Mac Pro won't sleep when I want it to

Hello all
I have a 2006 Mac Pro (1,1) running 10.7.5, 8GB RAM and an 8800GT video card.   It also has a Sonnet USB card and a Sonnet e-SATA card.  Lately, the computer has not been going to sleep when I set it to in the Energy Saver preferences panel.  If I set it to sleep after a certain amount time (say, 10 minutes), it doesn't.  AND if I set it to "Never Sleep" - it does.  This is a new one for me, as I have usually seen machines not go to sleep, but never a mac that does sleep when told to "never".  It is frustrating, because it seems that whenever I want the computer to stay awake (for a lengthy download or a Time Capsule backup), it won't.  And when I want it to sleep because I got called away from the computer, it doesn't.
I've run permission repair and I've looked at the console log.  Last night I set it to "never sleep" so I could do an initial backup (wirelessly, so it would take a few hours).  When I woke up, the machine was sleeping peacefully.  Here are the log entries for when it fell asleep and woke up:
5/17/13 11:25:27  PM  kernel:  ASP_TCP asp_SetTCPQoS:  sock settclassopt got error 57
5/17/13 11:25:27 PM   kernel:  ASP_VFS afpfs_DoRecoonect:  connect on /Volumes/Time Capsule failed 49
5/17/13 11:25:27 PM   kernel:  AFP_VFS afpfs_DoReconnect:  sleep for 1 seconds and try again
7:49:14  AM  kernel:  Wake reason:  EHCI
There are a lot of those "error 57" and "sleep for 1 seconds and try again" messages.  My uneducated guess is that somehow the Time Capsule went to sleep in the middle of the backup, but that wouldn't explain why the Mac went to sleep when it was set not to.
Can anyone please help?  Thanks!
Richard

Test after each of the following steps that you haven’t already tried:
Step 1
Take all the steps suggested in this support article.
Step 2
From the menu bar, select
 ▹ System Preferences ▹ Print & Scan ▹ Open Print Queue
Check all printers for unfinished jobs. Deal with any you find.
Step 3
 ▹ System Preferences ▹ Sharing: uncheck all boxes.
Step 4
Reboot and see whether there's any change.
Step 5
Reset the SMC.
Step 6
Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal. Don’t launch any applications at first. If sleep still doesn’t work properly, back up all data and reinstall the OS. After that, if you still have the issue, make a “Genius” appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.
If sleep now works as expected, go on to the next step.
Step 7
Still in safe mode, launch the usual set of applications that are running when you have the problem, including your login items, one at a time, testing after each one. Some applications may not work; skip them. You might be able to identify the cause of the problem this way.
Step 8
If sleep is still working after you’ve launched all the usual applications, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and test again. If sleep still works, you’re done, at least for the moment.
If you still have the sleep issue after booting out of safe mode, post again.

  • MacBook Pro won't sleep when charging

My 15" i5 MacBook Pro won't sleep when charging; a reboot of the machine solves the problem temporarily, but it always recurs.  When I close the lid and listen carefully, I can hear hard drive activity; the drive sounds like it keeps spinning up every 10 seconds or so.
This is not an issue when trying to sleep when running on the battery only. Any advice?

  • MacBook Pro won't sleep when lid is closed and battery lights won't work?

I have a 2010 MacBook Pro 15" and ever since I got it, the battery indicator lights wouldn't light up (not that big of a deal) and the computer wouldn't sleep when I closed the lid.
I've reset the NVRAM/PRAM, the SMC and verified/repaired my hard disk as needed.  But the computer still won't sleep when I close the lid (regardless if the machine is plugged into a charger or not).  Is there a known fix for this problem?  I've been searching through the forums and troubleshooting from advice that other people have suggested, but nothing seems to be working.  Any help is greatly appreciated!

This exact thing happened to me. Resetting the SMC solved all my problems. Here's a link to how to do it: Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) Hope it works!

  • Macbook Pro won't sleep when lid shuts or hit sleep

    Hey Everyone,
So after the latest update my Macbook pro no longer immediately sleeps after shutting the lid. It also won't sleep when 'sleep' is hit in the apple menu. It's actually really annoying as I need it for security.
Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

    Try Reset SMC.  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

  • My mac pro won't sleep on its own or when I try to put it to sleep.

