Mac Pro Won't Sleep

Hello all:
I've been having an ongoing situation with my Mac Pro. I hear the boot drive spin down at the time I've set in Energy Saver, only to hear it spin back up after about 30 seconds. Then it repeats at the same interval again and again. I've tried changing Energy Saver Sleep settings numerous times, including default. I've made sure nothing is running when I leave the machine. I've ejected and disconnected all hard drives & peripherals except the keyboard & mouse (they're standard Apple devices). I've checked the drive in Disk Utility with my bootup disc--it checks out fine.
It will sleep, but only about 50% of the time. The only way I can guarantee Sleep is to physically set the machine in the Apple dropdown.
I've had people tell me my boot drive may be failing, but I can't see any sign of it doing so--no clicking or other noises, no lengthy access times, etc. In any event, replacing the drive sounds like an expensive shotgun approach with no guarantee of success.
I'm stumped. Is there anyone who has had this problem and solved it?

I never ever set internal drives to spin down when not in use.
And don't "eject" internal drives. That is for external drives.
And now I have an SSD for the system. Silence no matter what.
Spotlight. TimeMachine. Network. Activity Monitor.
You really might want to do a quick clean install of the OS somewhere else and don't install anything else.
And without knowing what is in your driver extensions and background processes and launched on startup but all of those.
And it won't do it on Safe Boot of course.
You are running.... Lion? Mountain Lion? on a Mac Pro 3,1? other?

  • My mac pro won't sleep on its own or when I try to put it to sleep.

    Hello all,
I have a 2007 Mac Pro and for some reason, it won't go to sleep.  Normally if it was idle for an hour or two, it would automatically sleep but not anymore.  If I put it to sleep manually, it wakes right back up.  I have to shut it down so the hard drives don't spin all night long.  I'm not sure what's causing this.  I tried unplugging all the USB devices and plugging them back in.  It tried resetting PRAM. In my preferences, my computer sleep prefernces remain unchanged from the time that it was functioning correctly.  If anyone has a suggestion I would love to hear it.

    Step 1
Take all the steps suggested in this support article.
    Step 2
    From the menu bar, select
     ▹ System Preferences ▹ Print & Scan ▹ Open Print Queue
Check all printers for unfinished jobs. Deal with any you find.
    Step 3
 ▹ System Preferences ▹ Sharing: uncheck all boxes.
    Step 4
Reboot and see whether there's any change.
    Step 5
    Reset the SMC.
    Step 6
Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal. Don’t launch any applications at first. If sleep still doesn’t work properly, back up all data and reinstall the OS. After that, if you still have the issue, make a “Genius” appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.
If sleep now works as expected, go on to the next step.
    Step 7
Still in safe mode, launch the usual set of applications that are running when you have the problem, including your login items, one at a time, testing after each one. Some applications may not work; skip them. You might be able to identify the cause of the problem this way.
    Step 8
If sleep is still working after you’ve launched all the usual applications, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and test again. If sleep still works, you’re done, at least for the moment.
If you still have the sleep issue after booting out of safe mode, post again.

  • Mac Pro won't sleep or shut down

I have an early 2008 Mac Pro (2x2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon) running latest software. It won't go to sleep. It looks like it does but it doesn't. I get a grey screen saying it had to restart because of a problem. I have to turn it off manually on the button and the secure emty trash doesn't seem to empty because the icon bin has "paper" in it. Also, I get asked if I want to remove all items. I say yes and it still looks full. I just reinstalled EVRYTHING a couple of weeks ago (from my old 10.5 discs). What to do now?

    Hi-
The problems that you describe indicate a user account problem, which are typically caused by preference settings, or, items in login or startup items files.

  • Mac Pro won't sleep when I want it to

    Hello all
I have a 2006 Mac Pro (1,1) running 10.7.5, 8GB RAM and an 8800GT video card.   It also has a Sonnet USB card and a Sonnet e-SATA card.  Lately, the computer has not been going to sleep when I set it to in the Energy Saver preferences panel.  If I set it to sleep after a certain amount time (say, 10 minutes), it doesn't.  AND if I set it to "Never Sleep" - it does.  This is a new one for me, as I have usually seen machines not go to sleep, but never a mac that does sleep when told to "never".  It is frustrating, because it seems that whenever I want the computer to stay awake (for a lengthy download or a Time Capsule backup), it won't.  And when I want it to sleep because I got called away from the computer, it doesn't.
I've run permission repair and I've looked at the console log.  Last night I set it to "never sleep" so I could do an initial backup (wirelessly, so it would take a few hours).  When I woke up, the machine was sleeping peacefully.  Here are the log entries for when it fell asleep and woke up:
    5/17/13 11:25:27  PM  kernel:  ASP_TCP asp_SetTCPQoS:  sock settclassopt got error 57
    5/17/13 11:25:27 PM   kernel:  ASP_VFS afpfs_DoRecoonect:  connect on /Volumes/Time Capsule failed 49
5/17/13 11:25:27 PM   kernel:  AFP_VFS afpfs_DoReconnect:  sleep for 1 seconds and try again
7:49:14  AM  kernel:  Wake reason:  EHCI
There are a lot of those "error 57" and "sleep for 1 seconds and try again" messages.  My uneducated guess is that somehow the Time Capsule went to sleep in the middle of the backup, but that wouldn't explain why the Mac went to sleep when it was set not to.
    Can anyone please help?  Thanks!
    Richard

