Mac's name changed to "machinename" on its own

Hi all,
Ever since I got my Mac Pro at work it's been called njintelmacpro. The other day, out of the blue, it's called machinename. In the sharing system preference I get this:
Other Macintosh users can access your computer at afp://10.32.53.127/
and then a second later it changes to:
Other Macintosh users can access your computer at afp://machinename/
The name in the Sharing System Preference is njintelmacpro!!
From the same dialog:
Other computers on your local subnet can access your computer at njintelmacpro.local
When I do a "set" in Terminal I get this:
HOSTNAME=machinename
Now, how is it that the Sharing System Preference says njintelmacpro but the name of the machine is "machinename"? It's driving me nuts.
Is it getting the name from somewhere else? Thanks.

Not sure of this of course, but I think something is kicking out a process, then it come back with the default when it can't read/do whatever it is... logs may show something.
Might try logging out and back in to see if it changes... or create a new user for a test.
At this point I think you should get Applejack...
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, then when the prompt shows, type in...
applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.

  • InDesign CS5 (Mac OS 10.6) can not open its own file

I need guidance to open an artwork file that in one hour I have to send to the print shop. InDesign refuses to open its own file.
    Any clue? Adobe, please help.

Re: InDesign CS5 (Mac OS 10.6) can not open its own file
    Bob and Peter
Thank your for helping us out. It was really necessary to ask a coworker to open the file and export it in InDesign markup language.
Three hours later than expected, but it's done!
We are stuck here. I'm a Master Collection user of CS5, using only Dreamweaver, Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Bridge and Acrobat Pro. (I don't know why I bought the Master's). My coleague former Window user, got a Mac in May and downloaded the trial version of Design Studio Standard Collection of CS5.5. Before expiring, we purchased its license and filled it in the active trial version.
A couple of months ago we noticed that were missed Plug Ins on his version and contacted Adobe who instructed us to download the whole files again. We never did because it is a pain to get rid of the missing parts of a pre installed trial version etc.
I will ask Adobe to send a CD disk for his version.
    Regards,
    Junia

  • Macbook pro changes user picture on its own . Help please.

Does this mean I have some sort of malware?
Reccently my mac started changing my user photo on its own. Even more strangely the photos are only from photobooth.

You likely have a corrupt cache file someplace in OS X.
    12: OnyX cache cleaning
This routine cleans all possible corrupt caches, doesn't delete your data or programs.
Apple doesn't include a easy for the user, system wide cache cleaning process in OS X, something they need to consider implementing.
So we have to depend upon third party software to do this and the best, time tested and free one is OnyX
Sometimes a corrupted cache file can cause strange behavior, slow machine, Dock and fonts doesn't work, beachballs effect, something won't install, Safari acting up etc., just general strangeness that can't be explained. Web browsing slow when all the other machines are fast etc.,
Use the free OnyX matching your OS X version and run all the initial checks
Run all the maintenance and cleaning aspects (except don't delete the log files) and reboot at the end (must)
If any of the initial checks OnyX does gives a warning, then Stop and report, you have a serious drive or other issue.
This will give OS X a enema of sorts (won't delete file or programs) and let it rebuild all the cache and other files, including Spotlight.
You must be through running all the maintenance and cleaning aspects as this is a "catch all" method and any number of corrupted caches may be responsible for your issues. Don't worry, OS X will work fine (and likely faster again) after the caches are cleaned out and rebuilt from their original sources provided you REBOOT when finished using OnyX.
    http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/11582/onyx    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OnyX
    List of proven OnyX successes:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/18377471?ac_cid=sa123456#18377471
OnyX also has a Verify > Preferences
(plist) file checker, show the corrupt ones and write them down. So while your in OnyX cleaning your caches, check for corrupted plist files too for the next step below.

  • Mac Book Pro i7 - Logging off on its own, night time, power down sleep

    Hi Everyone,
I have had my Macbook pro for around 4 months now.
And I have had this problem from the beginning.
At night, often when I leave my machine, with software open and things active.
I come back in the morning to find my mac logged off and at the login screen.
Can anyone suggest what would be causing this?
    I have  MAC OSX 10.6.7
    8GB of DDR3 RAM
    2.8 GHZ Core i7 Processor
I have tried SMC resets and it doesnt seem to work.
Any ideas of why my mac book pro might be logging off on its own would be great!
    Thank you.

  • Itunes changes genre information on its own

Often I find that when I begin playing a song, iTunes will change (or have changed prior to launch) the information that I have already stored for that song. i.e., if I double click a song to play it, iTunes will change the genre to something else on its own, and then I have to go and change it again to what I wanted it to be. Is there a way to turn this off, or prevent it from happening? It's really causing me headaches.

I literally just noticed this. Played a song out of music and was like "***!" as I watched it immediately change the genre. Opened info and changed it back. Dbl-clicked to play it and watch it change AGAIN.
One artist, with 9 albums, all bought in iTMS. ALL exhibit the same behavior. Just bought their latest album VIA AMAZON, did everything I usually do after buying an album - select full album, open info and change everything to what my smart playlists expect. Closed. NONE of the songs change genre on play.
So, this issue only appears to be w/ songs purchased from the iTMS. I did seem to figure out how to stop this at least. Instead of changing the genre in the info dialog, change it FOR EACH INDIVIDUAL SONG in the music list by editing the genre cell for that song. ROYAL PITA but it seems to stick at least for now.
Since I usually buy an album, edit for smart playlists and then listen via playlists, I can only imagine HOW MANY OF MY SONGS I'VE GONE TO THE EFFORT TO TAG THAT HAVE BEEN CHANGED WITHOUT MY KNOWING. WHAT IS THIS!?!?! WINDOWS?!?!? IF YOU'RE GOING TO DO THAT, DON'T LET US WASTE OUR TIME EDITING FIELDS!!!!
So. Anyway. Hope that helps you out Bri Guy. I now have to track down all songs from the last 5 years apparently and manually fix each one by hand.
Needless to say I will NEVER buy any music from the iTMS again.

I am having issues with adjusting the duration of time for each still frame and transition in imovie 11.  Each time that I adjust these times, the application does not accept the change, and instead automatically enters its own time. Have you tried turning off automatic transitions ? Choose file - project properties and follow the dialogue box to change duration with a slider.  iMovie also doesn't allow a transition to be more than 50% duration of the clip its attached to. In other words if the clip is 4 seconds the transition cannot be more than 2 seconds and remember that relates to the first clip as the following clip (right side) is pulled back to overlay it.
Does this help.  Perhaps you already know this ?

  • System name changing seemingly on it's own

I have a peculiar problem. My Macbook Air's name seems to be changing on it's own. The name doesn't change in any configuration prompt, but when I open the terminal it ALWAYS takes on the name of another computer on the LAN, regardless of what LAN I join. To clarify, if I go to system preferences, my computer's name is exactly what I named it. If I open a terminal, I get this:
    anothercomputersname:~ myname$
I would rate my computer literacy as extremely high - I'm a CentOS geek, I program, I've been in the IT industry for a decade - but I'm at a loss for words on how this could happen or why this would happen. This is my first Apple product.
    Possibly useful information:
    1) I don't remember this happening before my first experience with LAN filesharing on a Mac. Maybe I messed up a setting there?
    2) I can reset the name via the terminal with the following command, if and only if I am not on a network: "sudo scutil --set ComputerName JanetReno" (would change it to JanetReno)
    3) This happens regardless of my LAN.
    4) I use a very secure password and remote SSH access to my machine is disabled. In other words, I don't think my system is comprimised, but I suppose it's always possible that someone outsmarted me.
    5) Using OS X 10.5.6
And finally, I tried googling this but unfortunately all of the relevant search terms are commonly Googled together and don't help my me find my answer.

Try this. Go to the Sharing preference panel. Click the "Edit" button. Deselect the "Use Dynamic Global Hostname" checkbox. Or if it is not select, enable it. That may fix it.

  • Data Source path in Pivot Table changes to absolute on its own

    Hello.
I have a .XLSX file, that was created long time ago (I don't even know in which Office version, but definitely not 2013), and maybe even was a .XLS file at first.
So it's a 4 MB file with 16 Sheets and 8 Pivot Tables.
All of the Pivot Tables use other sheets from the same file as Data Source.
Data Source for some of them look like this: 'Sheet3'!$A:$E
Everything is fine when I save the file, and open it from saved file.
But as soon as I try to move the file elsewhere, or rename it, or email it - all Data Source paths change to something like this: '\Users\Sergii_Litnevskyi\Desktop\New folder\[FileName.xlsx]Sheet3'!$A:$E
And it happens with all Pivot Tables. The problem is that it links to an old file path, where the file does not exist anymore. And it links to an external file, which is not what I want.
If I Save As and select different path and filename - then it works fine. So it's a workaround for renaming and moving files, but not for sending them to other persons.
I've read some threads, and people recommend disabling "Save external link values", but it does not help. It is already turned off in my office, but it keeps acting weird.
So what I need is: Save the file, close it, rename it, move it to other place, send it over email as attachment. And then I want to have the same Data Source path in my PivotTables as I had before I saved the file. How can I do it?
My Office version: Microsoft Excel 2013 (15.0.4454.1503) MSO (15.0.4517.1005) 32-bit

    Hi,
According to your description, I suppose the issue may be caused by some reason.
Do you link the outside data source?
I think if the file moves the file elsewhere, or renames, or email,
data source paths can’t be change.
But, your data source paths add the absolute path.
Do you link the outside data source?
I recommend you zip the file and send it as Email attachment.
If the issue exists, you may save as it in a new name and test it in another computer.
    Regards,
    George Zhao
    TechNet Community Support
I am pretty sure that I don't have any external links in the document.
However, even if I did - why would it change Data Source path for all of the Pivot Tables, when I did not request it?
I tried zipping it and sending to other person over email, but he got the file with changed data source paths.
I can even record a short video to show what happens.
Actually, I just did it. You can see the video here: http://screencast.com/t/qMBild3ck9b
It is rather big - 23.8 MB.
Let me explain what I showed there:
I opened my original file. I showed that there are Pivot Tables, whose Data Sources are in the same file, on various other sheets.
I showed this for all of the Pivot Tables in the document.
I saved the file using Save As in a different folder and under a different name (TEST.xlsx).
I then opened that saved file to show you that it is fine, and the Data Source path for one of the Pivot Tables is the same as it was in original file. It is the same for all of the other Pivot Tables.
Then I closed, and simply renamed the file to TEST123.xlsx.
Opened it, and first thing wrong - Security warning.
Then I got ‘Cannot open PivotTable source file ….’ messages. And, as I showed, now all Data Source paths have been changed to full paths of the file, that was created by Save As (TEST.xlsx) from original file.

  • Country grouping changed from '99' to its own grouping.

    Hi Experts,
We are planning to change the international country grouping ('99') for some of the countrties to their respective country groupings (say '20' for Norway, '23' for Sweden ). Currently the countries attached to international country grouping are working fine.
Now, if I have to change the grouping as mentioned above, what are the things I have to take care? Can you please provide me the detailed checklist for the same?
Also, we are not using Time and Payroll for international countries and it is taken care by a 3rd party vendor.
    Thanks & Regards, SWapnil Mishra

    Hello,
To get the correct grouping value assigned to employees feature IVWID (and IGMOD) need to be configured properly.
Then to correct/update employees data the following report will need to be run
Programs RPUFACECPRFN and RPUFACEVIEKN and program RPUFIXDS correct the missing fields on personel numbers.
See notes 845592 and 783499 (they refer to CE and activation of old and new framework but I think it will help also in your case).
    Best regards
    Sarah

No, you can't. The purpose is to have a backup copy of them and provide another way of putting them on other iOS devices.

  • Mac Mini sound goes to zero on its own.

I have had my mini since 2009. This issue has happened intermittantly since I got it but has happened several times in the last while. The sound output goes to zero. On it's own. I go into system preferences to sound and slide the bar back to my desired level and all is ducky until it happens again. I suppose I should have spoken to Apple about this when Applecare was still in play but it did not happen much. Silly me. Any ideas about the cause? I am guessing this is mobo related and a cure will be costly. If I go that route.
I run a line out of the headphone jack that splits to my amp and a set of headphones.

Well, it was just a shot at a possibilility.

  • My mac shuts down suddenly on its own

    Please help
Since installing 10.4.8 my mac has been shutting itself off on its own.
While I would normally applaud such energy saving activity, it isn't
appreciated when I'm in the middle of doing something.
Pretty much that is the story: mac shutting down suddenly while I'm busily typing something. One moment working, next machine has turned itself off.
None of the logs show anything interestingly amiss, but I could be wrong.
Anyone else experiencing this sort of thing?
    Thanks in advance,
    Carol Hatcher

My Appologies. I mistakenly thought that since I filled out the
fields below the message box with the model, os and other details that
they would be visiable to all. What a fool i was.
I have a iMac G5 running Mac OSX 10.4.8 right now.
    Other details:
    Processor: power pc
    Memory : 2G
I have owned it since May of 2005.
The shutdown now occurs while logging in. It took me three tries
tonight to get up and running.
Also, when logging in, i have to wait over a minute for the keyboard to be recognized - no response in the password
    field.
Best wishes to all and thank you all in advance,

I've no idea of the cause of this problem, but i'm really scared about the possibility of being a virus, so I'd be very grateful if you give a hand with it.
    Thank you very much

    Hello MIke:
    Welcome to Apple discussions.
No need to apologize. My English, at times, is not very good and it is my native tongue!
First, there are NO viruses that affect a Mac running OS X - none.
Open system preferences>accounts>log in items. See if "terminal" appears there (probably not).
I suspect this article will help yoiu solve the problem:
