Mac Pro won't stream from Netflix

Mac Pro 2 x 3 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon, 9 Gb RAM, OS X 10.6.7. Used to be able to stream Netflix Instant Watch movies up to about a year ago, when I got an iPad and switched to watching Netflix stuff on that. But yesterday I tried it on the Mac Pro again and a message informed me "Our apologies -- instant watching is not supported on your operating system." I use Safari 5.0.5 and meet all the other Netflix requirements for streaming on a Mac.
On a separate internal hard drive of my Mac Pro, I have OS x 10.5.8 and Safari 5.0.5, and am still able to stream Netflix movies fine if I boot up in that. But I can't steam them when booted into 10.6.7 for some reason. Any ideas?

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under Mac OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

    My Mac Pro won't wake from sleep after it is in sleep mode for several hours at a time.  It will wake if the sleep period is short.  But if it sleeps overnight it will not wake the next morning.  Nothing seems to work.  It requires a hard restart.  I am running OS X 10.8.2.  I read in another site that this problem was fixed for Macbook Air and Macbook Pro by turning off hibernate mode in Terminal.  But I doubt this would help with my Mac Pro.
    Any thoughts or ideas?

  • Early 2008 mac pro won't boot from hdd when ssd is installed

    I have Mountain Lion 10.8.3 installed on my 1TB HDD in my early 2008 mac pro.  That is the only OS install on my mac.  I have an OWC SSD formatted but left as an empty drive that I am trying to use but when it's installed my mac hangs on the blank gray screen.
    My mac cold boots fine and runs fine when the SSD is *not* installed.  When I shut down and put the SSD into a drive bay the mac does seem to boot ok the first time, but when the computer is off for a while it will not boot.  It just hangs on the blank gray screen (no apple logo).    As soon as I pull out the SSD, the computer boots fine and runs fine again.  I am not trying to boot off the SSD, I am booting off the HDD.  The correct drive (1tb hdd) is selected in startup disk.
    OWC has been helping me and I have tested 3 SSD's.  So it does not appear to be a problem with their drive.
    The mac will boot into safe mode with the SSD installed.  It will boot if I choose the boot drive with the option key at startup.
    Mountain Lion was clean installed.
    Could it be some sort of library pref or cache issue?
    Any recommendations on what to try?

    A HT does not find a lot of errors.
    It doesn't look for bad sectors or directory or file problems.
    Clone your SSD now that you have a clean OS and has the Apple updates on it. Before you make changes.
    Install TRIM Enabler 2.2+ on it and any boot volume, to enable TRIM and so that Disk Utility's Repair Disk will trim cells. Mountain Lion Recovery won't  which is a shame, so...
    Clone and keep bootable backup clone of your system to use for maintenance.
    A really bad directory on a system drive will cause interference from booting.
    SSDs really need extra care, and even with TRIM, to be repaired from time to time and couple times a year, to do an erase and restore from a current image.
    Of course Mac OS system even iwth apps is small and doesn't need to have any data or media and fits on 120GB usually just fine and still have a good enough amount free so TRIM and Garbage Collection can work properly and not get low on free pages. But 20GB free should be the minimum free, and better to have more, at least whatever total amount is written out in a month.

    4 HDDs installed, 2 of them are a striped RAID 0 that is the bootup volume, a couble of external hard drives (1 of them a bootable clone), a DVI display
    backed up with Time Machine; thanks for the concern.
    Problem:
    I came home one day, and my computer was acting funny. It was fine earlier in the day. Time Machine had failed a backup, an AFP mount had unmounted with an error, Dropbox was trying to sync but couldn't because of bad access permissions for a file, and Terminal wouldn't open, giving me a message about an invalid shell. I restarted, and it failed to restart, so I turned it off. I thought it was a corrupt filesystem (and striping is unstable, so it would make sense), but no, no other bootable disks worked.
    Boot chime plays, grey screen comes up with Apple logo, wheel spins forever.
    ATI graphics card fan runs pretty fast after a minute or so.
    Light is solid, not blinking to indicate a RAM problem.
    What I've tried:
    Googled the problem. Got results about MacBook Pros. Did "-MacBook" in the search. Got similar questions but no solutions for my Mac.
    Tried booting from an install DVD and the clone. Same thing happened.
    Reset the PRAM (twice). No effect.
    Reset the SMC (twice). No effect.
    Unplugged the monitor. Graphics card fan wasn't loud, but the computer still wouldn't boot.
    Unplugged all USB and FireWire devices. No effect.
    Left the computer unplugged for an hour, which also resets the SMC. Who knows, this sometimes works! It didn't.
    Any ideas?

    Booting in Safe Mode did not help, but it did show a grey circle with a cross through it instead of an Apple logo like before.
    I remembered that there's an Apple Hardware Test (a bit hard to figure out how to do on your specific machine ), and I booted into it. Before I even ran the test, it told me that there is an error. The error message was just the name of one of my RAM slots. So... a piece of RAM might be dead. I ran the extended test, and it was halfway through after 30 minutes, but I stopped it because I don't have enough time. I have to continue this tomorrow.
    As for the GPU, its fans might just be running because the system runs them at a high level by default when it's in certain states. I know older Macs did this in Target Disk Mode with every fan, and the GPU fan was running during the AHT too. At least I hope this is the case. Right now, it seems beyond a hard drive problem. Maybe booting from a DVD works because it only uses 1 RAM slot or something. I'd much rather have a piece of inexpensive RAM be dead than my GPU, and besides, I've kinda wanted to upgrade the RAM anyway.

    MacPro is unresponsive awaking from sleep, regardless of what is running. I've put my system & apps on a 120G Mercury Extreme Pro 2.5", with my data residing on SATA. So far, I've reset PRAM, had logic board replaced thru Apple Care, archived & reinstalled, and am currently trying to resolve with a level 2 tech, although scheduling calls is becoming prohibitive & frustrating. Have been at it for 5 weeks. Installed system onto SSD using CarbonCopy Cloner from SATA. Mac is a mid 2010 Refurb 2.66. Any insight would be helpful.

    I'm using a OWC 120GB SSD on my mac pro with no problems.
    I recall that sometime back sometime after I got my SSD there was a report (like this one) that Sandforce-based SSD's (like OWC's) had some sleep-related problem associated with hibernate mode.  There was supposed to be a firmware update but I don't know if it ever was released.  If it was it was certainly after I got my SSD.
    At any rate, type, 
    pmset -g
    in the terminal and see if it says hibernatemode is 0.  If it's non-zero change it to 0,
    sudo pmset hibernatemode 0

  • BRAND NEW Mac Pro won't boot from Leopard DVD, kernel panics!

    I just received my brand new Mac Pro today. It's a BTO machine with the upgrade to the NVIDIA 8800GT, a second optical drive and a Mac OS X Server license. The system has Mac OS X server installed on the default 320GB drive. I decided to use the server license as a virtual machine running in Leopard client. So, I installed 2 new 500GB Seagate 7200.11 (Retail) drives in the machine, zeroed them out in prep for installing Leopard client.
    At this point, I pop in a freshly-purchased retail copy of the Leopard DVD and restart. When I try to boot from the DVD and install Leopard to one of the new Seagate drives, I get kernel panics - need to restart the machine. Also tried booting from the Mac OS X Server DVD and this too only caused kernel panics. The DVD's read perfectly from within Mac OS X Server and boot from hard disks is flawless.
    I spent an hour on the phone with a level 2 tech at Apple - Tried swapping out the RAM and moving around the DIMMS to no avail. I am at a loss to what this could be. Seems to be a hardware issue and the tech thought it was likely a problem with one of the memory risers but couldn't send replacements. Anyone else with a similar issue?
    This is my first Mac and it looks like this Mac Pro is going back for an exchange and I'll have to wait yet another 10-12 days for a replacement to arrive. Bummer.
    Am I missing something simple here? Does this seem to be a hardware issue?

    New Mac Pros will not install the Leopard retail disc. They will only install the Leopard disc which shipped with them labeled Mac Pro. That has always been true. Macs can only boot the system that ships on DVD in the box that came with them, and newer retail releases. They can never boot from an older retail release than what shipped in the box.

    Hello,
    This Mac Pro will get to the boot options screen, where I'm able to see all attached disks. But once one is selected, it goes to the typical Apple logo with spinning icon, then flashes blue for a second before going to a grey screen with SBBOD.
    I've tried booting up with each RAM card removed and get the same issue wither way. Nether RAM card indicates bad RAM. The diagnostic lights on the board above the RAM do not indicate a problem.
    I've also tried booting without the video card by using a test system that has Remote Desktop enabled, but no luck.
    Reset PRAM and SMC.
    At this point the only thing I can think of is the logic board, but that seems a bit extreme. Does anyone have any ideas what else I might try?

    Are you using the original grey install disks?
    One disk will have Apple hardware test instructions printed on it. Try following that to see if it can boot to run a test. (Hold D at boot IIRC).

    You could also try target disk mode to see if the hardware can boot & allow the internal disk(s) to be read on another system (assuming you have the correct leads - Firewire or Thunderbolt are supported).

    Target disk mode is a firmware feature so it may help isolate the OS's or disks as the issue.
    Don't forget about single user mode & verbose mode - they may give you more items to look at, but can be very confusing to look at

    One of two things:
    1.  Go to the Terminal App and type the word "sudo" and hit the Enter/Return key.  If it comes back with a permissions error then seek from Apple to correct it.
    2.  If there is no permissions error in the Terminal app then go to the installation log at "/var/log/install.log" or "/private/var/log/install.log".  Open it up and see if you find an error about failing to write to the file:
    ./postinstall: Error in converting the plist /Library/Preferences/com.adobe.PDFAdminSettings.plist to xml1 format
    If you get the error above then delete the file at the location and try updating again

  • Went on my vacation, brought my macbookpro, got home, mac pro won't acknowledge photos.  Why?

    Wife uses the macbookpro mostly with her iphone.  However, they are my photos on my phone, and all computers are mine, so why in any case because I have synced with another computer with also uses another iphone, that my personal mac pro won't acknowledge the photos that originated from my phone.  Photos shouldn't be subject to copyright like music purchases.  If I decide to share my photos with another mac (which also happens to be my macbookpro that my wife uses), there shouldn't be anything applied to the photos I've taken with my personal iphone once it is plugged into my other mac.  They're my photos regardless and originated from my iphone, so my mac pro should never block these photos from me in iphoto.
    Summary:
    I go on vacation with my macbookpro.
    I take photos with my iphone.  I put them in my macbookpro while on vacation.
    I get home.  I try to put the photos on my macpro.  Not only am I not allowed, I can't even see the photos in iphone via my plugged in iphone.  They are hidden when plugged into my macpro.
    Why don't I have access to MY OWN PHOTOS when I have spent well over 50,000 dollars in Apple products? 
    To fix this I had to export the photos from the macbookpro to a USB and manually add them to my mac pro.  Alternatively I could plug in my iphone to my windows computer and access all the files via a folder search.

    Another way to look at this which imo also applies.
    I go on vacation with friend.  I take photos with my iphone.  I sync some of the photos to his iphoto on his macbook.  I get home.
    I can no longer see those photos, which I took, using my own iphoto sync on my mac.  They don't show up anywhere with preview or image capture (remembered name).  Just because I gave my friend some of my photos, doesn't mean a lock should be applied that doesn't allow me to sync those photos via iphoto on my own mac.  Doesn't this make sense?  Why is this happening?

    My 2007 mac pro won't read windows 7 install disc. My macbook reads the disc fine, so it is not a problem with the disc. It is 32-bit. The apple help line suggested firewire connecting the macbook to the macpro and starting the macbook in target disc mode, but other posts I have read have said that this will not solve the issue. Any suggestions?

    Could be. I just rebooted and it read the disc. Unfortunately the windows install got interrupted and I had to reboot, and now it wont read the disc again. Is there any other way to install windows 7 to bootcamp, other than from the disc? Can I use FireWire and target disc my MacBook (the MacBook reads the disc just fine)?

  • Mac Pro won't recognize ethernet connection

    My Mac Pro won't recognize the Ethernet cable when it's plugged in. I know the cable and connection are good because my MacBook Pro recognizes it with no problem. I've had it for around a year, but have always used the airport to connect to the internet. It has two Ethernet ports on the back and I've tried both. Is there anything I need to do to configure the NIC card?

    No, but you do need to configure the Ethernet port in Network preferences. Open Network preferences and select the Ethernet port. Click on the Advanced button then on the TCP/IP tab. Set the Configure IPv4 drop down menu to DHCP. Set the Configure IPv6 drop down menu to Off. Click on the Apply button. If all is well you should see a valid IP address in the network settings for the port. If you see an IP address starting with 169., then it means your Ethernet port is not getting an IP address from your router. You should have an Ethernet cable connected from the Ethernet port on the computer to one of the LAN ports on your router.

  • Mac Pro doesn't boot from any media

    Hi,
    We have a Dual Xeon Mac Pro that has been running fine since 2007 the person that uses it reported that it started making loud banging noises (how loud I do not know as thats quite subjective although it was loud enough to warrant other people in the office going to see what the noise was) and then the desktop crashed and now when it boots we get the folder with a flashing question mark.
    I've put it down to disk failure but due to them having a Mac Pro (intel) and a Dual G5 PowerMac I think at some point in time they binned off one set of disks believing that one set would work for both machines resulting in none of the disks they have will boot the machine.
    Oddly I haven't been able to boot it from any other media though, I downloaded the live version of Ubuntu for Netbooks to try to get it to boot from that but it wouldn't boot from that either and when I put it in selective startup mode it detects the CD in the drive as Windows.
    So here I am with a Mac Pro an old G4 Mirror Doors era Apple Keyboard, no media that will boot the thing for diagnostics and wondering what my next move is. Back in the day when I admin'd a network of Mac's it'd be selective boot from a firewire drive try a repair do some cloning if required slap a new disk in reimage and off we go.
    I haven't actively worked on a day to day basis on Apple kit for about 4 years though so I'm a bit rusty and have no experience with the Intel Architecture Macs other than my Mum and Dads iMac and MacBook and I'm pretty sure the media that came with them wont boot the Mac Pro, different media sets never used to work across ranges, not sure how true that is now though.
    Any help with this much appreciated. Stats below

    I had a quote from the local Apple Service Centre and Media for this machine was £70.
    Luckily we found the Media for the Mac Pro inside a box for some other software.
    I have since been able to retrieve the data by inserting the disk into a SATA equipped G5 and using disk utility on that machine to repair the volume and disk.
    I've retrieved the data and the disk, volume and permissions structures all check out.
    However the Intel Mac Pro will not boot from the now repaired drive, or from the original DVD shipped with the computer.
    So off to the Apple Service Centre it goes for hardware diagnosis. I expect this to be expensive

    Since upgrade to OSX 8.2 new Retina Macbook Pro won't wake from sleep. Tablet lights are on in morning and fans running like crazy, but it requires hard quit and start. Tried with no apps running, no change. It was fine before this last update. Wasn't the recent firmware update supposed to fix this issue? It seems to have started one for me.

    I have the exact same problem with my Macbook Pro OS 10.8.4. What happens is: I work on the train, press cmd/alt + eject to put to sleep..pop it in my bag...get home or office... open the lid...and nothing! Battery indicator shows I have plenty of juice but it will not wake up no matter what key I press.
    The only difference between use on the train and home/office is the plugging in of peripherals and mains power. It happens sparadicially, perhaps once or twice a week and I always send a 'panic report', so somewhere there will be approx 20 reports of this fault at Apple.
