Mac security and maintenance advice needed.

can someone please advice me how to keep my mac secured and well maintained. i mean the macbook hardware as well as software.
any antispyware or antivirus i should get for mac? would u recommend one? and which one? also suggest me some free alternatives.
on pcs putting realtime scanners would slow down the system. i hope thats not the case in mac.
also, any maintenance software like a defragmenter? i have been told macs dont need a defrag program. recently a whole lot of permissions went bad when i did a 'verify permissions' check.
also, can someone tell me how often one should calibrate the battery?

Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.5.1 or higher are Intel Mac compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. Versions 1.5.1 or later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep. Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts had been significantly reduced in Tiger and Leopard.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline. Note that presently AppleJack is not compatible with Leopard.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
5. Carbon Copy Cloner (Donationware)
6. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
7. Intego Personal Backup (Commercial)
8. Data Backup (Commercial)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
2. Toast
3. Impression
4. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.

Do You Need Anti-Virus Protection for Your Mac?
According to Rich Mogull's article, Should Mac Users Run Antivirus Software?,
"The reality is that today the Mac platform is relatively safe. There are hundreds of thousands of viruses and other malicious software programs floating around for Windows, but less than 200 are known to target the Mac, and many of those are aimed at versions of the Mac OS prior to Mac OS X (and thus have no effect on a modern Mac).
It's not that Mac OS X is inherently more secure against viruses than current versions of Windows (although it was clearly more secure than Windows prior to XP SP2); the numerous vulnerabilities reported and patched in recent years are just as exploitable as their Windows equivalents. But most security experts agree that malicious software these days is driven by financial incentives, and it's far more profitable to target the most dominant platform."
Mr. Mogull is a computer security expert. I recommend reading the entire article as it is quite informative.

Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
would keeping the charger plugged in extend battery life?
It will neither hurt nor improve battery life. The life of the battery is determined by the number of full charge cycles - about 500 is the average life. If you use the computer mostly in a location with access to an AC outlet then you should use the AC adapter rather than run on the battery.

  • Mac video hard drive and camera advice needed

My newspaper has agreed to switch to a Mac and Final Cut Express video editing setup and I need to make some recommendations to them as to what to get, since they are willing to buy two MacBook Pro laptops, a video camera and a couple copies of Final Cut Express. Help needed:
1/ What configuration of a MacBook Pro is suggested? The regular hard drive that comes with the computer and an added SATA hard drive for the Final Cut Express scratch disk and file storage? How big should the drives be?
2/ A Mac and Final Cut Express compatible AVCHD video camera with an external microphone shoe, costing about $1000 to 1,2000. Any model suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Douglas
    [email protected]

Goodness, Studio X, what an aggressive response from someone who knows nothing of the background to my request for advice. I am no expert as perhaps you may be, but from that school of mid-size and smaller daily newspapers whose staff has had to teach themselves video with a lot of self-learning, little funding, trial by error and forums such as this.
For what it's worth, I trained under our former multimedia editor for a couple years and have since published perhaps 50 video features and audio slideshows to our paper's website, using a tottering system of Premium Elements 4.0, lousy PCs and inadequate cameras. But we've made do while arguing repeatedly for more investment - which is why I finally just used my personal MacBook Pro and Final Cut Express to file a half-dozen deadline video features recently for the paper from a PGA-tour event in our area.
After them being pleased with the speed and results of that, the beancounters are now willing to make a small investment in a better video set-up, which will be for two MacBook Pros with 500 GB external Firewire drives for video storage and scratch disks, Final Cut and a Canon Vixia HF s21. Now, I have a question for you: Do you always come six guns blazing into forums like this and shoot at people who are just trying to up their game a bit with advice from the otherwise other helpful people here? It is to those folks that I now return my attention and my thanks for their aid.