    Hello all,
I have a 2007 Mac Pro and for some reason, it won't go to sleep.  Normally if it was idle for an hour or two, it would automatically sleep but not anymore.  If I put it to sleep manually, it wakes right back up.  I have to shut it down so the hard drives don't spin all night long.  I'm not sure what's causing this.  I tried unplugging all the USB devices and plugging them back in.  It tried resetting PRAM. In my preferences, my computer sleep prefernces remain unchanged from the time that it was functioning correctly.  If anyone has a suggestion I would love to hear it.

  • Mac Pro Won't Sleep

    Hello all:
I've been having an ongoing situation with my Mac Pro. I hear the boot drive spin down at the time I've set in Energy Saver, only to hear it spin back up after about 30 seconds. Then it repeats at the same interval again and again. I've tried changing Energy Saver Sleep settings numerous times, including default. I've made sure nothing is running when I leave the machine. I've ejected and disconnected all hard drives & peripherals except the keyboard & mouse (they're standard Apple devices). I've checked the drive in Disk Utility with my bootup disc--it checks out fine.
It will sleep, but only about 50% of the time. The only way I can guarantee Sleep is to physically set the machine in the Apple dropdown.
I've had people tell me my boot drive may be failing, but I can't see any sign of it doing so--no clicking or other noises, no lengthy access times, etc. In any event, replacing the drive sounds like an expensive shotgun approach with no guarantee of success.
I'm stumped. Is there anyone who has had this problem and solved it?

I never ever set internal drives to spin down when not in use.
And don't "eject" internal drives. That is for external drives.
And now I have an SSD for the system. Silence no matter what.
    Spotlight. TimeMachine. Network. Activity Monitor.
You really might want to do a quick clean install of the OS somewhere else and don't install anything else.
And without knowing what is in your driver extensions and background processes and launched on startup but all of those.
And it won't do it on Safe Boot of course.
You are running.... Lion? Mountain Lion? on a Mac Pro 3,1? other?

  • Mac Pro won't sleep or shut down

I have an early 2008 Mac Pro (2x2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon) running latest software. It won't go to sleep. It looks like it does but it doesn't. I get a grey screen saying it had to restart because of a problem. I have to turn it off manually on the button and the secure emty trash doesn't seem to empty because the icon bin has "paper" in it. Also, I get asked if I want to remove all items. I say yes and it still looks full. I just reinstalled EVRYTHING a couple of weeks ago (from my old 10.5 discs). What to do now?

    Hi-
The problems that you describe indicate a user account problem, which are typically caused by preference settings, or, items in login or startup items files.

  • Mac Pro won't boot when a hard drive is in drive bay 1

I have a 2006 Mac Pro with a slight issue.
Whenever I put a drive in bay #1, the system will no longer boot.
I've removed all of my hard drives except my boot disk.
Placed it in drive bays 2,3 or 4, and it boots no problem.
When I place it in drive bay 1, the system won't go past the grey screen.
When I hold down the option key when booting with the drive in bay #1, the arrow pops up like I will have a choice of selecting the boot disk, but then no choices appear.
It's super strange. The computer is still working great, it is just a little annoying that one of my drive bays is no longer functional.
    Any ideas?

It seems the problem is not with the hard drive(s) since they work in another bay. So the thing to check is the power and SATA cabling from the bay to the motherboard. The SATA cables from the bay plug into the motherboard and perhaps has come loose, gotten dirty, or tarnished. Likewise the connector on the drive bay may be dirty or tarnished.
So my only suggestion is to check the cabling and connections.

  • Macbook Pro won't sleep when lid open

My 2011 Macbook Pro won't go to sleep if I leave the lid open. I have checked System Preferences>Energy Saver and the display/computer sleep is set to 10 min for both Battery and Power Adapter settings. Even if I close all the applications down, my computer will still not go to sleep. The battery just gets completely drained if I forget to close the lid. Help?

  • MacBook Pro won't sleep when closed

So yesterday I closed the computer at the office and came home with it like normal and this morning the battery was dead which was unusual.
I plugged in and started up, no big deal.
Then I finished just now and shut the computer and noticed that the apple and the screen stayed lit. I can't find the place in preferences to tell it to shut down when closing the screen...
    Any help would be appreciated

    hi,
I have the similar problem with my mac book pro 17" after updating to Mac OS X 10.5.7 and installing Safari 4 - when I close it, it goes down in the sleeping mode, but only once. When I open it and whant to close it for the second time, it doesn´t - it´s freezing. Also, if I do it manually thrue the menue, it ist the same. It is freezing and the coursor is gone and only thing I can do then is to turn it off and start again. After that the same play start again - standby works only once. Any help proposal? Tnx and greetings from Vienna

  • MacBook Pro won't sleep when shut

I body slammed my computer and cracked the screen. I bought a new, 3rd-party screen and had a friend install it. Now when I close the lid it won't fall asleep, and I must select sleep from the menu. Also, when it is asleep, the heartbeat is dimmer than usual. Tried resetting SMC, no luck.

