again precludes the 1st generation Mac Pro.
So this is how Apple-nVidia/ATI pact treats its Pro customers...? Third-class...?

So Intel stopped production of the 5300-series Xeon. They needed to put their resources (R*D and everything else) into new Core i7 / Nehalem. That doesn't make any business sense.
DDR3 has a lot of advantages and improvements. Less heat and lower power requirements, "greener" than those slower hot high-latency FBDIMMs.
EFI64, or UEFI, wasn't finalized until 2008, so Intel wasn't ready with 64-bit EFI either.
Today's systems will help build tomorrow's OS and applications, same as last year's.
Poor Quad G5. It's life was over 6 months after it left the factory.
If yours can run Tiger, there is a good market. I could sell mine for half, and buy a 2008 and come out pretty much ahead of the game, with nearly 3 yrs use.
Graphics may have its best year ever, and I'm sure someone will conjure how to make it work, so if you really must have GTX285 and run Mac Pro 3,1 rather than build a $1800 PC, you can.
Upgrading graphics has always been very limited. Adding RAM and disk drives, and being able to add PCI storage as such is what it was sold as, and no one said that three yrs later a 1st gen could run things that didn't yet exist.

  • Mac Pro not reporting memory amount correctly - please help

    Hi all,
    I have recently purchased an additonal 2 x 4GB Crucial DDR2 FB-DIMM 667Mhz sticks for my Mac Pro Dual Core Intel Xeon 2 x 2.66GHz computer.  I have installed these correctly to Riser A 3+4 alongside 2 x 512MB Kingston sticks in Riser A 1+2, and 2 x 2GB Kingston sticks in Riser B 1+2.
I am seeing now that instead of the 13GB I should have showing in system profiler (which I initially saw after installation of the Crucial sticks), I am seeing 11GB.  The two 2GB Kingston sticks are both showing incorrectly as 1GB.
Can anyone help with regards what I should do to check if it's a Riser problem or the two sticks, etc...  I've ran a memory scan with TechTool Pro 5 and that came back fine, though for 11GB Ram and not the actual 13GB I should have/see.
I'm going to call Crucial and my local retailer tomorrow where I got the Kingston Ram pre-installed on purchase of the Mac, and that Kingston has a life-time warrenty anyway, but still I'd like to try and resolve this and look into the issue further myself too.
Please can someone kindly advise me what steps to take, I'd really appreciate it.
    Cheers,
    Ash

My advice, over the 5+ yrs Mac Pro memory:
    Try with just the Crucial.
Remove the pair of 512s - doesn't add much
having 6 DIMMs is WORST config
    best is 4 DIMMs matched quad set: 4 x 2GB or 4 x 4GB.
the smaller DIMMs should go down to 3/4.
Forget TTPro to test RAM. Use AHT yes but "no errors" usually means Riser is okay and mechanically the DIMMs are okay but might need more.
However, it is next to impossible to say for certain, and you can always find mixing brands or batches same can be a problem.
I would not say "correct" though.
    correctly to Riser A 3+4 alongside 2 x 512MB Kingston sticks in Riser A 1+2, and 2 x 2GB Kingston sticks in Riser B 1+2.
High density or largest in DIMM slots 1 & 2
Sometimes a configuration works that doesn't make total sense, like all the 4 x 2GB all on Riser A.
    Riser A: 2 x 4GB
    Riser B: 2 x 2GB

  • How can i share microsoft office 2011 with my mac pro users

I recently purchased a mac pro and downloaded microsoft office but want to know how to share with other users on my mac.

It sounds like you installOffice in the Library folder in your account which limits the use of Office to your account.
If you would have installed it in the Library at root then everyone on the Mac can use it.
Not be a user of Office, I think you will have to uninstall it and then reinstall it correctly in the Library folder at root.

  • Older Mac Pro users beware of Mountain Lion upgrade

I work at a company where we have 6 edit suites. Five of those suites are still running Mac Pros; three of them are Early 2008 models, two are Early 2009 models. All of these suites have 30" monitors in them running at 2560 x 1600 resolution. The other suite has a new 27" iMac. All but one of the Mac Pros have their original graphics cards.
When Mountain Lion first came out, I upgraded my Mac mini at home that has FCP7 and FCPX installed on it. Both applications ran fine and I was able to edit a project in FCPX with no problem. A co-worker who works remotely on a 27" iMac had also upgraded his machine and experienced no issues.
Seeing no issues with the ability to run FCP7 under Mountain Lion, I proceeded with upgrading the MacPro suites at our office. After an initial test on one machine to confirm that FCP7 would load and launch projects, I proceeded to upgrade the remaining suites. It soon became apparent after other editors began to use their computers that FCP6 and 7 were affected by the upgrade to Mountain Lion.
While the programs still work fine, one fundamental change that Apple has made in Mountain Lion is to push more of the responsibility for displaying the image on the computer monitor to the GPU of the graphics card. Previously these responsibilities were shared with the CPU. Therefore, if you have an older graphics card (even if it is fully compatible with FCPX, as ours are), FCP6/7 has a difficult time playing back 1080 video in the Canvas window (at any size), without breaking up when there is some degree of movement in the video image. The screen cannot refresh quickly enough to draw the video image without showing horizontal banding and some minor digital garbage.
Rest assured that the render files are clean and the output file will be fine. Once exported, a self-contained .mov file will playback fine in Quicktime, showing no banding where there previously was banding when viewed in FCP. This is an issue with display only. If you can live with it, fine. But it is rather distracting while editing.
I attempted to downgrade one of the Mac Pros to Lion earlier today. While I was able to successfully downgrade (not with a clean install, but another method), both FCP7 and FCPX would no longer launch because they were confused about which version of the OS was running. Using FCS Remover, I deleted both FCP7 and X, then reinstalled FCP7. Still no luck with launching FCP7. I finally decided to reinstall Mountain Lion for the time-being. FCP7 now launches again.
Just a warning to those considering upgrading that you may experience performance issues with FCP6/7 if you are using an older Mac Pro and trying to edit 1080 footage. You may have to upgrade your graphics card to achieve best performance.

    Christian Castagna1 wrote:
Yes, we previously we had purchased an ATI Radeon 5770 to enable use of FCPX, and 1080 video plays fine through that in both Early 2008 and Early 2009 models, although it is not fully compatible with those computers. Technically it is only compatible with Mid 2010 Mac Pros. It is unclear if there is a card that is fully compatible with Early 2008 computers and FCPX at this point.
We have noticed some small pixelation around the edges of icons with the 5770 in an Early 2008, but that is intermittent and goes away with a restart. We have not noticed any issues in the Early 2009. We have also just purchased a Radeon 5870 and will be testing that in Early 2008 models to see if the same pixelation issue happens. We will install that card eventually in an Early 2009 computer because it is fully compatible with that machine.
If nothing else, hopefully these graphics cards buy us a couple more years with our Mac Pros.
Can you explain a little more about this please...  My primary system is a 2008 8X 3.2GHz system with a ATI Radeon 5770 and I have it running two 27" Samsung monitors and a 37" HDTV (all 1080p) on FCS3. None of the displays have any artifacts under any conditions. What are the compatibility issues? If I'm doing a no-no, I want to know before my next big project...

  • 64 bits question for mac pro users

    Hi,
I am actually in the process of buying a new Mac Pro and I would like to know if someone here could help me to understand what's going on with the 64 bits mode thing on the mac pro.
I have a mac pro 1,1. Now I am using SL, but ML is out for a while. I use Logic 9 and most of my plugins supports the 64 bits mode, but I am sticked to the 32 bits mode.
First question: Is it right to think that going for 64 bits mode computer now will greatly improve the performances and internal memory management on Logic in 64 bits mode with plugins in 64 bits mode?
Second question: Looking at the wiki page for the mac pro (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mac_Pro#Specifications), I understand that the 5,1 model is fully 64 bits compatible, but what about the 3,1 and 4,1 models? Are they fully 64 bits compatible if they are upgraded to ML? Why is the kernel not 64 bits?
I would like to buy a used mac pro, which would fit better in my budget right now. But, I am looking for better performances and a 64 bits mode of operation, and these are my priorities right now.
Thanks for your time to help me.
    Martin

    Yes. And no.
Use all 8 DIMM slots. Result = 17% boost over not.
Use 667MHz 2GB DIMMs = 4% slower (not noticed real world, Barefeats also).
    Yes you can't use 8GB DDR3 etc.
I thnk that the issues wtih ML and Lion, the issue witrh some PCIe cards not working, not being bootable, and that it was the first to try to implement the new EFI and SMC in 3 yrs - are bigger issues.
And the cost of system even now is too high without taking into account: RAM, will I need to upgrade the video card it came with? before I can use it.
Yes. Penny wise and pound foolish over 4 yrs old model now (will turn 5 in February) and was first booted by Intel in November 2007.

  • CPU Upgrade - new Mac Pro user

    I just bought the new 8-core 2.26
Just a question of curiosity (maybe for my future upgrade)
can I put these into my Mac Pro?

also does any of this Graphic Cards work under Mac OS X?
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH &Description=4870&x=0&y=0
I currently have the GT 120. I mostly do 3D modeling and this graphic card seems to do just fine. What I need is fast rendering and the 8-core seems to do the job very well. Now, I just need a graphic card to play game (mostly in Boot Camp of course). But I don't want to switch graphic card just to play game and then switch back to do work (in mac os X).
    thanks

Pricing has always been a huge sticking point. Last year Apple charged $500 more for the dual cpu configuration while the cost of adding one later retail was and remained about $900. This year the prices look more like this:
    http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/cpu/display/20081118082708Intel_to_Initiate_Shipments_of_Nehalem_Processors_Early_NextYear.html
Surprised you didn't get the Radeon 4870 as $200 BTO option (costs more now to do yourself) and a 1-2GB version seems like it would make a nice offering, now that Nvidia FX cards are MIA.
I would rather get the PC 1Gb 4870 or 4870x2 then flash it for OS X. My current GT 120 is taking care my 3D workflow perfectly now, I wouldn't ask for more. I'm not a gamer, I only play games once in a while when I get stressed out.
It's nice to have a good graphic card handy just to test out new games.

  • Are the new displays for MacBooks only - Options for a Mac Pro User?

I am currently running 23 inch displays in our small design studio (4 workstations). I need a new or a second display for my own Mac Pro. I hate the new 24 inch display. I cannot imagine running Final Cut Studio on this glossy screen. So is anyone else out there in this situation? Looking for other choices? I want to stay in the Apple line up if possible but now I am even looking at Dells, as I feel Apple will only continue with the glossy screens.
Are any pro-users in video or photography using the new 24 inch displays? and I mean users who do this for a living. Thanks everyone?

    Hello!
Sorry it took a while to notice your post. There are two options for your mac pro to use the new 24 inch cinema display. The ATI Radeon 4870 HD has the mini-display port on it, and the Nvidia GT120 also is an option. Personally, I'd go with the 4870 as its a much better graphics card.
You can find them on the Apple store's site under DISPLAYS/Graphics
    Hope this helps.
Now, just to clear something up. If you have a 2008 mac pro, you can run the GT120 if you prefer.

What are the error messages you are receiving, and/or what is the issue you are having?  I am on a MacPro wuth the GTX285 and I am also having tons of issues.  There are a few threads going now with mac users and CS6 problems.  Can you describe what is happening?

  • Happy Mac Pro User

    Hallo all
I just unboxed my new MacPro 3.0GHz/8GB, Nvidia 8800GT.
After installing from DVD (without languages and all printers), I performed all
Leopard updates and installed firefox and a few other things.
So far everything is great. I have an Airport Extreme including a USB Disk,
wireless keyboard and mouse. Bluetooth works, Airport works including
    automatically joing my network.
I am right now copying lots of stuff from my Linux server ...
No Time Machine right now, but I'll try later.
Thanks to all the people who helped distracting myself from the long delivery delay,
I'll keep you updated, it's 0:45 AM right now.
If anyone wants me to try something, just drop me a line.
This is just a short heads-up to all people in this forum.
    Sorry for the noise.
    Cheers

Just a sidenote: You can partition your drives before installation.
If you boot from DVD, don't click continue but start Disk Utility from
    the menu.
The Leopard ServerAdmin Tools are freely available on Apple's website, too.
You can use the Workgroup Manager to have fine-grained control over Users, Groups and location of home directories.
I use it to cofigure my Linux NFS server by creating a network group.
This is extremly useful if you need to assign fixed user ID's when creating accounts.
As far as Applications go: I just create a seperate applications folder on my RAID1 and put them there.
    Regards
PS: I am still not used to the Wireless keyboard, Apple should really redesign it

  • Mac Pro kernal panics

I have a Mac Pro (2.66 Quad Core) with 4 x 2GB here that is intermittently kernal panicing.
The kernal panics occur within around 8-12 hours with no applications running, however running the CPU at max. I haven't tested for an extended amount of time without the CPU running high as of yet.
OS has been freshly installed and all updates performed.
I was mostly wondering whether anything can be determined from the kernal panic logs:

From the kernel panic type, and the log, it appears to be RAM related.

  • Does anyone have two 24" LED Cinema Displays on their Mac Pro?

I'm wondering if there are any other Mac Pro users out there with two 24" LED Cinema Displays? If so, are you able to adjust the brightness of both displays? For me, no matter which brightness slider I adjust in System Preferences, only the brightness of one of the displays is adjusted.
I originally created a thread last September:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2160532
If you have this problem too, please report it to <http://bugreporter.apple.com/>. My original Radar bug was #7222745, and it was found to be a duplicate of #6828443. Based on the IDs, I'd say this has been a known issue for at least a year.
    Thanks,
    Patrick

I am using logitech G19 mouse and Naga Razer Epic, my current suspect that is their official driver which make my OS X 64bit kernl go nut. Does Logitech Control Center work for later version of their products such as G19?
If I plggued in the G19 without installing their official gamepanel software, The heyboard still work, volume control slider works like a charm. I just get no advantages from the LCD screen (kind of pointless).
If I install the razer mac driver, I keep seeing error log in console for the kzcorengineand razercorenginer process.
Idid clean install of Mac OS X and have not experienced freeze except once when I was plugging in my 500gb transcend external drive. This Ext. Drive require two usb slot for power and transfer data.
I am not sure if the freeze was coincidental or related to the transcend external drive I used. I did a directory permission repair and a repair to the mac drive, how things seems to stabilised.
However I want to take my test further to install office 2011 to see if it cause those random unpredictable freeze again.
Sigh, I paid $200 for such a good keyboard, but they have bad apple support. I dont like the apply ketyboard and magic mouse. It's immpossible to touch type on and even harder to play any game at all.
Wayne, when you use your logitech product, do you install the product specific driver for each product plus LCC? or you just install LCC.
    Thank you
