Mac Pro + X1900 XT crashing after boot (Leopard) - please read...

I have a Mac Pro quad 3GHz w/ ATI X1900 XT videocard. It's one of the first models released.
For the past 4-5 months I've noticed a few pixels on in random places - looks like stuck pixels on an LCD, but they're not as they move around from time to time and sometimes aren't there at all. It progressed to horizontal lines across the screen in places - following window boundaries, etc.
A few weeks ago I de-dusted the X1900 (there was much), applied latest Mac Pro firmware update and applied that recent X1900 XT firmware update. All in the same hour. The dots went nearly totally away, but the lines did not.
In the past 4-5 days, my Mac Pro basically freezes up within five minutes of boot. Can be running different apps. UT2K4 or just activating Expose or doing nothing. Right now it's still up amazingly after 30 mins.
I've got some screenshots and I found some crash log entries that correspond. Please have a look:
http://www.blakespot.com/macproleopardcrash/
I also took a 10 min HD video of the crashing I will put on a DVD and take to the Genius Bar to show the problem, if I need to send in hardware to Apple for repair.
I would love to think it's the X1900 and it overheated or something and became damaged so that would be all I need to send in. Note that NONE of these problems were at all present in the first 6 months of life or so. And yes, the crashing is post-Leopard install.
Very troubling. Is anyone else having issues like this? Any input appreciated.
Thanks much.

I have had nothing but trouble with ATI cards on all of my macs, I really wish Apple would drop the ATI card altogether and replace it with an nvidia 8800gtx,
its the only thing still stopping me from buying a mac pro,
the nvidia cards are either 256mb £99 or £1,000 quadro (old technology and overpriced), they need a card in the middle ground that's not an ATI

  • Mac Pro Early 2008 crash after gear on boot

Hi. I have a Mac Pro (Early 2008), with Mavericks installed. A couple of days ago, it crashed hard (in Portal, as it happens) and then wouldn't boot. When it was crashing it showed full green in various (dark? or random?) areas of the screen, and then random vertical lines of coloured noise. The cursor went jerky, and then stopped moving at all. Having decided this was a more serious problem than a simple steam error, I forced the machine to shut down with the case button, and then turned it back on again, but it wouldn't come up, and hasn't (with exceptions, see below) since.
    The behaviour is:
Boot chime, Apple, Apple-with-spinning-gear, a sensible (it seems) amount of spinning gear, then the gear stops and I get some flashing on my screen (like, a complete red screen, or orange screen – colours vary – displayed for less than one refresh, so I see a brief flash of colour with tearing). Occasionally instead of flashing I get an unexpected reboot: once when this happened I also got the kernel's (multiple language) "Your computer restarted because of a problem" screen.
Safe Mode has the same problem (I get a progress bar, when the progress bar completes everything stops and "screen flashing" happens).
EFI boot volume selector works fine, but when I continue to boot, either from my main partition or the Recovery partition, I get the same problem.
Verbose mode works until the point where the graphical user interface should come back, which gives me a white screen and nothing (except screen flashing). I do get a certain amount of "kSMCBadArgumentError" before that point, but see below.
Single User Mode works as it should, fsck finds no errors, all my data appears to be on my hard drive as expected, but on typing "exit" to continue boot I end up in the same position as Verbose Mode. Trying kextload to load all my extensions gives the kSMCBadArgumentError lines, but no other problems (until I try to boot). I have already tried using SUM to remove all the launch agents/daemons/extensions from /Library/ (leaving only the ones in /System/Library/). This worked (I modified the disk as I intended) but didn't help me boot.
I did get the recovery partition to boot once (seemingly randomly), Disk Utility found no errors. The full Apple Hardware Test doesn't seem to be an option from the recovery partition? (I've moved house a few times in the last 6 years, and I don't know where my physical AHT disk is any more. I do have a friend who would probably be able to burn one if Apple provides the disk image as a download.) I have had a full successful boot once too (maybe on the restart after using the recovery partition?) which let me use my administrator user perfectly (I used it for about 5 minutes?), but then after logging out and while trying to log in as my "standard" user I got full green noise as before, and the machine locked up again.
I've rotated my RAM (I have 2x1GB sticks and 2x2GB, as well as my usual 6GB config I've tried each of the pairs in "two-stick" configuration). No difference, except on one boot I got error lights (full on) on one riser, I assume that was because I hadn't seated it properly during rotation, because I took it out and put it back in again and I've not had the lights before or since.
I've also tried swapping in an older system drive, but that made no difference. (The old drive may have been a little flaky itself, but single-user mode booting reliably suggests, at least to me, that my normal drives aren't the problem?)
Without wishing to privilege a hypothesis, could it be the graphics card? I have the Nvidia GeForce 8800 GT, I believe (it looks exactly like the pictures of that card online, anyway) – installed by Apple at build time. I tried taking it out and putting it back in again, in case it had become poorly seated, but it seemed firmly in place – for example, the PCIe retainer clip was fully engaged before I removed the card – and reseating it didn't make any difference. I don't have a second card to test with, unfortunately. I wouldn't mind getting a new card to keep the machine running, of course, but I'd like to make sure that it's going to solve my problem before buying it!
Thanks for any help you can give!
Edited to correct OS field, which didn't work. I really do mean Mavericks.

RE: Mac Pro Replacement Graphics cards
    1) Apple brand cards,
    2) "sold in the Apple store" cards, and
    3) "Mac Edition" cards ...
... show all the screens, including Boot up screens, Safe Mode, Installer, Recovery, debug screens, and Alt/Option boot screens. At this writing, these choices include:
    1) Apple brand cards:
    • Apple-firmware 5770, about US$250** works near full speed in every model Mac Pro, Drivers in 10.6.5
    • Apple-firmware 5870, about US$450
    2) "sold in the Apple store" cards
    • NVIDIA Quadro 4000, about US$1200
    • NVIDIA Quadro 5000, about US$2500
    3) "Mac Edition" cards -- REQUIRE 10.8.3 or later:
    • SAPPHIRE HD 7950 3GB GDDR5 MAC Edition, about US$480** Vendor recommends Mac Pro 4,1
    • EVGA GTX 680 Mac Edition, about US$600
The cards above require no more than the provided two 6-pin aux power connectors provided in the Mac Pro through 2012 model. Aux cables may not be provided for third-party cards, but are readily available.
If you are Meet ALL of these:
    • running 10.8.3 or later AND
    • don't care about "no boot screens" etc AND
    • can re-wire or otherwise "work out" the power cabling, THEN:
You can use many more cards, even most "PC-only cards"

  • Mac Pro Early 2008 Crash on Boot Up

I have a Mac Pro early 2008 running OSX 10.8.5, and yesterday morning for seemingly no reason I had a screen corruption and freeze up, a kernel panic and then it rebooted itself. I have tried all of the memory( no flashing LED over power switch), cleared and reset all of the PRAM via keyboard and motherboard etc etc and everytime I reboot it crashes at the same point with a screen corruption and reboot. When I tried to boot in safe mode it the bar got 50% of the way across and it rebooted. I booted in verbose mode and single user mode and on both the last entry related to 'Ambrosiaaudiosupport' (as best I can remember) before it rebooted itself again. I sent the Kernel Panic to Apple but as I cannot get back into the OS I cannot obtain another.
Is there a solution to this please, and if so what do I need to do to rectify it
    Many thanks in advance
    Alan

If you can't boot in the usual way, try a safe boot. During startup, you’ll see a progress bar, and then the login screen, which appears even if you normally log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out these instructions. Safe mode is slower than normal, and some things won’t work at all. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is on a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. If you're able to boot, launch the Console application in any of the following ways: ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.) ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens. ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid. Select the most recent panic log under the heading System Diagnostic Reports on the left. If you don't see that heading, select   View ▹ Show Log List   from the menu bar. Post the entire contents of the panic report — the text, please, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don't post shutdownStall, spin, or hang reports.

  • Mac Pro 2008 always crash after sleep and after first start

    Hello, new in the forum,
2 years ago, I replaced the main disk of a Mac Pro 2008 for a SSD Samsung 470 256 Go.
Until then, it always crashed 1 or 5 minutes after sleep mode (which I didn't used much), and not always 10 to 15 minutes after the first start of the day.
No matter if I was working on it or not… Suitcase installed or not (no font problem here). Rest of the day was fine (if no sleep !).
The difference of speed was so big and "good" that I dealed with it. I though that the Mac Pro was a little old for the SSD technology, and that Apple would fix it, with chance…
    2 weeks ago, I installed Maverick :
I got crashs during the work flow too. I needed to re-start 3 times at least… Re-start without extension was ok (or not), re-start, crash, re-start without extension, restart ok. I used Onyx, did PRAM too. And sometimes, I needed to re-install Maverick or even to do a clean-install !
So I suspected the Samsung 470 for all (sleep and work crashs) and replaced it for a Samsung 840 Pro 512 Go.
And the Mac Pro returned to Mountain Lion.
Not really better : no crash one day (yeeeees!) and crash after the first start the next day (nooooo!). Every time I tested sleep mode, it crashed.
    My system :
    Mac Pro 3.1 - 2,8 GHz - Quad
Mountain Lion, 10 Go ram DDR2, ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT, 30' cinema display.
Adobe CS5 alone (minimal install) with Onyx to repair after each crash.
Could it be the video card, the mother board, the age of the boy ?
    Thanks a lot !
    Christophe S

    Edit !
I said that Finder and apps were blocked after 10 seconds (without extension).
But it was to clic on Launchpad that blocked all, and 5 minutes later it works again.
I did clic again on Launchpad, it blocked and 2 minutes later it appeared full screen but with rainbow circle, and quit.
    - Restarted with extensions. Kernel panic!
    - Restarted the mac and the grey screen with Apple blocked, without any mouse this time. 15 minutes later, still blocked.
    - Forced restart without extension. Here are the reports of Kernel Panic and EtreCheck:

  • Os lion crashing on mac pro now and then after startup trying to open first app

Os lion crashing on mac pro now and then after startup trying to open first app like safari, nothing seems to respond then I restart it and its ok. Then after many uses it does it again.

Take it to an Apple Store.

    I've tried holding r, command + option + p + r, option + r, c.
    That command does nothing.
    Try option/command/R
Don't press it until you hear the chime, don't release it until you see recovery loading, don't press other random combinations unless you know what they do.

  • Why does my 2006 Mac Pro 1,1 crash on startup?

    Hi, folks--
My 2006 Mac Pro is regularly crashing on startup with a kernel panic. It will chime on startup and usually show me the Apple startup screen with the spinning wheel-- but after that, I get the multi-language "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button until it turns off, then press the Power button again" message. Sometimes it doesn't even get there-- the spinning wheel just freezes, and stays frozen. Every once in a while, the Mac will start up, but the mouse will be so unresponsive that it takes me several minutes to mouse over to Restart so I can try again. (I've checked the mouse on another computer and it works fine.)
    Additional info:
    • I have one SSD startup disk with Lion, and two HDD startup disks with Snow Leopard. Starting up with any of these three disks results in the problems described above. This suggests to me that it's a hardware problem, rather than a problem with a specific startup disk.
    • I tried starting up from my Snow Leopard Install disk. It was able to start up successfully. All the data on my hard drives seemed to be intact, including Lion Install, so I tried re-installing Lion on my SSD. It showed the blue progress bar for a minute. Then it said it would restart my computer in 30 seconds-- at which point, I once again got the multi-language "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button ETC" crash. If even the install disk is crashing, this again suggests a hardware problem.
    • I set the Mac Pro to target mode, and used it as a startup disk for my wife's Macbook. It functioned just fine and there were no crashes. Again, confirmation that it is a hardware problem with my Mac Pro.
    • I have zapped the PRAM. I have also run Disk Utility, repaired permissions, and verified the disk. This did not fix the issue. (Not surprising if it is a hardware problem.)
    • HOWEVER:  I put in the install disk that came with the computer originally and was able to complete the Hardware Test. I chose the most thorough option. It did not find any problems.
    • This started happening three days ago. I'm not aware of any recent changes to the system that could have caused this. The most recent change I made was installing a Radeon HD 5770  graphics card and an SSD drive, more than a month ago. There was no sign of trouble after I installed either of them (except for some problems putting the Mac Pro to sleep, which is apparently a known issue with the Radeon 5770 in this model Mac Pro).
    • Weirdly, after I fiddle with the Mac Pro for an hour or so (run diagnostics, reboot it repeatedly, etc) it seems to start working. If there is indeed a hardware problem, then perhaps something works better when it's warmed up.
Is there anything you'd suggest I try? Or am I stuck lugging it to the Genius Bar? I don't have a car, so this is a bit of a pain…
Thanks in advance for any help you can give!

Thanks, The Hatter. I'm working through all the links you've provided and see if I can narrow down the problem.
And, Grant, thanks as well-- I really appreciate the specific information. You've enabled me to track down the panic log -- but they are indeed baffling. I'm pasting one below, in case somebody wiser than I can interpret it for me.

  • Mac Pro Early 2008 will not boot off Win7 Install DVD

    Hello,
I am hoping someone out there will have encountered something similar and have some suggestions or ideas, because at this point I can't think of anything else to try.
I have a 2.8 Ghz 8-core Mac Pro (Early 2008) with an Nvidia 8800GT Graphics card. I am running OS 10.6.2, fully patched and updated.
I am attempting to install Windows 7 Ultimate via Boot Camp, and am encountering a rather odd problem.
Once I have launched Boot Camp Assistant it allows me to partition the drive and does so correctly, but when it attempts to reboot off the Windows 7 installation DVD, I encounter a blank grey-white screen similar to that which you normally get on startup but without the Apple logo. This continues for some time (it seems to vary), and then the screen goes dark and the monitor says it is receiving no signal. The fans on the Mac Pro go for a while, then it goes to sleep. I've tried leaving it for a couple hours, no dice.
I've tried both the 32-bit and 64-bit Windows install disks. I had the release candidate for Windows 7 installed previously, and it worked perfectly. I have since tried that same install DVD that I used to install the release candidate, and it encounters the exact same issue. Booting up off the Snow Leopard Install DVD works fine.
I tried doing a clean install of Snow Leopard on a spare drive, booting off that, and then starting from square 1 using Boot Camp Assistant to re-partition that same drive. Same problem. No matter what I do or try, my Mac Pro does not want to boot off this install disc. I have yet to try the disc in another machine to see if it works there, and I will as soon as I can, but the fact that the RC disc worked a few months back and now will not seems to rule out the boot discs as defective. I've also tried both my internal optical drives with no change, and no other discs have any issues.
I've already spent an hour and a half talking to Apple Technical Support, and they seemed stumped, so I'm hoping someone will have a notion. If not, I understand and appreciate you taking the time to read this- I have no idea at this point, and I'm generally a pretty knowledgeable user.
    - Andrew

    Thank you for your reply,
Pull all the drives you have other than the one that you will install Windows 7 to.
I think I will try this next.
Don't put Windows 7 on the same drive as OS X, give it its own.
That was initially what I started out doing.
And you don't even need Boot Camp Assistant.
True, but it's what Apple suggests using.
Might also want to try moving the monitor cable to the other card port.
Hmm, I think I'll try that.
Any other PCI cards or devices attached or installed should also be questioned or disconnected.
    I've disconnected everything I could.
Always a good idea to start fresh which I assume you are doing (not trying to upgrade over RC etc).
Yes, the drive was empty to start with.
Honestly it seems like the Mac Pro is generally refusing to boot from any Windows disc. Things I've tried since my initial post:
    - Loaded Windows 7 Install disc into my room mate's windows PC... loaded up fine, got to install screen
    - Tried his OEM copy of Windows Vista 32-bit, same issue
At this point it seems like maybe some kind of firmware issue or some kind or graphics driver issue, but I'm pretty much grasping at straws at this point. It doesn't seem like it's even getting to the point where hard drives or anything matters.
It does recognize that I have a Windows 7 install disc inserted when I use the boot selector/startup disk chooser.
Thanks for the ideas, I'll try those out and see if any of them help,

  • Mac Pro 3.1 won't boot

A couple of weeks ago i turned on my mac pro and it didn't boot!
The video card fan whirls around for about 5 seconds and clicks off.
After looking around this forum and others for a while i thought it might be a power supply issue. So i took the tower to my local Apple repairer to get fixed. I called a week later to find out what the deal was and was told that its not the power supply and they were still looking at it. A few days later i got a message saying that it had bad ram and was fixed. leaving me 2gig of ram down (i had 8 gig of ram leaving me with 6 gig) and $75 out of pocket.
    No sweat!
About a week later it did it again! Not booting!
i push the power button a few times and it booted! Phew!
It did this for a couple more weeks. Not booting sometimes. A few pushes of the power button and away we go.
Until of course i had a recording session booked and the mac pro would not turn on at all!
I've taken all the ram out (8 1gig sticks) and just installed 2 gig at a time. Going through all of them. Even the one the repairers said was bad. With no luck. I've reset the SMC and take the battery out and put a multi meter over it and it seems fine. (I must say that one day the screen went all weird. Kind of like blurred checkers for a minute but came good again.) I tried to boot it up without the graphics card, no luck!
I'm not sure what i should do??
Take it back to the repairer for another $75 or buy some more ram and see what happens.
Is it possible that ALL the ram is stuffed?
Is it possible to boot up without the video card?
Any advice you guys could give me would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks heaps
    Damien

High quality while inexpensive work perfectly. 4% hit (but then use 8 DIMMs and you get 17% boost too).

  • I cannot get my Mac Pro (Original) MacPro1,1 to boot with the 64 Bit kernel in 10.6.8

I cannot get my Mac Pro (Original) MacPro1,1 to boot with the 64 Bit kernel in 10.6.8 (this is a 2 x 3Dual-Core Intel Xeon machine).
    Firmware = MP11.005C.B08 (EFI 1.2) 1.7f10 (SMC 1.1)
Will it not  run the 64 bit kernel?
Is there a firmware upgrade to allow this?
    Should I bother?
It won't boot with the Key 6 & 4 method.
    or using Terminal command;
    sudo systemsetup -setkernelbootarchitecture x86_64
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance...
    Eric

Because it can't and doesn't have a 64-bit supported firmware.
UEFI (EFI64) was not finalized and adopted until very late 2007 and introduced in 2008, by Apple, Intel, other members of EFI Group and Unified EFI.  The Mac Pro Mid-2010 was  the first time though that 64-bit mode was the default.
Does it matter? not really. you can't install 48GB RAM anyway, while there are some improvements from 64-bit kernal.
Also can't boot Windows 7 64-bit DVD to install properly. But you can run Windows 64-bit kernel because you have a 64-bit Xeon.

  • Mac Pro will not restart after installation of Lion.  Help!

Mac Pro will not restart after installation of Lion.  Help

    Reinstalling Lion Without the Installer
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alterhatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

  • Hello. My mac pro early 2008 restarts after sleep mode and it works slower. I tested it with apple hardwear test and it seems to be ok. Thank you.

Hello. My mac pro early 2008 restarts after sleep mode and it works slower. I tested it with apple hardwear test and it seems to be ok. Thank you.

    Try this:
clone your system and repair it with Disk Warrior instead
Or try a clean test system install on another drive
A must: SmcFanControl 2.2 - a mere 400 rpm extra to keep air cooling up
Try to run w/o externals. MyBook included.
Is that a 7200.11 1TB? they had a lot of issues.
Run AHT off your OEM DVD.
2008 had to have EFI and SMC updates to deal with freezes on wake from sleep, and like all models, high inrush current.  Hopefully you have a UPS and is 1500VA unit.
When you do hard restart from power button, you almost certainly add more directory errors and to files requiring immediate attention to repair and rebuild the directory; and to scan and repair and delete cache and temp files and folders. A must. Invest in bootable backups SuperDuper along with Disk Warrior (or TechTool Pro 6, maybe Drive Genius 3 but I'd rate that #3).
TimeMachine has its own bad habits, especially with Green drives and some externals.
Try to rule out everything and then add back one at a time.
And it may just be time to replace the 8800, very common, a couple threads this week, and it is 3 yrs old.  Might want ATI 5870 or 5770.

  • Aspire 6920 crashes after booting correctly - screeen zig zags and freezes - any ideas to help plse?

My aspire 6920 crashes after booting correctly - screen zig zags and freezes - any ideas to help plse? This does not happen in safemode which I am working in now - I have seen a list of dowloadable drivers on the acer site but not at all sure if I should download any. If laptop is really on its way out I will have to let it go - but I would appreciate any advice to extent its life,  Thanks

Many thanks - relieved that it can be done but I am very unconfident that I can do this - is the display driver the display adapter in Vista? Not at all sure how to install new driver from Acer site - Could I use 'Drivers for free' download - I tried to set up an account with them after seeing their free download on CINET but not able to from 'safe mode' and laptop crashes when I try to do anything ( after about a minute ) in ordinary mode.  Any further advice welcome, thanks

  • Mac Pro display remains black after start up.

My 2008 Mac Pro display remains black after start up.  It is plugged in properly and the light comes on, but the screen stays black.  It first started doing this about a week ago, but after a manual restart or two, it would start up properly with the display working.  Today the display has remained black every time I've tried to start up.  Any suggestions for troubleshooting would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Safe Mode uses a very simple way of talking to the screen -- it does not even load the screen driver, and it uses a very common low resolution.
If it does not work that way, it simply does not work. You need a replacement graphics card.
