Mac running excrutiatingly slow
I have a 400 MgHz G4 running 10.3.9. It has 320 M SDRAM and a 9.55 GB hard drive with about 676 Mb of available space.
The Mac originally had OS 9 on it. A couple of years ago, I updated to OS X. I also have Classic installed to run numerous OS 9 applications that I still
own.
In the last year, I have had a problem where the Mac becomes very slow. It can sometimes take a couple of minutes for an application to boot up. Or, even doing something as as simple as switching between applications, clicking on a web link, or typing something in a document can cause the computer to slow down dramatically.
During the times it is running slow, I will get the turning wheel in place of my cursor, and I will hear constant disk access. While it is occurring, I just have to sit and wait before I can do anything on the computer. Sometimes I even hear the disk being accessed when nothing is being done on the computer.
The behavior isn't constant. It almost always happens at least once a day, but after a period of time, the behavior goes away and the computer acts normally.
I did at one time have Norton installed on the computer, but removed it after finding many posts about problems with Norton and OS X. I have since purchased Disk Warrior and run it. It did find some problems and fix them, but the slowness problem has not gone away.
I have wondered if the problem could be caused by one of three different things - a virus, spyware, or an indexing issue.
I have read in numerous places that OS X is not very suceptible to viruses, and when I did have Norton installed, the computer was updated with virus protection regularly, so this seems like an unlikely cause of the problem. My impression of spyware is also that it is mainly a PC issue and not a problem for a Mac.
So that leaves me with the indexing possibility. But if that is truly the problem, I have no idea what can be done to fix it.
Anyone have any ideas about what might be causing the problem and how to fix it?
Hi,
Did you try to repair permission with Disk Utility?
I know some good tools, maybe they could help with script maintenance.

You could read this too :

More memory could help too and a faster CPU. If you want more infos, ask me.
Get back on if it works... or not!

My 2009 iMac started running very slowly this past week. I have searched the forums and used EtreCheck to get rid of Genieo, but it seems to be getting slower. How is that even possible. Here is the data from EtreCheck.

2. Startup Items

Startup items are obsolete in OS X Yosemite
For the first one; Backup immediately all of your data on a second HD, the drive seems to be failing! Replace that HD, or take it to Apple to have it replaced.
For the second; Navigate to /Library/StartupItems and delete the content. Startup items are obsolete in Yosemite, it is written there!
Thirdly you seem to have a lot of things wanting to modify the system.

Why is my Mac running so slow?
I have a Mac book late 2010 and it has 4 gb of ram. I got mountain lion and now every thing is slow like Turning on takes 1:30 to get to the log on screen. Loging in takes 30 sec opening any programs takes 30+ secs. Do you know why this is the case? I have never cleaned up the computer besides emptying the trash. Is there other maintenance I need to be doing? Also I'm not sure if there is a defrag tool in osx? I'm assuming not? Can you guys help me figure out what is wrong?
AustinPlease list what you have done to diagnos this problem. You could have missed an item in the list.
The three top candidates:
1) not enough memory. Seems not to be the problem.
2) hd issues. Run disk utility -- verify disk & correct permissions
3) Some app is running away with processors.
Run activity monitor. Look for a process that is taking up lots of time.
be sure to
-- list all processes
-- click on cpu tab. with high to low
-- memory usage.

Mac running super slow ... what happened?
Got a 21.5 inch iMac desktop summer of 2010. I think it is the base model. All other info I can't get to on "about my mac" because my Mac is running like frozen molasses.
Anyway, last few days I thought the internet/Safari was running kind of slow. Pages would load, I'd get stuff done, but I just thought it was being glitchy. Then last night, my Mac would all out freeze. Rebooting took at least 5 minutes, and it doesn't matter what I try to use (chrome, firefox, safari), pages just won't load at all or freeze if I am able to make it to Google/Facebook/etc. Now the computer just sits at the blue screen part of the startup, and I had to just finally hard shutdown since I am not getting anywhere to even run a virus scan.
So, what happened? Anyone know how much this is going to cost me to take to the apple store to fix it? (past a year and I don't have apple care on this machine)Start with a PRAM Reset:
PRAM RESET
Zap the PRAM
Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
Release the keys.

Mac running very slow during and after downloads (even if they are just small docs)
Hi,
I'm getting very frustrated with my MacBook. Whenever I download something, no matter how small the file is, the MacBook really slows down to the point that it is impossible to work on.
Any ideas why or what I can do to fix it would be much appreciated please.
Thank you! Thanks very much for getting back to me, really kind of you. I'd never done a system check before - here are the results:
Problem description:
My MacBook keeps running extremely slowly, to the point of being impossible to use, whenever in the process of downloading files and afterwards - even if it is just a tiny doc. Very frustrating, any help would be great please. Thanks!

after a fresh install, Spotlight will need to reïndex the files on your internal disk — that happens each time a fresh installation takes place.
I see that you have OS X 10.9.2 installed. Are you planning on installing the 10.9.3 update?
Your installed version of Java is outdated — the most recent version can be downloaded from here. -
Why is my new Mac running so slow?
I have just purchased a new Mac desktop...and am loving it so far. However, after some photos were added to it off and external hard drive, it seems to be SO slow.
Aslo, I cannot open any PDF files anymore...I've installed Adobe Reader, but what comes up from the download is garbled.
If you can help, I'd be so grateful...I'm really new to Mac.
Thank you,
AllyHello & welcome Ally!
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
Any change?
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens. -

3Your MBP shows an uptime of 14 days: how does it behave after a reboot?
Virtual Memory information indicates that you're running a little low on RAM. -
My MAC runs very slow. Rainbow wheel every time i try to go somewhere. Im a complete MAC novice. Only really use it for iTunes and email. the odd document here and there. The odd spreadsheet. Was brought up on a PC. I would imagine my system is in mess. I think i downloaded that Mackeeper which i have just discovered was not a good idea. I found a thread about EtreCheck and it suggested i posted the report of my machine which i have done.I only have 2GB of space. Not sure how much i have left. My wife keeps putting photos on here like they are going out of fashion. Bought the machine in 2008 because everybody said you have a MAC. I've never really got to grips with it but at least it worked. Now it does not run very well at all. That spinning wheel is driving me mad. HELP please, never ever used a forum light this either so please go gentle on me. Cheers Paul

680 KB Page-outs1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can read it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

I have recently downloaded OSX Mountain Lion and my computer is running considerably slower? Anyone have any suggestions?
It will run slow for a few hours as the new install will index your entire hard disk(s), as well as do a complete Time Machine backup if you're using that. Click on the Spotlight icon on the top right of your screen. Is there a progress bar that says its indexing (and if you're using Time Machine, is the TM icon in the menubar spinning)? If so, just wait for those to complete and things should be back to normal.
Also be sure to run Software Update and manually update any 3rd party apps, many of which may not work correctly under Mountain Lion and could cause slowdowns.
Other common causes and solutions of slow running can be found here:
