Mac Pro Windows 7 Fail

Hi I have a late 2007 8 core Mac Pro
it has been living mostly happily with Snow Leopard and Windows XP.
I need 64 bit windows on it, but since it's not supported on that machine I decided to take the route of installing Win 7 x86 first.
I I wanted to wipe the HD clean and do a fresh install of everything. Snow Leopard installed, but Win 7 gives me a Blue screen of death every time I tried to install it.
I decided to get a new clean hard drive for the install.
re-installed Snow Leopard on the original drive (the whole drive, not just a partition). Restored with a time machine backup to original state and got all the latest updates. So far so good.
partitioned new drive using disk utility. Windows 7 doesn't like it- won't install. First it says it must be formatted as NTFS. I do the format with the windows installer, but still no go- I get "Windows is unable to install.....error: 0x80300024"
No further explanation, so I went back and used the boot camp installer to format the drive. Windows went ahead with installation, but restarted at a certain point and ...again, Blue Screen of Death!
So, I feel like it's either a hardware problem or something to do with whatever is on my Mac that I restored with Time Machine.
Is it possibly something else? Anyone have any other ideas?
Thanks in advance!
Doug

Yes, I used #2 approach myself!
Windows won't install on a separate drive if it sees you have GPT/GUID format for your other drives - so remove them. And for safety.
Obviously you can't remove if it is a one drive with both, the way every other type Mac is forced to do it.
If you use Boot Camp Asst (I did not) then shutdown instead of restart so you can remove everything. And, you will need to format your target drive.
Windows 7 has a 100MB system recovery partition.
Some people have found that Windows 7 over wrote one of the Apple hidden 128MB EFI volumes instead.

  • Mac pro windows 7/64 pro bootcamp installer fails

just finished update of osx and fresh install of w7/64pro. on install of the
bootcamp drivers i got a blue screen that took out the w7 install. this happened
three times in a row until i figured out to just ignore bootcamp drivers and
let windows be. it seemed to have drivers for the mac gear natively anyway as
it turns out. in device manager the keyboard and mouse are there and listed as
    having apple drivers.
problem is that the keyboard has limited functionality. the numeric keypad
numbers don't work and the eject button doesn't work. not sure what else but
that's enough for me to want to get things fixed.
read up on things and found that my era of mac pro is compatible. tech support
confirmed this. read that i should have bootcamp 3.1 so i downloaded it.
couldn't install it, though, since i never installed bootcamp to begin with. i
get an error dialog that i need 3.0 before i can update to 3.1.
just for laughs i decided to try installing drivers from inside windows rather
than from the bootcamp windows install process. booted into windows, started
the installer from my snow leopard cd and the install hangs on the nvidia
driver installation. makes a certain amount of sense since i don't have an
nvidia card. i have an ati 2600xt. at least it didn't blue screen and take out
    the partition.
    anybody seen this?
any tips on how to get past this particular level of computer ****?
    thanks,
    BabaG

think i got it working. will take a few days of working to find kinks probably, though.
found 'bootcamp64.msi' on the snow leopard cd while booted into windows. r-click
on it and selected 'troubleshoot compatibility.' worked my way through the settings
there and the install seemed to go ok.
there was one quirk in that the mouse cursor frazzed into something like a vertical
stack of very tiny pointers. that was interesting but didn't prevent me from using it
until i needed to reboot for something. once back after the reboot the cursor was
back to normal. will watch for more oddness over the next few days.

  • Mac Pro, Windows 7 Virtual PC-XP Mode Problem w/ Hardware Virtualization

I have installed windows 7 (64 bit) on an 8 month old intel mac pro with latest bootcamp. runs great. cannot get virtual pc / xp mode to work.
confirmed latest firmware, confirmed processor has virtualization (vmx listed in processor details when boot to snow leopard).
when i run ms hardware-assisted virtualization detection tool it confirms hardware virtualization. after i install xp mode and virtual pc update i get an error message that there is no virtualization. ms hardware-assisted virtualization detection tool will now also report no virtualization. if i uninstall xp mode and virtual pc update, ms hardware-assisted virtualization detection tool will again confirm virtualization.
any thoughts? i searched forum but did not see anything - sorry if i missed it.
    thanks in advance for input...

Because the hardware of Mac Pro does have Intel-VT capability, it's just disabled.
One solution (though a very lame one) is boot into OS X first, run VMware Fusion or Parallel (which enables Intel-VT), then restart into Windows.
Just hope there would be some way to enable Intel-VT on Windows...

  • Mac Pro - Boot Fail/Migration

    Hello,
I've just purchased a brand new quad core mac pro to replace my old G5. On start-up I used migration to transfer my old hard drive to the new one, which has Lion on it. But now I can not get the new hard drive to boot. I turn on the Mac and the apple start up screen appears and then it goes to black, the hard drive and fans sound like they're working but only output is black.
The Mac can boot from my older hard drive and will boot in safe mode on the new one. I disabled the startup items and repaired the disk permissions but still nothing.
Not sure if this has anything to do with the issue but when booting from the old hard drive the computer will not sleep or restart.
    Any ideas?
    Many thanks in advance...

    Reinstalling Lion
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alterhatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

  • File loss over network on Mac Pro /windows

Hi I hope someone can help, I have been using my network for over a year with no problems also networked the same for the last 4 years.
I now have files and folders go missing when dragging between computers I have one mac pro and x2 windows computers vista & 7.
The network is set up so I have the windows set up for emails and downloading files - I then transfer to the mac, I work on them and drag them over to the windows vista which runs the rip for my large format printer.
I have a shared folder on each pc which all the computers can read/write.
When i drag files and more often folders from the windows 7 to the mac they will not show on the mac but are sitting in the shared folder. when i drag from the mac to the windows vista I sometimes can't see anything in the shared folder (other times a few things) but I can't add folders or drag files over without them going missing. there is no logic or pattern to what i get so if this make any sense i really could do with the help!
    thanks ali

The new user helped a little but not enough to make the customer happy. I have done a bunch of research over the weekend and I have found there is a little known bug in Apple's ACLs. ACL stands for Access Control List and I have a snippet from a MacFixit that describes the issue:
"A disappointing aspect of Repair Permissions in Leopard is that it does not deal with ACLs (Access Control Lists), a secondary layer of permissions control laid on top of standard Unix permissions, tentatively introduced in Tiger and actually used for the first time in Leopard. Repair Permissions will announce that it is surprised to discover that a certain folder has an unexpected ACL setting, but it won't do anything about it (in other words, it won't repair that kind of permissions)."
Anyway it appears to me that if your privileges get hosed in a computer upgrade the only way to really fix the problem is copy all of your data to a second HD and then break out the install DVDs that came with the Mac Pro and do a fresh install and set the user/file-sharing up manually and then copy your data back to the Mac Pro. I did not connect back to the G4 to get the data again, I just copied my many years of correspondence back to the Mac Pro and this time everything works?
The new user idea did let me manually drop files onto the Mac Pro from connected computers it WOULD NOT let me save files to the Mac Pro from network computers. I usually got a bad path message when I would try and save from Word or TextEdit. I figured I had wasted enough time on this problem and erasing everything and starting over was a better idea.
    Thanks everybody.

  • New Mac PRO - Windows 8 Pro Ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the computer's bios menu

    Hello all,
I got a new Mac Pro 2013, and am trying to install windows 8 using the Boot Camp Utility.  It creates a 200GB partition, partitioned in FAT.  Having done this on my other computers, I usually hit advanced options and then reformat the partition as NTFS.  I then install.  When i format, I still get this error:
Windows 8 cannot be installed - ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the computer's bios menu.  I'm not sure how to get past this step.  I am trying to boot from the windows 8 CD and run setup after I partition the drive.  I have the USB key with the apple setup files on it.
    What am I missing?

Apparently installing via an ISO fixed this issue for me.

  • Mac Pro - Windows 7 - Apple Cinema Display

Hi -- after years of not installing Windows on a separate drive, I finally did it. The install went failrly well, wireless devices work in Windows 7. My remaining issue is that Windows 7 doesn't seem to recognize the Apple Cinema Display (ACD) with the Mini Display Port. If I switch to a different DVI monitor, the display seems fine. However, if I go back to the ACD, the display shakes upon boot up, and the resolution, screen size in off and a generic display is seen in the Control Panel. Sometimes, it does recognize the ACD, which is weird, but never on boot up.
Is the only solution running a DVI adaptor and not using the ACD with the Mini Display Port? When I first installed the BootCamp drivers, it seemed to work, but there were a few updates afterwards, and it seems that I lost whatever had stabilized the issue.
    Thanks!

There was someone complaining about using two VGA monitors on 2010 w/ ATI 5770.
There is an improved dual display support now in Windows 8. Windows 7 was always "where is my screen" on startup. The video port close to the motherboard seems to be A or primary that it looks for on startup.
I have 23" ACD (2006 unit) Mac Pro but always used GTX, no ATI card (well recently I was using Windows only and an ATI 6790 or something).
And of course you must have installed ATI (Windows own drivers are iffy or "okay" but not the best.
Apple drivers for Windows (aka "Boot Camp" 3.x or Lion's 4.01) include driver support for the ACD.
You say MDP and 4870 in profile, but I didn't think Apple's 4870 had one, and flashed PC cards always have trouble (unflashed 4870 would of course work as normal as can under Windows).
Rollback update of driver is one step. Run Driver Sweeper 3.2 and CCleaner (and clean the registry) to get the graphic driver installed and 'clean.'
Patch Tuesday can always affect a few systems and a problem but more likely a conflict with something else.
One at a time see if you can get new graphic driver to help.
Wtih the 5770 Apple tech note does mention not using adapters.
And don't allow Windows to provide gpu driver if it asks

