Mac reverts default programs constanly

Hi,
I have recently updated to Mac OSx 10.5.2. Everything appeared to go smooth. However now I encountered 2 problems. Every time my mac startup all my file associations are reverted back to standard. Firefox will ask me if I want to use it as default programs, .dmg file want to open with Hex edit. I change everything back system wide but as soon as I restart everything is standard again.
Also my mac was slowly rebuilding it's desktop every time it booted. This went away after I ran repair disk authorization in the disk utility tool. I hopes this would also solve my other problem but it did not.
Please advise,
Thank you,
Daniel

OK so here is what I figured out.  Don't know why it works this way, but I stumbled on it.
If the file was not open in any program, and I tried changing the default program to open it, it would not let me change the file type to open with.
But what I noticed is if I had the file open with the program that I wanted to use as the default, then magically, it would let me change the default program, in this case, to Open Office.  I don't know why it behaves this way, I can just tell you it does.  So after opening the program in Open Office, I was able to select Open Office as the default program, and then checked the "All" button to open all programs of this extension with OO as the default program.  It worked like a charm.
I don't konw if this is unique behavior in the latest version of IOS (10.8), but it works just in case others are running into this issue.
Thanks for the responses.

    I say to highlight more than one if you can because if the PDF you highlight was made by using Acrobat, it will change all PDF's made by Acrobat but if you have one made by some other product, it may not change them to open with Acrobat.
    So in other words, at some point you may have to do it to a PDF made by some other product.

  • Default programs revert back

    OK. This is starting to get my annoyed. Real bad. I can't set any default programs that I wish to open using the software of my wish. I tried Command+I and Right Click Open with, Clicked always open with. But as soon as I restart my computer it's all back to square 1. Some files will open with the programs I want (ex: Preview) while others with whatever else there is (ex: Acrobat).
    Can anyone please help me solve this issue for me?
    Regards,

    Try rebuilding your Launch Services Database:
    Paste in this terminal command and then restart:
    /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServices.fram ework/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user

    You are posting in the "icloud on my mac" forum, but your profile mentions Windows.  If using a mac, you need to have iphoto or aperture installed in order to receive new photos via photo stream.  If using windows, try posting in the iCloud on a PC forum.  You'll get better help there.

  • Windows 8.1 (running in VMware Fusion 6) keeps resetting my default program associations after rebooting

    I tried to set Google Chrome as my default browser in Windows 8.1 (virtual machine running in VMware Fusion 6) but somehow mysteriously failed over and over again.
    According to Control Panel\Programs\Default Programs\Set Default Programs\Set Program Associations, there are 19 possible associations for Google Chrome:
    Extensions: .htm, .html, .shtml, .webp, .xht, .xhtml;
    Protocols: FTP, HTTP, HTTPS, IRC, MAILTO, MMS, NEWS, NNTP, SMS, SMS, SMSTO, TEL, URN, WEBCAL
    I have no problem selecting some of them, or "set this program as default" so that "this program has all its defaults." (I am the only admin user, but not the builtin admin account.)
    However, after restarting the VM, the program associations for Google Chrome will reset on its own. Specifically,
    "this program has all its defaults" becomes "this program has 14 out of 19 defaults", losing the following five crucial protocols:
    FTP, HTTP, HTTPS, MAILTO, NEWS
    And these protocols simply hang there unassociated—they don't belong to IE either.
    So I am extremely confused; how could the system reset my default program associations? What's wrong?
    In case it is relevant, I will also post my VMware Fusion VM Default Applications settings here. All of the options are unchecked: "Open your Mac files and links using Windows applications"; "Open your Windows files and links using Mac applications";
    "Run Windows applications from your Mac's Applications folder."
    Thank you for your time.

    Hi,
    I have the same issue, and I've posted on the vmware forums with no responses other than another person having the same issue.
    Have you been able to fix this? I tried importing the same VM into Parallels and the problem goes away. If I do a manual uninstall of Fusion (and remove VMWare tools from the VM), and then reinstall both, the problem goes away - temporarily. I had a few
    good months, and it started again. Followed the procedure mentioned, and it went away again, but only survived a few reboots.
    FYI, it's definitely not an issue with Chrome, as I'm having the same issue with Firefox (although I can duplicate on chrome as well).
    Have you figured anything out?
    Thanks!

  • How do I make Pages the default program?

    Hi,
    This may be quite basic, but I can't seem figure it out.
    I've just migrated from a PC to a Mac and I have a lot of .doc's. I want to make Pages the default program to open all of my MS Word documents; however, when I select >open with>other>iWork08>Pages, and check the "Always open with" option, it only opens that particular document with Pages, not every .doc file on my computer.
    Windows has an "always use for this type of file" option, but I can't find any such thing on my Mac. I have WriteRoom installed and this is somehow the (default) for .doc's, though, I didn't make it that way... just happens to show up first on the list for some reason.
    Thanks!