Why won't my Mac Pro go to sleep?

    Hi X,
I've been having the same problem of mac pro not going to sleep. I think its to do with some universal audio drivers installed with a recent hardware interface I've added.
    the terminal app in response to above line reads;

    com.uaudio.driver.UAFWAudio(4.0.0

Can you tell us a little more about the recent installation? What is it exactly and are things compatible with 10.6?
    Here's my sleep faq.
This is for a Mac that won't sleep.
Here is Apple's  KB article HT1776 with their tips.
    Mine follow;
USB devices and hubs often cause Macs to not sleep or wake quickly from sleep (notably HP printers and scanners, HP all in ones, and Cannon scanners). Disconnect all USB except for keyboard and mouse and try. If it sleeps, add one back at a time testing after each one to find the culprit.
If you've set your Mac to receive faxes, it may not be able to sleep. It might also have a damaged preferences file. If you use your Mac for faxing, open System Preferences. click Print & Fax, click the Faxing tab, and uncheck the Receive Faxes On This Computer box.
If that doesn't work or you've never faxed on your Mac, go to Finder/Hard Drive /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration and delete the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist and com..apple.AutoWake.plist files (if your Mac asks, type your admin. password). If the latter file isn't present in the folder, go to user name(probably your name)/Library/Preferences, delete the com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file, and reboot your Mac.
Some have resolved sleep issues by downloading the  Combo update,  from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update  disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse,Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try
    USER TIPS……..
Check in System Preferences > Energy Saver is "Wake for network access" checked? If so, uncheck it.
One user reported, " I couldn't make my macbook pro to go to sleep because I had my wireless headphone receiver still plugged in. I unplugged it and then it went to sleep."
Also, if you have an External Western Digital (WD) hard drive and have installed  WDDMService and WDSmartWareD on your Mac, it may not sleep. Fix is to un-install those....you don't need them to use the drive.
"I have had this problem with my IMac G5. It is surprisingly irritating. LaCie's Silverkeeper backup software was the cause. By default it gave itself permission to wake up the computer to check if a backup was needed. Do you have this or a similar program installed which has scheduled activities including wake-up permissions as an option?"
One provided this link, xlr8yourmac.com, to a member, which addresses failure of deep sleep with some users that updated and added new FireWire and USB card.
Also, here is Apple KB article TA2469 about PCI cards and sleep.
After few days of messing around I found out that I had desktop background (wallpaper) set to change every 1 minute. After unchecking "Change picture..." in system preferences (under Desktop/Screen saver), my powerbook went to sleep all by itself.
"I  have a Canon printer(shared) and my imac would not sleep. I opened up printer/fax in system prefs and noticed it said the printer was in use when it was off. Opened up the printer queue and noticed about 7 pending documents. Deleted them all and now it sleeps. Check the printer queue!"
One user has had success, after trying all these tips, using an App. called PleaseSleep. I've never used it though.
    Good Luck!  DALE

  • Mac Pro won't wake from prolonged sleep in Mountain Lion

My Mac Pro won't wake from sleep after it is in sleep mode for several hours at a time.  It will wake if the sleep period is short.  But if it sleeps overnight it will not wake the next morning.  Nothing seems to work.  It requires a hard restart.  I am running OS X 10.8.2.  I read in another site that this problem was fixed for Macbook Air and Macbook Pro by turning off hibernate mode in Terminal.  But I doubt this would help with my Mac Pro.
    Any thoughts or ideas?
    Thanks.

  • Pro won't sleep automatically

Bought a new pro and used migration assistant to move stuff from my iMac.
Now the Pro won't sleep automatically. It sleeps when I tell it to or on Schedule at 0100 but not after x mins of inactivity.
The iMac it migrated from had no such issues.
Is there any reset I can do to cure the problem?

