Mac says usb stick is full when it isn't

I'm trying to copy files to a usb stick but my mac keeps telling me the stick is full, even when I know it isn't. Deleting other files on the usb stick doesn't help at all. I've tried a few different sticks - sometimes I can get it to work but eventually it decides the usb stick is full even when it isn't and even if I delete all the other data off it, and then it won't copy.

Hi and welcome to  Discussions.
Just remember, after you delete something you'll need to empty the trash to recover the space, and for the USB stick it will need to be attached whilst that recovery takes place.

• Why does TimeMachine say the disk is full when it isn't?

Hello!
A lot of my backups recently have been failing because TimeMachine says the disk is full, when that simply isn't true. As of right now, I have 1.18 TB available of
2 TB. Why do my backups fail even when sufficient space is there?
Thank you so much in advance!!!
-Professor AR

This main explanation is here.
OS X Yosemite (10.10)
This is pretty much equivalent to kids talking to each other on tin cans over a wet string.
The TM in Yosemite is also exceedingly bug infested.
The best solution for now..
1. Use ethernet instead of wireless to do backups.
2. If you upgrade installed Yosemite a clean install might improve it.
3. Using local disk (USB drive plugged in for example) can be a huge improvement over networks and wireless.
4. If you continued the backup from the old OS, wipe the TC disk and start over a new TM backup. (you can archive the old one if you want to maintain the history).
5. Use an alternative to TM until apple get their act together.. eg Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper etc.

• Media Player says zen micro is full when it isn

HiI have a creative zen micro and am running media player ... everything works fine with one exception. Media Player says that?then zen has?5.7 gb which is fine but it shows that it is full which it isn't. This can be confirmed by unplugging it from the usb port and checking the memory under system info which confirms there is 5.8 gb with .6 gb free. The removable disk function is not turned on. What can I do to remedy this? Thanks Carl">[email protected] m

• My mac says that iPhoto is installing, when it isn't

Hi All - my macbook pro - which I recently updated to Mavericks, says my iPhoto is installing - when it clearly isn't. I can't access my photos. Can anyone please help?
Thanks

I tried that - it didn't work.
But what I noticed is that in the App store - if I look under 'Purchased' it shows that iPhoto's installation was 'Paused'. But when I clicked to restart downloading, it just says 'Waiting' - but goes no further.
Would another download of the Operating System help?

My mac won't save to a flash drive. It always says the disc is full when there is plenty of space. Solution pls?

Hi and welcome to Apple Discussions,
Did you get the flash drive from a reliable source. There are some available on the net that show a large capacity but are only 512 mb. or 1 gb. drives that have been altered to display a much larger capacity.
Good luck,

• I am trying to restore my phone but everyone I go to do it, it goes to Update which takes 2 and a half hours, and everytime it fails. Ive tried four times now. I'm trying to restore because it says my memory is full, when it is not. I'm so frustrated.

I am trying to restore my phone, but when i go to do it on iTunes, it Updates to 4.3.3 however everytime the 2 and a half hour update finishes, it FAILS. So the update fails, and the restore fails. Its happened 4 ties.
Im trying to restore my phone, because it says my memory is full when its not and an online solution says to restore. I cant restore because it wont let me update.
Im so frustrated, i cant take any pictures, download any music or apps, and its really getting me down. Please can someone help.

This error generally indicates a hardware failure.  Bring the phone to Apple for evaluation.

The phone usually can hold 24 messages before the voicemail is full, but now I have only 21 and it's saying it's full.
I think your Voice mailbox goes by time, not # messages, so if one or two of the messages is longer, then it would be "full" faster.
Go to youmail.com and follow the directions to set up youmail.
Just curious - why do you need to save 20+ messages?  Once I deal with them, I delete them.... and I rarely have more than one or two \saved messages....

• I can't do any edits to my photoshop project because it says scratch disk is full when I have 50gb free!

My scratch disk is pointed to the C drive(the only drive I have at the moment). When I open photoshop it makes  a 64gb Temp file! that leaves me with 50gb free but whenever I go to make a change or add text it says scratch disk is full! Help please!!

@Ronald,
I'm glad to know that you can get by on only 120 GB .  However, that's not my experience on Windows.  Admittedly, Mac and Mavericks in particular seem to manage memory a lot better than Win.  But I've been using PS since ver 4 and it's always been a huge memory drain.
In CS6, I'm finding my scratch disk often exceeds 100 GB.  I have dedicated almost 300 GB to mine and it's still not enough for everything I do. But I know how to manage my resources so I can get by on what I have until new computers arrive.

• Time machine backup of Mac-formatted USB stick impossible in Lion?

Hello. Since Lion, Time Machine refuses to backup my USB sticks. In Options, they appear as excluded from backups. I can take them off that exclusion list and hit Save, yet when I reopen Options, they are back on it and still excluded. I even erased and re-formatted them (Mac OS Extended (Journaled)), no change. (The USB Sticks are: 4.04 GB LaCie itsaKey Media; 4,04 GB Generic Flash Disk Media.)
All this applies to USB Sticks only, not to USB external volumes. These are excludable and integratable as expected.
I can't imagine backing up USB sticks is now generally impossible; would anyone have any idea what might cause this problem?
Thanks, best

Yep, trying to include the extra storage disk in the TM backup. I realize I can connect the disk to a backedup Mac as a quick fix, but need the extra storage disk to remain an airdisk for remote access, independent of my computer.
So, I'm guessing there is no way to include it as long as it's sharing a spot on the AEBS's USB hub?

• Computer says usb/device not recognized when plugged in??

When I plug in my sons ipod nano 7th generation, just recently says usb/device not recognized and doesn't light up when plugged into the wall either??? Any suggestions??

This came from another thread, but worked for me.  Problem is with newest iTunes 4.62.  Unistall iTunes, as well as its helper programs (Apple Application Support, Apple Mobile Divice Support, and Apple Software Update).  Reboot, and reinstall iTunes.  It will reinstall all the other ones and you should be able to connect your nano.  Good luck.

• Can't receive Text messages - says inbox full when it isn't.

I have a Motorola Hint.  Starting yesterday (or at least that's when I noticed it), whenever I receive a text message I get the following error:
Inbox is full. Erase older Text Messages to receive a new Text Message.
However, I have deleted more than 30 text messages (and picture messages) and when I go into my Inbox the phone correctly states "Txt msg 83% full".  Yet when I receive a text message from someone else, or even from my own phone sending it to myself, it still give the same error above and thus won't download the message.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.
Rich

I have been using the phone for 3 years and never had a problem like this.  Frequently my phone is filled to 90% or more, and if it gets to 100% I just delete a message and a rejected one arrives.  Now I have deleted 30+ and not received any new messages, just the notification that the inbox is full (which it isn't).  Unless something happened that would change the number of messages that can be stored on the phone, so the network says the inbox is full but the phone still thinks it isn't, it shouldn't help to delete more messages, but that's my only option so far.  Did the size of a text message change over the last few days (eg from 160 characters to 255 or something)?  That would be a logical explanation for why it could hold 347 messages before and now can't hold 290...

• Apple says "iCloud storage is full" when it is not

I just got email from Apple <[email protected]> saying "You have now exceeded your iCloud storage".  But the bar on any of my devices as well as on my Mac says I have 2.9 Gb available of 5 Gb!  The individual imtes (Backup, data, email) only adds to ~2Gb so 2.9Gb free sounds correct. Something does not compute.  Any ideas?  The message is pretty stern: "As a result, you will not be able to send or receive new email messages with your iCloud email address until you free up storage space or buy more storage."

I just got the same e-mail.  My account seems to be sending and receiving emails without issue.  I think it was an error.  I received a warning and an exceeds e-mail in the same minute, but am only using 20% of my allocation.
I'm not giving it much credence.

• Mac and Word say 2GB Flashdrive is full, when its not

All of a sudden, my 2GB Flashdrive is saying its full and Word will not let me save to it and I can't drag files into it. I know I've never put that much on it, nor have I deleted anything off of it.
Any suggestions?

Hi Beth,
If it's Fat32/MS-DOS format you'll get a full error if there are too many files at root of the drive.
You'll need to remove/delete at least one item so you can make a folder, then move everything else to  that folder. Make more folders for newer things, as Folders have limit's also, just not as limited as the root... top level of the drive.

• MacBook Air saying hard drive is full when it's really not

I have just started getting error messages saying that my startup disk is full, saying I have "Zero KB" available, which makes sense being I have been doing a lot of downloading recently and have been learning Java programming (lots of Java and Class files), and the fact that 80GB isn't a lot of storage space these days (and hasn't been for at least the last 5 years), most notebooks these days have at least 200GB hard drives in them (that is one thing, that as much as I love Macs, has always irked me about them, very little storage space)
I have deleted over 30KB worth of unimportant files to free up some space (one file being 24KB alone), then opened a Finder window only to find out that it still says "Zero KB Available", if I delete 30+KB worth of files, shouldn't there be an equivalent amount of storage space afterwards?  It doesn't make any sense that I would still be getting "Zero KB Available" after I deleted 30+KB worth of data
I am not sure if it's related, but for quite a while, I have noticed that my MacBook has been making a clicking noise, this has been happening for quite a while, though I have been hearing it less than before, and just recently I am now hearing what sounds like a screech coming from the MacBook (mostly when I put it on standby by closing the screen, right when the sleep mode initiates), though I have ignored it, being until now, I have not noticed any problems with the MacBook, no loss of data, no corruption, etc., and now the only problem I am experiencing is that it's saying my hard drive is 100% full even after deleting some files, though does fail when I try to verify the disk in Disk Utility
So is there a reasonable explanation for why it's saying my hard drive is full, or is it possible that there could be a potential disk failure?

18tracks, a KB is small, Ill give you that, but the reply you typed alone, if copied to TextEdit and saved in TXT or RTF format should only be several bytes (under a KB), I have Java and Class files with plenty more text in it and they only range from 1KB to 8KBs, way below 30KB, though if I were to save this webpage as an HTML file, then yes, it would probably get close
Regardless, it doesn't matter how little I delete, even if I only delete one 1KB file, it should still say 1KB free, yes that is barely anything, but at least that means it would be accurate
My point, was I deleted 30+KBs worth of data (that is a rough estimate, I am not exactly sure how much I deleted) and Finder STILL said that I had "Zero KB" available, I don't know about you, but 30KB sure sounds like a HUGE difference than 0KB
To me, this means that it doesn't matter if I deleted 1KB, 1MB, or even 1GB worth, Finder would still say that "Zero KB" is available, and the OS will still refuse to save or manipulate files, to me, that's a sign that something much bigger is going on, and with the clicking and screeching going on (which may not necessarily be the hard drive, but you never know), and the fact that my hard drive failed a verification, something tells me my hard drive must not be in good shape, and could possibly be disastrous
