Mac re-orientation

My first two machines were PowerBooks, but I've spent the last several years in Windoze-land.
Any suggestions for useful books, etc., to help me re-acclimate to Mac World?
I should mention that my last Mac OS was 7.5.
Thanks,
Michael

Hi, I upgraded from a powerbook 190cs sys 7.5.5 to a MacBook.
If you haven't used OS X, then you will need to get used to the dock, the new apple menu and some minor interface changes, but I think that the finder experience has not changed much.
The finder's help menu can be a lot of help, for example the first thing I missed was the "Control Strip" from my old powerbook. If you search for control strip in the help menu, it will explain that it is no longer available in OSX, but it shows the alternatives.
Sometimes I still try to find the "special" menu when emptying the trash.
In OSX you can customize most of the keyboard shortcuts, so I added
-shift-0 for Sleep, just as in old sys 7.5

Can both be used in some way without conflict, or which one would be best, if indeed there is a preference or desired "best practice" across the broadest spectrum of available devices being in common use?
Again, this seems applicable to iPhones, and Safari, and as I'm Mac/Safari oriented, this opened another door in responsive design of which I am absorbing; or trying to understand.

The second version is considered to be preferable, although there's not much to choose between them. The important element is setting width to device-width. Without it, most smartphones will scale the page to fit into a nominal viewport approximately 960px wide.
By the way, there's nothing wrong with working on a specific operating system, but don't become blinkered by your Mac/Safari preference. It's the World Wide Web, not the Mac/Safari Web.

  • Mac Mini envelopes printing full page size from contacts

    Good day.
    So here’s my story.
In early summer I printed out enveoples form "Address Book" for our wedding invitations from a Macbook pro 2.16 GHz running 10.6.8. Everything worked out perfectly.
I then got a Mac Mini 2.7 GHz Core i7  for a wedding gift and I did a data migration from my Macbook Pro to the mac Mini. It was running 10.8.5 and is now running the latest version or Maverics. The printer I used for both envelope printing jobs, an HP CM1415fnw color MPF has also been updated to the latest software version.
The problem I am having is that the Mac mini will NOT print envelopes in the custom envelope size, it always prints full page. It has done this since the data migration form the Macbook Pro running "Address Book" to the Mac Mini 10.8 running "Contacts". I thought is was an operating system issue so I waited for the new OS Maverics.  I did another print out from both computers tonight to see if the issue had resoleved it's self. NOPE. I even do a print preview on the mini which loads up Preview and it shows the custom size, though it prints out full page
All settings on both computers are the same for the custom envelope size.
Anyone know how I can fix the paper size issue?
    Thanks for anyhelp I get

    Hi Rodger_
Thank you for the additional information, it was helpful.
I was speaking with one of my colleagues and we would like you to try the following steps. Once you have completed the steps please try printing again.
    1)    Please reset your printing system, I have included a document on how to do this. Please be aware that this reset deletes all print settings and pending print jobs from your Mac.
    2)    In the "Printers & Scanners" please click on the '+' and choose "Add another printer or scanner from the options (see screen shot)
    3)    Choose your Laserjet CM1415fnw and at the bottom where it says "USE" please change it to the HP Laserjet (see screen shot) instead of AirPrint

  • After loading yosemite can't get permissions from any network PC - OK from MACs on network...any advice?

after loading yosemite can't get permissions from any network PC - OK from MACs on network...any advice?

would love to...way over my head so far...upgraded to Yosemite 10.10.2 - I have another MAC (motorola chipset...maybe 10.6?) and 3 PCs on the network...the older MAC linked up through the network just fine...
I can see the Yosemite MAC on the PCs...I can open customer file folders (I am a printer) from the shared drive...I can drag files (let's just call them PDFs, they mostly are) to the MAC customer file...but if I try to open them from the PC I get an error message that says permission denied - or may be in use by another user. There are no other users. After I uploaded to Yosemite, I noticed most if not all drives and or folders had permissions changed to either no access or to read only...I've changed as many as I could find...drives, and folders...I can open those same files if I'm on the yosemite mac...Here's the catch, though...I was on a different floor and that PC can open a PDF on the Yosemite...but the RIP that prints our large format prints now won't print those files (whole RIP locks up) unless they are first dragged to the PC desktop...then all is fine. I thought it was MAC upgrade oriented, but I do have a PC that halfway works...I'm really stymied...

  • File orientation on the designjet 800ps, using mac os x and photoshop

    Hi everyone
We're having a problem with the orientation of the printout we're getting from a designjet 800PS...... The printer is working fine (except for some slight banding), but we are trying to work out the orientation first.
Essentially when we are printing A1 sheets from the roll of paper it is printing the long side of the poster along the continuous side of the paper. This means that we then have to chop half of the width of paper off, which is a complete waste. What we want to be able to do is rotate the image being printed by 90 degrees so we can print the long side of the poster across the width of the roll, thus saving us paper and making our rolls last longer.
We are using mac os x leopard (which has the HP drivers for this printer still installed), and printing from photoshop. I assume there should be an option somewhere in the system printer settings when we print, but i cannot for the life of me find them.
    Cheers in advance.
    This question was solved.

    Need more info!!
Are you selecting landscape or portrait orientation in page set up and the paper/quality tab of the printer driver when you select print?  Both those settings much match.  Are you using the autorotate feature?  Have you read through your user guide?  Found here:
    http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/DocumentIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&contentType=Support...
Also, is this the 24 or 42 inch designjet?  What size paper?  Roll or Sheet?
Just so you know there are some quirks to getting portrait docs to print landscape - 2 fixes if you are doing everything correctly and it's still spinning your doc around:
1 - if you are printing to a roll that is smaller than the max size, you can lie to the printer and tell it you have a larger size roll installed.
2 - reduce the overall size of the original document by 1/2 inch.
There is an issue where when we use autorotate and then chose to print a portrait doc landscape, the spooling software actually makes the document 1 pixel too wide so the printer automatically turns the document back around.  However let's make sure you are setting things up correctly first.

  • Set Report Orientation VI Broken on Mac

I am making a cross platform VI in Labview 7.0. It uses the Set Report Orientation.vi to make the page landscape. The VI works fine on the PC. On the Mac there is a corresponding Set Report Orientation.vi, that does nothing, however the VI comes up with errors (Wire has loose ends) When I try to edit the block diagram to fix it, it asks for a password. Where will I find this password?

    Hi Kirk,
This is a known issue with the Set Report Orientation.vi on the Mac. According to notes written by R&D, the VI was not supposed to be included on the palette. The reasons were not indicated, but I have contacted the engineer regarding this issue and will try to get more information for you.
Thanks again for contacting National Instruments and have a great day!

  • Changing the orientation on Mac Lion

I have a Mac with OS X 10.8.5. It prints and scans alright. However, when I select landscape for orientation, it still prints in portrait. Is there something I need to do to get it to print in landscape?

    Hi there @jaxbb ,
I read about how you are trying to print in landscape however, the prints are coming out in portrait. Here are my own suggestions for you!
OS X Mavericks: Change the page orientation for printing
If that did not help, try:
Mac OS X: How to reset the printing system
    Repair disk permissions
    Restart the Mac
Re-add the printer and try changing the orientation again
    I hope that works!

  • Over the past week the Mac mail app on my iPad 2 has become locked in vertical orientation and only in the orientation such that the bottom is orientated toward the menu button. Any advice? This is the only app that seems to have been affected.

For the past week or two, my Mac Mail app for my iPad 2 has been stuck in vertical orientation. This is the only app that is similarly affected. Moreover, it will only orient itself such that the bottom is toward the menu button on the iPad.  Please advise if you have a solution.

Try closing the Mail app via the taskbar and see if it rotates when you re-open the app : from the home screen (i.e. not with the Mail app 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Mail app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
If that doesn't work also do a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • Mac only prints landscape, won't change orientation

My Mac book pro will not print correctly to my two  HP Printers, 8600 and 4630.  Seems to want to print in landscape only, and if by chance I can get it to print in Portrait, it leaves about a 3 inch margin and cuts off bottom as if it is still confused and thinks its portrait.  I have been with both Apple support and HP support and they are baffled. They even remotely saw for themselves what was happening.  How frustrating!  If I want something to print correctly I have to print from IPad or Iphone and that works perfectly!  I really want a solution so that I can print from my computer.

    Welcome to the forums winningchanges,
I saw your post about the printing issues you have been experiencing with both of your Officejet 8600 and 4630 models from your Mac computer.
First of all, test the actual printer hardware by making a copy from each unit. If the copies work successfully, the printers test out fine and the issue would be software related.
If the copies are successful we can move on to troubleshooting the Mac.
Please let me know which Mac OS X you're running and also how your printers are connected to your computer. (Ethernet, wireless or USB).
Mac OS X: How Do I Find Which Mac OS X Version Is on My Computer?
Please print from more than one program on your computer and let me know if the printing issue happens if you print from anyone, or is more related to one certain program.

  • Oject Oriented Database management system for mac (OODMS)

Is anyone interested to develop an OODMS for the Mac ?
There exits allready a good project that is in production (terabytes !) but it lacks a gui
This system is called EYEDB and is open source and written in c++
    http://www.eyedb.org/
This system would in conjunction with QT4 offer a good user interface gui a la ms access.
http://qt.nokia.com/products (The open source version) also written in c++
Apple users need definitively such a modern database system !
    Gerard

Having worked quite a lot with pure object databases for Java, I can see where you are coming from. I generally try and avoid having to deal with an RDBMS (and its associated lack of speed and unnatural programming model) whenever I can.
Thanks for pointing out eyedb. I was not aware about it. A brief look identified one aspect which I do not like - having to define a schema outside of the object model. Most Java ODBMS systems do not require any separate schema to be associated. That is automatically performed by the DBMS when you try and persist objects.

  • Need to find professional income tax preparation software, capable of handling 1065, 1120, 1041, 990, etc. preferably PPR compatible with Mac's OS

Need to find pro tax prep software compatible w/Macs. My software maker, Drake, does not have Mac version. I've checked Pro-Series (no) and maybe 1 other. I don't want to spend Lacert kind of $$ (neither do the majority of longtime Lacert users apparently). Obviously, no Turbo Tax, Tax Cut or any other commercial, deduction & crdit missing commercial software. They would ned to have the ability to 1) convert a few years of Drake to their program, 2) Covert files created on PC to files that 10 OS could use. Also, would like them to have reasonable PPR program, free efile, free unlimited states, capable of 1040, 1065, 1120, & (S), 1041, 990. Built in tax knowledge base. I'd be eternally indebted to you if you found sometghing as intuitive and value oriented as Drake but for OS 10. BEGINNING TO THINK APPLE bends over backwords for artistic tools but not so much business tools. Too bad, I've had a few tax returns that have bordered on art.
I will likely need to add Parallels & Windows 7 OS, preferably 64-bit to this Macbook Air. If so, I do not think I have sufficient memory or storage so would like to download & install onto NFTS (sp?) formatted 1TB HD. I do not know if hard drives, USB hubs, Optical drives etc. that work w/ Windows (as long as you choose correctly btwn SATA & IDE) will work on MacBook Air. Help greatly appreciated. So if you happen to know any pro tax prep software ompatible w/ OS 10 and/or, you could give me some info on what characteristics peripherals would need to have to use on MacBook (I'm hoping that most are inrterchanheable but my hoping ain't gonna make it so. OR if you know any great deals on Parallel-I saw some promos but not from reliable places. If I could find on Bradsdeals or Coupon Cabin I'd feel safe. I've seen  an Apple ad for a bundle of software w/ some other decent parts (Snagit) . I'd love to find a promo that applies to the bundle and download all 9programs for $9.99 (right). Too many questions, sorry for any protocol violations.  As you might have noticed, a keyboard is high on my agenda- I hate laptop keyboards though Apple's seems better than most. I also hate using scroll pads. Much rather have mouse. Real challenge is to find Bluetooth OS 10 keybrd that has numeric keypad. I wonder if the financial dept. @ apple uses keyboards w/ no numeric keypad, saw one that started at $99. I spent all the $$ I have on a MacBook, none leftover for overpriced peripherals, esp. w/ 2 kidfs going off to college in Sept.
Thanks for allowing me to whine & ramble. Feel free to call me on any breach of protocol as I am 1st time poster.
Thanks for your time and consideration, I HOPE I'M CORRECT IN MY GUT FEELING THAT I've joined the forces for good by switching. Too many PCs ruined by malware.
    Bill S

Bill I've also run into a very similar problem, I own many Macs but I've had a PC for Tax Stuff. My PC broke and I refused to buy another one so I began to search for an alternative. Window's Emulators have given me so much trouble with my Tax Software.
However, I've since found out that Intuit has a cloud based tax solution that works with a MAC because it's all done online. Which means you'll need a reliable internet connection whenever you want to prepare a client's return.
    It's suppose to support all of the major returns (1040, 1041, 1065, 1120, 1120S and 990)
I've yet to use this solution, but it's the best thing that I've been able to find so far. This is what I'll be using this upcoming Tax Season.
So I figured that it would be worth mentioning. Good Luck!

  • XMP doesn't display proper info in Photoshop CS2 for Mac.

    Dear List members:
I have just recently installed Creative Suite CS2 and begun to explore the functionality of XMP. After purchasing Bruce Fraser's book on Camera Raw for CS2, I downloaded Metalab (Pound Hill Software) and created my first custom XMP panel that can be seen under the file info in Photoshop when an image (digital photo) is open.
The problem is that I noticed a few odd things and began to question myself if there is some kind of bug or a problem with my installation of CS2.
    1. The window that opens under the file info command has several categories of information on the left to be chosen from, in the following order:
    (1)Description, (2)Camera Data 1, (3)Camera Data 2, (4)Categories, (5)History, (6)IPTC Contact, (7)IPTC Content, (8)IPTC Image, (9)IPTC Status, (10)Adobe Stock Photos, (11)Origin, (12)Advanced
The Camera Data 1 option when selected opens a panel in the file info window that seems to contain all the information it is supposed to contain. The Camera Data 2 panel, on the other hand, doesn't display any information at all. Although the fields are there, they are empty. The fields are:
    (1)Pixel Dimension X and Y, (2)Orientation, (3)Resolution X and Y, (4)Resolution Unit, (5)Compressed Bits per Pixel, (6)Color Space, (7)Light Source, (8)File Source.
All these fields are empty but when looking at the same file under Bridge the information is there, displayed under the metadata menu.
This is something I noticed "before" installing Metalab so I know it is not a compatibility issue generated by the installation of the software.
After installing CS2 I noticed that CS1 remained installed in my system. The version I purchased of CS2 is the upgrade one. Since I have no use for CS1 as I am now totally converted to CS2, I would like to uninstall CS1. The following are some of the questions I have:
    1. How can I uninstall CS1 without causing any problems to my installation of CS1 ? Is there an uninstall utility with the software or will I have to uninstall the entire package manually ?
    2. My G5 came with only one internal 160 GB drive where I originally installed CS1. I then purchased another internal 400 GB HD and copied the original drive onto it. This week I am going to replace the original 160 GB drive with a second 400 GB drive so that I can do regular "mirror image" back-ups between the two drives. Shold I expect any problems as I remove the drive where I originally installed CS1 ? Since I used disk utility to "copy" the 160 GB drive onto the 400 GB drive, my understanding it that any Adobe software key or authorization was also transferred to the drive. Is this right ? In case it hasn't, how can I transfer this information so that after I remove the 160 GB drive I will not experience any problems when trying to run CS2 ?
    3. How can I fix the problem with the Camera Data 2 panel under the file info window and command ? I noticed that the folder that is supposed to hold the Custom File Info Panels (HD>Library>Application Support>Adobe>XMP>Custom File Info Panels) has files for CS1 and CS2. Could this be a problem ? There many more files with .dat extenson than there are with the .txt extension. Bruce Fraser specifically says that the ones with the .txt extension are the ones that hold the XMP templates for information related to the image files. The files I have in this folder with the .txt are:
    (1)Camera1_CS2.txt , (2)Camera1.txt , (3)Camera2_CS2.txt , (4)Camera2.txt , (5)Categories.txt , (6)History.txt , (7)IPTC_Contact.txt , (8)IPTC_Content.txt , (9)IPTC_Image.txt , (10)IPTC_Status.txt , (11)StockPhotoInfo.txt
The only ones that have two separate files one each for CS1 ad CS2 are Camera 1 and Camera 2. Camera 2 seems to be the only that is now non-functional. What should I expect to happen if I were to manually uninstall the ones that relate to CS1 ? Could that cause any problems ?
My apologies for the long post but I didn't really know how to make it shorter.

The Photoshop and/or Bridge forums would be more likely places to get answers to your questions. This forum is inhabited more by programmer types interested in implementing the XMP specification in applications we write.
I'd expect CS2 to ignore CS1 panels so I doubt that's the issue. Panels don't interfere with each other--they just offer different views of the data. In any case, move the extra panels to your desktop and see what happens.
As far as I know, all you need to do on the Mac is drag the CS1 application folder to the trash to uninstall it.

  • Using 2 Identical SuperDrives with DVDSP in Mac Pro

    Hello-
I recently installed 2 new identical Pioneer 118 Superdrives in my 2006 Mac Pro. In DVDSP, I'm having problems selecting a drive and burning discs. The Burn dialog box allows me to select either drive, but both have identical names. When the top one in the list is selected, sometimes the bottom tray will open; when I try to burn a disc there, it takes a long time for the burn to begin, and sometimes it will hang before finishing. I'm not sure if the Mac is having a tough time figuring out which drive is which because of the identical names.
I have both drives installed correctly, with Cable Select chosen on both. I wonder if there is way, anywhere, to rename the drives, or if this is the problem. The drives both read any kind of disc without problems, and I have burned discs on both, so they do work. I can also create disc images, which I can then burn in disc utility.
It just seems like DVDSP gets confused because the drives are identical. Should I get a different model or brand of drive to replace one, or is there another way to straighten this out?
Thanks in advance for any help anyone can provide.

Thanks for the response; I've been trying a few things today, and they seem to be working now. Both drives show up in DVDSP with identical names; when I select the upper name, the lower tray opens, and I can burn the disc. Selecting the lower name results in the upper tray opening, and again I can successfully burn.
In Toast, both names also appear and I can burn to both drives (haven't tried two discs at once, yet), although the names/trays are correctly oriented in Toast.
What I do notice is that these drives (New Pioneer 118s) take an extra minute or so before burning begins (in DVDSP only, so again, this might be a name recognition issue), and are noisier while burning.
I wonder if switching to the master/slave setup would improve anything.

  • Upgrading 1.8 MHz Power Mac G5 (memory and OS)

I recently purchased an iMac loaded with Leopard. I would like to use the install disk to upgrade my older Power Mac G5. My machine is running 10.3.9 currently.
I know I need to increase memory, but by how much? A salesman sold me additional memory some time ago, but it caused a lot of problems and I removed it. Now I'm leery of what to buy. Will the following memory description be appropriate, both in type and quantity to run Leopard?
1GB PC3200 DDR 400MHz Module For PowerMac G5 Models(requires pairs!), iMac G5, Mac mini 1.25GHz/1.42GHz Models. TRUE PC3200 CAS 3.0(or Faster) Non-Stacked 64x8 device Low-Noise PCB Solution! New, Lifetime Advance Replacement Warranty. (OWC3200DDR1024)
My Power Mac's memory currently consists of 2-128MB DDR SDRAM PC3200U-30330.
I'm application-oriented and not too technically savvy.

The G5s came stock with 256MB 6 yrs ago but even then it was sub-standard amount and 1.2 - 1.5GB RAM was much better for even basic light use.
2GB should be a good improvement, you have 4 DIMM slots likely. But it depends on what you plan to do or use it for. Buy from vendors that sell and cater to Mac hardware.
OEM DVDs like from an iMac can't be used, they don't load sometimes, and you really do need retail discs. Good luck finding 10.5.x DVD retail.
New drives can also do a lot to improve performance.
Realize though, other than running older PowerPC applications, the iMac should be able to do most things very well.
