Mac randomly shuts down
Whenever my mac is NOT plugged in, it will randomly shut down around 30 minutes during use. It has full battery life and the software is up-to-date

Yes the fan is running. That's actually why I wanted to put it to sleep - it is so loud!
Any other possibilities? You don't think its on its way out do you?

Mac randomly shuts down while using imovie

ISSUE
While editing movies in iMovie, the screen suddenly and unexpectedly goes black. There is no way to get the screen back on, the power button does nothing. The only way to reboot the computer is to unplug/replug the AC and start all over. All work used prior to the black out is lost.does a screen display "you need to restart your computer" in about 6 different languages, or does it just shut off? If so, you may have a problem with your fans. I would recommend running the AHT.

Mac braggs no crash, but random Shut Down
I enjoy my wk 22 BMB it was working great until yest. now random shut downs. I did full reinstall seemed to work ok, but it happened again. It seemed to happen soon after I installed the coredue temp software. Don't know if this is coincidental, or just circumstantial. Will Apple please fix all our macbooks. These random shut downs are becoming a huge plague. PC might not be as nice, but they don't shut down every other hour.
I just wanted to add my voice to this problem too. I have a new black MacBook and I have had it since they were first introduced. Everything was fine until last week. All of a sudden I have these random shut downs. I have called AppleCare tech support and gone to this genius bar twice. No one there had even acknowledged this problem. When it is a huge problem. Yesterday, finally, they told me they know. They have not come up with an answer yet. I have read that people have had their logic boards replaced 3 times and nothing had changed.
I am very upset but I know Apple will make good on this, once they figure out why this is happening. Just a major inconvenience of modern times and technology.
One other thing, this is not just happening to a few people, like someone suggested. It is a very real problem with a lot of MacBooks. I think the newer ones are okay from what I have been told. It's the early ones....like mine...that have this issue.
The MacBook, by the way, is an awesome computer. I love it. Apple will find a fix. It just might take a little while. -
Mid-2010 15" MacBook Pro, random shut-downs running Mavericks,
Since the last two Mavericks OS updates, beginning April 21st, I am experiencing random shut-downs on a mid-2010 15" MacBook Pro, any suggestions? I've seen posts regarding the known logic board issue, I had no problem before the last two OS updates. Seems to be related to sleep/wake. Running 10.9.2
Hi Andy, would you take more look at this log. . . random shut down happened again, look at 11:54 am and before, I re-booted at 12:02. Had suspected my external monitor at the office, laptop does not do this at home, ran for three straight days, no issues. No monitor connected today as a test. Plugged in at the office for just over three hours and bam. could be the battery thing, will try AHT or Apple Diagnostics, could it be a Time Machine related issue? Thanks in advance.

Mid 2010 15" Macbook Pro Random Shut down and Restart
I know this questions have more than likely come up a few times. But I have a mid 2010 15" Macbook pro that, for the last year, has randomly shut-down and restated displaying an error message each time. I have had this computer into three different computer repair shops over the last few months, two of which were apple certified, and have had a range of reasons provided for the issue. Anything from Motherboard to hard drive to virus. I have replaced the hard drive, did a complete reformat three times, and downgraded my OSX. But I still have the same issue. I recently came across some support tickets referring to an issue with this model of Mac, something to do with the graphics card. I downloaded a program that was supposed to be a work around, but am still having shutdown issues. I also heard that apple did a free replacement of the motherboard on these machines within 3 yeas of purchase. Obviously I am past that point, but I was hoping that there would be some other suggestions. I have ran an etrecheck on my machine and have attached it below. Can anyone provided any ideas of how I can fix this without having to buy a new motherboard?

My iMac (27-Inch, 2012) is randomly shutting down
Hello,
Wanted to ask here before I bring my iMac in.
I'm having an issue with my iMac randomly shutting down from what seems like a KERNEL PANIC.
I haven't been able to pin down what is causing the shutdowns/kernel panic.
We usually leave this iMac on 24/7 since we use it with Apple TV.
I started noticing about a month ago coming back to the computer after a few hour I would log in and I would get a window asking to restore my apps because
the computer had shut down due to some error/problem. I will usually submit the report to Apple when asked to do so.
It's now happening much more frequently. I'd say about every hour or so. Even when I'm using the computer after a while it'll start to feel sluggish, almost like a quarter to half second delay for mouse and keyboard commands. Then after about 10 minutes it slows down even more until "POOF" black screen....then Kernel Panic grey screen asking me to press a key to restart. It seems to happen regardless of the application I am using.
At first I thought it was one of my USB hard drives or USB HUB that was causing the issue but last night i unmounted all drives and peripherals (except mouse and keyboard) to see if that helped. Woke up this morning to the same login after Kernel Panic / shutdown.
Repaired Disk Permissions then ran apple hardware test this morning. said everything was working correctly. Problem still persists.

I would recommend tracking down the app that uses this and unionist all it completely from your computer. Also if you have upgraded the RAM on the machine you may have a RAM falling DIMM or it may have become unseated or it might not be the correct specs for your machine. -
24" iMac mid 2009 random shut downs
I am really struggling with my machine, since several months it crashes/shutdown repeatedly.
It is always the same behaviour, the power just goes out, no program crashes, no spinning beach balls, no nothing, just a blank screen and of course no power. It can happen while browsing or while watching Youtube or just while creating a simple document. It really is random.
I have done everything I possibly could including:
1. Full re-install after clearing the HDD and overwriting it several times with "0"
2. Booting and running from an external drive with same OS
3. Running both the small and big hardware tests without any indication of errors
4. Running memory-tests and also replacing the old 2x2 GB with 2x4 GB of RAM
4. Have had it plugged in directly to the wall outlet and together with other machines in a plug board
5. Left the machine a service shop and they did the same things but could not get the machine to crash in two weeks(ARGH!)
6. Went back to the service shop and they had the machine running for a month straight without any crash/shutdown.
None of the above has made any difference at all. I collected my machine from the shop again recently and the first random shut down appeared afte les then 24 hours, it has crashed 3 times since then.
The system log does not show anything that can give it away.
It seems like I can induce the crash by multitasking and having a lot of tabs open running flash in the browser, but I get no errors in the logs to indicate that I am right, but the crashes mostly happen when I browse (but that is also what the machine is used for 90% of the time) I use Chrome, Safari and Firefox randomly.
I have found numerous posts on different forums from people stating the exact same thing, I really like Apple but this is unbearable to say the least, there is officially nothing wrong with my machine since it happens randomly, without any error messages, but I can not use my computer since it can shut down at any given time.
What to do?

My mac will shut down without warning when Im using battery power. Sometimes it won't turn back on until I attach it to the power cord. My battery is always charged when this happens.

I have had battery and random shut down issues as well.
Got my Macbook last July and loved it until about April, then...
It started with the battery light switching from orange to green repeatedly. I tried re-calibrating the battery (which I do every couple of month as instructed in the user manual)and noticed that it would just shut down when the battery got low rather than give me a warning.
I took it in to an apple technician store in Montréal Canada to see what was up, they changed the logic board. They did nothing to the battery. They said it was a logic board problem. I brought my repaired macbook back home and everything was fine for a few days.
I started to experience random shutdowns in the following days, and the battery problem re-appeared. I brought it back in and they replaced the logic board again. They did nothing about the battery. I brought my repaired macbook home and everything was fine for a few days... And then it started random shutting down and doing all sorts of weird battery stuff again.
Is it odd that the apple store just kept replacing the logic board, eventhough it seems quite obvious that this is a battery problem?
Would calling AppleCare be wiser than going back to the technicians (I subscribed to apple care recently as I don't see an close end to the problems that I am having)? -
Another Start Up/Random Shut Down Problem
Ok, so I know there are a million threads aleady about this, but I really cant seem to find someone who has a real good suggestion, if there is any...So I have a Mac Book 512/60GB and have had the random shut down thing happen a few times. One time (today actualy) I couldnt start up. I pushed the button about 5 times and the light came on and then turned right off. I waited a little bit and then it worked. Twice when this happened and after I started up the light for the iSight stayed on and the camera didnt work until I restarted. I was in iChat using Vid chat when this happened. I was thinking about making a genius bar appointment to see what their advice was because my local store seems to be up to date on most things and this seems to be a big problem, but I figured I would check on here first. Does anyone have an actual solution that has worked for them???

Mac Book Mac OS X (10.4.7) 2Ghz, 512 RAM, 60GBWell the Genius bar ppl were great as always. They told me they could do it in-store but it would take more than 4 days and it seems that people have been getting theirs back fairly quick. I backed up everything on my iBook and had the macbook shipped to my school, so hopefully it will beat me there. He told me they have seen several of these, but when I tried to get details they seemed a little hush hush and confused. The common agreement from the geniuses was that it was a logic bored issue and thats what he wrote on the work authorization, i also need a topcase replacement as there is obvious discoloration. Im gona assume that they do run additional tests and not just follow what the "genius" says, if it is not the logic board that is causing the probs...right? When I get my macbook will it say the work that was done on it?? Hopefully this will be fixed, because a random shutdown macbook is baisicly a useless macbook when you use it all the time in school.

My Macbook Pro (early 2011, 15") randomly shuts down after being turned on from sleep mode?
-So over the past week, I find that my macbook pro will randomly shut down within 1 minute of being turned on from sleep mode. Within the first few days of this, I figured out that it will only happen if I move my mac around before its completely into sleep mode. BUT now it shuts down regardless or preparation before sleep mode and everytime I turn my computer back on, I log in, and then have restore my chrome window tabs and stuff. What is going on??
-Do I need to replace my drive??

if you boot into Safe mode, and then immediately restart into normal mode, log in, and put it to sleep, does it still exhibit the same random shutdowns afterwards? -
Has anyone experienced random wake/sleep cycles? (NOT random shut down)
I bought my macbook on August 1, 2006, and previously had a problem with my it randomly shutting down. I had that fixed in December. Now I'm having the opposite problem, essentially. Whenever I put my computer to sleep, it wakes itself up, waits a few seconds, puts itself back to sleep, waits a few more seconds, wakes itself up... a constant annoying cycle. It doesn't matter if I put it to sleep by closing the lid or by choosing "sleep" from the apple menu, it still does this. I thought that perhaps one of my applications was causing my macbook to wake itself up, but this happens even when no applications are in use and I'm completely disconnected from the internet. This is driving me CRAZY because the noise of it waking itself up keeps me awake, and having to close out of all of my applications and shut down every night or whenever I want to transport it is terribly bothersome. Plus... the fact that it is waking itself from sleep can't be positive! Does anyone have any advice? I'm going to take it into the mac store but I'm super busy and wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions until then.

macbook Mac OS X (10.4.8)I started having an almost identical problem. I would put the computer to sleep the screen would go black and seem to shutdown for a couple of seconds. Then the CD drive would make it's noise and the computer would wake up. I reproduced it with a clean install of OSX. If I had a password set on the computer and did not enter the password the computer would go to back to sleep and then repeat the process again and again.
The first day it happened I could reproduce it every time. Now it's not so constant. I need to get the CPU to around 140 degrees Fahrenheit for a few minutes and then put the computer to sleep by typing command-option-eject.
I suspect that there is a faulty cable or sensor. Conincidentally when the problem ocurred my bluetooth also seemed to "disappear" the computer could not detect the bluetooth module. That leads me to believe that there might be two cables one that is a case-open-close sensor and a bluetooth cable sensor and that they are getting pinched.

MacPro randomly shuts down after upgrading to GTX 660
So I've had the EVGA GTX 285 mac edition in my MacPro 3,1 for a while now and decided to upgrade to the EVGA GTX 660 because I wanted a card that would provide more power for my 3d work and allow more gaming potential when I'm not working. After the upgrade I have been experiencing random shut downs. At first I thought it was during heavy loads (from my 3d software) but yesterday a shut down occured when I was just typing up an email with hardly anything running in the background. I've tried to diagnose the problem but to no avail. I believe the power supply is enough because the older card uses 2 of the power ports inside the MacPro while this new card uses just one. It's not overheating because everything runs at around 30C - 50C (rarely spiking to 58C.) Anyone know what could be the cause? I am working on my Windows partition by the way.
How interesting...we've noticed the same thing on 3 different occasions as recently as this a.m.. My wife was online for school, and the screen suddenly went "almost" black. There was nothing to do but shut down and turn it back on.
In 3 years since we've had this iMac, and running on 10.4, we never had this problem, so we're also hoping the community out there has some input on this issue.

IMac randomly shuts down after Leopard Upgrade
My wife's iMac randomly shuts down since we installed Leopard. It wasn't doing this before the Leopard upgrade.
It takes about 5 mins. of inactivity after the machine enters sleep mode, then it shuts down. We've searched the Discussions but have yet to see an answer to our question. Nothing but an iSight is plugged in to the machine. Any suggestions?Same problem with random shut downs that get more and more frequent making the computer unusable. Took to Apple Store where they did not recognise the problem - tried replacing RAM then power cable then power supply. Said problem was fixed but started to recur within a short time of using it back home. Used install discs to reinstall the original operating system (Mac OS X 10.5.2) and the problem resolved - on upgrading to Mac OS X 10.5.8 the problem immediately recurred. Have gone back to 10.5.2 now and all seems okay.
Seems strange that there are so many postings about this and Apple Store (Genius staffseem to be unaware of it as a problem).

IMac Randomly Shuts Down -Overheating Problem?
I've posted in these forums once before about my iMac randomly shutting down. I believed I had solved the problem by following another users instructions which were as follows:
"Machines that are just randomly shutting down are usually caused by defective hardware. The only thing that can be done about that is to call Apple and have it replaced or serviced. There is probably not any one particular solution as it could be any number of the internal components failing and the resulting symptoms could be the same.
If you'd like to do some hardware tests yourself before calling Apple that can be done. First try resetting the SMC: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303446
Next insert the original gray install disk, restart your iMac, then hold down the "d" key until it boots up into the Apple Hardware Test. Run the extended test.
Also if you have Apple Care install TechTool Deluxe from the cd provided. Then run TechTool on your system."
I also removed and replaced of a defective external HD that I thought my be causing problems. But after all these steps, the machine kept turning itself off.
I had read in some forums that it was due to the internal temperature of the iMac. So I downloaded smcfancontrol 2.1 and increased the fan speed on the internal fans. This did bring down the temperature as revealed by the iStat Pro widget. However, I still had another shutdown.
So I turned off the machine, went to bed, and this morning when I turned it on iStat Pro said these were the internal temperatures of the iMac:

I find these numbers to be unbelievable. Especially the airport card. When the whole system seemed to be running hot, the Airport Card said it was 122. It always says something above 100 degrees. The other temperatures also seem out of whack. How can the CPU be 77 degrees after 10 hours of being completely powered down in an office environment that is only 55 degrees?
Has anyone else run into a similar problem?
Has anyone else found the problem to be a faulty temperature sensor (and is there a way to reset it, or does it have to be replaced)?

Well, I have my call in, and I am getting onsite service to replace the logic board, as per Apple's recommendation.
I'm reading the other longer thread (171 replies), and it's disheartening to hear how some of the "geniuses" are handling this problem. They can't replicate it by leaving the mac running overnight, so "the problem doesn't exist". Hello! It's *random*! As in, not easy to replicate!
I'm also a bit disillusioned that the popular Mac sites (TUAW, etc) haven't picked up on this story yet. I emailed TUAW the link to the long thread, and they ignore it. Usually when this gets more "mainstream" press, then Apple finally steps up, acknowledges a problem, and serious fixes are made. Right now, it's a bunch of complainers (me included) in some threads on the Apple site.
I took a huge leap last November, and went from PCs to the Mac platform, after working on my personal migration plans for a month prior - how to move from my photo editing on the PC to the Mac (I wasn't about to buy another full copy of Photoshop, for eg, but I did find out I could upgrade from Win PS to Mac PS), if all the programs I use for photography and design were available on the Mac, learning the ins and outs of shortcut keys, how things are done, etc etc, and was so happy initially when I got the Mac and said goodbye to the PC.
Now I'm literally afraid to do any serious work on the Mac for fear of the "pulled plug" syndrome losing the last 20, 30 minutes of work I've been doing because I didn't save every 2 minutes. And iLife's Pages doesn't autosave (much to my chagrin), so I've lost some long correspondence and articles typed because I didn't save it before the pulled plug o' death.
Not a very nice computing experience.
As a suggestion, maybe everyone reading this and the other thread can flood TUAW.com with a news suggestion to cover this problem. Engadget, Gizmodo too while you're at it. I think once these million-viewers a day blogs cover it, we'll see some real action from Apple.

Troubleshooting: My computer won't turn on
Power or other problems related to unexpected system sleep, shutdown, lights or fans call for an SMC reset. Read all the steps.
Before Resetting the SMC
Try each of the following steps in this order before you reset the SMC. Test the issue after completing each troubleshooting step to determine if the issue still occurs.
Press Command + Option + Escape to force quit any application that is not responding.
Put your Mac to sleep by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Sleep. Wake the computer after it has gone to sleep.
Restart your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Restart.
Shut down your Mac by choosing the Apple () menu from the upper-left menu bar and then choosing Shut Down.
Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own
Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if it's not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
