Mac Pro won't start past grey boot screen.

Hi there,
I purchased a new MacPro about 6 days or so ago, and I switched it off last night and tried to turn it on this morning and all that happens is I get the Apple chime then it goes onto the grey Apple screen with the spinning wheel and doesn't go further than that.
I have tried a soft restart (Holding down shift on startup) and I want to put in the install disks to check the drives and repair them in Disk Utility but cannot open CD drawer.
The MacPro has not had any upgrades, it is as stock from Apple stores.
Thanks...

Hiya, and first of all, congrats on buying a great machine! When I got mine, I had nothing but problems, and did a proper erase and install (see below). I think, now, this is ASSUMPTION and not proven(!), that a "conveyor belt" type software install can never be as good as an individual, dedicated and personal install.
And conveyor belt manufacture can go wrong (maybe you got machine 100,031, and every 100,031st machine is faulty - mathematicians I know it does not always work like that!). As you just got it, it might be worth while to get on to Apple in the FIRST INSTANCE, as their apple care will get you through any problems, and can guide you through diagnostics.
Finally, you could turn it off and start in "verbose mode" ("cmd"+"v" keys during start up). This shows what's happening "behind" the grey screen (so instead of the grey screen you'll get the UNIX lines whizzing through, and the writing might give a hint as to what's wrong).
I am sure that either you or Apple WILL sort your machine, and (be patient) you'll love your Mac.

  • MacBook Pro won't get past grey startup screen

I have a late 2011 15 inch MacBook Pro running Mavericks. Around a month ago, maybe more, it began to sometimes completely freeze or just turn off while Inwas using it. Sometimes it would start up again, sometimes it wouldn't and would beep three times. Eventually it wouldn't start up at all and would just beep. I started it up in recovery (holding command +R) and ran a disk repair, it said the disk couldn't be repaired. I had it backed up on Time Machine so I replaced the HD and restored from Time Machine. It was fine for a couple days after that, then the old symptoms returned. I took the RAM out and replaced them with some RAM of the same size (2 chips, 2GB each) taken out of a Windows laptop that I had. Again, it was fine for a few days then started turning off and beeping. Then it would turn on but not boot up, i.e. get stuck on the grey screen with the spinning circle. I tried booting in recovery, booting into safe mode, holding option and choosing a disk; in all cases it would just stay stuck on grey screen with the spinning thing. I tried PRAM and SMC reset, no result. At one point, it got through boot up in safe mode but took like an hour to do so. I restarted from safe mode and it took another hour and booted up normally. Then it turned off again and wouldn't turn back on. I opened it up, reseated the RAM and cleaned he fans, which were filled with dust and build up. It turned on and ran normally for a couple days in which I wasn't doing much on it, just watching stuff on VLC or reading, so not really using it and clicking and stuff. Next day, I open it (from sleep, it hasn't been shut down at all since I got it to run again), and try to open Firefox and actually work; it keeps freezing and being incredibly slow, to the point where it was totally frozen and I couldn't force quit or anything. So I held the power key to shut it down; since then it's back to not getting past the grey screen, even when I leave it for over an hour. No idea what to do, anyone have an idea? Thanks in advance.

You have to use Mac specific RAM chips.
You have to buy new RAM modules, I guess.
If you have extended AppleCare, contact Apple.
    Best.

  • Late 2008 MacBook won't start past grey Apple screen

I am currently running a late 2008 13 aluminium MacBook. After I updated to 10.6.7 I started having start up issues. I'd either need to wait a really long time, or I'd need to restart it while sitting on the grey screen with the spinning gear. This morning, nothing will help get it past this screen. Has anyone else experienced this, and if so, what did you do to resolve this? Thanks.

  • Mac book pro won't go past grey start up screen

Went to turn on my Mac book pro 2011 or 2012 and it went to the grey loading screen with an apple, spinning gear and a loading bar. Once the loading bar completes my Mac book just turns off.  It just keeps doing this, I tried to do a safe boot, but once it was done that it turned off and continues to do this circle of grey screen loading than turning off. Please help!

  • Boot Camp: Mac Pro won't start after Windows install

After installing Boot Camp on a Mac Pro dual 2.66 (firmware updated), XP installer went through installation & copying files, then restarted. Went to a black screen with white Windows-style text that said something along the lines of "XP cannot start from this CD, press any key to restart." Totally unresponsive, held down power to restart. Will no longer power up. Have reset the SMC without any effect. Makes a brief sound when trying to start, but does not actually start up.
Is there any known power issue that I might be able to solve myself, or is the supply likely blown?
Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I put Vista on its own dedicated drive, 64GB Vista, the rest as FAT32 to make it easier to share files. I had to remove the OS X drives in order to allow Windows/Vista to install. Once installed, had a black screen and some blue crash screen, until I ran the BootCamp driver updates.
I would try unplugging your drive(s) first and see if you boot from Tiger Installer DVD - or better, boot Apple Hardware Test (hold down "d" on startup from Install Disk #1).

  • Brand new out of the box Mac book pro won't go past register country screen. esc starts voice over, cannot click or enter to go to next set up screen. Help!

I have a new Mac book pro, powered up, won't go past welcome, choose country screen. VoiceOver works, I can use arrow keys to toggle up and down country list, but the continue button arrow will not work. Pressing enter makes an error tone. Tried everything to select country and proceed through setup, no luck. Supposed to be first Mac, present for my wife. So far not impressed!

I just purchased my first Mac last night and also had the same problem.  You have to press down on the track pad to hear it click.  After you get it all setup you can set the track pad up for "touch" clicking.  Hope this helps.

  • Mac Pro Won't Start After Installing Security Update Tonight

I just installed the latest security update for Lion on my Mac Pro via software update. The update seemed to install fine. I was about to start work when all of a sudden the system rebooted on its own. Now it just continues to reboot because it can't complete the boot up.
I tried resetting PRAM and SMC, but this didn't help.
I tried booting up from CD using an old SNL disk. I was able to get to disk tools once. I checked my startup volume and disk tools said the volumes is fine. I was checking permissions when once again the system rebooted on its own.
I tried starting up in safe mode, but it only gets so far into the boot process before it reboots.
I tried starting in verbose mode, and noticed several SMC related errors (this is why I tried to reset the SMC). No joy.
If I leave the system sit a few minutes, it gets further into the boot process, but still won't boot completely.
    Any suggestions?

Mac Pro tower or MacBook Pro notebook? Which model?

  • Mac Pro won't start; please help!!

Had Mac Pro for 6 months. All was going well until today. Then I noticed my Mail application was not sounding a chime when mail came in. I repaired permissions and re-started my computer.
Only it did not re-start. I got no start-up chime and after the grey screen appeard, after about 15 seconds a dark blanket transition goes down the screen and a message comes up in several laungauges, English being:
"You must re-start your computer. Either hold down the power button for 8 seconds or press the restart button".
I held the power button in for 8 seconds, then turned it back on again, same thing...
I reset the SMC/Pram thing (whatever it is called) by doing it both ways i.e. unplugging every cable, then plugging in just power/keyboard/mouse, the other way was pressing the switch inside the machine; nothing.
    My machine won't start up.
    Any ideas?

What you're seeing is called a kernel panic. You can read more about what causes these and steps to take on the following web pages:

  • Mac Pro won't start in safe mode

In order to solve another problem in Garage Band, I tried to start my Mac Pro up in "Safe Mode," But the status bar wouldn't get past about 40%, and the computer froze up.  Tried it twice, same result each time.  I don't really see a problem here, unless it indicates something bad.  Anyone have an opinion?

Boot from your installation disc. Select Utilities > Disk Utility from the menu bar. Select the boot volume and run "Repair Disk" (not "Repair Permissions.") I'm assuming you have backups; if not; back up first.

  • Mac Pro won't start

I recently set up 4 accounts (+ Administrator) on our new Mac Pro. All accounts have admin rights. While working in FCP I found I didn't have read & write access on anything. I started changing the permissions 1 folder at a time as needed. Then realised I could change permissions on the drive and add to all subfolders. I did it on the Media drive (Raid) then on the System drive. On the Media drive icon a lock appeared and all my media in FCP went offline. I logged out and was going to log back in as Administrator to see if I could reset everything from there. I had to step out so I shut down the system and when I returned it wouldn't boot back up. It hangs on the screen with the apple and spinning thing under it. It's spinning but nothing is happening past that. I tried resetting PRam and safe booting. Not working. Any ideas? TIA

*When you changed the permissions on the system drive and applied to subfolder you changed the system drive to the point where it will no longer boot. You are probably going to have to install the system again.
    Do you have a backup?
