Mac Pro with SSD and PPro acting doggy

Not 'good doggy' either! I think maybe I blew it by placing EVERYTHING on the SSD - media files, scratch, application, everything. I kinda thought that since it's SSD it'd be faster than putting all my media on my internal 'Black Caviar' WD drive (which I've always done in the past). This is the first time I've tried it all on SSD, and the TL was acting very (excuse me...) doggy. The SSD is my startup, application and now, media too. It's 960 gigs, and the Mac Pro is running 10.8.5, 12 gigs ram. Built in '09, not terribly recent. So, should I just go back to placing my media on the Caviar? BTW, it's only the TL that gets doggy, the program seems fine in other ways. 10 minute piece, multiple clips and effects...

Kevin, OK, I'm from SF too, and I DO say 'Doggy' but only behind her back. I suppose I might've said 'Not catlike performance'.

  • New Mac Pro with Lion and can't install FCP.

I got a new Mac Pro with Lion and can't install FCP that worked fine in SL.  Is it not compatible?  Is it really a PowerPC program???  I'm a videographer and rely on this software and to spend $300 to continue to use it after spending a lot more for this software 4 years ago!  Tell me this is not the case and there is a solution to installing FCP.

How to run FCP 6 (FCS 2) under Lion.
The installer for FCP 6 (FCS 2) is a PPC app. The Programs themselves are Intel. If your trying to install FCP 6 (FCS 2) this work-around will work...
First you need to install Rosetta from your Snow Leopard OS installation disc:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/27987.html
After doing that you can install FCP 6 (FCS 2). Remember, after installing FCP 6 (FCS 2) you need to apply the updates. This has been discuss many times in the Final Cut Studio forum.
If your trying to install FCP version 5.1 (FCS 1) (a PPC app) and below your out of luck....

Try downloading them onto the iPad normally. If you're asked to pay for them, you can't.
The developer needs to create the two versions separately.

  • Early 2009 Mac Pro with SSD Sandisk Extreme

    Hi everyone,
Just had a quick question for anyone who may know...
I recently did the SDD upgrade for my mac pro (4,1) and bought a Sandisk Extreme SSD 120 GB, and the OWC sled for the drive. Installed a fresh install of ML and tested the drive with the Black Magic Speed tester. I am getting around 127MBs write speeds and 259 MBsRead speeds. This seems slow considering the drive has speeds of up to 6GBs and SATAII can go up to 3GBS. Is this a correct speed? Or is my disk faulty? Granted it is faster that a 7200 HDD drive, although not by much according to my testing. Am I missing something here? Any insight is much apperciated.

  • Best Router for both a Mac Pro with Leopard and a Dell

I have posted this question in another forum, but maybe this discussion page is the better one for my question, especially in light of all the connectivity problems I'm reading about for people who have upgraded to Leopard -
Can anyone suggest a good router to purchase that would work with no problems for a Mac Pro with Leopard?
Or, the other side of the coin - what routers have you personally had problems with?
I would be connecting to the router via an ethernet cable, but I'm looking specifically for a g and b router. I need to cover my roommate too - she has a Dell and she uses a wireless usb adapter to connect wirelessly. We have a modem (cable or DSL, I think?) and high-speed internet service.
We were previously using a Netgear router, but suddenly it won't work for more than 10-15 min before it loses connection after we reset it. And this happened before I updated to the Leopard.

Apple AirPort Extreme has served my mixed environment very well. You can buy a refurbished one from Apple and save some $.

  • MacBook Pro with SSD and HD

I didn't find a section for Time Machine, but since I have MacBook Pro (early 2011), I posted this question in this section.
I had a MBP (early 2008) and removed the DVD drive, put HD in the place of DVD, and installed an SSD in the HD location. I reinstalled Mac OS 10.6.x on the SSD, formatted the HD and I changed my user home directory to be under the HD via "Advanced Options" under Users in system prefrences. so in other words, OS on SSD and user home folders under HD.
I took a weekly Time Machine backup on my WD external drive.
The MacBook Pro died and I replaced it with MBP (early 2011). I did the same, removed DVD drive, repalce it with the HD and installed SSD in the HD location. I installed Mac OS X 10.6.7 on SSD. Now comes the issue part.
When I use "Migration Asssistant" (MA) to restore my user profile, and when I choose to restore from Time Machine, MA shows me 2 drives on the backup which is SSD and HD as expected.
The issue here is when I choose HD and I try to restore Users profile, MA checks free space on SSD and not HD and since my profile is larger than the SSD free space, it doesn't allow me to restore.
I tried to fool MA by creating the user first, point the home folder to HD and then try to restore, but still MA keeps checking only SSD free space to restore.
then I logged in as 'root', deleted my profile, used MA to restore SSD. I only choose users and settings from the restore, but not applications. After reboot I checked the users and it did creat my user and pointed the user home folder to HD, now I used MA again to restore to HD, but still the same issue.
I was carefull to use same exact drive names and usernames so Time Machine won't be confused.
So any idea how to force MA to restore my profile on HD instead of SSD?

Install the SSD in an enclosure and connect it to the MBP via USB.
Open Disk Utility>Erase and format the drive to Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
    Then select Disk Utility>Restore.
Drag the internal HDD to the Source field.  Drag the SSD to the Destination field.  Click on the Restore button.
This may take a few hours depending upon how much data has to be transferred.
When complete, Boot the MBP with the OPTION key.
Select the SSD and if it boots the MBP, swap the two drives.
    Ciao.

  • New Mac Pro with Thunderbolt and USB  3.0

it is exceedingly frustrating to be waiting with no surety that there will be an upgraded Thunderbolt and USB3.0 Mac Pro in the pipeline. professional doing advanced graphics and video need this and need it now and need for certain a time schedule to plan partial investment in new Equipment. Apple has let is down for two years now and surely the second largest corporation on the planet can afford the R and D for it and certainly it would cost the company nothing to let us in on this schedule. there is no real  competition for this. it is not giving away any advantage but it certainly would give is some ammunition to prevent bean counters from instituting a wholesale move to Dell or others. We need some serious upgrading and we need a heads up on when.

The iMac would require a Magma outboard PCIx box that doubles the cost of the IMac and still does not do the job. that approach is a kludge to try to use an amateur user machine to do what a professional workstation can  do, with The assorted updates I applied to my Mac Pro though it is not as fast at processing as the top of the line iMac it was much more flexible, can run many screens without having to buy new thunderbolt screens and with USB 3 and eSATA cards bypass reasonably the lack of Thunderbolt in the short term but it is a ridiculous and non Mac way to have to run,my work station. And..I am sure I am not alone...Apple better get their act together in the professional market or they will have kissed off many of is in another year.. that would be a huge pity. As well the iMac screen is insufficient and lacks a full Adobe colour palette and its incorrect black levels and inability to be controlled by such tools as a Huey make the screen good only for menus and control panels.  that is why I still use the Mac 30 inch and also a Dell 30 inch screen as they can be calibrated accurately which the iMac can not. the only solution is a new Mac Pro. for the contributor who suggested I contact feedback already regarding  this..I had done that but I figured that they must scan the discussion groups to find out what customers feel about user  situations and the more responses to my comments the better the argument for new hardware.

  • Webcam on 2008 Mac Pro with Bootcamp and Windows 7.  Cannot get it to work.

Have windows 7 Professional on my mac, using Bootcamp
I cannot get any webcam to work.
So far, I have used ....
A Logitech QuickCam Vision Pro for Mac. No app can detect it.
A Logitech C510 Webcam (for PC) No app can detect it.
An Agama V-2025 Webcam (for both Mac & PC and supposedly no additional drivers needed). No app can detect it.
I called Logitech and they said as it was too complicated for them to support, (i.e. Windows on a mac with bootcamp) and so they couldn't help.
Any ideas would be most appreciated.
    Thanks.

Use bootcamp. I have been a loyal Adobe guy for 12+ years, but now that I have upgraded to mac...Adobe just sucks. I have not been able to finish a project yet do to the shabby CS4 media encoder.

  • Mac Pro with X1900XT and video corruption

    Hi gentle people
My Mac Pro arrived a few days ago. It's a CTO with a X1900XT and Aperture and some other options (wireless, RAM, HDD).
I'm really excited about the package and the out-of-the-box experience but yesterday I noticed video corruption in Aperture. It looks like a repeating pattern of green and purple dots.
Today, I investigated further and I noticed these things:
-The dots are in the video memory (can be caught in a screenshot), so it's not a problem with the display.
-The dots can stick around everywhere on my screen, not only in Aperture.
-Google Earth and Quicktime both also display video corruption in the same way.
-The TechTool program from the Applecare disk doesn't find a problem. I guess this is because the memory problem is not situated in the frame buffer but somewhere else in the 512MB. For example, on a location where textures (for Google earth and Aperture) are stored.
-Temperature has no influence; the corruption is there even after a cold night and a cold boot (from power off).
-Apart from this, my system seems stable. No crashes yet and I have about 12 hours on the counter.
-Changing resolutions or SMC reset didn't do anything to improve the situation.
My conclusion: my X1900XT has a bad memory chip or is otherwise defective.
Lucky me; I also bought Applecare. I'll be calling them tomorrow to see what they'll do about this.
What is others people experience with this kind of problems?
Will they send me a good X1900XT by mail? Or will I have to bring in my computer? Arghhlll... Such a beauty with a little rough spot
    Kind regards
    Koen
    Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   Mac Pro - X1900XT - 4GB - 500GB - AE+BT - 30"CD

    Hi there kolson
That picture you're showing seems awfully familiar. It's the same kind of corruption as I'm seeing. Only I haven't had a single lockup yet.
I've been on the phone with Applecare this evening. It was a friendly guy who helped me through the basic stuff such as:
-Use the other DVI output on the video card
    -Use another monitor
-Log in as a different user
    -Reset PRAM
    -Reset SMC
-Apple hardware test (no problems found)
-Techtool deluxe from the Applecare cd (no problems found)
-He also asked me to boot in safe mode. I was unable to reproduce the problem this time but the machine, particularly graphics, were very slow. Aperture wouldn't even function correctly. I believe that in safe mode, no hardware acceleration is used so the video card is not stressed at all and the CPUs get to do all the drawing which is why the thing was so slow.
The call ended after this but I have a case number and will be calling tomorrow to see what to do next.
I stay with my previous conclusion: there's something wrong with the video card. It's clear that the display is of no importance because I can capture the dots in a screenshot.
Good luck! I'll try to keep this thread updated.

  • Disk System Prefs on a Mac Pro with SSD

I have recently installed an OWC 120 GB SSD on my Mac Pro in the 2nd Optical Bay and am using it as the boot disk. Should I leave the system prefs settings at the default, or should change them so that the disc does not go to sleep. I have had a few freezes when staying in one app for an extended period (Front Row watching movies, for example) and am guessing that the power down of the disks in the default settings is the culprit.
Unchecking the box seems to cure the problem, but imagine that the regular disks in bays 1-4 are now spinning. What is the answer.

Most likely it hung trying to spin down the SSD. You are better off disabling the spin down option anyway. Modern hard drives are designed to run all the time. The spin down option is just for energy saving or battery saving on a laptop.
The only time my drives stop spinning is if I turn off the computer. I haven't done that in since August and most likely won't until the end of April.

  • 10.6.4 Combo Update - Kernel Panic on 1st Gen Mac Pro with 8GB and ATI 4870

    Hi,
I installed the 10.6.4 combo update last night and now my system constantly kernel panics. It was fine with 10.6.3 for months and never kernel panicked.
    I have 4 x 2GB FB-Dimms and a ATI 4870 card.
The system is also only showing one display and I can force it to kernel panic by going to system preferences and selecting 'Detect Displays'.
Anyone got any suggestions before I reinstall back to 10.6.3?
    Thanks
    Paul

Hey guys. I have got a new Macbook Pro 13" model and I am getting kernel panics. I've been trying to partition the drive for Boot Camp and after I updated yesterday (to 10.6.4) i've been getting the kernel panic sign. Also, when I boot from my Snow Leopard disk to go into Disk Utility to repair the permissions (I opened Onyx and on the SMART check it said the permissions needed to be reset) I get a kernel panic and it crashes! So at the moment i've just backed up my work and I am panicking myself as I have no idea what to do from here.
    Any help would be appreciated!
