Mac Pro wireless upgrade

I have an original Mac Pro from 2006, and I just had a airport extreme card put in. What I need to know is, if I purchase a 802.11n router will I be able to use the n protocol on this mac? With or without the enabler?
Wireless Card Type: AirPort Extreme (0x14E4, 0x87)
Wireless Card Firmware Version: Broadcom BCM43xx 1.0 (5.10.38.27)

Open up your Applications folder. Click Utilities then *Network Utility*. The information you're looking for should be there!

  • First time user trying to set up new Mac pro, wireless mouse and wireless keyboard together?

So  I just bought a new Mac Pro, wireless keyboard and mouse. i am a first time Mac user. How do I even get started......connect the wireless mouse and key board to the Mac Pro desktop to even get started??

Just turn on the mouse and keyboard and observe that the green light comes on and starts to blink then turn on the Mac. The Mac should give you on-screen instructions.

  • MacBook Pro & Mac Pro Both Upgraded to Leopard, All is OK So Far

I thought I would chime in with my experience in upgrading my MacBook Pro last night & My Mac Pro this morning. I made sure that I had 3 valid back ups of my Mac Pro data beforehand with my last back up yesterday morning. I also made sure that all my software was updated & checked for Apple updates as well. When I updated my MacBook Pro, I let the system validate the DVD and did an upgrade (not clean install or archive & install. The entire process (install DVD check & upgrade) took about 2 hours. I got the blue screen when it rebooted after teh install. Thanks to the posts I had seen on this board, I knew that I might get teh Apple BSOD for awhile . About 10 minutes later, my screen came up & I was able to access my wireless network no sweat. All my apps worked fine. This morning I upgraded my Mac Pro. Since I knew that the install DVD was good, I skipped the install DVD check. Initially it came back & said that the install would take about 1 hour and 29 minutes, but it only took about 45 minutes. This time I only got the blue screen for about 2 minutes, then my screen came up. I also installed the optional apps and the HP printer drivers on the install DVD for both my systems. The only issue I had was with my external Bose desktop speakers for my Mac Pro--they would not work, only the internal speaker was working. I rebooted, shut down & waited then brought my Mac Pro up, unplugged & replugged in the speakers but all for naught. I finally called Applecare and then after about 10 minutes on hold, the external speakers began working. I rebooted a couple of times, and it seems as though it took Leopard awhile to figure out that the speakers were there. My external Western Digital My Book USB external hard drive hung off my Mac Pro was recognized w/o a problem, and my first Time Machine back up is chugging away right now. I made sure to exclude my external hard drive from being backed up. I have successfully synched my iPhone and iPod Classic and printed to my HP 2600n printer. I feel that my apps launch and shut down more quickly under Leopard, and I really like the interface, the preview icons, and especially the dock (but then I am a sucker for eye candy). I have not yet tested Spaces. So far I am very happy with Leopard. As always, YMMV (your milage may vary). Good luck, Amy (sorry for he one long run on paragraph, but the last few times I posted in paragraphs, part of my post did not get posted.)

My only beef is with Migration Assistant. It gets to the last "minute" and just sits there.
Anyway, I'm loving 10.5 to the max !!

  • Mac Pro 2008 - upgrade to 2010 model or not?

I have a Mac Pro 2008 2.8 gHz with 12GB RAM. I'm not running Premiere Pro CS5 which is great and seems to love RAM and processor speed. I also recently got a CUDA card to take advantage of it's GPU acceleration.
My question is: Should I get a new Mac Pro 2010, 6, 8, 12 core or just upgrade my RAM to say, 24GB and perhaps get some SSDs (maybe even in a RAID 0) as my boot drive.
The RAM upgrade will be in the $650 range, SSDs could be at least that. I'll need RAM anyway for a new model as my old RAM isn't compatible.
Getting a new model could set me back $5000 (or more) when it's all loaded.
I'm also a little disappointed in the 2010 Mac Pros, for example my 2008 Mac pro was a no-brainer, but now I'm ambivalent about this upgrade to 2010, thinking there may be new models out this year that fill in all the holes. I kind of feel like the 2010 Mac Pro upgrade was a little like the Final Cut Pro 7 upgrade, it was a stop gap because Apple needed to do something. I could be wrong about this though.
I know this is kind of a difficult question to answer, but if you have any opinions, please feel free to lend any advice.

The single external QPI v2 link runs at up to 8 gigatransfers/sec, or 32GB/sec bidirectional bandwidth, a 25 per cent speed up over the current generation, but also feeding a third more cores on each socket.

  • Mac Pro 2006 upgrading CPU

I have a 2006 Mac Pro Intel with 2 2.66 dual cores and would like to upgrade them to 2 2.66 quad cores. I can't afford a faster unit. I use FCP 6 and it takes me forever to render video but at least these will help me speed it up a little.
I emailed xlr8yourmac.com about this 2 weeks ago seeking help but got no response. I found no posts there or here in apple discussions to help with the questions I've listed below.
Ebay has some used ones but I don't know what units to buy. I went to Intel and they list different "Categories" of (discontinued) Xeon X5355's like "FC-LGA6", "PASSIVE FC-LGA6" and "FC-LGA6 TRAY". Inside each "Category" there are 2 different "Socket" types: "PLGA771" and "LGA771". Then there are *"Spec Codes"*: "SLAEG", "SLAC4" and "SL9YM". I have no idea which would be appropriate if ANY of them are.
I am NOT a techie...I do video & audio and send the computer out for repairs. The computer's way out of warranty but I've chek'd with 2 local apple authorized serv. centers and they said it may cost over $1600 to purchase and install the processors. I know this computer is old and slow but hopefully I can get another year or so out of it. I cannot afford to buy a new unit. That's not affordable right now so please don't suggest that.
    Can anyone PLEASE help me?
Thanks so much for reading this.

These sorts of upgrades are not for hobbyists, especially if this is your Work computer. If you are not a technician, you are risking turning your computer into a non-functioning pile of junk. Sell the current one and buy a faster one, possibly a used one. Or look at the Apple refurbished here:
    http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/specialdeals/mac/mac_pro?mco=MTkyMTQ5MzA
Many Macs doing these jobs are NOT compute-bound. Look at Activity Monitor and be certain your CPU is really maxed out. Often it will not be because the real problems are elsewhere. If you want to make it go faster, there are several things you can do:
    1) make sure you have enough real RAM memory. On the Activity monitor memory screen, you should be seeing Zero pageouts, and there should still be some green in the pie chart.
    2) Consider having a "System" drive, with Mac OS X, Applications, and paging only, no user files, no scratch files. This will reduce overall competition for the System Drive and make your Mac more responsive. If this is a really fast drive like a small 10,000 RPM velociraptor or Solid State Drive, that will be even better.
    3) make sure you are editing from one drive, to a different drive.

  • Should I install old software in my new Mac Pro, then upgrade?

I'm trying to transfer documents and apps from my PowerBook G4 to my new Mac Pro. I used Migration Assistant but it transferred only some files, no applications, no settings, even though I checked all those boxes. I've given up on MA. But here's the question: I have Office 2004, which I'd like to install so I can have Word on my Mac Pro, and then I would upgrade after installation. I've heard that pre-intel software can really slow down your intel computer. But what about starting with that software and then upgrading, so I don't have to pay for an entirely new MS Office? Same with Final Cut Studio. Any ideas about this would be appreciated!

MS Office 2008 is an upgrade, not an update. It does not replace Office 2004. It is a separate installation. It is like upgrading from Tiger to Leopard except 2008 does not replace 2004 as Leopard replaces Tiger. You purchase the entire 2008 installation like purchasing the Leopard upgrade, but can have 2004 and 2008 running on the same machine without partitioning. I have both installed on my iMac.

As far as I know, there is no discounted upgrade price from Office 2004 to 2008. I could not find it on their website anyway. I think to get Office 2008 you need to buy the Office 2008 installation disk.
I think (might be just me) Office 2004 running in Rosetta is slightly faster than the 2008 version. All the applications in 2004 launch faster. In Excel 2008, entries into cells are delayed by a fraction of a second but 2004 has instantaneous entry (perhaps MS in their infinite wisdom thinks the delay is a feature).
I am gradually changing over to 2008 only because it needs to be compatible with other computers in my office. If it weren’t for that, I would have stayed with Office 2004. Anyway, if you are going to buy Office 2008, you can install it and run it side by side with 2004 to see for yourself.
I’ve also seen posts here about MS Office 2008 having problems with the Spaces application of Leopard. If you use the Office Toolbox (formatting palette) it has bizarre behavior when using Spaces.

  • Early 2009 Mac Pro CPU upgrade

    Hello all
I just purchased a 2009 2.66 quad core Mac Pro. I am wondering if the CPU is upgradable. Since the new CPU sits on a slide out tray and shares the same CPU socket as the 8 core CPUs. Can a user upgrade the CPU later? Say if I want to upgrade my 3500 2.66Ghz CPU to 5500 2.9Ghz CPU?

As a mac pro enthusiast this is something I have been trying to figure out as well. With this insanely high premium price on a new mid to top end model vs what it was a year ago I am curious if it would be doable to buy an oct-core 2.26 (or whatever the low end oct is) and upgrade to two nehalem processors myself at a later point. I work on computers inside and out for a living so replacing the CPU doesn't scare me. I just want to know what the part is, if its required to socket a Xeon in each slot or could it be done with just two Nehalem processors. Upgrading the CPU is very doable in a mac mini or a mac pro, its about what you have to socket into the slot. If anyone knows if the mac pro's i7 slot supports non-xeon processors that would be all the info I need.
    Thanks

  • Mac Pro Graphics Upgrade

I am considering purchasing a Mac Pro. What I plan on doing is ordering the base configuration, which comes with an NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT graphics card (with 256MB memory). However, I would like to have the option of upgrading the graphics card in a few years time. Is this a straight forward process with a Mac Pro? Is this even possible with a Mac Pro? Any information regarding upgrading the graphics card in a Mac Pro is much appreciated.
    Thanks.

You may want to wait a week or so; it's possible that new Mac Pro models with new graphics options will be introduced.
If you want one of the current models, there are only a few choices; the 7300 you mentioned, the ATI Radeon X1900XT, and the NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500. The latter is quite expensive, and although it still is listed as an option at the Apple Store, I've heard rumors of it being discontinued.
I would recommend the ATI Radeon X1900 XT, if you are purchasing immediately, but as I said, you may want to wait a bit and see.
And yes, upgrading the graphics card in a Mac Pro is currently an easy thing to do. The Mac Pro is famous for its expandability and upgrade options.

  • Is older Mac Pro worth upgrading?

Hi, I am running 10.10.2 on a Mac Pro (Early 2009). I'm a graphic designer and I run Adobe CS4 Photoshop, Indesign, Illustrator and Dreamweaver often simultaneously along with other programs. This computer was lightening fast when I first bought it. But after a few years of use and OS grades it's sluggish and quirky. I bought a 2 TB hard drive and moved all of my files as well as the operating system onto it, thinking maybe my old one was failing. I'm still having problems with slowness and quirks. My old graphics tablet acts erratic, the design software acts erratic, so on and so forth. Is there anything I can do to save, update, help etc. this Mac Pro, or is it time to buy something new?

Greetings. I have the same machine purchased with upgraded video cards and 24GB of RAM. I recently installed a 256GB SSD, but I'm still not happy with the level of performance.
I finally broke down and ordered a maxed-out 6-Core Mac Pro. I know that Macs have a much longer life than a PC, but the advances made over the past 6 years make my current Mac Pro just seem like it was time to be relegated to 'back-up' machine status.
The new Mac Pro shipped, yesterday. I hope the difference in performance is 'day and night' noticeable. I spent a ton of money.  lol  At my advanced age I'm figuring it's the last machine I will be purchasing and having used Macs since 1984 I figured I deserved the best that money can buy.
If you use your machine to make a living, get a new machine. Between the depreciation on taxes and your personal enjoyment, it will be money very well spent.
    Cheers. - Frank

  • Unable to reconnect mac pro wirelessly to my Epson SX515W   printer?

What vrsionof OS X are you running? If it is Mavericks, the newest OS X version, there seems to be many people running that version of OS X that are having problems connecting or staying connected to there printers.

  • Mac pro wireless problem osx 10.9.4

    Mac Pro n
Had wireless problem after 10.9.4 update.
Various things it may say: move router closer, or invalid password, or time out.
Tried all the solutions normally provided. Restarting, running this, doing the airport tests, more this and that, etc... no go bro! Searches returned similar problems but no real answers.
    SO....
I changed router channel from 6 to 7, you can change yours to what ever channel you like, and restarted router.
In NETWORK preferences the wireless light was orange and not connected. Network connection shows my network though.
I then went into NETWORK > ASSIST ME > DIAGNOSTICS >The Network Status light for Wi-Fi was green but all others below it were red.
I then typed in the name of network connection and the password in the wifi settings and it said wrong password, I did it again and a drop down box said "network changes detected"
    Wahoooo That is the ticket!
Then re-enter the Connection Name and Password and it should connect.
All the lights should now be green on the Network Status (ISP, Internet, etc)
    Lucky Me!
    Question is:
How do I manually get my connection back rather than hoping and praying the Mac Pro will finally detect something different and then allow the connection.

Try updating to 10.9.5. I had similar problems before updating.

  • Buy low end Mac Pro now, upgrade later?

Wondering if it makes sense to buy a low end 2ghz Mac Pro now, and then upgrade later (to for example, higher ghz or maybe a Clovertown cpu).
The difference now is about $300 for a 2ghz versus a 2.66ghz, which I suppose would get me by for some time. Cpu upgrade later would mean having to sell the old cpus, can PCs use these as well as Macs? That would certainly make them easier to sell, and then buy new faster cpus or even a new processor class.

It depends on whether you use the MacPro and applications that benefit from quad-core, from faster cpu, or whether you are memory bound.
I rarely need or use iDVD or iLife and the 2GHz model is plenty for my needs it seems.
I figured the cost of 2x512 extra from RAM (1GB isn't enough you really want 2GB, more if you run DTP or video editing) and I wanted to buy a 10K Raptor which I (and anyone) would find welcome addition.
Before, my SP G4 MDD 1.25 was just not cutting it and was only an 'interim' upgrade from an even older system while I waited for something better than the 2005 G5 series.
Also, 2GHz, for me, is fine and more than enough. If I was doing it again, I would have gotten the 2.66GHz just because it would have shipped faster
Games? professional? bragging rights? I would never plan on having to upgrade cpu, or selling the OEM processor (might want them someday).

  • Mac Pro CPU Upgrade

I am somewhat new to the Mac World.
With a Mac Pro 2.66 dual core (OS-10.5), can one upgrade to 3.0 quad core CPU's ?

They only run too hot if the fan controller firmware isn't working correctly. If your fans with a 5365 stick to 500 RPM, they will definitely run hot.
In my case, cooling 5355s in a Rev A case is actually really easy. The fans /do/ need to be willing to rev up a bit to cool 5365s under 100% CPU load for extended periods of time. If they don't, then you could be looking at crashes.
