Mac pro won't do VGA

I just upgraded to a Mac Pro, dual core 3.0, 2008 model, I don't ahve any more info then that currently, I can't see inside my puter. My vga monitor does't work on the DVI connections on the display card. I am using the simple dvi-vga adapter, but there is no display at all. I did a little reading, thee are 2 kinds of dvi, digital and integrated, the digital will not fire up the vga, however I don't know what I have. Anybody know something?
thanks....
scott

Oh, sorry, I thought you were adding a vga as a second monitor.
This is a tough one since you are basically running blind.
Here's a desparation shot (because I don't have any immediate ideas on this now).  With the monitor connected try doing a smc and pram reset.  Probably won't do anything but like I said it's a deperation shot in the dark.
The problem I think here is the displays prefs need to be set for that vga, but you can't set it without seeing it, catch-22, chicken and egg.
If you could borrow someone's DVI monitor that would probably come right up.  Then you could setup your vga and return the dvi monitor (assuming you can use both video card ports -- what video card do you have -- for 2008 mac pro it is probably a 2600 XT or 8800 GT which I think have two DVI ports).

  • Mac Pro won't network after 10.5.8 combo update

I just ran the 10.5.8 combo updater and since then my Mac Pro won't connect to my home network. It accesses the internet just fine, but I cannot connect wirelessly to my Macbook or my wifi printer anymore. My Macbook which is still on 10.4.11 can connect to the wifi printer and the internet, but cannot connect to my Mac Pro anymore. I've seen posts about pulling ktxt files out of the 10.5.7 updater, but that doesn't seem to address my issue. Any ideas? Thanks

  • Went on my vacation, brought my macbookpro, got home, mac pro won't acknowledge photos.  Why?

Wife uses the macbookpro mostly with her iphone.  However, they are my photos on my phone, and all computers are mine, so why in any case because I have synced with another computer with also uses another iphone, that my personal mac pro won't acknowledge the photos that originated from my phone.  Photos shouldn't be subject to copyright like music purchases.  If I decide to share my photos with another mac (which also happens to be my macbookpro that my wife uses), there shouldn't be anything applied to the photos I've taken with my personal iphone once it is plugged into my other mac.  They're my photos regardless and originated from my iphone, so my mac pro should never block these photos from me in iphoto.
    Summary:
I go on vacation with my macbookpro.
I take photos with my iphone.  I put them in my macbookpro while on vacation.
I get home.  I try to put the photos on my macpro.  Not only am I not allowed, I can't even see the photos in iphone via my plugged in iphone.  They are hidden when plugged into my macpro.
Why don't I have access to MY OWN PHOTOS when I have spent well over 50,000 dollars in Apple products?
To fix this I had to export the photos from the macbookpro to a USB and manually add them to my mac pro.  Alternatively I could plug in my iphone to my windows computer and access all the files via a folder search.

Another way to look at this which imo also applies.
I go on vacation with friend.  I take photos with my iphone.  I sync some of the photos to his iphoto on his macbook.  I get home.
I can no longer see those photos, which I took, using my own iphoto sync on my mac.  They don't show up anywhere with preview or image capture (remembered name).  Just because I gave my friend some of my photos, doesn't mean a lock should be applied that doesn't allow me to sync those photos via iphoto on my own mac.  Doesn't this make sense?  Why is this happening?

  • Mac pro won't read windows 7 install disc?

My 2007 mac pro won't read windows 7 install disc. My macbook reads the disc fine, so it is not a problem with the disc. It is 32-bit. The apple help line suggested firewire connecting the macbook to the macpro and starting the macbook in target disc mode, but other posts I have read have said that this will not solve the issue. Any suggestions?

Could be. I just rebooted and it read the disc. Unfortunately the windows install got interrupted and I had to reboot, and now it wont read the disc again. Is there any other way to install windows 7 to bootcamp, other than from the disc? Can I use FireWire and target disc my MacBook (the MacBook reads the disc just fine)?

  • My Mac Pro won't connect to Wifi?

My Mac Pro won't connect to the Wifi that it has been for the past 2+ years. All other devices in our home that use the same Wifi are working just fine.

Tried doing Network Diagnostics multiple times, did not work. Keeps saying it can't connect or times out.
What color was the light pertaining to Wifi in the left column?  Red, Green, or Yellowish/Orange?
Some of the following you may have already tried:
    Try the basics first:
Change your router channel number.  Most times this works & is all you have to do.
Disconnect & reconnect your modem.  unplug it for about 10 seconds.  Plug it back in.  Do the same for Apple’s routers.  Wait for everything to reboot.
    System Preferences>Network
    Click the Assist Me button.
In the next window that pops up, click the Diagnostic button & do the necessary.

  • Mac Pro won't recognize ethernet connection

My Mac Pro won't recognize the Ethernet cable when it's plugged in. I know the cable and connection are good because my MacBook Pro recognizes it with no problem. I've had it for around a year, but have always used the airport to connect to the internet. It has two Ethernet ports on the back and I've tried both. Is there anything I need to do to configure the NIC card?
    Thanks in advance!
    Ryan

No, but you do need to configure the Ethernet port in Network preferences. Open Network preferences and select the Ethernet port. Click on the Advanced button then on the TCP/IP tab. Set the Configure IPv4 drop down menu to DHCP. Set the Configure IPv6 drop down menu to Off. Click on the Apply button. If all is well you should see a valid IP address in the network settings for the port. If you see an IP address starting with 169., then it means your Ethernet port is not getting an IP address from your router. You should have an Ethernet cable connected from the Ethernet port on the computer to one of the LAN ports on your router.

  • Start Up hangs - My Mac Pro won't turn on

After upgrading, my Mac Pro won't start up.  Does any one else have this problem...   I can't get my Mac to start up...  HELP!

More information on what the 'upgrade' was and which MacPro would be helpful.  With that said -
If it worked before the upgrade and does not work now, the first thing I would do is think about what changes were made.  If hardware, is/are the component(s) installed the proper ones, designed for Macs and for you Mac?  If satisfied with the components being the right ones, I would look at the installation process.  Is everything seated properly and in the correct location?  Are any power cables connected?  Were ESD protocols followed?  Next I would run the Hardware Test included on the Installation Disk.  Reporting those results here may help.  (Note: this may not find a video card problem).

    Help!

The traditional way to debug this is to remove EVERY item that could be pulling too much power, and try to get the CHIME. Then add an item at a time to get it working fully, or discover what is causing the problem.
    Remove AC power and Remove:
    All external devices
All PCIe cards including the graphics card.
    All Hard drives
    All Optical drives
All RAM DIMMs (note where they go)
With NO RAM DIMMs, you should get a Mac Pro that powers up, runs the fans, and flashes the power light (" Help I have not enough working RAM to continue").
Power off, then restore some RAM, and next Startup you should get the CHIME. The chime is generated in Software when the Power-On Self Test has completed without Error. If a source of software can be found, Booting is likely.
Then build up one item at a time.

  • Mac Pro won't wake from prolonged sleep in Mountain Lion

My Mac Pro won't wake from sleep after it is in sleep mode for several hours at a time.  It will wake if the sleep period is short.  But if it sleeps overnight it will not wake the next morning.  Nothing seems to work.  It requires a hard restart.  I am running OS X 10.8.2.  I read in another site that this problem was fixed for Macbook Air and Macbook Pro by turning off hibernate mode in Terminal.  But I doubt this would help with my Mac Pro.
    Any thoughts or ideas?
    Thanks.

  • Mac Pro won't use 1920x1200 (VGA)

I have an Asus MK241 with a native resolution of 1920x1200/60hz. It's connected to an 8-port KVM that only supports VGA.
I bought a new Mac Pro and it refuses to let me run the display at 1920x1200. The best I can do is 1680x1050. I have it connected with a miniDisplayPort to VGA adapter. The Mac doesn't seem to have any problem retrieving the EDID.
Using DVI isn't an option. I don't have this problem with my older Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard or any of my Linux/Windows systems connected to the KVM.
For a $10K computer this is pretty disappointing.
    I'm all out of ideas.

    Good luck.
Been there, done that, a long time before even posting here. The only additional resolution it gives me is 1920x1080.
I even tried overriding the EDID based on what I found here
    http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/106933/mavericks-not-able-to-use-extern al-display-at-full-resolution
Even though that issue involves miniDisplayPort-DisplayPort adapter instead of miniDisplayPort-VGA I figured it was worth a shot. It didn't have any effect, though.
I did veryify that it works correctly if I use a miniDisplayPort-DVI adapter and DVI cable. But DVI isn't an option, for reasons I don't want to go into here.
