Mac Pro won't recognize ethernet connection

My Mac Pro won't recognize the Ethernet cable when it's plugged in. I know the cable and connection are good because my MacBook Pro recognizes it with no problem. I've had it for around a year, but have always used the airport to connect to the internet. It has two Ethernet ports on the back and I've tried both. Is there anything I need to do to configure the NIC card?
Thanks in advance!
Ryan

No, but you do need to configure the Ethernet port in Network preferences. Open Network preferences and select the Ethernet port. Click on the Advanced button then on the TCP/IP tab. Set the Configure IPv4 drop down menu to DHCP. Set the Configure IPv6 drop down menu to Off. Click on the Apply button. If all is well you should see a valid IP address in the network settings for the port. If you see an IP address starting with 169., then it means your Ethernet port is not getting an IP address from your router. You should have an Ethernet cable connected from the Ethernet port on the computer to one of the LAN ports on your router.

I can't establish Fire Wire communication in FCP 7.0.3 between the device which is Canon HD 20 and my new late 2010 Mac Pro. There is no problem communicating between old MP 2006 and MBP 2008. The new MP has only FireWire 800 ports but that shouldn't make any difference, should it?. There must be something in the late 2010 MP which prevents the communication using FireWire although I can use old iSight.

  • My Mac Pro won't recognize my JVC Everio Micro SD Camcorder

    Hello,
I have a JVC Everio Micro SD Camcorder, and my Mac Pro can't recognize it, I think I need a driver from JVC, but I can't find the download link, anyone have a clue?

You posted in the "Intel iMac" Forum.  I would suggest you try reposting in the "Mac Pro Forum".
    Hope this helps

  • Mac Pro won't recognize Cintiq 21UX DVI monitor

The Cintiq works ok when connected, but is listed in the sysytem profiler and monitor preference panel as just "VGA display". It is hooked up to the mac with a DVI cable and the switch on the Cintiq is set to DVI.
I have a feeling I'm getting poor resolution from graphics apps (esp. Photoshop CS3) as a result of this.
Can anyone tell me why the Cintiq isn't recognized for what it is?

    Malcolm, thanks so much.
I was just having this problem with the Cintiq as VGA monitor, and would NEVER have looked in the box for that adapter. And even looking at the adapter in my hand, I could not really see what was particularly different about it. But I used it and, as reported, it worked like a charm.
The funny thing was that I had been using the Cintiq on my Power Mac G5 for about a month, with no problems, EXCEPT when I pulled the computer out of Sleep, and then suddenly the Cintiq went VGA on me. I'd reboot and all was corrected. BUT the real problem came up tonight, I am just setting up a new Mac Pro, and the Cintiq was just VGA all the way, boy was that frustrating. I was dumbfounded. It's Sunday night, and where the heck am I going to find a clue about all this. Well, the Discussion Forum wins again!
    Thanks again

  • Mac Pro won't recognize airport card or existing network

I have a 2007 Macbook in the house with an old Belkin MIMO router. the wireless netwrok works fine. In fact, my son waltzes in and says "hey what's the wireless password?" and logs on INSTANTLY on his Macbook Pro.  Now we have a (desktop) Mac Pro with a new Airport Extreme card, and the Mac Pro cannot find the network - it's only 5 feet away. The name of the network does not appear where the network names should populate. We've typed it, and the WPA password in 100 times, and nothing, justs keeps asking the same question. Filling in PPPOE info doesn't work either.
NOTE: We do NOT have the airport extreme base at this house. We simply want the Mac Pro to FIND the existing network (Belkin wireless router and good old Airport on the 2007 Macbook so the Mac Pro can get on the internet wirelessly.
Anyone have any ideas? Is the bios just not recognizing the new Airport Extreme card? How should it be configured?
    Thank you!

There are four tiny black wires inside, three of which must be correctly connected to the AirPort card before you have any hope of connection over wireless.
Stay away from PPPoE unless you have been told by your ISP that there is no other possible way to log on to the internet.
    Turn OFF IPv6 if possible.
If the card is functioning, you get an Airport/WiFi pane in System Preferences > Network. You will also see it in System Profiler.

  • Mac Pro won't recognize USB devices

    Hi all,
My Mac Pro does not seem to recognize cameras (Canon Vixia and GoPro White) or card readers (USB 2.0).  When I restart the computer, it recognizes the Vixia, but automatically opens iTunes, where it's not intuittive how to copy just the folder to an external hard drive.  Why is this?  Is there a fix?  I tried running the firmware update, but received an alert that the update was not compatible with my machine.
    I'm using a 3.7 GHZ Quad-Core Intel Xeon E5 with 16 GB RAM, running OS 10.9.3.

I had a similar problem that arose because Apple over-rode the original USB drivers with a kernal extension.
UNloading the extension fixed my problems. Perhaps it will help you.
    In a terminal, type this:
    sudo kextunload -b com.apple.driver.AppleUSBFTDI
If it solves your problem, keep in mind you'll have to do it after every reboot (a good use for command line history.)
If it doesn't, you can put it right back with this:
    sudo kextload -b com.apple.driver.AppleUSBFTDI
Hope that helps. I should also warn you that in my experience, 10.9.3's USB performance is terrible.

  • Mac Pro won't recognize i-pod nano (2nd generation)

when i hook my nano (2nd gen) up to my mac pro, it opens in i-tunes, but it's all grayed out. it charges, but i can't play anything off of it, and i can't drag anything from i-tunes on to it. also, i noticed my i-pod icon doesn't appear on the desktop when plugged in. i've reset this i-pod to the factory settings and it doesn't change anything. i've also held down the menu/select button for a few seconds (per other discussion threads i've read) and it doesn't solve the issue. finally, i've restarted my computer with the i-pod still attached and nothing changes.
this product may have originally been set up through a PC, but i don't see that being part of the issue.
    any suggestions, guys?

I have the same problem with my 2G nano and MacBook Pro. This ipod has never been connected to a PC, so I don't think that's the issue.

  • Mac Pro fails to find ethernet connection after sleep

My 2.66 Nehalem MP goes to sleep just fine. The problem is every time I re-awake the machine, it never finds the ethernet connection. I have to log out and log back in for it to reacquire the connection.
This isn't a problem when I sleep on the Mac side so doesn't seem to be purely hardware related. Any ideas what's wrong?

Sorry, I realized I posted this in the wrong place ... moving posting to the networking secgtion.

  • My bran new Mac Pro, won't recognize my external hard drive?

    Hello,
I just got the new mac pro about a month ago (the cylindrical kind) it has 16 MGs of ram and 250 GBs. I got a 2 TB external hard drive for time machine, and i already have a 500 GB portable hard drive for transferring files. They worked fine initially, but the computer has stopped seeing them all together. I've already restarted my computer several times. I plug them in, they light up, but the icon doesn't appear on the desktop or finder or even in disk utility. I've tested my portable drive on my laptop and it works fine, so its not the external hard drive or the cords. I also tested a flash drive and an external CD drive in the USB ports and they work fine, so i've deduced that its not a hardware issue. The best i can come up with is that its a softwear issue, but i have no idea how that would even work. Has anyone else heard of this?
On a side note: before the computer stopped reading my hard drives, they kept unplugging themselves and saying "this hard drive was not removed properly" and then they would reappear without me touching them. I'm pretty sure this is the root of the problem. I'm out of ideas and google hasn't revealed anything to me, so if anyone knows whats going on i would really appreciate it.
    Thanks.

Neither hard drive is working on the mac pro. They do not appear in disk utility.
My chords seem fine. I don't have another cable to try on the Mac Pro. but both cables worked on my 2011 macbook pro with my external hard drive. my 2TB didn't work on my macbook pro however... it didn't even appear in disk utility. I wonder though if that has to do with the usb 3. I know my laptop has USB 2 and my external hard drive is USB 3 and i'm not sure if its backwards compatible.
I have tried all of the USB ports on the Mac Pro, the hard wear seems fine.
I will try resetting the SMC shortly and see if that works.

  • Ethernet-Connected ATV-2 Won't Recognize Ethernet-Connected PwrMac G4

    Hey all,
My Power Mac G4, which is connected to a Belkin router (Play Model F7D4302) via an ethernet cable, is not detected through Home Sharing by my Apple TV 2.
(It's probably worth noting that the G4 has stopped appearing on my wireless network altogether. It used to play flawlessly with my MacBook Air and my Apple TV , but recently it has stopped becoming available through Home Share. I can only conclude it has something to do with the Belkin router, as I did not have this problem before I bought the thing.)
I've gone through the rudimentary processes you would try early on - restarted the router, my Power Mac, my MacBook Air and the Apple TV, as well as put factory restore settings on my router.
I've noticed when I connect the Apple TV wirelessly it bonds effortlessly to my MacBook Air, but when I connect the Apple TV via ethernet, it no longer recognizes the Air (which is still on wireless) or the G4 (which is hardwired).
What's going on here? Any tips or suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated, as I'm currently trying to curb my addiction to Psych by watching it on my hi-def TV via Apple TV!

The devices must be connected to the same network.
Apparently the Wi-Fi and Ethernet are not the same network.

Ok, fair enough.  But since Job's death - Apple's control on leaks has been terrible.  I got the new iPhone, and I like it - but it hasn't made nearly as big as an impression as previous ones.  Because of the vast ammount of leaks.  With the iPad mini leaks, it's 99% sure to come out next week.
Apple uses many manufacturers and it's massive also websites prefer to report on Apple whether true or false because it brings more hits.
Amd by "others" I meant other people on iPads - not other devices/manufacturers.  It's possible to do so, I just want to know how.  I honestly don't think we'll ever be in a Post-PC era until all tablets allow us to use USB in the way computers do.
No, USB is not the future, you missed the memo about cloud and wireless computing?

  • My Mac Pro won't connect to Wifi?

My Mac Pro won't connect to the Wifi that it has been for the past 2+ years. All other devices in our home that use the same Wifi are working just fine.

Tried doing Network Diagnostics multiple times, did not work. Keeps saying it can't connect or times out.
What color was the light pertaining to Wifi in the left column?  Red, Green, or Yellowish/Orange?
Some of the following you may have already tried:
    Try the basics first:
Change your router channel number.  Most times this works & is all you have to do.
Disconnect & reconnect your modem.  unplug it for about 10 seconds.  Plug it back in.  Do the same for Apple’s routers.  Wait for everything to reboot.
    System Preferences>Network
    Click the Assist Me button.
In the next window that pops up, click the Diagnostic button & do the necessary.

  • Mac Pro won't network after 10.5.8 combo update

I just ran the 10.5.8 combo updater and since then my Mac Pro won't connect to my home network. It accesses the internet just fine, but I cannot connect wirelessly to my Macbook or my wifi printer anymore. My Macbook which is still on 10.4.11 can connect to the wifi printer and the internet, but cannot connect to my Mac Pro anymore. I've seen posts about pulling ktxt files out of the 10.5.7 updater, but that doesn't seem to address my issue. Any ideas? Thanks

  • After updating to mountain lion on my mac pro I am unable to connect my g-raid

After updating to mountain lion on my mac pro I am unable to connect my g-raid 1T external hard drive using the firewire connection? I have 4 places to plug the firewire into, none work. All ports used to work with Snow leopard?

    Try this:
Boot into Safe Mode then restart normally.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Lion/Mountain Lion
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
If this does not work to fix the problem, then:
Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
