Mac Pro wakes up from sleep by itself

My MacPro keeps waking up all by itself every day. I turn it off in the morning and when I come back it's always up. I don't wake wake-on-lan enabled, or automatic poweroff/poweron in System Preferences. Does anybody else have this problem?

Like most Macs of the past 10 years, you don't turn it on with a mechanical switch. You turn it on with an electronic switch. When the machine is "off," it isn't really off. It's waiting for the proper electrical signal to begin the startup sequence. My theory is that if you happen to have something on the electrical circuit that generates a pulse that resembles the power-on signal that the Mac is expecting, it wakes up.
More commonly, it happens when there is a defective keyboard or mouse cable (causing a short circuit that wakes the Mac, as if a key or mouse button had been pressed), but more rarely it comes in through the electrical system.

  • Early 2008 Mac Pro wakes up from sleep with Mavericks.

Ever since I upgraded to OSX Mavericks on Tuesday, my early 2008 Mac Pro keeps waking up from sleep mode every couple hours. It goes back to sleep again on its own though after a minute, so I'm thinking it's some kind of new automated feature that I'm not aware of. With the Mac Pro being fairly loud when it wakes up from sleep mode, it woke me up three times last night! Is there some kind of option in the system preferences that I'm not aware of that can deactivate this new behavior? I usually only shut down my computer once a week, and keep it in sleep mode when I'm not using it most of the time, but I'm going to have to start shutting it down every  night now to keep it from waking me up throughout the night...

    Hello MARl0,
You may want to disable the Power Nap functionality, if available, in System Preferences -> Energy Saver.

  • Mac Pro wakes up from sleep, 'wake reason UHC6' / remote wakeup from some d

Out of nowhere, my new Mac Pro started suddenly waking up from sleep. It was fine initially, but started a few days ago seemingly without reason.
    The console log states:
4/15/09 8:40:17 PM kernel USB (UHCI):Port 1 on bus 0x5a has remote wakeup from some device
    4/16/09 12:31:15 AM kernel Wake reason = UHC6
4/16/09 12:31:15 AM kernel System Wake
When checking system, and USB, I find:

Now, from what I can see, the wake event comes from the Bluetooth - but I only have one BT device paired (they Apple wireless keyboard), and I have 'allows BT devices to wake up' DISABLED.
Does anyone have any suggestions or idea what could be causing the wake-ups? This seems to be happening every few hours, but at no specific times...
    Thanks,
    Dan

    Depends.
As you can see, the wake event seems to specifically point to the ONE USB bus that the BT is on - but nothing else. All other USB busses have a different hex address....
Having said that, I have - on the other bus - an RF logitech mouse (I disconnected that - no difference. And, when waking it says 'wake even on the xxx' bus - not the one that 'seems' to wake the system).
Then, a UPS, and finally an Apple 30inch CinemaDisplay.
The strange this is that is was fine the first 2 weeks I had the system. Then, one weekend being gone, I turned it off (but that wasn't the first time) and then on. Since then, the wake-up issue on that 'remote device causing event' happened - though of course I can't be sure they are really connected....
Do you think another device could cause the wake-up - even though the console would wound to BT?
For the record, I have no BT issues (adapter turning of or otherwise) that I am aware of.
Thanks for the help / suggestions!

  • Mac Pro - Unwanted Waking From Sleep - A Possible Fix

I've suffered intermittent unwanted wakes on my Mac Pro for years, although there have been months in which it seemed to go away. Console consistently suggested that the problem was a USB hub (EHCI), which I traced to my Apple 24-inch HD Cinema Display. Here's a sample from the Console-
11/22/10 10:28:32 PM kernel Wake reason = EHCI
11/22/10 10:28:32 PM kernel System Wake
11/22/10 10:28:32 PM kernel The USB device HubDevice (Port 5 of Hub at 0xfd000000) may have caused a wake by issuing a remote wakeup (2)
When the problem started recurring last month, my "fix" was simple: unplugging the video display's USB cable. The display's USB hub is, of course, no longer available, but I plugged a third-party hub into the USB input that the display had previously been using, plugged in all the peripherals that I'd previously used the display's hub for, and so far no unwanted wakes. The only difference I've noticed is that the display's little power indicator light (bottom left corner) no longer lights up, but that's a small price to pay for being able to put my system soundly to sleep.
If the ghost returns, I'll let you know.

This a is common sleep issue. This person has it.
In my sleep tip faq, the first tip I give is this......
"USB devices and hubs often cause Macs to not sleep or wake quickly from sleep (notably HP printers and scanners, HP all in ones, and Cannon scanners). Disconnect all USB except for keyboard and mouse and try. If it sleeps, add one back at a time testing after each one to find the culprit."

  • Macbook Pro wakes up from sleep when express card inserted

    Hi,
my macbook pro (no unibody, 10.5.7) wakes up from sleep when I have my express card 34 (Hama 16GB) inserted. Is there any trick to disable wake up when a drive is inserted? I tried to eject the disk before going to sleep with a shell script but it automounts the device... I attached my log... I hope somebody can help! Thanks a lot!

Hey, thanks 4 your response... Well I figured that out... I hoped that there was a way to prevent system calls, regarding devices, to wake up my macbook pro... something like: forbid interrupts while asleep
If you ever hear of a way to fix it please let me know...
I think a solution would be to disable automount on the express card device... I use it for my time machine backup and really DON'T want to remove the card every five minutes...
    Cheers, Philipp

  • My macbook wakes up from sleep by itself all the time.

When the lid is open and it´s been inactive for some time it wakes up and then goes off by itself according to my settings in power and battery.
Also when I close the lid it doesn´t stop trying it makes noise over and over again.
All my settings are ok I think.
Does anyone have the same problem?

  • Internet connection does not work when Macbook wakes up from sleep

I recently installed MAC OSX LION. After that whenever the macbook pro wakes up from sleep, the internet connection does not work. I get a message 'DNS lookup failed'. I have to Turn off the WIFI and turn it back on every time. Has anyone come across this?

Same problem here. But I am afraid it has nothing to do with Safari because I don't even have Safari open. When it wakes from sleep, it has no internet connection and i cannot get me mail unless I shut wifi off and then back on. This happened back at the start of Snow Leopard too and it was something Apple eventually fixed.

  • After update to OS X 10.7.5 on my Mac Pro (2009) USB ports don't work at all after wake up from sleep mode; with 10.7.4 there was (nearly) any problem.

    hello,
after update to OS X 10.7.5 on my Mac Pro (2009) USB ports don't work at all after wake up from sleep mode; with 10.7.4 there was (nearly) any problem.
the used ports appear to be "killed"; the unused USB ports seem to work, but the Mac works in slow-motion.
The only "solution" is to restart my Mac.
    - SMC-reset, PRAM-reset or repairing user rights had no positive effect; what is the solution - a bug-fix-update???

I have a mac mini (A1283) with OS 10.7.4. Upon upgrading to 10.7.5 it did not start up again. Instead, the light was on and the hard drive did not start up. The light on the connected USB mouse was not lit.
    My solution:
    Cold start with Command-v pressed.
This should start Verbose mode (see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1492 ).
What happened on my mac mini was that the grey startup screen with the Apple logo appeared for a long while before the login screen came.
Maybe Cmd-v set open firmware params and fixed some corruption.
Anyway: my mac mini works again.

Does anyone know what to do when a apple mac book pro screen won't wake up from sleep? I have tried to restart it and it still won't come on.

Try this, which is located in your macbook pros user manual.

  • A brand new Mac Pro doesn't wake up from sleep

I got a new Mac Pro.
It has an external SATA controller and a video card with NVIDIA Quadro 4000 chipset on it.
It has a Snow Leopard installed.
The problem it has is that it doesn't wake up once it goes to sleep, either by choosing "Sleep" menu item or by using "Energy Saving" setting.
I notice some people mention a keyboard doesn't respond while his trackpad does. In my case, nothing works.
I don't know if it is due to keyboard or a magic mouse. I tried to connect another wired mouse to the enclosure of the Mac Pro directly, but it did't cause Mac Pro wake up.
By searching on Google, many people seem to have this problem, whether they have Mac Pro, MacBook Pro, and so on.
Personally, I have a 17" PPC iMac, 13" MacBook with Core Duo 2, and have used MacBook Pro 17", but they didn't have this problem.
I tried to reset the SMC, but it didn't help.
Do anyone know what cause this problem and how to solve it?
Is there any patch for this?
    Thank you.

Does it sound like it's waking up but the monitor just doesn't display anything?
I ask because if so, I'm experiencing the same problem.  I have a Quad-Core Mac Pro (no external devices) and if it goes to sleep I have difficulty getting it to display anything on the monitor after waking it up.  Now, I just recently hooked up an additional monitor (VGA) for dual display, and the funny thing is, that monitor will wake, but my main monitor won't.
Sometimes I get this error after boot-up too, where the computer will get to the login screen, but my main monitor is receiving no signal ("at least according to my monitor").
If that's the same issue, then I'll post any success I find for you!
    Best,
    J

  • Mac pro wont wake up from sleeping

Hello, so i looked through the forums and it seems like everyone is having the problem of their mac pro not going to sleep. I on the other hand, once it leave my computer be for a while, and it goes to sleep, it doesnt want to make up. I shake the mouse, click the mouse, press something on the keyboard, nothing seems to work. My monitor is on, and the mac pro has the light on showing that it is on also, its just not showing anything on screen. I would just end up having to hold down the power to turn it off and then re-turn it back on, and then it works just fine..
Can someone please explain to me what is happening?? Thanks much!
    Tim

Hi Tim Me too. It seems this began to happen to me as well about 2 upgrades ago. I opened an apple ticket where I was told to reset my sleep settings to 5 and 10 min. This worked for about an hour and when I called back they said to just bring it in the store to have it fixed and hung up the phone without any further conversation. I have owned this Mac for 5 years now and I love it to death, but refuse to bring it in just yet.
There are a litany of things you can try here:
    http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-10328064-263.html
I am halfway through the list Good luck everyone.
    Cheers

  • Why does my macbook pro not wake up from sleep?

I have a brand new Macbook Pro 13inch. It freezes up when I try to wake it from sleep. I was wondering if there is a fix for this.

    Hello,
Thanks for visiting the Apple Support Community!  Have you performed all of the software updates on your MacBook Pro?
    To do this:
    1. Click the Apple Logo in the top left
    2. Choose "Software Update"
    3. Click "Check for Updates"
Install any available updates and restart your Mac. Let us know if this resolves it or not.  Additionally, you have posted in the iPhone Discussion area; for future reference please post in the correct category.
    Thanks!

  • Wakes from sleep by itself

I have a 20" iMac (Intel Core 2 Duo) and an issue appears to have started after the recent software update (not sure if this is the culprit).
My iMac wakes unexpectedly after being at sleep (sometimes after 10 mins sometimes a bit longer). I have NO bluetooth devices attached (and bluetooth is off anyway) and I do not allow bluetooth devices to wake the computer.
I also have the "Wake for Ethernet..." unchecked. I have also tried to trash the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist file and rebooted. And also have run Onyx to fix permissions and run the maintenance scripts.
I just say someone on a different forum post that they too are having this problem with new iMac. Anyone hear of a fix or suggestions as to what may be the cause?

    Steve,
Okay more advice. If you go to: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1849881&#1849881
you can read the advice suggested but this one looked really helpful posted by Dale Welsshaar:
This is for a Mac that won't sleep.
First, read things in Apple doc.#25801 on sleep settings.
USB devices and hubs often cause Macs to not sleep or wake quickly from sleep (notably HP printers and scanners, HP all in ones, and Cannon scanners). Disconnect all USB except for keyboard and mouse and try. If it sleeps, add one back at a time testing after each one to find the culprit.
If you've set your Mac to recieve faxes, it may not be able to sleep. It might also have a damaged preferences file.
If you use your Mac for faxing, open System Preferences. click Print & Fax, click the Faxing tab, and uncheck the Recieve Faxes On This Computer box.
If that does'nt work or you've never faxed on your Mac, go to Finder/Hard Drive /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration and delete the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist and com..apple.AutoWake.plist files (if your Mac asks, type your admin. password).
If the latter file isn't present in the folder, go to user name(probably your name)/Library/Preferences, delete the com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file, and reboot your Mac.
    Hope this helps!
    P.S. One member here reported this (Michael Gleason);
"I have had this problem with my IMac G5. It is surprisingly irritating. LaCie's Silverkeeper backup software was the cause. By default it gave itself permission to wake up the computer to check if a backup was needed. Do you have this or a similar program installed which has scheduled activities including wake-up permissions as an option?"
Dave Hamilton provided this link, xlr8yourmac.com, to a member, which addresses failure of deep sleep with some users that updated and added new FireWire and USB cards.
    Cheers!
    DALE
Hopefully this will help you out even more,

I had no problems with my Power Mac dual G4 867 while running Tiger, but immediately after a clean install of Leopard (a fresh install - no third party apps) my Dell 17 inch LCD monitor will not wake from sleep.
The monitor comes on just fine when the computer first boots, but if the computer sleeps, and I wake it by hitting a key on the keyboard, the drives spin up and I can hear that it thinks it's working just fine, but the monitor won't wake.
I know that the computer is working fine despite the sleeping monitor because I can hear VoiceOver working after a clean install of Leopard (if I let it sleep after the Welcome movie) while asking for user information.
I reinstalled Tiger, and the problem disappeared. The monitor wakes reliably from sleep with a fresh, clean install of Tiger. But with Leopard, even turning off and on or unplugging the monitor doesn't wake the screen.
I have reset the PRAM, the PMU, and the Open Firmware (the firmware is up to date). I even opened the case and pulled and re-seated the video card. Nothing seems to work, so I have just set the computer to never sleep. Not a great option, given the insane fan volume in the G4 MDD model.
Thanks for any suggestions anyone can offer.

I'm having similar problems with both a new MacBook Pro and a new Mac Mini, both connected via a Gefen DVI switch to a Dell 2005FPW monitor. Putting the MacBook Pro to sleep while in dual monitor mode will crash the machine. Putting the Mac Mini to sleep won't crash it, but the monitor won't wake—the computer wakes, but the monitor stays black. I can use Screen Sharing to connect to the Mac Mini and restart it (the only fix, as far as I can tell).
I suspect this is a software issue, because my old PPC Mac Mini would usually wake from sleep. The Gefen support people say this shouldn't be happening.
Anyone having this problem should probably post it as a bug at Apple's Feedback page. I think reinstalled, resetting PRAM etc. is probably a waste of time. Meanwhile, don't sleep your monitor.

I'm considering buying the new Dell 27" display which is 2560 x 1400 (same as the 27" iMac). Does anyone know for sure if the MBP 13" (mid 2009) will fully support that resolution? Thanks! Paul
