Mac Pro very slow with NAS (network attached storage) after OSX Update

*Hello,*
**I seem to have a rather unknown problem because after hours of google'ing I found nothing.**
**I'm working on a late 2008 Mac Pro with the 8 core Nehalem processor and 12 gigs of ram and some other hardware like a Blackmagic Decklink HD extreme.**
**(If you care to know the exact specs I can gives those to you, but right now I'm degrading the Mac Pro to 10.6.0.)**
**The Mac Pro connects via an ethernet cable > ethernet breakout > directly to an Mac Pro G5 PPC on a CAT5.E ethernet cable.**
**This G5 is running leopard and has our hard drives and RAID connected to it of which we work on our Mac Pro 2008. Normally this gives us the ability to read with over 100 mb/s and write at about 70 mb/s (Blackmagic diskspeed test).**
**But recently our drives got really, really slow. It wouldn't even play PAL footage realtime in our Final Cut timeline.**
**But as we downgrade to 10.6.0 this problem is gone. So we think that when we upgrade to 10.6.5, the problem initiates.**
**How does this happen and, more importantly, how do we get rid of this?!**
**Good to know; our 27" iMac or any other device in this building _does not have_ this problem. It's just the Mac Pro after an update.**
**Please help us out.**
**Kind regards,**
*W.*

I have the same problem with any mac that has 10.6.  On macs that I can go back to 10.5 on they work fine and fast.  I install a used system at a client and that CPU is new enough to not be able to revert to 10.5 and their NAS is so slow that it is unless. So it's Apple's problem, they broke the protocol for NAS in 10.6 and will not fix it.  My clients don't want to make the Move to 10.7 at this time,I am not eve sure if NAS will work well with 10.7 and I think Apple has to rethink its policy of forces us to upgrade to the lastest OS to get their problems fixed.  Fix 10.6 to NAS protocol.
Maybe we don't need major system upgrades every year..  Fix the current system before you give us more problems with a major OS upgrade.
Now I might sound tainted, but I have been an Apple person since the first, Apple II came to market.. I sold many of them.  So lets not go back to Apple 1980's when they couldn't get anything right..  They may be all powerful, now but they need to remember when there were rumors of them being sold and the stock sold for $11.00 a share.
I have searched for a fix, and many forums have stated the problem, but I just can't figure why they haven't relized that Apple mess up the protocol in 10.6.  Its simple, everything works fine on 10.5 they forced us to upgrade to 10.6 and it's broke.  go back to 10.5 and it's fixed.  So logic states that Apple's 10.6 is different when it comes to NAS protocols...  Simple...  Fix go back to 10.5  Real fix..   Apple needs to fix it with a patch to 10.6
I have no problems with someone proving me wrong that it works fine, in 10.5 and is broken, very slow in 10.6..

  • Using Aperture with a Network Attached Storage (NAS)

    Hi,
I would like to make my Aperture library accessible from severals Macs and for different users on these Macs --- not at the same time. The idea is that only one user from one Mac can use Aperture at a given time.
The basic idea is to install the Aperture library on a Network Attached Storage (NAS) --- either will all photos included or with all photos stored in a separated folder structure --- next to the library ("externally referenced masters").
The NAS I am planning to use is a QNAP TS 239 Pro II+, which will be attached to a Gigabit Ethernet network (to which all Macs are connected too). Following the reviews, the QNAP should be capable to deliver a read/write performance in the order of 70 Mb/s ... hence performance-wise there should be no problem.
I've read through various forums and found many messages telling that using Aperture with a NAS is not possible or at least not a good idea. The posts in the forum were partially a bit confusing; people were telling contradictory things. I also had the impression that the answers depend on the actual version of Aperture. Apple itself put in the release notes of Aperture 3.1.1 about Vaults: "Fixes an issue that could sometimes cause Aperture on a computer with Mac OS X v10.5.8 Leopard to stop responding while updating a vault stored on a network volume." Hence, it seems that Aperture 3.1.1 can work with a NAS ... at least it can use vaults that are stored on a NAS. On the other hand, it's exactly the topic of vaults where many people say that this does not work with a NAS ...
To clarify things, I try to get some clear and competent answers here. The questions are:
Can one store and use the Aperture library on a NAS (whose disk is formatted using a UNIX file system, e.g. EXT4) ?
If yes, does this work in both configurations: (a) with a library containing the masters, and (b) with a library with externally referenced masters (that are also located on the NAS) ?
If a user on a given Mac on the network has opened Aperture (and thus the library on the NAS), is this library the blocked for other users ? (That should ideally be the case.)
If it is NOT possible to use an Aperture library on the NAS, is it then possible to store it on an external, HFS+ formatted drive connected to the NAS via USB ? (QNAP allows to format its external drives with HFS+).
I know that putting everything on an iSCSI target volume on the NAS is a solution, but is iSCSCI properly working under OS X (10.6). I read that one has to install an iSCSI Initiator software first ... which is not from Apple itself.
What about Vaults: According to the Aperture 3.1.1 release notes, it seems to be possible to use vaults on a NAS ... is this really the case ?
Is usage of Aperture on a NAS depending on the file protocol used to transfer the data ? I read also that if one uses the AFP protocol (supported in a QNAP NAS) then everything's fine ... Is this the case ?
Thanks a lot in advance for any clear and correct answer!
    Rainer

Can one store and use the Aperture library on a NAS (whose disk is formatted using a UNIX file system, e.g. EXT4) ?
Not reliably, no. You will encounter issues. You could use Mac OS X disk images on the server, mount them on a client, and work that way. Note only one machine can mount the disk image at a time.
If yes, does this work in both configurations: (a) with a library containing the masters, and (b) with a library with externally referenced masters (that are also located on the NAS) ?
    (a) no (b) no.
If a user on a given Mac on the network has opened Aperture (and thus the library on the NAS), is this library the blocked for other users ? (That should ideally be the case.)
Aperture does no locking. There is a very high likelihood you will corrupt the library if you do this.
If it is NOT possible to use an Aperture library on the NAS, is it then possible to store it on an external, HFS+ formatted drive connected to the NAS via USB ? (QNAP allows to format its external drives with HFS+).
How would you be accessing it then? If it's over a file protocol (SMB or NFS or ...) it likely won't work.
I know that putting everything on an iSCSI target volume on the NAS is a solution, but is iSCSCI properly working under OS X (10.6). I read that one has to install an iSCSI Initiator software first ... which is not from Apple itself.
Right. There is no Apple-provided iSCSI initator. I don't know how well 3rd party initators work.
What about Vaults: According to the Aperture 3.1.1 release notes, it seems to be possible to use vaults on a NAS ... is this really the case ?
I've done vaults reliably for years using a Mac OS X disk image stored on the NAS, that I mount before backing up. I wouldn't do it "naked" (i.e. stored directly on the NAS).
Is usage of Aperture on a NAS depending on the file protocol used to transfer the data ? I read also that if one uses the AFP protocol (supported in a QNAP NAS) then everything's fine ... Is this the case ?
AFP might have a better chance than other protocols but... frankly... it's a bad idea. If you MUST share a library across many machines, use something like a Promise DS4600 (direct attached) and plug it into a machine when you're using it.

  • Using Time Machine with a Network Attached Storage (NAS) device

I have a Mac household (20" iMac, MacBook Pro and MacBook) all connecting to the internet, wireless printer and a Network Attached Storage (NAS) device via the "n" version AirPort Extreme.
All software / firmware is up-to-date on all machines / devices.
Everything works great through the AirPort, but I can't see the NAS in the Time Machine setup. How do I get Time Machine to make backups of each of my machines to the NAS?

TM backups to NAS are not officially supported. There are some hacks to make it work but you'll be on your own if you use them. check out this [Mac os x hint|http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20080420211034137&query=time% 2Bmachine%2Bafp]. make sure you read all the caveats and comments.

  • Airport Extreme and NAS (Network Attached Storage)

I am using a brand new AirPort Extreme (ver. 7.4.2) connected to a Motorola cable modem, with two different MacBooks running Snow Leopard, two AirPort Express units for distributing music wirelessly around the house, and an HP multifunction printer connected to the Extreme via USB, all of which works fine.
But I recently purchased a 1TB Iomega Home Media network attached storage device (NAS), which is connected to the Extreme via ethernet cable, and I can't get the Extreme or either MacBook to recognize the NAS drive. The NAS doesn't "mount" on the desktop like a USB external drive would. It doesn't appear under "Shared" in Finder. It doesn't appear in AirPort Utility under "AirPort disks". Oddly enough the only place where the NAS does appear is in iTunes under "Shared"!
I know that the NAS device is functioning properly because my IT guy tested it at the office, connected to his PC, and it worked fine. The NAS came with Iomega "Home Storage Manager" software, which I installed but it's pretty useless because it also can't "find" the NAS and only offers to re-scan for it.
Much to my surprise there is very little information about troubleshooting NAS storage with the Extreme, either on the Support forums or in the "Apple Airport Networks" document published by Apple in early 2009.
I would greatly appreciate any guidance!
    Thanks in advance,
    MG

Thanks to both of you for your input. The Iomega NAS (Home Media Network Hard Drive is the model) comes ready out of the box for use with either PC or Mac.
Actually I resolved the problem by going to Iomega's tech support page. I needed to download an updated version of the Home Storage Manager software as well as 2 firmware updates to the NAS drive itself; so that it would be compatible with Snow Leopard. That was the issue. Now it appears to be working just fine.
    Thanks again & happy holidays.

  • Mac Pro running slow with FCP...

Hi, I have a Mac Pro OS 10.5.8
    FCP version 6.0.1
I've had the computer about 8 months and edited roughly 45 hours of footage on it so far. I use an external hard drive as my scratch disk capacity 931 GB (359 GB available).
About a month ago I started working on audio editing with Soundtrack pro and the computer started doing a lot of thinking and subsequent crashing. Now it seems I can't upload clips any longer than 4 or 5 minutes without FCP crashing and loosing the clip I was trying to upload.
I tried calling Applecare and did an archive and install. I did the software updates. What are the next avenues I should try in order to get my computer up to speed.
I paid a decent amount for the computer, I would expect it be able to handle this type of workload. Any suggestions? Thanks so much!

Have you tried trashing prefs and repairing permissions? It could help.

  • Mac pro very slow

My 15" Mac Pro has begun running very slowly.  I get the spinning beachball "wait" icon even when I am performing the simple (low CPU demand) of tasks.
I have not changed the RAM or any other hardware component, nor had I added any major software.
    Any clues?

  • Can't copy with LaCie Network Attached Storage and Time Capsule/Airport

    Hi,
I bought a Time Capsule to replace my recently faulty modem/router Linksys AG241 and in preparation of buying my first mac in the next few months.
Right now the network is as follows:
    — 1 Linksys AM200 modem connected to the TC by ethernet and set to bridge mode
    — 2 windowsXP pcs attached by ethernet to the Time Capsule
    — 1 NAS (LaCie 2Big Network) attached by ethernet to the Time Capsule
Despite some initial problems configuring the modem in bridge mode, the present problem is the following:
Everytime I try to copy a file (it can be either an 4MB file or an 800MB one) I get this error window:
    — Cannot copy "Filename": the specified network name is no longer available
Even when copying a file from one Share of the disk to another! However, have no trouble copying 1KB file, for example.
I've been searching throughout the internet for some days now but couldn't find any answer.
This LaCie NAS External Disk is ethernet-only and can only be connected to a switch or a router. It worked before with my older modem/router. I changed the ethernet cable by another one and I get the same result.
The Time Capsule is cofigured to distribute IPs through DHCP. Right now, I even have enabled the DHCP reservations to assign a static IP to the NAS, and to the Pcs. STill the same result.
This happens on both pcs. Still haven't tried with a wireless device yet (I don't have one).
Can anyone help me solve this?

Ok. I've ran a test on a friend's network in order to clarify if the LaCie NAS was the hardware causing this issue.
Well, it isn't. The NAS worked fine on this other network setting - which uses a different router, modem and 2 different computers.
The test ocurred in Wireless G, though, not by Ethernet connection with the computers.
*So I guess the problem must be on my Time Capsule or Modem?*
    *Possibly a configuration issue.*
Does anyone has/had some problem connecting Ethernet External Disks on a Time Capsule/Airport that can share some Solution ?
    Please, Help!?

  • NAS - Network Attached Storage

Based on the following article, I purchased a 1 TB LaCie ethernet disk to use as a NAS:
    http://www.macworld.com/article/136632/2008/11/networkattachedstorage.html
Then I read on a post: "The problem with most NAS and Windows file servers, is the file system does not understand resource forks, just data forks in files, most notably applications, but other file types have them as well. You could copy files to the server but they are damaged if you try to copy them back."
The quote from an earlier post concerns me, because if I am using this disk to back up my files, and they wil no longer be usable in my Mac, then what good does that do me?
When it comes to NAS, I am just learning. I know what FTP is, but have no
idea what HTTP is (other than the Internet) vs. Apple File server,
AppleShare, SMB, WebDAV, NFS, etc. It took me a while to figure out
that "Shares" were like setting up folders.
Where can I go to get the basics?
When I connect via Go/Network, the LaCie says I am connected via HTTP.
Is that the most effecient way for me to connect? Can I automount?
Since this server is near my Mac, can I connect via USB also? Is there
    an advantage to doing that.
With the LaCie, it will not let me format into the HFS+ format, saying,
when reformatting, "keep in mind that the file system format cannot be
changed" yet it also says that "The Ethernet Big Disk supports drives
formatting in the following file formats: MSDOS/FAT 32, HFS+ and Linux
    file system formats".
Obviously, I need a basics course. Can anyone help or point me to a site?

It would be nice to connect via USB for speed. But I think in order for the drive to be accessible from all my Macs in the household, I need to use the ethernet route (without leaving the G5 on all the time and letting it suck down the electricity).
It is supposed to be GB ethernet, although I don't know if my DSL/Router supports GB ethernet.
I am not certain about reformatting this drive to HFS+. According to the manual, it is compatible with HFS+. But I have never understood the requirements of things like resource forks for Mac files and how they can be damaged if the files are stored on non-HFS+ drives. This drive cannot be reformatted to HFS+ via ethernet connection and I am not certain, from reading the manual that it can be reformatted to HFS+ via USB either.
Do you know anything about setting up the NAS so that I can access it via FTP when I am outside of my LAN? I set up the port forwarding 20 & 21 from the DSL modem but am unable to FTP outside the LAN. Would be nice to be able to access my files while on the road. I don't know if I will have any security problems, though.

  • Mac Pro 3,1 GeForce 8800 GT not working after Lion update

Hi everyone. I'm from Spain, so please excuse my English.
My Mac is booting, but video card is not recognized.
Could get in using Screen Share and no video card appears in system profile.
Tried to restore Snow Leopard and Leopard in target disk mode, but video card is still not working (fan is on all the time).
Don´t know what else to try...

    I think I'm trying this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T7um_hZYom4

  • Using a ethernet external Maxtor Hard Drive (Network Attached Storage)

Does anyone know if I can use a NAS (Network Attached Storage - in this case a 1 Tb Maxtor external drive with ethernet connection) and have my iMac G5 and Macbook backup to this drive on the same ethernet segment using Time Machine ? (both computers and the Hard drive will be connected through a router).
    cheers
    Steve

This used to be a suggestion often given in this forum when TM was new - but you rarely see it now. I've read posts for users who found the suggestion worked, but in time they would report that the methods eventually failed. I don't know whether anyone has had long term success.
One problem with using a NAS, you may not be able to do a full restore using the install disk when the TM backup is on a NAS. I use a Mac Mini as a file server and its external disks are used as TM destination drives for other macs in the house. This works and is supported by Apple since the server runs Leopard (the only way to provide a backup over a LAN, not including the new Apple Time Capsule). However, when doing a full restore, I have to detach the drive that is on the Mini and attach it to the source mac. Having done full restores several times, I was unable to access the LAN based mac to get to the TM backup. It has to be directly attached. So, if your NAS can't be attached or if it's not the right format (and NAS devices are rarely formatted HFS+), you won't be able to full restore, which is an important consideration.

  • Network attached storage

I just bought my first mac. I already have a network attached storage on my (linksys) router which I was accessing from my pc.
How do I make my mac see this NAS?
    Thanks.

Tesserax, as it turns out, my NAS was automatically mounted in Finder. I did not have to do anything. I did not even have to know whether it was SMB, AFP or NFS, nor sign onto the web admin interface of the NAS. Not sure why I didn't see it, or was something changed after 10.7.2. I did have to sign into the NAS via the interface in Finder so I have read/write/admin access using the pw I managed to dig up from my sysadmin notes.
In any case thanks for your help.

  • Having Berkeley DB set up in Network Attached Storage

    Hello,
I have a requirement where the Berkeley DB should be set up in a common location across the network. So We want to have the Berkeley DB location to be on NAS (*Network Attached Storage*). If any of you have done this before ...any resources or examples would be helpful. Or If any of you guys have any links to good examples please post it ... i am nt able to find good examples.

    Hello Ravi,
First, let me confirm that you are talking about Berkeley DB Java Edition. If so, you are in the right forum. If not, you should repost your question on the BerkeleyDB OTN Forum.
Second, do you mean NAS for the binaries (effectively the je.jar file), or do you mean the actual data files (the BDB JE log files)? If the former, then sure, no problem -- just go and put the je.jar on an NAS. But I suspect you mean the latter (the environment directory is on an NAS). That can be done, but you should look at the [first entry of the FAQ|http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/berkeleydb/je-faq-096044.html#CanBerkeleyDBJavaEditionuseaNFSSANorotherremotesharednetworkfilesystemforanenvironment] with regards to how this should be configured.