    Point to a .doc file in a window using the Finder. Command-i (or right click, then choose "get info") on any .doc file. Under "Open with" specify Pages then click "change all". This will make all .doc files open with Pages by default.
    If you don't like this setting, you can change it back. And bear in mind that opening a .doc file with Pages does not allow you to simply save the file using Pages. You have to save a second file in Pages format (and perhaps may wish to then delete the first .doc file). The fact that Pages doesn't save Word documents "natively" like this can be a pain, but there's no way around it because that's how Pages is designed.

  • Default Program

    How do you change the default program used to open, say a .doc file?

    Hi, b.
    See also "Mac OS X 10.4 Help: Changing the application that opens a document."
    Note that if documents start opening in the wrong application, this can indicate a Launch Services problem. See my "Multiple applications quit unexpectedly or fail to launch" FAQ for advice on troubleshooting that issue.
    Good luck!

  • How to link email to default program

    I would like to link mailto links to my gmail account. However, in tools/options/applications, there is no content for email. How would I add this so I can set the default program? Thanks.

    This sounds right.
    What type of file should it be?
    I know it cannot be an html or css file.
    Thanks!
    You can use css in an e-shot it has to be what is called inline css (see below example of inline css on the <td></td> tag
    <table width="600" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0">
    <tr>
    <td style="color: #000; background-color:#CC0; font-family: arial, verdana, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;">Some text</td>
    </tr>
    </table>
    The previous poster is correct, use a table construction and set the width to 600px.
    All image links must be absolute and stored on the remote server:
    <img src="http://www.YourDomainName.com/eShotImages/imageName.jpg" width="200" height="100" alt="">
    What I do is build everything in Dreamweaver just as a normal page BUT use inline css styling.
    I think you can use Internet Explorer to send the final html to your clients (Google sending html emails using Internet Explorer) or you can Google for software that can do it for you.
    Because I'm on a Mac and it's harder to send html emails without jumping through hoops to set up a brower I usethe following:

  • Cannot change the default program to open a specific file type.

    Whenever I attempt to change the default program to open a file, it automatically reverts to whatever was selected previously.
    I work with a lot of .ai files and my default Illustrator version is set to Creative Cloud. CC crashes constatnly on my machine, however CS6 runs smooth as silk. I'd like to be able to double click an .ai file and have it open in CS6, not CC. When I right click > Get Info > Open with and change it, it reverts as soon as I click "Change all..."
    This isn't a huge deal... only takes a few seconds out of my day but it isn't something I should have to worry about.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance.

    I just successfully changed on my .docx to open into Pages. I went the same route that you mentioned... Right click---> Get Info---> Open With and changed it to Pages. When I clicked Change All, a dialog came up asking me if I am sure that I want to change all of my .docx to open in Pages. I click accept and tested it. Now my .docx open in Pages.
    So my question is, is your issue just applying to .ai files? Or is affecting other files, such as .docx? If it's just affecting .ai files, then there maybe an underlying reason for that. And it may not be able to be changed.
    Just a thought.

    I have recently acquired an update for my mac OX the program being the snow leopard, i have been forever inserting the disk only to have it ejected by my mac, hence, i am unable to update my system with snow leopard, what can i do, as i have just paid out money for something which

    Worked like a charm and resolved my problem totally. The only issue I had is that, unlike the Computer (Mac OS). the iPad doesn't give constant visibility to what it is doing (feedback), so I wasn't initially sure it had done anything.
    When I opened my emailed message with .vcf file attached, and tapped the .vcf attachment icon, I saw activity on the icon for just a few seconds, then it reverted to the original with nothing apparently happening. After about 30 seconds, the secondary menut popped up indicating the transfer of 1200 addresses would be completed, if I approved the action. Another 10 to 15 seconds then transpired before the completed Contact list appeared on the ipad. So you must be patient, if you have a large Addressbook. That's reasonable,but unexpected lack of feedback left me wondering, like so many other things on the iPad.
    THank you for the assist. Apparently Apples Mac Genius people did not know this procedure, and I will pass it on to my local Apple Store Instructor.

  • Undoing Open Office being the default program for text and other files

    After problems with Power Point crashing down, I downloaded Open Office to save some files on my mac. thanks to Open Office I managed to save the content, but now Open Office seems to become default program to open word, ppt etc. files on my mac. How can I undo this?

    Change it from the Open With section of a document's Get Info window, and then use the Change All function.

  • Problem with default program to open certain files.

    My MacBook came with a trial version of Microsoft Office built in. Having already purchased a full version, I uninstalled the trial and installed the full version. The problem I am having is that when I go to open a Word document, it tries to open it with the trial version of Word that is no longer there. I tried changing the default program in Finder but it keeps switching back, thus giving me errors every time I try to open a Word document. If you could help it would be greatly appreciated. If you need more information, let me know.

    Pre-wife is not a term I am familiar with but I guess I catch your meaning .
    It sounds like your Launch Services database may be corrupt. Try downloading a copy of Cocktail (shareware, but I think you can try it) and in the System pane, select Misc tab and click on the button to rebuild the Launch Services database. In rare cases, this database (which the Finder uses to maintain file associations) can get messed up.
