Mac Pro with a DELL 27" Monitor Question

Hi all,
I'm getting a New Mac Pro with a Dell UltraSharp 27"
The question is what kind of plug in/wire should i get for my laptop to the monitor?
As I don't have a clue, if you need a look at the information on those monitor, here's the link http://accessories.euro.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=ie&l=en&cs=iedhs1&sku= 381164
Hpe to hear from you and get things sorted!

miniDisplayPort-to-DVI adapter . Use this to connect to either the DVI or HDMI input on the display; you will need an appropriate cable (maleDVI-to-maleDVI or maleDVI-to-maleHDMI depending on the connection you choose).
miniDisplayPort-to-VGA adapter . Use this to connect to the VGA input on the display. You will need a male VGA-male VGA cable.

  • Connecting Mac Pro with GeForce GT120 to monitor and TV at same time

Hi - I just want to know in advance of buying the latest 8 core Mac Pro with a single NVIDIA GeForce GT120 graphics card, will this connect to both my apple cinema display 20'' and my Panasonic Viera LCD TV's 'PC Input' at the same time?
From what I can tell this graphics card has a small output port and a wider one - am I right in thinking the smaller one is a mini-display port which would connect to my TV's 'pc input' and the other is DVI which connects to the Apple cinema display? --- is the 'mini display port' something that connects directly into thr TV or is an adaptor required?
    Thanks for reading!

The PC input is most likely VGA. A standard (old, but still common) connection port for most laptops (which is the primary usage). If you had a desktop, you would probably connect through DVI to HDMI.
You need a DVI to VGA adapter. Also check if you need male or female, as you might need an VGA adapter, plus VGA cord.
This adapter usually comes with all Mac Pros:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/M8754G/A?mco=NDcyMDY3OA
Then you just need to buy a long VGA cord.

Again double check the if you need male/male or male/female, etc.

  • Yoga 2 Pro with external Dell P2414H monitor - Win 8.1 issues

I have a UK model Yoga 2 Pro (Core i7/256GB/8GB). Generally happy with it but I have one weird issue that is annoying me.
The system is fully patched including all Windows updates and latest Lenovo BIOS and drivers.
At work I have a Dell P2414H monitor connected to my Yoga 2 Pro (micro HDMI to HDMI cable into an HDMI to DVI adapter plugged into the monitor's DVI port).
Windows recognises the Dell monitor in display settings. I can extend my desktop onto it. I can run the Cleartype Tuner and tune the laptop screen and Dell cleartype settings independently. All good so far...
In Taskbar and Navigation Properties (right click on the taskbar and select Properties) I expect to see a "Multiple Displays" section on the Taskbar tab with a setting that allows me to extend the taskbar across both screens, as per this link: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows-8/how-connect-multiple-monitors.
However, whatever I try I never see the "Multiple Displays" settings in Taskbar Properties. I have rebooted with the external screen connected and not connected and tried everything else I can think of but all to no avail.
Is anyone else seeing a similar issue with an external monitor connected to their Yoga 2 Pro?

Discovered that if If I make the external monitor my primary screen, not the laptop, then Windows gives me the Multiple Monitor Taskbar settings back. However, I then have screen scaling issues so dialogues and the task bar etc. on the Yoga screen are tiny. Not ideal...

  • How do I get my Mac Pro to see the second monitor through a video splitter and/or switcher?

In a recording studio we have a Mac Pro with two video display monitors in the control room and we want to be able to show the content of the second monitor to the person in the recording room on a big display monitor there. However, when we interpose a switcher or splitter between the computer and the second monitor so that we can (with a switcher) switch the second monitor signal from the control room monitor to the record room monitor or (with a splitter) split the signal to go to both monitors, we have no luck. On startup the computer does not see the monitor through the switcher, so it doesn't recognize its existence. If we start the computer up without the switcher in the signal chain, it sees the second monitor just fine, and (weirdly enough) we can then change the cabling to interpose the switch, which then works to switch back and forth between second monitors (control room and record room), but that cable swapping's a royal PITA. We want a simple solution that will allow us to start up the computer, see the second monitor in the control room, then choose to show it to the person in the record room with a simple flip of the switch (or even better, split the signal so it's available both places). The splitter we've tried most recently is this one: http://tinyurl.com/curen39 I'd appreciate any advice from people who have tried this configuration or something similar with success. We have a full ProTools HD Accel 3 system installed, so there's no room to install a second video card. Thanks.

Thanks for the response! Yes, it's a 5x70 video card, a 5770 I believe. In any case, it does have the three ports, but (a not-well documented fact) that doesn't mean one can really get three full-resolution signals out of it at one time, as you alluded to in your message. So, yes, we did try hooking all three up directly to the computer, but the computer would only recognize two of those monitors, and the only way to get it to "de-recognize" the second monitor and recognize the third monitor was to physically disconnect the second monitor.
I did say when you want to connect three monitors to 5x70's there are some rules to adhere to.  These are covered in the first two apple docs mentioned above, or by title:
Mac Pro (Mid 2010), Mac Pro (Early 2009): Issues with three displays and multiple DVI, HDMI connections
Mac Pro (Early 2009), Mac Pro (Mid 2010): Supported display configurations
The general gist of these rules is that to drive three monitor son a 5x70 you need two active adapters.  That is why one of your monitors was disabled when you tried to add a third.
Here's a good explanation of what's going in here and why you need two active adapters on these cards:
Active vs. Passive Displayport adapters *the truth*
If you use DVI monitors and any of them have resolutions less than 1920 x 1200 then you can use single link active adapters. The "AMD Eyefinity Validated Dongles" chart shows some active (and passive) adapters that are acceptable.  For example of a single link DVI active adapter is the Accell B087B-006B.  An example of a dual link DVI active adapter would be the one from monoprice.com if you need to connect monitors with a resolution greater than 1920 x 1200.
I'm doubtful that SwitchResX would be able to convince the computer that there were only two monitors connected and direct the second monitor signal to the correct place, but it certainly seems worth a try, so thanks for the idea! Any other ideas are still welcome in the meantime.
I'm not doubtful.  It is a very powerful utility for dealing with all aspects of multiple monitor configurations (they call them "Display Sets") complete with forcing EDID information if necessary.  The different configurations can be controlled with a (contextual) menu and/or hot key.
SwitchResX is academic at this point if you want to have all three monitors connected.  You would need to get that working first.  Then use SwitchResX to vary the configuration combinations.  So if you go this route the "name of the game" is figure out the active adapters you need.
I only described in general terms above about the adapters since you never said exactly what kind of connections these monitors require (single link DVI, dual link DVI, hdmi, mini-displayport, vga).

  • Best Router for both a Mac Pro with Leopard and a Dell

I have posted this question in another forum, but maybe this discussion page is the better one for my question, especially in light of all the connectivity problems I'm reading about for people who have upgraded to Leopard -
Can anyone suggest a good router to purchase that would work with no problems for a Mac Pro with Leopard?
Or, the other side of the coin - what routers have you personally had problems with?
I would be connecting to the router via an ethernet cable, but I'm looking specifically for a g and b router. I need to cover my roommate too - she has a Dell and she uses a wireless usb adapter to connect wirelessly. We have a modem (cable or DSL, I think?) and high-speed internet service.
We were previously using a Netgear router, but suddenly it won't work for more than 10-15 min before it loses connection after we reset it. And this happened before I updated to the Leopard.

Apple AirPort Extreme has served my mixed environment very well. You can buy a refurbished one from Apple and save some $.

  • Mac Pro with Eizo monitor

    Hi-
I currently use an eizo display connected via the DVI to my G4 Powerbook. It uses Eizo ColorNavigatior software.
I ordered a Mac Pro with the x9100 card. I also downloaded the Ub version of Eizo ColorNaviagtor. The question is, can I hook up a non-Apple monitor right away? Otherwise, how can I install the Eizo software with no monitor hooked up?
I do have an Apple 17" CRT Studio display, that is my only Apple monitor with a 15pin VGA Video Connector. I have the DVI~VGA adapter cable, so shoud I use that monitor first to install my Eizo software?

not only will it startup just fine, but if you check the software you'll see it will install a profile for the monitor. I spent a lot of time trying to get a profile that was any better than the stock EIZO profile and found it's pretty much dead on the money for my use so you may or may not need to calibrate the monitor beyond the profile provided with the EIZO itself.

  • Dell PowerVault MD1000 with Mac OS X Server 10.5 (mac pro with fiber connec

Hey Guys. Its time that i add a bulk amount of storage to our mac network.
Currently Our network consists of one mac server which is a Mac Pro with Mac OSX Server 10.5 installed on it with 4 x 750GB Hard Drives with a couple of client machines. I now need to add atleast another 6TB to the network. This needs to be seen as the server as one drive so that 6TB needs to be raid prosume (raid 5)
Now in the Mac Pro server we have a Fibre Card that we dont currently use with 2 slots. My Plan is to buy a Dell PowerVault™ MD1000 (http://configure.euro.dell.com/dells...ulmd1000sata) and put in the amount of hard drives i require into the Dell Storage.
Would this work. If i bought the Dell PowerVault™ MD1000, would i beable to hook this upto the mac server and use it as a storage drive? Although i do no networking. Im still very new to this.
Ideally im looking for something similar to an Xserve Raid, but with out the Apple price tag on the outside if you guys no what i mean.
    Best,
    Nathaniel

You would at least need a SAS/SATA controller - preferably a hardware RAID one, much like the one bundled with this unit - but it also needs to be OS X compatible.
I would look for something that is known to work, not something you "cobble" together.
The FibreChannel card does you no good if you haven't got a device with FC ports.

  • Mac Pro with X1900 - can I connect both 20" LCD and Sony Monitor?

I'm about to purchase a Mac Pro with the x1900 for editing video with Final Cut Pro Studio. I'll use a 20" monitor for main viewing, but would like to use a Sony PVM-14L2 as a playback monitor via Component video. Can I use one of the DVI outs of the x1900 to go to the Sony? I found this type of converter online: http://www.svideo.com/hdtvaiwr8500.html
Is anyone using a set-up like this? I figure it must be pretty common for folks who edit video on a Mac Pro to output to a playback monitor via Component video. Will the x1900 let me do that with the right cable?
    Thanks,
    joel

Hmm. I have that computer, card and dongle - I'll try it out tonight (PST) and let you know.
My gut feeling is that it won't work, or won't work as you would hope.
My powerbook had SVideo out on it, but even when connected to a TV, it would not work as a video out in the same way a fire wire preview through a camcorder did - it was a second monitor on a TV, and was not the same at all as a video out feed (it looked rather horrible in fact).
So, even if this does produce a component out signal, suitable for HDTV, I doubt it will work as a playback monitor.
But I'll post back in about 8 hours time (if someone does not beat me to it.)

  • Mac Pro with vertical yellow line on Monitor

I have a Mac Pro with a large monitor. The monitor has worked fine for many years. It now has a yellow vertical line that runs top to bottom. The line are dead center on the screen. Is there any way to get rid of the yellow line?

Double check (shut down, disconnect, reconnect and restart) your connections at the computer and at the monitor.
    Impovement?
Boot to Safe mode (hold Shift while starting).
    Do the lines occur then?

  • 24" iMac... Mac Pro with Viewsonic Monitor or Apple Display.

I'm tossing between the options of getting just a 24" iMac... or getting a Mac Pro and getting an Apple Monitor or Getting a Viewsonic Monitor... Are the Apple displays really worth their price? If ONLY talking displays not specs would I really enjoy the 24" iMac due to it being 24" but at the same time (quick mention of specs) it's not upgradable as much as a Mac Pro... is spending $1,000 on a 23" Apple display worth it? I want at least a 22" display. I can get a Viewsonic 22" for less then $400. What is so great about the Apple 23" display that I would want to buy that instead and spend the extra money?

  • Mac pro - multiple graphics cards - multiple monitors - gaming?

    Hi there
Early 2008 I purchased a mac pro, with 2 8800gts and 1 2600xt. Works amazingly well, as it was originally purchased for number crunching (video cards were purchased to take advantage of openCL in snow leopard) and more screen realestate. (3 monitors)
But the thought occurred to me... I am also a bit of a gamer...
Are there any games that take advantage of multiple video cards???
Mac or windows game recommendations are welcomed!
    Thanks!

I'm sorry if my question was a little ambiguous, let me try to rephrase.
If anyone is familiar with the Nintendo DS system, you will understand that this handheld device has 2 screens.. one is used primarily as a game screen, the second screen has the game map or console or some kind of readout or whatever. Bottom line is, the game takes advantage of 2 screens.
My question to the masses is:
Are there any games in Mac OS or Windows that take advantage of multiple monitors, and therefore multiple video cards. Not SLI or Crossfire as I understand the Mac Pro hardware does not support it. My question relates to any software titles like Flight Simulators, that can render images on 2 screens connected to 2 separate video cards.
I have a copy of XPlane, and unfortunately, it only supports multiple monitors on a single video card, not multiple monitors on multiple video cards.
    So, just rehashing,
Are there any games that are capable of rendering images or gameplay on 2 different video cards at the same time?
    If so, what are they?
Cheers and sorry for the confusion.

  • Mac Pro with x1900xt  Screen keeps flashing to black???

    Hi,
I was just wondering if anyone else has had the problem, of your screen, going to black then coming back intermittingly. I just got my Mac Pro with an ati x1900xt and I'm connected to a Dell 30in screen. I have it connected to the left port nearest the side of the case. Has anyone else had this problem and got it fixed? I've tried everything, from switching cables, monitors, and I have updated all the software... can anyone help me here?
    Thank you.

    Mac Pro 3ghz ati1900 4gig ram 500gig HD   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I am having similar problems with my new Mac Pro 3GHz with ATI X1900 XT.
I have a Dell 2405FPW (24") as my primary monitor, and a Dell 2001FP (20") as my secondary monitor. Both are connected via DVI.
If I plug in the 24" into port 1 and the 20" into port 2, I see correct video on the 24", but a black screen on the 20". If I change resolution from 1600x1200 to 1280x1024 on the 20", I get video on the 20". I can then change resolution back to 1600x1200 and retain video on both monitors. However, if I turn the 20" monitor off, when I turn it back on, it is black again, and stays that way unless I do the resolution change again. Note that the monitor detects a signal, different from when there is no signal at all - it is getting a black picture, and that's what it's displaying. This happens with a fresh out of the box install of Mac OS X, as I did a clean install on another partition to troubleshoot it.
Now, here's where it gets interesting. If I swap the connections - 24" to port 2 and 20" to port 1, keeping the 24" with the menu bar, then I get video on both monitors. However, I get black picture on both monitors during the entire boot sequence and do not see video until the login window appears. I can turn the monitors off and on after that point and continue to retain video. So, that's the setup I'm using, even though it is not ideal to not be able to see anything before the login window.
On a possibly related note, if I start X11, the X11 server takes over the entire display, showing a gray checkerboard pattern as the background with no menu bar, no dock, nothing other than an xterm visible and accessible. If I command-Q, it will quit X11 and everything returns. It's like the X11 window manager is taking over and not merging with the Mac OS X desktop.
It seems like the ATI drivers and/or Mac Pro firmware and/or Mac OS X have some bugs to be worked out.

    SOLVED!!!!!
SO I did some more digging around and read ATI cards seem to overheat easily.  I knew the fan was working, but after closer inspection I realised there was ALOT of built up dust on the card and clogging the fan and airflow.  Blew it out with alot of compressed air, stuck it back in the Mac and BAM...no black screens.  I tested it by streaming 6 video sources...doing 2 screen captures at once as well as watching a HD movie in fullscreen.  Did all this for 30 minutes and no crashes.  I also downloaded an app to monitor the temps inside the computer and the expansion bay stays at 41 degrees.  No clue what it was before but obviously it was hotter than that.  So my problem is solved!  Funny that 10.7.5 made the card work harder.  I wonder if its off loading some CPU stuff to the GPU for processing more than 10.7.4 so its just working a bit harder and so it heats up faster....

What are you asking? Are you saying you do not have Microsoft Windows on your computer? If so, Microsoft Windows is not needed to surf the Internet. Or, are you saying that the site you are surfing to requires Windows Internet Explorer which you do not have?

  • New mac pro with fiber attached san storage

We have a digital media department that uses After Effects to produce content for different types of media boards, digital signage, post production  etc. They start with Red 4K files which get edited in AE and rendered to different video formats. They want to move away from Windows PC based editors with multi drive RAID local storage to the new MAC Pro with 8GB fiber attached to a shared SAN storage solution. First question, is this a wise move to run After Effects? Second question is, do you need to create multiple logical volumes on the SAN storage to accommodate where AE render location, cache, source, database, and general media content files are stored or can this all be stored on different folders in one large 50TB volume? Third question is, should six different editors be sharing the location where these files are stored?

Third question is, should six different editors be sharing the location where these files are stored?
No. Each user should have his own home directory. Not for performance resons, but simply because they'll end up overwriting each other's files. The rest - logical volumes don't matter on your end, but SAN systems still use internal stripe groups, so it would make sense to define volumes on those stripe sets simply in the interest of performance. Beyond that AE doesn't really care. It uses the operating system's file I/O stuff and 'NIX based systems don't differentiate between local volumes or otehr resources as long as they are mounted correctly in teh file system.
