Mac saving files to external hard drive.

I was trying to save some files from my mac to an external hard drive. When I attempted to save them the computer said that there was not enough room on the drive (which is insane because theres plenty of memory open and I was trying to save a very small word document). I googled the problem and I saw some thing saying that it may be a problem concerning a NATF? I discovered that the external hard drive was formatted as NATF. Whats the deal?

Hi Sean,
NTFS is indeed the culprit here.
Mac OSX can read from NTFS Hds but cannot write to them.
For that you would need third-party helper tools like NTFS-3G (free) or the commercial ones Paragon NTFS for Mac or Tuxera NTFS for Mac.
If you use this EHD solely with your Mac you might want to consider reformating it to use the Mac OS Extended file system.
(Be aware though, that this would delete everything that is on the EHD right now !)

Stefan

  • How to "Ignore Ownership On This Volume" When Saving File to External Hard Drive?

    Hello,
I just switched over from Photoshop CS3 pc platform to the MAC version, and it gives me the message that I can't save what I've I've just done - I have my photo files on an external Seagate Free Agent Hard Disk - When I followed the instructions to "Select Disk/Choose File/Get Info/Click Disclosure Triangle next to Sharing & Permissions" - Then after I did all of this, there was no option to select "Ignore ownership on this volume." Instead, the only thing it said was, This is read only."
Surely, I don't have to give permission to save each and every file - This is a very serious hobby for me, but I am doing it out of my home, and no one else at this time uses my computer.
Before submitting this request, I called Apple support first, and they tried doing a Disk scan and repair of the permissions, but this was only for the internal Macintosh HD drive, not the external one that is related to this incident.
Thanks For Your Help ahead of time!
Also, this might should be saved for another separate question, but I had to set change my resolution to 1920 X 1200 - The text, etc, was much too large for especially doing anything in Photoshop. This new iMac has a 3.06/4 GB RAM/1 TB internal HD/NVIDIA GeForce 8800 Graphics Card.

    Buko-
To tell you the truth - and I apologize for that statement - I woke up early this morning, and it hit me that I took what Lundberg02 said earlier the wrong way! So, I couldn't wait to get back on and apologize to him and all of you - And I hope that you will forgive me.
When I think about it now, perhaps he is right - This may not have been a pertinent place for me to insert this question. But after spending a long time with Apple about it, and then Seagate - I decided that the only other place I could go was to ask you guys. I thought, perhaps someone here had encountered the same problem when switching from pc to Mac platform. But perhaps I shouldn't have.
Actually, Seagate - I think - solved the problem, at least this erase procedure was working after two hours - until I decided that I'd cancel it, and take it back to Costco for a refund, which I did. And the Seagate rep told me that he didn't blame me, because the drive was getting a little old, and if I used their warranty program, I'd probably gotten a refurbished one, anyway. So, all of this trouble I've put you good people through has gone "for naught".
But hopefully, you'll be acceptable in the future when I ask more applicable questions, when my wheels really start spinning. Otherwise, I probably won't come here that often, anyway. I just enjoy fixing up old black family photos and coloring some of them. And I got the basics down. You know, like cloning, healing, and layering them to death!!
Thanks for understanding - And for forgiving me.

  • I had all of my video files that I work on in iMovie saved to an external hard drive exclusively to save space on my Macbook.  I had just finalized a project, went to work on another one and files couldn't be found, were not deleted how do I find them?

I had all of my video files that I work on in iMovie saved to an external hard drive exclusively to save space on my Macbook.  The other day I had just finalized a project and went to work on another one and when I opened the project I could see what should have been there, but scrolling over the entire clip I would only see black and that the file was missing.  I did not drag anything on the hard drive to the trash or move anything.  How can I get those files?  These are videos of my kids and I am devastated and willing to try anything!

Control click does not work - no option to find files.  I have no idea what to do.  When I look at the usage of the external drive the space is being used, but I cannot find the files.  I am going to try MacKeeper's Undelete and see if I can make any progress with it.

If you want a cross-platform solution that doesn't require the use of third-party software, use an external drive with hardware encryption. The device will have either a physical key or a numeric keypad. I don't have a specific recommendation.

The only thing is we need to buy this software. if there is a free solution to inter change files between NTFS and HFS it would be better,
Don't use NTFS, remove your data off it first and change the format to something the Mac and PC can read, but doens't cost money or require software.

    Hello bbryson68,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
From your post I understand you're wanting to move iMovie project and event data to another drive.  I found the following information in the iMovie help that answers your question.
Copy or move projects, events, or clips between libraries or storage devices
Connect a storage device that contains the target library to your Mac, or copy the target library to your Mac.
Choose File > Open Library, and choose an option from the submenu. You can choose from recently opened libraries, locate an existing library on your Mac, or create a new library. The selected library is opened in the Libraries list, with the first event selected and its contents displayed in the browser.
In the Libraries list, select the event that contains the item you want to move or copy.
In the browser, select the item you want to move or copy.Tip:  To select multiple clips or projects in the same library, hold down the Command key as you click the items you want to select, or drag a selection rectangle around the items.
    Do one of the following:
To move items between events or libraries: Drag the clip or project to another event or library.
To copy items between events or libraries: Option-drag the clip or project to another event or library by first starting to drag and then holding down the Option key as you drag.
    Work with multiple libraries

  • I can't copy files to External Hard Drive : Please help..

    Evening,
I've just bought a Macbook and am just getting to grips with it. This is my first question on this forum...the first of many no doubt.
Problem I've got is that I can copy file's from an external hard drive on to the MAC but I can't go back the other way and copy file's from the MAC on to the external hard drive - it says 'New Folder cannot be modified'.
When I go into 'Ownership and Permission' of the external hard drive it says I can read only.
The Hard Drive is a Octigen USB 2.0 drive if that helps..
    Any ideas?
    Thanks for your help

How confident are you that MacFuse/ntfs-3g is a reliable option for ordinary humans? It is at version 0.2.2, not long out of beta, the FAQ mentions slow write performance and other rough edges (possibly fixed in the current version), and this is a comment by the author as of 1/11/07:
"Small disclaimer: Please note that MacFUSE is a complex piece of software, and it is a work in progress. We believe in releasing early and often, so we're releasing it now so that the community can help us to make it more robust."
I have no need for it whatsoever, but if I did, I would have concerns about using it for a backup drive.

  • Paging file on External Hard Drive?

    Sorry guys,
I seem to have read something on this, but can't relocate the post I thought I saw it on. Most posts talk about the Paging File and External Hard Drives as two different instances. I am always learning something new so am asking if you guys are doing this, or did I misread something.
Is is possible to have a Paging (Virtual Memory?) file on the same External hard drive as where Scratch Discs are saved? (Or could be a separate Internal drive where Scratch Discs are located). PrE PDF user guide talks about even several different drives, where different parts of each project are stored, way too complex for the basic user like me. A separate Paging file for each hard drive? Just asking.
If you guys are doing this what are the benefits, and is there a procedure for doing it? I am not talking about the OS Paging File because I think I already understand that. But extra, additional paging files depending on how many hard drives a person would have or wants to use. Sounds wacky.
I don't think I am asking this very well, but hope you catch my drift.

    Bill and Steve,
Bill, if I am understanding correctly you are talking about having only One paging file spanning drives. I was asking about leaving the Windows Managed Paging (Virtual Memory?) File on C Drive and an additional Paging File on an extra drive. Again maybe I read wrong in the various forums.
I do have 3 eSATA external drives which I use for storing various family movies. I may buy a 2 TB internal later, but this is what I have now. My desktop is an i7 2.8ghz wiith 12 GB RAM, 64 bit Windows 7, 1 TB Hard Drives RAID 1? (MIrror Image). I have a huge paging file. I haven't been using an external drive for my Scratch Discs, but was going to set one up to do that, so thus my reasoning for asking about a separate paging file.
The eSATA connection is really quick, so it seems I will have no problem there. But the problem as I understand it, is all Premiere Elements versions (I have PrE7 & PrE9) up to PrE10 are 32 bit and are going to only use a few GB of System Ram before (or along with) using the Paging File. So if there were additional Paging Files, maybe it would be less CPU intensive. I don't know if Bill measured CPU usage in his tests, with and without the extra paging file. Not talking about speed necessrily but CPU usage.
I do Defragment quite a bit even though it says 0% defragmented, and expecially after I have moved a bunch of files around. For each Project I keep everything in one folder, even exports, so that if I want to delete a project but keep the AVI, I don't have to look all over the computer to delete various parts of the project. I may change some of that procedure later, but works for now. My Scratch Discs are Same as Project, thanks.
Thanks for one TIP I believe Bill gave in another Post was to not store Projects? or video? on the Desktop, because it may have different characteristics (video editing problems?) than other storage folders. I thought that was interesting because I think people get used to putting stuff on the Desktop because it's easier than going to other folders. So now I just have Desktop Shortcuts to the folders I use all the time.
Don't know what Statically Managed means.

  • Installing Mac OS on an external hard drive

I've had an 80GB Mac Mini for about a year and I absolutely love it. Yet, because I use it so much, during this short time I have quickly maxed out the storage with a large amount of photo and music files. Can I install my current Mac OS on an external hard drive where I will have 4 or 5 times the hard drive space for photos and music and still retain the option of booting to that or my Mini? I had a support tech tell me this was possible, but at the time I wasn't ready to do so.
Another option would be to store music and photos on the external hard drive such that iTunes and iPhoto will navigate to folders located on this drive instead of the internal Mini hard drive. I'm sure this would be the best option, but I don't know how to do either of the two.
Would greatly appreciate any assistance and advice. Thanks!

Since I've gone both routes, I figured I'd chime in. Shortly after buying my mini bought an external firewire (don't even think about USB no matter what the sales drone might tell you) and cloned my system to it. I then created a nicely sized BootCamp partition and used the external for Mac work and the internal for PC work. I kept a small Mac partition on the internal removing everything from the OS and Disk Utilities - basically a fast diagnostic disk. That was a great way to work and a side benefit is that the 7200 RPM external FW drive booted up a bit faster. Disk space taken up? Well, yeah, but how big is an external drive? Besides, there are external drives (and do it yourself cases) made especially for the mini so you can stack them.
This summer the internal drive started clicking - not a good sign - and so I cloned the PC partition and bought a new internal drive. I've had a fair amount of experience opening minis but I make up at least one new curse every time I do There are a couple mini fan wbesites around so check them out to find out what drives are mini friendly today, check out the instructions, and see if the job is for you. It isn't brain surgery but it is more involved than putting a bandaid on a skinned knee.

  • I am using referenced images, saved on an external hard drive. It would be most helpful to transfer the new captions (version name) to the referenced images which still have the camera code on them. How can this be done? Thanks so much!

You're question is hard to follow. Are you looking to rename your master files to the version name? Or are you looking to do something with IPTC caption field and the masters?

I am trying to free up space on my pc and moving itunes files to external hard drive. I have followed instructions and believe I have file copied to new drive, but I am having trouble moving file to recycle bin as the instructions say. I am getting the following error message: cannot delete ituneshelper.dll:access denied, make sure disk is not full or write protected and file not in use. I know the file is not in use when trying to move. Any help would be most appreciated. I am on Windows XP.

Yes. And you should not have moved that folder. Put it back. To move your iTunes library move the folder from User's Music.

  • How do I restore iTunes library from Backup files on External Hard Drive?

How do I restore iTunes library from Backup files on External Hard Drive and keep the new iTunes library on the External Hard Drive. I have all the media and playlist and .xml .itl files, just want the iTunes to recognise the content.
I backedup my iTunes content by dragging to External Hard Drive. Formatted and reinstalled OS. My iTunes content is so large, that I wish for the Library and content to remain on the External Hard Drive. I have all the music files and playlists, I just cannot get the iTunes application to display all the content. Hoping to Not have to drag and drop all the content to be recopied into new iTunes organised files.
Troubleshooting this by researching other conversations on the web, I have come stuck for a solution. One Troubleshoot told me to hold down the Command key and then lauch iTunes and a dialogue box will appear to Choose a new library, however when I try this, no Dialogue box appear to give me the option!?

It sometimes has that funny switch symbol on it too.