I have about a 2 year Mac pro (intel) and it will not sleep on its own. I can manually sleep it.
The hard drive cycles up and down about every 2 minutes or so continually and the display remains blank. It will keep cycling the drive until I manually sleep it.
I tried a few times doing the reset thing and once it helped but in a week or so it started to do it again. I went and made up a new user and it seemed to fix it for a month and then it want back to doing it again. It is very annoying. I even updated it to Leopard and it sill did it. I'll try the reset again and see.

  • After 10.7.4 update macbook pro won't sleep

after 10.7.4 update, macbook pro won't sleep.

Test after each of the following steps that you haven’t already tried:
    Step 1
 ▹ System Preferences ▹ Energy Saver ▹ Power Adapter ▹ Wake for network access: uncheck. You may need to unlock the preference pane by clicking the lock icon in the lower left corner and entering your administrator password.
    Step 2
 ▹ System Preferences ▹ Energy Saver ▹ Schedule… ▹ Start up or wake: uncheck
    Step 3
     ▹ System Preferences ▹ Print & Scan ▹ Open Print Queue...
Check all printers for unfinished jobs. Deal with any you find.
    Step 4
Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard, mouse or trackball, and monitor, if applicable.
    Step 5
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the page that opens.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected. Enter “powerd” (without the quotes) in the "Filter" text field. Select the powerd process and click the Quit Process button in the toobar (stop-sign icon.) In the sheet that opens, click Force Quit. You’ll be prompted for your administrator password. The process will be relaunched immediately.
    Step 6
Boot in safe mode and log in. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal. Don’t launch any applications at first. If sleep still doesn’t work properly, back up all data and reinstall the Mac OS.

  • Mac Pro won't start and display has no signal?

My Mac Pro goes to sleep and won't start. The display doesn't have a signal. What is wrong?

After a few hours of trying to work things out...I've discovered its related to the ATI Radeon 2600 HD XT Card (dual cards and monitors). Once I remove one card from each machine the systems started but the monitors remained in what looks like suspended mode display "No signal".
Tried to download firmware update. My system wouldn't allow the installer to work. Apparently already have the firmware.
The Display icon shows only four choices for the monitors resolution. On my working systems there are at least 15 resolution settings. Where is the ATI Radeon software on the system. The About this Mac doesn't show any Graphics or Display information.

  • Went on my vacation, brought my macbookpro, got home, mac pro won't acknowledge photos.  Why?

Wife uses the macbookpro mostly with her iphone.  However, they are my photos on my phone, and all computers are mine, so why in any case because I have synced with another computer with also uses another iphone, that my personal mac pro won't acknowledge the photos that originated from my phone.  Photos shouldn't be subject to copyright like music purchases.  If I decide to share my photos with another mac (which also happens to be my macbookpro that my wife uses), there shouldn't be anything applied to the photos I've taken with my personal iphone once it is plugged into my other mac.  They're my photos regardless and originated from my iphone, so my mac pro should never block these photos from me in iphoto.
    Summary:
I go on vacation with my macbookpro.
I take photos with my iphone.  I put them in my macbookpro while on vacation.
I get home.  I try to put the photos on my macpro.  Not only am I not allowed, I can't even see the photos in iphone via my plugged in iphone.  They are hidden when plugged into my macpro.
Why don't I have access to MY OWN PHOTOS when I have spent well over 50,000 dollars in Apple products?
To fix this I had to export the photos from the macbookpro to a USB and manually add them to my mac pro.  Alternatively I could plug in my iphone to my windows computer and access all the files via a folder search.

Another way to look at this which imo also applies.
I go on vacation with friend.  I take photos with my iphone.  I sync some of the photos to his iphoto on his macbook.  I get home.
I can no longer see those photos, which I took, using my own iphoto sync on my mac.  They don't show up anywhere with preview or image capture (remembered name).  Just because I gave my friend some of my photos, doesn't mean a lock should be applied that doesn't allow me to sync those photos via iphoto on my own mac.  Doesn't this make sense?  Why is this happening?

  • 2010 Mac Mini won't sleep

Hello, everything was working fine until I accessed my mac mini from my old iMac G4 to share some files. Now my new Mac Mini won't sleep. Here is what I have done. Ejected the Mac Mini on the iMac. Turned off the iMac, stopped sharing everything on the Mac Mini including files, my printer and iTunes media and reset the PRAM. Still the Mac Mini won't sleep. It's set to it's defaults of 10 minutes to sleep the monitor and itself but only the monitor goes to sleep after the 10 minutes. Very frustrated...

Hello Euchre and thank you for replying. I have unchecked all the boxes within the "Sharing" options that I checked some time ago. When I did that, sharing was automatically turned off. Still I am having the issue. I'll try putting the monitor at 9 minutes and the computer at 10 to see if that works. I'll be back. Thanks again, Ed