    I'd guess:
    a) The magnetic sensor was left out or not aligned properly so it's not getting the 'lid closed' trigger
    b) The lamp was replaced out of alignment so isn't directly in position to glow correctly

  • MBP won't sleep when charging

My 15" i5 MacBook Pro won't sleep when charging; a reset of the SMC solves the problem temporarily, but it always recurs. Interestingly, the sleep indicator light pulses as if the machine is sleeping, but I can clearly hear hard drive activity; the drive sounds like it keeps spinning up every 10 seconds or so. This is not an issue when trying to sleep when running on the battery only. Any advice?

I would just buy a wall charger for the touch and leave your MBP alone. If you really only wanted to charge it from the MBP, just make sure it doesn't sleep when plugged into the power adapter.

  • Mac Pro won't be put to sleep

Can you tell us a little more about the recent installation? What is it exactly and are things compatible with 10.6?
    Here's my sleep faq.
This is for a Mac that won't sleep.
Here is Apple's  KB article HT1776 with their tips.
    Mine follow;
USB devices and hubs often cause Macs to not sleep or wake quickly from sleep (notably HP printers and scanners, HP all in ones, and Cannon scanners). Disconnect all USB except for keyboard and mouse and try. If it sleeps, add one back at a time testing after each one to find the culprit.
If you've set your Mac to receive faxes, it may not be able to sleep. It might also have a damaged preferences file. If you use your Mac for faxing, open System Preferences. click Print & Fax, click the Faxing tab, and uncheck the Receive Faxes On This Computer box.
If that doesn't work or you've never faxed on your Mac, go to Finder/Hard Drive /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration and delete the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist and com..apple.AutoWake.plist files (if your Mac asks, type your admin. password). If the latter file isn't present in the folder, go to user name(probably your name)/Library/Preferences, delete the com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file, and reboot your Mac.
Some have resolved sleep issues by downloading the  Combo update,  from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update  disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse,Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try
    USER TIPS……..
Check in System Preferences > Energy Saver is "Wake for network access" checked? If so, uncheck it.
One user reported, " I couldn't make my macbook pro to go to sleep because I had my wireless headphone receiver still plugged in. I unplugged it and then it went to sleep."
Also, if you have an External Western Digital (WD) hard drive and have installed  WDDMService and WDSmartWareD on your Mac, it may not sleep. Fix is to un-install those....you don't need them to use the drive.
"I have had this problem with my IMac G5. It is surprisingly irritating. LaCie's Silverkeeper backup software was the cause. By default it gave itself permission to wake up the computer to check if a backup was needed. Do you have this or a similar program installed which has scheduled activities including wake-up permissions as an option?"
One provided this link, xlr8yourmac.com, to a member, which addresses failure of deep sleep with some users that updated and added new FireWire and USB card.
Also, here is Apple KB article TA2469 about PCI cards and sleep.
After few days of messing around I found out that I had desktop background (wallpaper) set to change every 1 minute. After unchecking "Change picture..." in system preferences (under Desktop/Screen saver), my powerbook went to sleep all by itself.
"I  have a Canon printer(shared) and my imac would not sleep. I opened up printer/fax in system prefs and noticed it said the printer was in use when it was off. Opened up the printer queue and noticed about 7 pending documents. Deleted them all and now it sleeps. Check the printer queue!"
One user has had success, after trying all these tips, using an App. called PleaseSleep. I've never used it though.

Why won't my Mac Pro go to sleep?

    Hi X,
I've been having the same problem of mac pro not going to sleep. I think its to do with some universal audio drivers installed with a recent hardware interface I've added.

How can I recover the NAS back up to put on my new Time Machine.
Talking to Apple Support Adviser was a waste of time on case number 239647273
    Any thoughts or pointers?

Keep the old OS around and just kick the tires and test new OS. Apple has a history and habit of breaking support in things like this.
You can use TimeMachine as one level of backup, and even there there were changes with Lion, I would always recommend foremost backup clones of every volume. And clone (SuperDuper etc) can be stored on something like HP NAS Media Server which also was supporting TimeMachine, iTunes - until Apple made that harder and more their own proprietary format.

Rather than "upgrade" I would clone the system, and do a clean install, then allow Setup Assistant to import your files.