  • Compatible Raid 5 cards for 2008 Mac Pro - Windows bootable

    Hi,
could someone be so kind and give me a list of Raid 5 controllers (internal connectors) that are compatible with OSX in a 2008 8-core Mac Pro and that is also able to boot into Windows via Bootcamp?
    Thanks!
    Tom

Once you look at what is sold, limits the list. None of those listed require Windows though. What specs? I don't see any specs. And of course nothing listed are Windows, that would be strange. Why you pasted notebook and iMac graphic adapters... unless Apple is selling FCPX for Windows.
Forget the GT120 though some use it with FCPX and are okay with it, save a little though I think 5770 has more processing, bandwidth and of course 1GB DDR5.
support for 6870 PC card is looking like a possible option now, too.
It is more mainly just 5770 vs 5870. Or Quadro 4000.
Amazon has PNY Mac Pro edition $790 vs Apple's $1195 for same card

  • 12 Core Mac Pro client fails to connect to xsan

Dear all, hopefully someone can shed some light on this problem.
We have an xsan system running with clients and MDCs running 10.6.6, XSAN 2.2.1. We have just purchased a new 12 core Mac Pro but we cannot get the machine connected as a client. XSAN admin sees the machine, but fails to write the configuration files on the client. We have tried running the client in 32 and 64 bit modes.
Has anybody else had the same problem? We do have one other 64 bit 8 core Mac Pro (early 2009) client connected without a problem.
Any advice would be greatfully received.

  • Mac Pro + Windows 7 = External HDD?

The goal is fairly simple: Install Window 7 on to an external SATA III drive via eSATA III controller card for occasional gaming use. All of my bays including the extra bays are in use in my Mac Pro and I would like to run Win7 on an external esata drive for the occasional CMD + Option boot. I went through a number of trouble shooting issues including discovering that Boot Camp will only adjust the OS X drive so I started wondering if there were other ways to accomplish this. I tried installing Win 7 on to it while inside a PC and tried hooking it up out of desperation but alas, that didn't work. Finally I resorted to sacrificing 32 / 120GB of my SSD internal OSX drive to do it properly, it installed fully, then bluescreened. Nice Windows, nice. In addition, I tried removing eSata interface all together and went with a dog slow USB 2.0 slave drive tool, but Windows doesn't install via USB or 1394.
Swing and a miss! Any thoughts as to how I can get back to my beloved gameage this weekend?

You are limited to PCIe cards.
Don't put Windows on the same drive as OS X. It isn't necessary either.
Paragon has some tools for putting Windows on a drive that is more portable.
Windows 7 needs 45GB and above. SP1 update takes 9GB to accomplish. You cut it too thin is all.
Moving Windows from PC to Mac can be done, before you install updaes and motehrboard drivers.
2008s have UEFI 2.x, they have 6 SATA ports.
Some of your ports now are data, not system, and could be external.
Buy extra drive sleds, there is a different size for 2009 and later, they cost about $20-25 each and can then swap drives (shutdown and let cool) and use it that way.
If you want full SATA3 6G controller and SSD III, talk to OWC. How to get power and cable to say lower optical drive bay off a card is messy compar4ed to a PC.

  • Mac Pro - Windows XP Incompatibility??

I just got a new Mac Pro with OSX 10.5.1. I tried to install Windows XP earlier, and everything worked great until windows started the actual install process. A couple of minutes after it started the install process, I got a blue screen with a "Stop 0x0000000A irqlnot_less_orequal" error. The error message made it sound like there is a piece of hardware or software on my Mac Pro that is conflicting with the installation. Has this happened to anyone else? Any thoughts on how to fix my problem?
The only thing that I have done to my mac is upgrade the software to 10.5.1 and add two sticks of memory.

The copy of windows that I got from the IT guy apparently didn't have service pack 2. Once I got the right disc it installed smoothly.

  • Mac pro (2013) fails to see usb 3.0 connected drives in boot selection screen

    Hi,
I am using the late MacPro and have three drives attached via an USB 3.0 hub (Anker Uspeed USB 3.0 7 Port Hub).
The hub has a VIA VL812 chipset with the latest firmware update (9081) - I have verified this.
My problem is, when I enter the boot device selection screen (by pressing the alt-key during startup) none of the drives is recognized.
When I plug any drive directly into one of the four USB 3.0 ports of the MacPro, thereby bypassing the hub, it becomes visible and I can use it to boot.
AFTER the boot process, when OS X has finished loading, everything works fine. I have used two of the drives to backup several GBs of data from my main drives (connected via Thunderbolt) with no issues.
Is anybody able to connect drives through a USB 3.0 hub and use them in the boot selection screen? Which USB hub do you have?
    Thanks
