Mac randomly creates Mission Control desktops

Hi there!
I have recently installed a fresh copy of OS X Yosemite, and everything is running nice and fast. BUT, one issue whihc is more annoying than anything, but I'm sure it causing some performance drain, is desktops are randomly being created in Mission Control....I don't even use this feature.
The issue occurred before I fresh installed Yosemite, leading me to think it must be one of the apps I have kept, but I'm not sure.
The only app that has an icon in the top menu bar and starts at startup is BetterTouchTool.
Any ideas please?
Max

Are you running those apps in Full Screen and possibly closing one or the other, then re-opening at a later time?
Full Screen programs become desktops of their own, and are placed into the queue at the time they are Full Screened. I don't believe they hold their position like the Desktops do.

  • Folders for Mission Control Desktops

    I think this would be a solution for seperate folders for Mission Control Desktops!
    It would be very useful to be able to choose visibility for folders. What I mean is if I have different desktops on mission control then I could have separate folders for different desktops. I realize that if a desktop gets deleted this would cause problems and those folders would get deleted, but wonder if you created a mission control main folder where all folders on the hard drive are located and then you can go into that folder and choose visibility options. Like I have a school desktop and a work desktop so I could "right click>get info>" and  so I would choose ~/work_Desktop not just ~/Desktop. This would allow for people to literally feel like they had separate computers for work, personal, etc.. PLEASE consider this!! It would take mac to a different level and superior to PCs.
    Do you think this would work?

    This is intriguing, not least of all because the semantic problem of using the word "desktop" to refer to completely different things has made some people pretty grumpy
    I use compulsively pushing the envelope of my work environment as a way to keep my scripting skills in shape, and so I couldn't resist doing a quick proof-of-concept to see if implementing what you want is possible without hacking anything that an average users shouldn't touch.  There's a very workable solution at the level of what I think of as "elegant band-aids."  I can see it would even possible to have it both ways - a desktop shared between all spaces and one that's unique to each space.
    It is.  It's not even difficult - it requires understanding a few simple concepts, basic familiarity with Automator, enabling the root account on your system and about 5 lines of AppleScript that I've already written and tested.
    I'm going to do it for my own use, but if anyone else wants it, just ask and I'll type up the instructions.  If enough people want it, I'll write a script to automate it.  lleH, if there's a clamor, I'll write an little app.  I can understand why Apple would choose not to implement it in the interest of elegance and simplicity, but also understand why expert users would like to complicate matters just a bit.

  • Can I Share Specific Mission Control Desktop?

    I am looking to share only a specific Mission Control desktop on another Mac. I am including a screenshot graphic because it's difficult to describe.
    As you can see, I have 4 Mission Control desktops, and want to screen share the red one only with a different Mac.
    Does anyone know how this might be done, or recommend an extension that could facilitate this?
    Mac OS 10.7.5 Lion.
    Thanks.

    Try target disk mode:

    Other wise use a USB thumb drive or a HDD to transfer them.

    Does anyone know a way in Lion to query which Mission Control Desktop is currently showing, when using either AppleScript, ASOC, or OBJC?
    I want to write a utility (either a script or a program) whose behavior depends on which Desktop is currently showing on the screen.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.

  • What freedom do we have to modify Mission Control-desktops?

    I mean: Can I label a desktop in Mission Control-View? Can I give priority or order a specific kind or just certain desktops/fullscreen-windows up there?

  • Thunderbird Mission Control Desktop/AutoConfig not working for some users

    I have the file: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Thunderbird\defaults\pref\custom.js"
    It contains:
    pref("general.config.obscure_value", 0);
    pref("general.config.filename", "TMcustom.cfg");
    I have the file: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Thunderbird\TMcustom.cfg"
    It contains:
    var promptService = Components.classes["@mozilla.org/embedcomp/prompt-service;1"]
    .getService(Components.interfaces.nsIPromptService);
    promptService.alert(null, "title", "testing");
    For most of my users the alert pops up fine when I start Thunderbird, but for a few it doesn't. All of the machines where setup with the same install script. If I log into one of the machines where it's not working as a different user, then it works fine, so I know the files are in the right spot. So why would it not work for specific users? Is there something in the user's Windows profile that could cause it to not work? Or are there any other suggestions?

  • Mission Control Lion 10.7.3 assigning apps to desktops

    How do I get an app to stick in a desktop.
    I have the mission control desktop and then desktops 1 through 7.
    I have them all opening up various applicaitons, but even though I move the app to the desktop I want, and I shut down with the app open in that desktop, on restart it opens up in the wrong desktop...always the same one, but always the wrong one.
    iTunes - I put it in Desktop 7, its there when I shut down.  It always opens up in Desktop 1.  I don't have trouble with calendar, mail, addressbook.
    Also, sometimes 'finder' folders that I have left open in a specific window when I shut down do not open up on restart.  They do sometimes, but most of the time not.
    Thanks!

    If you are running the program ctrl+click on its dock's icon.
    Choose Options -> This Desktop
    If you also want to always keep in sequence all spaces, in System Preferences uncheck

  • Assigning Dock items to multi screen desktops on Mission Control (ML)

    Right so I've recently bought a new rMBP.  I use it both in my studio where I hook it up to a Samsung external monitor which works fine, and outside in various offices and other locations.
    On my previous MBP, which was running Snow Leopard, I used Spaces extensively across a variety of different apps/programmes.  I've started to use Mission Control, as a replacement of Spaces.  My only issue with it is when I connect it to my external monitor, I'd like to assign apps not just to specific desktops but also to specific screens within that 'mission control desktop'.
    Eg. On spaces, I had Mail and Calendar assigned to one Space.  When connected to external monitor, I would move mail onto the external display and keep calendar on the laptop screen, so could effectively view both full screen on two different displays.  These settings seemed to stick when I turned the laptop off, or disconnected and reconnected it to the external screen.  With Mission Control however, it never sticks.  If the laptop goes off, disconnects from the screen, or even logs out, the mail and calendar app will be in the same 'Desktop', but they won't assign to the specific screens I want them to, and will just revert to the primary display 'Desktop', meaning I have to move the apps all over again across all my different Mission Control Desktops.
    Is there a way to 'assign to this desktop' when working dual screen that sticks? Hope that makes sense. I've had a look throughout the support pages but haven't come across anyone with the same problem yet...

  • Is Mission Control the new Spaces?

    Just move from Mountain Lion to Yosemite. All is great but many questions. When my cursor wonders off to the side of the monitor the page I am on disappears and I have to click on the side to bring it back. Can I deactivate this? Is there such a thing as spaces where I can control/left arrow to a different screen?
    Thank you!

    Still works in Mission Control Desktops. Control up arrow is Mission Control and control down arrow is Expose.

  • Dock Crashes When Accessing Mission Control

    For some reason, the Dock crashes and reboots every time I try and get into Mission Control. The log is posted below from Console.app. Anyone know why this might be happening? I'm on the latest version of Mavericks.
    The only strange thing that's happened to my OS is a bash script that ran without admin permissions that started deleting files (there was a bug in the script I wrote) off my drive in alphabetical order. Mostly that just screwed up some applications like the Adobe Creative Suite and Autodesk Maya, but it perhaps had an impact here?

    Hi ..
    Might be corrupted dock preferences.
    Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
    Type or copy paste the following;
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist
    Click Go then move the com.apple.dock.plist file to the Trash.
    Restart your Mac then try Mission Control.

  • Mission control changes layering of open documents

    When I toggle between mission control desktop spaces, if I have multiple Word or Excel docs (may be true of others, but this is where I see it happen), when I return to the docs space a different document is on top but not selected, so I have to select the top doc then re-select the document I want. It's like the original doc remains on top virtually but not visually. If I toggle back and forth several times, a different doc may be on top each time. This practically kills the value of multiple spaces.
    While I'm at it, I hate that opening a document in one space, say from an Outlook email attachment, the file opens in the same space as the originating document rather than switching to the space I've dedicated for the document app, such as Excel.
    Do I have to give up using mission control or does someone have a fix?
    Thanks!

    Yes.  I used to get this problem.  Seems to have been largely fixed with 10.7.3.  I deleted all my desktops and started again.
    There are still some bugs though.  For example, if you have an app with multiple windows open and then put it in full screen mode.  Command-tab doesn't take you to the primary window.
    Also the keyboard shortcut to get a spotlight window results in a switch to the finder but doesn't display the finder window.

  • Mission Control not loading

    Since upgrading to Yosemite, I can't load mission control:
    - The fingers up move on the track pad doesn't do anything.
    - The hot corners do not work.
    - When I select an app in the dock, it doesn't go to the right space anymore.
    - I can't add / remove spaces, the icons for it do not appear.
    When I try to load mission control nothing happens, it quits instantly: no error, no console output, etc.
    I have attached a trace of the app, in case it can help find what is wrong: http://pastebin.com/0FRFf3Q8
    I have no idea where to look!

    Can anyone run a trace of "Mission Control" for me? I want to see what it does as mine is not working at all.
    The steps are as follow:
    1) kill mission control so it's not running
    sudo killall "Mission Control"
    2) open a shell and type:
    sudo dtruss -afs -n "Mission Control" > ~/Desktop/trussoutput.txt
    3) load mission control
    by clicking on the icon..
    The output of the shell will go to a file called 'trussoutput.txt' on your desktop; if you could send me that file, or put the contents on pastebin.com, it would help be greatly in trying to figure out what is happening. Mine seems to be stopping abruptly after loading the GSS library...
    thanks!

  • Mission Control Bug

    Hi,
    I found a bug on Mission Control.
    I think i will explain good.. sorry about my language.
    I have two applications:
    - Adobe Flash
    - Cornerstone
    I assign "Desktop 2" to Adobe Flash.
    I assign "Desktop 3" to Cornerstone (SVN Client)
    When i go to "Desktop 3 - Cornerstone" and inside of the application i double click on *.fla, Lion goes to the Desktop 2 and returns to Desktop 3...
    If i go to Mission Control, i can see these two applications are on "Desktop 3" and "Desktop 2" is empty.
    And Mission Control "Desktop 3" shows the two applications like this:
    Other question, is not posible to set custom order of desktops?
    Thanks,
    manu

    I really a bug, or im doing something wrong? thanks i report the bug.. i hope they fix fast
    And my last question of custom order of desktops?
    Thanks

    I'm trying to find a clear answer as to what is the expected behavior when assigning an application the mission control desktop option of "none"?  What I'm noticing is it acts as if it was assigned to what ever desktop I was on when opening the Application.  Does that sound right?

    Yes, but you can also have different windows from the same application on different desktops. Put differently, you can more or less use the application independently on each desktop. Does that make sense?
