Mac Pro won't boot if firewire drives attached
New Mac Pro (OS X 10.4.8) won't boot if my two daisy-chained LaCie hard drives are attached (firewire 800).
I can upnplug 'em and the computer cranks right up; can then plug the drive back in and everything's fine. Wazzup?

Similar problem with iMacG5 - if two firewire drives on bus wouldn't boot. Worked with one but erratic, also long delays opening files, finder erratic and hanging. Decided it was probably a chipset problem with the firewire bus. Since upgrading firewire enclosures problem gone away (I hope). How old are the drive enclosures. Oxford911 firewire bus has some problems with newer macs and OS. May get information on bus in "about this mac/moreinfo/firewire", or in disk utility window ("applications/utilities/disk Utility") WHEN computer is booted up with drives running.
OK, a Plug for Macpower's IceCube enclosures, bloody expensive but since I upgraded no problems. Also wiebetech.com have some cool stuff including internal SATA adaptors/cages etc.for older G5's and dual cores

Early 2008 Mac Pro won't boot after installing 2nd DVD drive
All,
I purchased a Pioneer DVR-117D from Mac Sales and after installing it in my new refurbished 2008 Mac Pro it won't boot. My MP will boot if I remove the drive. According to the Mac Sales website this drive should work fine in my MP. Any ideas as to why this is happening. I literally just got my MP today and installed the drive. Is it the drive or the Mac Pro. Thank you all.The drive was set to master, I switched it to CS before I left for work but haven't tried reinstalling it. I will try when I get back and let you know if it worked. Thank you again.

My Mac Pro won't start. I press the "on" button, it clicks and about 2-3 seconds later it clicks again. Tried every trick I knew, but nothing will work.
Help!The traditional way to debug this is to remove EVERY item that could be pulling too much power, and try to get the CHIME. Then add an item at a time to get it working fully, or discover what is causing the problem.
Remove AC power and Remove:
All external devices
All PCIe cards including the graphics card.
All Hard drives
All Optical drives
All RAM DIMMs (note where they go)
With NO RAM DIMMs, you should get a Mac Pro that powers up, runs the fans, and flashes the power light (" Help I have not enough working RAM to continue").
Power off, then restore some RAM, and next Startup you should get the CHIME. The chime is generated in Software when the Power-On Self Test has completed without Error. If a source of software can be found, Booting is likely.
Then build up one item at a time. -
Old G4 won't boot from firewire drive
I have an older 400 MHz G4 running 10.3.9 and 10.1.5 which will not boot from a firewire system volume. Two system volumes (10.4) on the external drive appear as start up disk choices in the system preferences, but when selected the system displays a folder w/? upon restart and then the system boots from an OS 9 partition on one of the machines internal drives. This happens when the system is restarted from either of the computers boot partitions (10.3.9, 10.1.5). Don't know if this is a software or a hardware problem. Holding down the option key upon restart, even without the external OS 10.4 drive, produces same behavior. System info identifies the machine as a G3 but processor type as G4. It is one of the graphite colored Power Macs.

The G4 AGP and the iMac DV were the first Macs to be able to boot off Firewire.
It is interesting your Mac identifies itself as a G3. Now it is true that the early G4s were basically a G3 with a slightly modified logicboard and front and side panels (as well as the omission of the ADB port). But there are G4s inserted in some old Blue and White G3s by adventurous upgraders. The Blue and White G3 pictured here can't boot off Firewire either:

Mac Pro Won't Boot, Hard Drives Are Fine, Passes Hardware Test
I have a Mac Pro 1,1 that will not boot anymore. The hard drives are just fine. I put them into another Mac Pro 1,1 and they started up fine and that computer is running great. I have replaced the RAM, put in new Hard Drives, I only have a keyboard, mouse, and display plugged in to it, and it still won't boot. What happens is this:
Boots up, shows the gray screen. Shows Apple Logo. Goes to Black with mouse cursor, stays at the black screen. I can move the mouse cursor as normal. Sometimes it turns into a color wheel, but most of the time it's a normal pointer.
I have run the hardware test several times, both quick and extended. Everything always passes the tests. I can boot into target disk mode and use the disks fine via firewire. When I try to boot from a Lion USB disk, or a Snow Leopard DVD, it always does the same as above and stops at the black screen. Basically, once it gets to the point where it loads an OS X system, it stops at the black screen as if something isn't working right. That is the point at which the graphics card starts the Mac OS X loaded graphics Driver, and it may indicate that your graphics card is broken.
Try Safe Mode (hold down Shift at Startup). It takes five minutes to check the Boot drive, then display a login screen. You need your username and password to proceed, even if you normally auto-login.
Safe Mode uses only "simple" graphics. It does not load the graphics driver.
If you need a replacement card, I recommend you skip over all the refurbished and repaired old graphics cards and install nothing older than the Apple-Firmware 5770, about US$250. It works in every model Mac Pro, and drivers are in 10.6.5 and later. -
Mac Pro won't boot when a hard drive is in drive bay 1
I have a 2006 Mac Pro with a slight issue.
Whenever I put a drive in bay #1, the system will no longer boot.
I've removed all of my hard drives except my boot disk.
Placed it in drive bays 2,3 or 4, and it boots no problem.
When I place it in drive bay 1, the system won't go past the grey screen.
When I hold down the option key when booting with the drive in bay #1, the arrow pops up like I will have a choice of selecting the boot disk, but then no choices appear.
It's super strange. The computer is still working great, it is just a little annoying that one of my drive bays is no longer functional.
Any ideas?It seems the problem is not with the hard drive(s) since they work in another bay. So the thing to check is the power and SATA cabling from the bay to the motherboard. The SATA cables from the bay plug into the motherboard and perhaps has come loose, gotten dirty, or tarnished. Likewise the connector on the drive bay may be dirty or tarnished.
So my only suggestion is to check the cabling and connections.

New Mac Pro - won't boot up with SSD drives attached
I have a new Mac Pro. It came with the stock 1TB HD. I installed two OWC SSD drives in the two optical drive bays. I booted up and the MacPro saw the two new drives. I set up the two new drives into a RAID0 setup with Disk Utility which worked fine. Then I cloned the 'Macintosh HD' drive so that I could use the two new SSDs as my boot drive.
When I removed the stock 1TB drive the machine will not boot up. I am stuck on the gray startup screen and it never even makes it to the Apple logo.
Even worse, when I reconnect the stock 1TB drive the machine will still not boot up if either or both of the SSD drives are connected. When I remove the SSD drives the machine boots fine.
Very weird - must be some weird RAID stuff going on.
Any ideas?

Just out of interest, what application did you use to clone from your HDD to the OWC SSD?
I had the same problem, but I was using only one SSD, when I cloned from a VelociRaptor 300GB HDD to an OCZ Agility EX SSD in December 2009.
The SSD "bricked", and when I contacted OCZ they told me that they did not recommend cloning from a HDD to a SSD. In fact they definitely advised against doing so.
I had used SuperDuper to clone from the HDD to the SSD.
When I received the replacement SSD ( OCZ sent me their top of their range Vertex EX), I didn't take any chances, and I did a clean install of the Mac OS and all my applications.
Everything was 100% OK, and I have not had a single problem with the SSD since then, but I never clone to it or from it. I just use Time Machine to back up to a WD My Book SE II 2T external drive, but I do have the original 640GB Apple (WD) HDD as a backup/emergency system boot drive in an external enclosure.
I have just ordered, and received, an OWC MercuryExtreme Pro RE SSD, which I will be using as my system boot drive solely for my photography related applications, and I will use the Vertex EX for the remainder of my applications.
However, I am not even going to risk using SuperDuper to clone the OS or any of the applications from the Vertex EX to the OWC SSD, although OCZ said it was OK to clone from SSD to SSD, and I will do a clean install of the Mac OS and the photography related applications on the Mercury Extreme Pro RE SSD.
Hope all goes well when you receive your replacement SSD.
If in doubt do a clean install of the Mac OS!

Mac Pro won't boot after forced shutdown
Hi all, hopefully someone will be able to help with this.
This is a Mac Pro (don't have the exact spec right now, but will have later, I think it's a dual), which is used to run ProTools. It has no internet or network connections.
It's running OS X 10.5.8 and has been for quite a while with no problems. Nothing new has been installed recently (hardware or software).
The other night it was playing back a ProTools session and recording a mix of the result when it started behaving strangely. When ProTools is recording, it creates a waveform display of the recording as it goes, and this suddenly started being corrupted by what appeared to be bits of a photograph or video image. The owner tried to hit "Stop", but nothing would work. Mouse still moved, but no button response, keyboard shortcuts ineffective, and Force Quit did nothing, so in the end he had to kill it by holding down the power button.
Since then it won't boot normally, though it will boot into Safe Mode with no problem.
On a "normal" startup, it powers up, goes through the grey screen/Apple logo/spinning thing stage on the left monitor, then that one goes blue, then both monitors go blue for a few seconds and finally both screens go black, with a mouse pointer in the top left of the left screen. You can move the mouse all over both screens (though if you wait a few seconds it leaves a copy of the pointer in the top left), but that's as far as it gets. Disk activity continues for a while (maybe a minute or so) after the screens go to black, and the spinning rainbow thing comes and goes, but it then seems to give up.
Here's what I've tried so far:
Boot into Safe Mode - no problem
Verify disk using Disk Utility - no problem
Repair permissions - loads of screwed up stuff, all with "permission should be ?-----" . Repair didn't work. Finally fixed these by running the 10.5.8 combo updater twice (known issue with this updater), then repairing again. Permissions now come up clean.
Cleared all caches etc. using Cocktail - slight improvement. Before this it was sticking on the one blue screen stage.
Got rid of a few corrupt preference files using Cocktail (all last modified years ago) - no difference.
Reset PRAM and MBC - no difference
Tried booting with everything disconnected except one screen, keyboard and mouse - no difference.
I'm going over later to see if reseating cards/removing memory etc. will make any difference, and to see if it will fire up fom it's original 10.4.? CD.
Beyond that, I'm kind of out of ideas, so I figured I'd see if anyone else had any!
Below is (what I think!) is the relevant bit of the log file, showing a failed boot, forced power off and reboot intoSafe Mode.
Any clues to corrupt files etc. in there?

Yes, I did resolve it - it was the graphics card. Changed that, updated OS X and it was done.
I can't now remember exactly which card I used, and I'm away at the moment so I can't get to the infomation, but I do remember that it was a full length card with a large heatsink, and was a bit of a pig to squeeze into the chassis!
Had to buy an adaptor for the second monitor connection, but that didn't cause any hassle. I got the card and cable from the local Apple Store.
It also theoretically needed a later version of OS X than was already there, but since it allowed me to boot off the CD, that didn't matter (and it worked with the old one anyway, as it turned out).
Oh, and also of course, although it's a bog standard PC card, you have to pay way over the odds for it because it has to have different PROMS for a Mac. (Thank you Apple.) Just part of the price we all have to pay for using Macs.
I seem to remember that there was a certain amount of dancing involved in upgrading the OS afterwards (might have had to do one step twice), but nothing that unusual.

So I've read through every post on a ton of websites about this problem and nothing I tried worked. Today I started my computer up as an external firewire drive (holding 't' as it was booting) and it worked normal. However, several hours later I tried it on another computer and for some reason it didn't show up on the other computer. I restarted it and tried it again - no luck. I disconnected the cables and then just booted up like normal and all of a sudden my Macbook Pro took like 1 min longer to boot up than normal (1 min 52 sec). Also, my computer wouldn't shut down - it got stuck on my bg after clearing the finder.
I proceeded to follow all of the advice I found online: I reset the PRAM and SMC (taking out the battery, disconnecting the power cord, holding power button for 7 s, reconnecting everything), deleted the cache in my home/library/cache, and even repaired the disk and disk permission via the install disk (also repairing disk permission after booting up to see if that would do anything). Somewhere along the way my computer decided that it could now shut down normally (well - it turns off within like 5 - 7 seconds but if I close the lid the little sleep light remains on for another 10...is that normal?) - but I still have the two problems: slow startup and not showing up as an external firewire drive on another computer.
Anyone have any ideas - or do I totally have to reinstall Mac OS X?So tried the previous post and it didn't work. I got fed up so I did an archive install of Leopard using the install disc and the problem STILL won't go away...what else can I possibly do? I thought that was the last resort? Thanks...

I've had my mac pro for a little over a year now, never had any problems until this weekend. I was in the middle of playing Mass Effect 2 on my windows 7 drive and all of it sudden it glitched out. Turned it off and tried booting again and on the windows side the first windows logo during boot won't even come up (just a black screen) and it will keep restarting. On my OSX drive it starts loading, the little circle under the apple is spinning around but, as soon as it seems like it's done and it should load up my desktop the screen goes all retro with black, orange, yellow lines. Then it goes back to the OSX loading screen with the circle but, it is no longer spinning and is frozen there.
I'm hoping that my video card just crapped out and I need to replace that since it appears to only have problems when it needs to output video other than basic start up screens. Possibly someone here has come across this before or knows what I need? I'd greatly appreciate any suggestions."glitches" don't really point to why.
Memory leak, BSOD, graphic driver (rather than card), heat, even lack of UPS and a "power event."
Backups for both systems, a must.
Boot into Safe Mode or Recovery mode on Windows.
Restore from last good known restore point.
Sounds like each system is on its own hard drive so it shouldn't have hit both, and you can pull out either or both to fix one.
As for OS X, never "leave home" without Disk Warrior and SuperDuper.
Makes it easy to restore and rebuild.
I'd say turning off has to be one of those "last resort" and more likely to make matters worse, but first step would be to boot from alternate media and not touch the system if possible you were on.
Sounds like OS X has corrupt journal and directory at this point, and it really can't heal itself. -
Mac Pro Won't Boot from any HDD
My system:
2008 8-core Mac Pro running 10.6.8 Snow Leopard
4 HDDs installed, 2 of them are a striped RAID 0 that is the bootup volume, a couble of external hard drives (1 of them a bootable clone), a DVI display
backed up with Time Machine; thanks for the concern.
Problem:
I came home one day, and my computer was acting funny. It was fine earlier in the day. Time Machine had failed a backup, an AFP mount had unmounted with an error, Dropbox was trying to sync but couldn't because of bad access permissions for a file, and Terminal wouldn't open, giving me a message about an invalid shell. I restarted, and it failed to restart, so I turned it off. I thought it was a corrupt filesystem (and striping is unstable, so it would make sense), but no, no other bootable disks worked.
Boot chime plays, grey screen comes up with Apple logo, wheel spins forever.
ATI graphics card fan runs pretty fast after a minute or so.
Light is solid, not blinking to indicate a RAM problem.
What I've tried:
Googled the problem. Got results about MacBook Pros. Did "-MacBook" in the search. Got similar questions but no solutions for my Mac.
Tried booting from an install DVD and the clone. Same thing happened.
Reset the PRAM (twice). No effect.
Reset the SMC (twice). No effect.
Unplugged the monitor. Graphics card fan wasn't loud, but the computer still wouldn't boot.
Unplugged all USB and FireWire devices. No effect.
Left the computer unplugged for an hour, which also resets the SMC. Who knows, this sometimes works! It didn't.
Any ideas?Booting in Safe Mode did not help, but it did show a grey circle with a cross through it instead of an Apple logo like before.
I remembered that there's an Apple Hardware Test (a bit hard to figure out how to do on your specific machine ), and I booted into it. Before I even ran the test, it told me that there is an error. The error message was just the name of one of my RAM slots. So... a piece of RAM might be dead. I ran the extended test, and it was halfway through after 30 minutes, but I stopped it because I don't have enough time. I have to continue this tomorrow.
As for the GPU, its fans might just be running because the system runs them at a high level by default when it's in certain states. I know older Macs did this in Target Disk Mode with every fan, and the GPU fan was running during the AHT too. At least I hope this is the case. Right now, it seems beyond a hard drive problem. Maybe booting from a DVD works because it only uses 1 RAM slot or something. I'd much rather have a piece of inexpensive RAM be dead than my GPU, and besides, I've kinda wanted to upgrade the RAM anyway. -
Mac Pro won't boot up, not even in safe mode.
Problem: Mac Pro having severe lag issues. Added more ram, removed Kona3, etc., nothing. Tried repairing with disc warrior but unable to repair startup disc unless booted from disc warrior disc. Won't boot up from disc warrior disc so set startup disc to the disc warrior disc. Now comp won't boot up, not even from safe mode. Any suggestions?
Boot from your OS X install DVD.
You always need to have a 2nd backup you can boot from, or an emergency (only) boot drive.
Disk Warrior does not have 10.5.2+.
If you can't do anything, zap pram, see if that helps. Or pull your drives and boot from your DVD. Setup OS X on a FW drive.
And of course, always always have at least two backup sets of your system; and sets of your data - so one set at least is always off line.

Early 2008 mac pro won't boot from hdd when ssd is installed
I have Mountain Lion 10.8.3 installed on my 1TB HDD in my early 2008 mac pro. That is the only OS install on my mac. I have an OWC SSD formatted but left as an empty drive that I am trying to use but when it's installed my mac hangs on the blank gray screen.
My mac cold boots fine and runs fine when the SSD is *not* installed. When I shut down and put the SSD into a drive bay the mac does seem to boot ok the first time, but when the computer is off for a while it will not boot. It just hangs on the blank gray screen (no apple logo). As soon as I pull out the SSD, the computer boots fine and runs fine again. I am not trying to boot off the SSD, I am booting off the HDD. The correct drive (1tb hdd) is selected in startup disk.
OWC has been helping me and I have tested 3 SSD's. So it does not appear to be a problem with their drive.
The mac will boot into safe mode with the SSD installed. It will boot if I choose the boot drive with the option key at startup.
Mountain Lion was clean installed.
Could it be some sort of library pref or cache issue?
Any recommendations on what to try?A HT does not find a lot of errors.
It doesn't look for bad sectors or directory or file problems.
Clone your SSD now that you have a clean OS and has the Apple updates on it. Before you make changes.
Install TRIM Enabler 2.2+ on it and any boot volume, to enable TRIM and so that Disk Utility's Repair Disk will trim cells. Mountain Lion Recovery won't which is a shame, so...
Clone and keep bootable backup clone of your system to use for maintenance.
A really bad directory on a system drive will cause interference from booting.
SSDs really need extra care, and even with TRIM, to be repaired from time to time and couple times a year, to do an erase and restore from a current image.
Of course Mac OS system even iwth apps is small and doesn't need to have any data or media and fits on 120GB usually just fine and still have a good enough amount free so TRIM and Garbage Collection can work properly and not get low on free pages. But 20GB free should be the minimum free, and better to have more, at least whatever total amount is written out in a month. -
Radeon 5770 in 2008 Mac Pro, won't boot - hangs at Apple logo screen??
Okay, so I had the Radeon 2600 XT and it kept giving me issues with pink & white checkerboards and freezing, then eventually wouldn't let me boot past the white/grey apple logo loading screen. Now, today I installed Apple Radeon 5770, just installed, got the MiniDisplay to DVI-D adapter and everything, but it STILL won't let me get past the white/grey apple screen! I can't seem to get the DVD drive to open either. Both of my hard drives have been working fine and I've even swapped slots and i still can't get past the white screen! What gives? I just dropped over $300 for this, so you can imagine my dismay and frustration. Can someone please help me with some ideas? Would be GREATLY appreciated.

MYeah, ok thanks for the response about the screen! So, I don't have 10.6.5. I'm running 10.5.8, which the Radeon 5770 says it needs 10.6.5, but -finally- I got my computer to boot up with the 5770 in it, on 10.5. Al I did was hold OPTION+ Power button and it took me to a blue screen, then to my 500 GB new HD. I then switched over to my other username on Macintosh HD (drive that came with the MacPro) and OSX loads fine! I can tell that it still needs to be on 10.6.5, so I can download the drivers because the text is ever so slightly fuzzy, and the color isn't tuned well (too much contrast) and images take a little longer to load/ are a bit laggy. I'm just glad it's up and running! No more pink transparent checkerboards, and loud *** fan sounds! I am wondering though, what was causing this hold up? Is it only booting up because I have the 10.5.2 install disc in the SuperDrive? I almost don't want to take it out and try without it, after the trouble i've had, just in case lol. I'd like to have an idea as to why, because I don't want to mask a problem, and have it eventually turn into a catastrophe.

MacBook won't boot off Firewire drives
i just got a MacBook and couldn't be more pleased but i just tried to use the Firewire drive to boot from but it doesn't show up as option for restart. the drives( i tried two) are loaded with 10.4.10 and show up on the desktop and work fine but it's odd the Mac won't boot from them. had no issue connecting to my Pismo. both show up as start up discs. i looked in the forums but didn't see this issue brought up. a little help please.

Yup. Alternatively, you can 'clone' the MB's internal hd to the external firewire hd. Two of the most widely used methods of achieving this are:
