Mac's using a Windows Print Server

I am an administrator for a dual-platform school district (elementary and middle schools). We run both AD & OD, and all of our Mac's are bound to both AD & OD. Our users authenticate to Active Directory. My issue is printing from our Mac's (MacBooks to be precise). Currently, all of our PC's are printing to a Windows Print Server (Server 2003). When setting up printing on our Mac's, we use IP printing. We use IP printing because when we attempt to install printers via Windows printing, it requires authentication when printing (which I don't understand, since the users is already authenticated to the domain). The real issue is this. Because our Mac's use IP printing, the print queue is local to the machine. So, if anything impedes the print job, it pauses the printer, and in our environment, the only way to un-pause the printer and the local print queue is to log in as the local admin, clear the queue, and un-pause the printer. This is a PITA. I need to find a stable printing environment for our Mac's, and I would prefer to use our existing Windows Print Server.
Does anyone have any experience in having Mac's print to a Windows Print Server, without having the authentication issue?? I have heard of third-party products such as PaperCut, but I really don't think that's necessary for what we are trying to do.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance.

I am running a very similar setup to what you are trying to do. Mine is OD and the windows server (2003 64bit) is bound to the OD.
My users on both Mac and Windows are printing to and through the windows server, so this way I see and can control everything in the print queues.
I will try and help you setup.
Firstly are the printers installed and shared out on your windows server?
If that is done logon to your windows print server and then logon to *local security policy*. Under *Security Settings* go *Security Options* and look for “*Network security: LAN Manager authentication level*” and changed it to “*Send LM & NTLM responses*”.
Okay it all and log off your server.
Now goto a Mac client you want to print from.
Go the usual way of adding the printer on a Mac but this time do not use IP printing choose windows instead then select your domain in the list. You will then see all the servers on your network now select the print server in the list. If you have shared the printers out when you installed them on the print server you will see the list of printer installed on that server.
Select the printer you would like to install at this point it may asked you for the user name and password, use the network name and password of the user that will be using that machine and tick to remember password. Because it’s coming from a windows server it will not auto select the correct driver for you. You need to select the correct driver for yourself then click add if you have any extra trays etc you need to manually select them too.
The printer will be added, the first time you goto print on this printer it will ask you for password again click to remember password.
Repeat the installation for all the printers you need to add and don’t forget to make a print after each install so you can add the remember tick on the first print.
If you are using something like keyminder on the mac’s then when the password changes from AD or OD the keychain will automatically be updated by keyminder. If you are running Snow Leopard you do not need keyminder.
Hope this helps.

  • Integration Mac Client and a Windows Print Server

I want to know if it is possible to install a Mac Printer in a Windows Print Server so that later Users could connect to the WIndows Print Server and install their Mac Printer on their Mac Clients.

I think he means the Windows server will host the printer queue and he want to add the Mac drivers to the server so that when the Mac connects to the queue the driver is downloaded automatically. This is known as Point and Print on Windows and AFAIK this is only available for Windows clients.
When you go to the Sharing tab on a Windows server to add drivers for an alternate Windows OS to that of the server (if needed) or alternate platforms (such as x64), there is no provision to add a Mac driver.
Another point is that the Mac drivers are usually in a format not supported by Windows, such as DMG. The Windows drivers are copied to a repository in system32 for download to the client computers and the files are typically already unpacked (installed) on the server. The drivers would not be capable of being saved in the same format.
So I believe that by default, Windows has no ability to host the Mac driver. He would have to rely on a 3rd party product to perform such a task...

  • Getting http printing to windows printer server to work! - IPP over HTTP

Im trying to get our macs to print to our windows print server using web printing (http). The server is setup to accept anonymous as well as domain user print requests.
when i add the printer using advanced setup > ipp over http and enter our printer url, e.g. http://ourprinterserver.mydomain.com/printers/printername
and enter our printer name in the appropriate field, select the correct driver, any file sent the printer sits in the print cue.
when i looks at the cups page http://localhost:631, I see an error that that the destination printer does not exist.
    Has anyone had success?

I don't have a Windows print server, but the standard port for IPP printing is 631, so you need to specify that in the URI like this:
    http://ourprinterserver.mydomain.com:631/printers/printername
(otherwise, http defaults to port 80)

  • Printing a PDF document from a network printer hosted on Windows Print Server

    Hi
We have a use case where a XFA form needs to be merged with the XML file and later be printed on a printer hosted on Windows Print Server.
While I know the first part of merging the template with the data file, I am stuggling to get my document printed.
Here are the options that I have already tried -
    1) Used the generatePrintedOutput to render a flat PDF and convert it into a PS format.
    2) The output of the above service was input to the "sendToPrinter" service with following configuration settings
Input document     : <Document variable referencing to the output of the GeneratePrintedOutput service>
        Printer Protocol     : DirectIP
Server URI            : \\ <IP address of the Print Server>     NOTE: The Print Server is hosted on a different domain & is a Windows Server
Printer Name        : \\ <IP address of the Print Server>\<name of the printer>
Some more information about our LC servers -
    OS -> Unix
    Application Server -> JBoss
When I used these settings and invoked the process, I got the following exception -
2011-03-07 11:13:39,047 ERROR [com.adobe.livecycle.output.exception.OutputException] ALC-OUT-001-403: Could not connect to the DirectIP Server: \\<IP Address of the Printer Server>.

Therefore I tried to check if I am able to Ping the Printer Server from my Livecycle Server and found that the ping was successful.
Next - I changed the Printer Protocol from DirectIP to SharedPrinter keeping the rest of the settings same. In this case - when I invoke the process, it did not throw any error , but it did not print any document as well.
Any suggestion where I have gone wrong? Pls let me know if you would need more information to help me resolve this issue.
    Thanks & Regards,

    Well I found the answer......
I had to do the two steps below -
    1) Go to Admin UI, "Trust Store Management -> User & Password Credentials" and add a profile for my Printer server with login ID and password which can access the printer.
So in the "User & Password Crendentails" page, I click on "add" and fill the following values
Profile : \\ <IP address of the print server> ....... (It is important that you write the name correctly..for example " \\10.10.234.212"
USername : <user id who has access to the printer>
    Password  : <password for that user Id>
    2) In the sendToPrinter service, I used CIFS as the protocol and I have the proper Server URI as below
      \\10.10.234.212\<printername>
    And it worked ! .....

  • How can we print using the windows printer dialog window?

    Hi,
We recently got new printers and a printer setup on our server that are set to print in greyscale as a default. In the past the printers defaulted to printing in color. When I create VI's and reports I have used to set "Print on completion" or the print option from the Report Generation Toolkit, and I have received my prints in color. After changing the printer drivers on the server any printing method I used to do from LabVIEW will always produce greyscale prints. These prints are fine for everyday use, however we need color prints when the documents are for customers or for other official use.
If I could only send documents/VI's to that process the user could override the "greyscale" setting and select "color" in the cases where we need a better looking print. Obviously the other option is to save the document/VI as a file and later print it from any windows software (Excel, Paint etc.).
Do anyone have any neat tricks for printing using the windows printer dialog?

You can change printer settings programmatically via a .NET assembly. You can also bring up the Print Dialog to change settings manually before printing.

  • Mac G5 reports a windows 2003 server has only 3.4 megs when it has 534 megs

Hello, We use a Windows 2003 Server. We have several macs connected to that server. 1 of these macs shows the windows network share as having only 3.4 megs free. The other macs show the windows share having 500 megs free. The server share does have 500megs free.
Why would this one mac report that there are only 3.4 megs free?
    Thank you in advance.

We have narrowed down the problem and found the culprit.
The issue is only repeatable on 10.4.x (we used 10.4.11 for testing, but it may affect earlier versions as well)
10.4.11 Local folder created with trailing space in the name, then copied to the Windows 2003 server = loss of security tab on this folder
10.4.11 existing folder on the server has a trailing space added to the folder name = loss of security tab on this folder
10.4.11 existing folder on the server has the trailing space REMOVED from the end of the folder name = security tab returns with permissions in tact
10.5.x Local folder created with trailing space in the name, then copied to the Windows 2003 server = no problem
10.5.x existing folder on the server has a trailing space added to the folder name = no problem
10.5.x existing folder (created under 10.4.11) with trailing space in the folder name has the space removed = Error code 43, unknown error occured
Also interesting is that the illegal characters for Windows \ / * : ? " | in the folder name prevent the folder being copied to the Windows 2003 server in 10.4.11, but are allowed in 10.5.x - all expect the : which is an illegal character in OS-X as well. None of these illegal characters cause issues on the Windows 2003 server as they are simply translated to a space.
The solution would be either as AJ mentioned to purchase Thursby AdmitMac or to upgrade all the users to 10.5.x (which I'm sure would make Apple happier!)

How can I force mount a dvd that isn't even seen by Disk Utility? I can see it on the Mac when using my Windows 7 partition via Boot Camp, but not in Lion, which is how I would rather be running.

Well if there is a EFI block, then running a program in OS X isn't going to do a lick of good.
After all EFI was designed for Trusted Computing and Digital Rights Management, to act between the OS and hardware, can read drives, contact the Internet and everything.
Windows doesn't use EFI, will have UEFI in Windows 8 though.

  • How to set up new MBP to use D-Link print server

New to Mac.  MBP found 2 of my 3 printers right away.  Tried manually configuring the 3rd which is an older HP Laserjet 1320 connected via USB to a D-Link print server.  In Win you config using the IP address and port name.  Configuration appeared to work but nothing gets sent to printer.  If this is an easy fix I would like to go that route  but if the print server hardware is too old please suggest good alternative that will work for both Windows and Mac systems as I have both in the house.
    Thanks

I was able to resolve this by rebooting the print server.

  • Printing to a Windows Print Server

I consider myself pretty computer literate however I am comletely baffled at how to connect to a print server running Windows 2000 using my MacBook at work.
    I have tried going into:
System Prefs > Print & Fax > add printer > more printers
which brings me to two pull down menus that have options the options:
"Apple Talk, Blue Tooth and Windows" printing as well as "Canon IJ Network, Epson Apple Talk & Wirewire, Espon TCP/IP etc" The second drop down says "Network Neighborhood" or "Workgroup".
I am pretty sure I have tried every combo of these and nothing recognized the two printers on the server (Samsung ML-2150 and HP Business Inkjet 1200).
I made sure I have the most recent version of both drivers for Tiger 10.4.7 and I can connect (and print) to each printer directly using USB but not through the network.
I am using Airport to do so but I have used Ethernet cable as well to test and no luck. I am also hooked up through a Linksys WRV router and tried using a second router hooked up only to myself and the printer.
Despite all of the above, please feel free to dumb down the suggestions as networking is not my strong suit.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I can update anyone with more info if there is something I have left out.
    Thanks

    Hi,
I have come across several of your posts in trying to resolve a problem connecting to a printer on a G5 from Windows 2000. This post I could reply to.
First off, I think your documentation is great.
I have read http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/3000.html to try and connect from a Windows 2000 box to a Mac G5 running 10.3. I have followed it to a 'T', but I get the message that I can't connect to the printer -- either the name is wrong or the printer is disconnected. Checked each case, and keep hitting the wall.
I have been able to identify the Mac from the Windows box, and connect to a directory, but try as I might, the network printer will not show up in the network neighborhood. Typing in the name (queue_name) has not worked either.
I checked the /etc/smb.conf and printcap files. Should I be manuall inserting the name of the printer into the smb.conf file?
    Stumped.
Any ideas? Very frustrating bit this is.
    Thanks,

  • Banner page on windows print server messes up cifs printing

    Hey;
We're a small Mac population in a HUGE corporate environment. We're using Mac OSX 10.5 and Admit Mac to bind to AD. We set up printers through AD to print through windows print servers which works beautifully- unless the Print Server is set to produce a banner page with each print- then we get the banner page, a page of garbage and 20 blank pages. I can't request banner page be turned off for all printers we need access to. Has anyone experienced this? Found a work around? Know of a way to stop the banner page for Mac only prints?
    We're setting the printer up with this command (for example): lpadmin -p printername -E -v smb://printserver.ou.domain.net/printername -P /Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources/HP\ Color\ LaserJet\ 5550.gz
I notice in the ipadmin man page there are commands for banner pages-
    -o job-sheets-default=banner
    -o job-sheets-default=banner,banner
Sets the default banner page(s) to use for print jobs.
Is there a setting to not print banner pages on the client side?

I am not sure if these links will help, but there is a problem with the lp command in Leopard:

  • Domain Printing to Windows Print Server

    Hi all,
Does anyone have some basic tips to get 10.8 clients to nicely print to windows printer shares in a domain (active directory) enviroment?
I would really like to keep my Mac's - but printing is becoming the issue.
My Macs run 10.8 fully patched and are AD bound. They login and authenticate to fileshares flawlessly.
I need to print to a Windows Server queue because all jobs are monitored via Papercut. Papercut client works well on the macs.
There seems to be two different methods to attach a printer; System Preferences > Printers > Add Printer (Default / Open Directory) or Add Printer (Windows - Domain - Servername - Printername) - both methods seem to work (sometimes)
However I often get authentication / job on hold errors, or "'yourprinter' is trying to use the printer. Type the name/password of a user in the 'print operator' group".
    Yet sometimes everything works.
The last option would be to install papercut server on the mac server - and somehow join/share the databases, but I would like to try fixing the issues with printing first if possible.
    Cheers
    Matt

I have changed one of the labs to lpd printing - appears ok so far so will monitor it over the next few days.
The only way I can actually see its printing via ldp is using the cups interface (localhost:631)
The only issue I have now is that the print driver (Konica C360) defaults to 2-sided. This happens on PC and Mac, but is a minor annoyance compared to the inability to print.
Will let you know if its all sorted and mark as answer soon. Thanks!

  • Using a wireless print server... help!

Hi. I have a G5 on a wireless network using a LinkSys WRT-54G router. I just got a wireless print server (D-Link DPR-1260) and want to network my HP 6110xi All-in-one printer. 6110 drivers are installed, and printer previously worked fine when connected directly to computer via USB port.
Now, I want to share it over the wireless network. I believe I have the print server correctly configured... just not sure how to configure my G5 to print across the network to this printer. How do I set it up?
    Particulars:
    - LinkSys WRT-54G, 802.11g wireless router, firmware v4.20.7 (192.168.0.1)
    - D-Link DPR-1260, wireless print server, firmware v1.00 (192.168.0.10, static)
    - HP 6110xi All in One, latest drivers from HP downloaded and installed.
    - iMac G5, (192.168.0.100, dynamic IP)
Thanks for any help provided. Regards.

    Hi JD77!
    And Welcome to Apple Discussions
You have 2 computers respectively connected each to a printer.
    DSL Modem (ethernet)
    ||
    PC1 = Printer1 (USB) (Win)
    PC2 =Printer2 (USB) (iMac)
    PC3 WIFI WinXP laptop
The iMac has built-in Bonjour technology. So use that. If your windows PC has XP you can download Bonjour for that one as well and use that to share your printer.
What you can do is use the Airport Express and connect it to a USB printer. Make sure that it is compatible printer.

  • Printing from Mac Book Pro to windows printer Error 306

    Error 306
I tried several setups before I figured this out.
Trying to print to windows printer
Mac Book Pro / Canon MX 870 resulted in print error 306.
Home network with Linksys  wireless N router
First delete the printer on the Mac.
Make sure you go to Canon's website and download latest driver for your Mac. Canon's software driver site detects your operating system automatically and takes you to the driver you need, just make sure everything matches up. You can see the OS version you are using by clicking on the apple icon and then (about this mac)
I also down loaded network tool package. Not sure if you need it, but I loaded it too.
Now on the Canon MX870, go to the wireless set up menu. (key pad on the printer itself). Follow the promts and you will get to where you can enter your network password and get your printer to connect to your router. Now the wireless Icon on the printer will be on steady.
Now back on the Mac, Click the Apple Icon, System Preferences, then click on printers and scanners.
You will see, Default- Scanner- IP- Windows, icons at the top of the page. Just be sure the default is highlighted.
My Scanner came up first, then a few seconds later the printer appeared.
    Select the printer
Use the one with all the numbers after the printer name. (MX870xxxxxxxxxxx)
    Canon U Network
Click on it and then click the add button bottom right
Make sure your are always in good wireless signal strength throughout the entire process.
    Hope this helps.

  • Mac shares on a Windows 2000 Server

I run a Windows2000 server with mac shares for my department. For some reason I have a file name length restriction of 31 characters (including the file extension). This is not a restriction on the Windows Server itself nor is it a restriction on any of my local MAC Workstations (OSX 10.3.9/10.4.9). But when I access the Windows/MAC Share from a OSX Workstation, I get the restriction. Files with greater than 31 characters show up "restr~1.indd" or similar.
    Any Help?
    John

    Hi John!
This is a limitation of the AFP (AppleTalk Filing Protocol) file sharing protocol used by Windows Server. Even in Windows Server 2003 it's still stuck at version 2.2, which has the 31 character limit. Mac OS X 10.4 by comparison is at AFP 3.x, which raises the character limit to 255 characters.
Since Microsoft has made no improvements in Windows Server's File Services for Macintosh for the past two or three versions of the server software I highly doubt future versions will be updated or even incorporate File Services for Macintosh.
    You have a few options:
    1. Get a better AFP server such as Group Logic's <http://www.grouplogic.com> ExtremeZ-IP. It's expensive but well supported.
    2. Use SMB instead of AFP. It's built into Mac OS X.
    3. Use a better SMB client such as Dave from Thursby <http://www.thursby.com>. I recommend this over #2 for more than infrequent use. It too is well supported.
    4. Install a Mac OS X Server system. This can be an XServe or just a workstation running Mac OS X Server.
    Hope this helps! bill
