Mac requirements for Photoshop/Illustrator

This probably gets asked Ad Nauseum, but we're PC users who now need a new computer and have decided to go to a Mac, with the principle purpose of working with Web Premium CS5, in particular Photoshop and Illustrator.
We want something robust enough to work with these programs at a better than minimum performance level, especially with 3D rendering involved.
So my question is if the following specs for the New iMac at $1699 CAD will be sufficient. My concern might be the 512MB for the Graphics controller ... and how much better is 3.1 Ghz for the Processor ?
27-inch: 2.7GHz
2.7GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5
2560 x 1440 resolution
4GB (two 2GB) memory
1TB hard drive1
AMD Radeon HD 6770M with 512MB
Thanks!

3.1 is what, 10% faster than 2.7?  It's pretty much that straight up when looking at the same processor, isn't it?
Illustrator, up to CS5 anyway, could care less about your graphics card.  CS6 is rumored to be 64 bit and as such might also have been written to take advantage of modern things like graphics cards.
RAM - Up to CS5, about 2gb was all Illustrator could use itself so beyond that, you're only helping multitasking, (which is important to a degree).  Pshop will take whatever you give it.  Not sure about inDesign and the others.  I think ID uses more, but I'm not sure.  CS6 though, if it is 64bit, will use all you give it (which will be awesome)
Blah, blah, realworld:  I work at home now, on my 23" iMac 3.06 with 6gigs of ram, and it is perfectly fine 90% of the time.  The other 10%, when I'm working with bigger files in Illus., (like packaging for a pair of stilts the other day) it can get a little slow, but I don't think it's much slower than the monster Mac Pro I had when I was working in the office.  My feeling is that with CS6 that might make a bigger difference, but CS5 and below are crippled more by the software than any hardware you can throw at them these days.

Thanks for your reply. I was able to find help through a tech support chat session and the person helped me edit my /etc/hosts file and it solved the problem.
For anyone else experiencing this issue (Mac OS X):
Close all other programs and sign out from the Adobe Desktop App
From the Finder, Go > Go to Folder...
    Type /etc and hit enter
Find "hosts" file (only "hosts", there were similar files such as hosts.config but only open the one that says "hosts"
Open the file, and replace the entire content with ### Host Database## localhost is used to configure the loopback interface#
Close the file, sign back into the Adobe Desktop App
    Problem solved!

  • MAC Requirements for iCLOUD

Among the different requirements that allow a MAC to be found in case of lost, is:
“The Mac system must have a local OS X Recovery partition.”
Can you please tell me why?
    Thank you

Your Mac does not need a recorvery partition in order to be found via "Find My Mac"? The recovery partition is just for re-installing OS X. By the way here a the Mac requirements for iCloud: https://support.apple.com/kb/HT4759

  • Mac Mini for professional illustration - sensible choice?

I need to upgrade my 1.25 GHz powerbook as it is becoming too slow for carrying out my digital illustration work.
I'm considering the new 2.0 Ghz Intel Mac Mini + 23" Cinema Display for the following reasons:
    1. The Mac Pro is just too expensive once you factor in a monitor, and is way too powerful for using Illustrator and a tiny bit of Photoshop.
    2. The new 24" Imac would be perfect but the two that I've tried I had to send back as they both had a left side of the screen significantly brighter than the other, rendering them useless for illustration work. The Apple Store told me they were supposed to be like this - their display model had exactly same problem so I'm inclined to believe him.
So the only option I'm left with is the Mac Mini. Will this be powerful enough to run Illustrator and Photoshop CS3, and perhaps Itunes also? I'm hoping to run a web browser, email etc. separately from my old G4 Powermac.
Will it be a significant improvement in performance over my 1.25 Ghz Powerbook (1GB Ram - only one working memory slot so no room for additional memory)?
Any advice much appreciated - Many thanks!

    Last question first:
Will it be a significant improvement in performance over my 1.25 Ghz Powerbook (1GB Ram - only one working memory slot so no room for additional memory)?
Yes. Bearing in mind that the mini is roughly on a par with the G5 DP systems which outperformed the G4 powermacs of similar specification to your PB by a significant margin, the mini could hardly fail to give you a significant boost in performance, and particularly if you were to toss in a couple of 1Gb RAM modules instead of the two 512Mb sticks supplied by default.
However, there is one caveat, and that is that to really benefit from the improved performance capabilities of the system, it would be essential to run Intel-native software, not versions of applications written for the PPC processor you have in the PB. That is clearly not an issue in terms of any of the software Apple supply with the mini, but you need to check that any other software you want to install is also Intel native, because if it is not, it'll run under Rosetta which will slow the mini down significantly - so much that you would not notice much real difference between it and the PB.
So the only option I'm left with is the Mac Mini. Will this be powerful enough to run Illustrator and Photoshop CS3, and perhaps Itunes also? I'm hoping to run a web browser, email etc. separately from my old G4 Powermac.
The mini certainly has the power to run this kind of software - plenty of it.
There are some broad thoughts however: Firstly that as powerful as the mini is, it is not really designed for this sort of use (meaning professional level work) and it lacks a few things professionals often need, such as expandability, choice of video cards, ability to drive multiple displays at high resolutions etc. If those options are not important to you, then the diminutive size and the 'sealed' nature of the system should not put you off, because as much as the mini has limitations (relatively slow hard drive for example), they are broadly the same as those that applied to your powerbook, which has not hindered you in your work.
If I were in your situation I'd probably look at a 20" iMac as a preferred option, with an additional LCD display and mini-DVI adapter for greater flexibility when working, faster hard drive, better graphics and somewhat better all-round performance. Admittedly there are reports of graduated brightness on these systems, though I would refute any claim by an Apple store staffer that this was 'normal' or to be expected, because clearly it should not be. One might suppose the comment resulted from the desire to sell product and the fact the display model exhibited the same characteristic, but with a decent external digital panel set as the primary workspace, that would overcome the problem even if you were to experience it. It might be that you could source an external display from Dell or similar manufacturer at sufficiently lower cost than the 23" Apple display that it would make a base iMac with external LCD little more expensive.
Personally, that's the option I would go for if funds permit, simply because it helps to maximise options and future-proof your investment a little better than a mini. On the other hand if you have a need to keep the expenditure down, the mini is an excellent system of great potential as long as its hardware doesn't restrict your options.

  • Help configuring Mac Pro for Photoshop CS3

Hi all, this will be my 1st Mac and I'm hoping to get the proper configuration for using the Mac Pro with Photoshop CS3.
Since I'm working with large photos (20" X 24" and even larger) and layers my main concern is speed. The Apple store lists five items in their suggested configuration, any suggestions for what upgrades I need to make will be greatly appreciated!
Start building your Mac Pro with our suggested configuration:
    * Two 2.66GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon “Woodcrest” processors
    * 1GB memory (667MHz DDR2 fully-buffered DIMM ECC)
    * NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT graphics with 256MB memory
    * 250GB Serial ATA 3Gb/s 7200-rpm hard drive1
    * 16x double-layer SuperDrive
    thanks!!

Well, with a $US5K budget you should be able get a decent configuration. From the Apple Store I would order…
    Mac Pro 2.66GHz 1GB RAM / 250GB HD
    ATi Radeon X1900 XT
    Apple 23" Cinema Display
    Bluetooth & Airport Extreme
… which will cost $US3,726 leaving you plenty for your RAM and drives. I would add AppleCare although you can buy and activate this any time within your standard 1 year warranty period so by buy later you spread your costs.
Now, with RAM I would either buy 4 x 1GB (giving you 5GB and costing approx. $US400) from the manufacturer of your choice else 4 x 2GB (giving you 9GB and costing approx. $US850). The most cost effective is probably the 4 x 1GB as you'll most likely not want more than 8GB RAM in any case.
For your drives you have quite a bit of choice although you need to decide if you want to go RAID and what you're going to do with your backup and/or clone. Photoshop users require fast, small file, disk access which the Maxtor MaxLine Pro excels at and at $US99 each they're quite the bargain. Even though Seagate has chosen to discontinue this drive they're still the best boot/Photoshop drives in the 500GB size.
However, looking larger (750GB or more) such as the Hitachi Deskstar/UltraStar, Western Digital SE16/RE2 or Seagate Barracuda 7200.11/ES.2 You'll find better performance overall simply through their larger sizes. Not to mention you'll be buying current model drives. Be aware that you should buy drives specifically for RAID use if you wish to go that way. It's not a good idea to use desktop class drives in RAID sets hence the two model choices for each manufacturer.

  • What are the system requirements for photoshop?

I am trying to download a trial on a Mac and when i go to to download it, i get this message "You are running an operating system that Photoshop no longer supports. Refer to the system requirements for a full list of supported platforms."

I dont care what version it is
If you use an obsolete OS version then it seems you have to care.
I just want a free trial
The 30-day-trial for Photoshop is free no matter the version (at least for the last couple of versions), as far as I know.

    Hi!
Can we try to uninstal the Adobe Application manager and then try to reactivate the applcation using Adobe id and Password..
Ideally Subscriptions should never require a serial number.
First uninstall the Adobe Application manager from your computer.
and then redownload the Adobe Application manager from the follwing links
    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4773- For Windows

  • System requirements for Adobe Illustrator CS3?

    Hello!
I have iMac and would like to install Adobe Illustrator CS3.(I've never installed any other adobe illustrator versions before.)
    Mac OS x Version 10.4.11
    1.83 GHz Intel Core Duo
    512 MB 667 MHz RAM
Hard disk space available: 131.93 GB
    Resolution: 1440x900
    32-bit color
Will my iMac be able to handle Illustrator CS3 once I install the program?
    Thank you for your time!

There are no single core Intel iMacs. The OP has a Intel Core Duo (Yonah) processor which is still dual core but just 32bit rather than the 64bit Core 2 Duos used in subsequent Macs.
The system requirements only call for a G4 and 512MB RAM. Although I would agree that upgrading to 2GB would be sensible:

  • New Mac Pro for Photoshop

    Hi,
I currently have a 2008 Mac Pro 2 x 2.8 Quad Core Intel Xeon that I am thinking of upgrading.
    My questions are as follows.
Which set up would be best for photography based work, mainly Photoshops CS6 and Lightroom 4
I use a Drobo as my main working raid style hard drive.
I'm happy to spend money on a quality system but want to know it will be optimum for what I am using and dont want to just go for the 'top of the range' if it is pointless for the type of work I am doing (I never use video software at all)
Would there be a 3rd party company that would be better suited to set it up exactly for photography based work.
Am I right in saying the current Mac Pro's do not have thunderbolt or USB 3.0, so with that in mind, how long do people speculate that the new Mac Pro's will be available.
    Thanks in advance.
    Jason

YOU can see what Intel says (said?) at the Intel Conference this fall where they lay out for their vendors and everyonne what they plan and have in the oven for the next year.
Intel fell behind last year's plans with the complexity and issues they ran into, plus changes in the landscape. So did Nvidia with their new line. Hence everyone's plans went bonkers. And any IvyBridge Xeon? doesn't look like anything until this time next year, end of 2013. 2014 does have the next tic-toc and improved chips and memory architecture. DDR4 may get out of the labs.
    That much is knowable.
But what you can do today: 2010 6-core 3.33 w/ 4x8GB and GTX 670 plus some nice storage hardware.
See this guy's articles and advice, a heavy graphics perspective:
    www.macperformanceguide.com
Oh, and just my own personal.... a lot of 2008 owners are not happy campers for various reasons with power, stabilty, sleep/wake/freezes and maybe that 'first Mac Pro w/ EFI64" is showing crack in seams.
2010 for $1800 and up to around $3k - and your system is worth over a grand still once you can move over.

  • Intel Mac Mini and Photoshop / Illustrator CS2

What is the performance of CS2 PS & Ill like on the Dual Mini like.
I currently have a PB 1.33GHZ / 768 MB RAM and thinking about getting DC Mac Mini with 2GB RAM.
    Any reports?
    Powerbook 12 1.33GHZ   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   768 RAM

If you go to the Adobe site, you can read one of their white papers on their plans for universal versions. In short, there will NOT be a release of Photoshop CS2 as a universal binary; they're waiting for the next release (CS3?) which they hinted at 12-18 months. They also said that you will get performance degradation of Photoshop on the Intel boxes.
so, if a software vendor tells you that in writing, you can bet it will be worse than you expected, not better.
As for me, I'll keep my dual G5 PowerPC and CS2 until Adobe sees the urgency to release a universal product.