  • Mac Pro RAID configuration advice needed to address photography workflow

I am a semi-professional photographer and I am moving off a Windows machine and over to a Mac Pro.
I am waiting for the new Mac Pro to arrive and have purchased (4) 500GB SATA drives to replace the 250GB drive the system will arrive with.
I am considering setting up drive #1 as a stand alone boot drive. The second and third drives would be set up in a RAID 0 config and the 4th drive set up as a RAID 1 drive which would mirror the content on my RAID 0 set of drives to automatically backup the content on drives 2 & 3.
I think it would be beneficial if I describe my image processing workflow briefly so that you can understand why I am considering this RAID configuration (I've never set up a RAID configuration in the past so this is all new to me).
    Image Processing Workflow
It isn't uncommon for me to return from a photo shoot with an 8GB Compact Flash card full (approx 750 8mb RAW files).
    1) I plan on uploading my card to the boot drive (#1) where I would hold them temporarily.
    2) I would sort thru the images and trash 80% immediately in most cases.
    3) Next I would open up the "keepers" and do the initial post processing in Adobe RAW and save them to drives 2 & 3 (the RAID 0 set).
    4) Further post processing (the heavy lifting and the most taxing operations in Photoshop and associated filters) would take place as I access these files from the RAID 0 set of drives.
    5) All of my files would be mirrored to drive 4 as I work them. Once post-processing is complete I would copy the files from drive #4 (RAID 1)to an additional external 500GB drive for archiving purposes and then eventually delete the files from drive #1 and the RAID 0 set.
    6) Once drive #4 (and the external drive) is nearly filled I would pull both and archive them and replace both with fresh drives.
Is there anything wrong with taking this approach? Can a single drive be set up in a RAID 1 configuration to mirror a set of drives in a RAID 0 configuration?
Is there anything else I should be considering?
Thanks for any assistance you guys can provide! I appreciate it!!

For the purposes of 500GB drives in RAID, I would go with WD RE2. they format to 465GB and performance falls off @ 65% and beyond anyway.
I even "short-stroke" drives to just 60% and then stay within 1/3 full - if I want to insure the maximum I/O.
Memory: 4GB is pretty much minimum but using more than 8GB isn't efficient. Ideal: 4 x 2GB.
Shame that the Hitachi 1TB drive costs over $399 for now, fast and might be better than 10K Raptor. There are also 750GB drives for $249, but the RE2 isn't quite ready to ship.
Never want to get into using 75% or more usually, though large (8-20 drives) RAIDs can hold sustained I/O for video editing and multiple streams.
One 750GB or 1TB (930GB formatted, 800GB "usable") might make sense.
How about a SATA drive case w/ hot-swap. Think of 1TB "floppy" if you will :-)) Unlimited archiving of projects.
All you want is an inexpensive eSATA 1x 2-channel PM controller and any cases. Two drives that you can use drive trays as needed.
there are also 'spare' drive sleds if you want to have the option of popping a drive out, and use it internally. $29 each or $49 a pair.

Vista 64-bit can or does work quite well now on Mac Pro... if you ever get into a jam and just need to. SP1 by end of the year will even have more support for UEFI 2.0 (Apple uses Intel EFI 1.1).

  • Cpi-files - problem to open in Mac osx and FCP. Need help

I have camera Sony Hdr-sr1 and i have problem becouse mac osx don't see films from my camera, it is PCI files. FCP don't see it either.
    Can i do something?

the SR1 shoots AVCHD in HD mode and MPEG2 in SD ... the AVCHD you can import (and transcode) via Log and Transfer with FCP 6.0.1 or later, the MPEG2 you need to transcode yourself prior to import (you can use the free MOEG Streamclip app to do this: choose Export to Quicktime and set the Compressor to DV/DVCPRO - NTSC)

  • Mac Mini and WPA Help needed

I just upgraded my wife's USB wireless adapter to a Linksys WUSB54G which supports WPA. When I try to invoke WPA personal from my macmini, I get a message that reads that my macmini is not WPA capable. Both machines are attached to an Airport Extreme. The airport is running 5.5.1. I'm running 10.4.2 on the macmini.
I'm almost up to date on my airport software, running, I think 4.1. I've seen postings warning against 4.2.
    What am I missing?
    Steve

Indeed - but the preceding discussion came about because someone wanted to use WPA security on a Mac running 10.4.2 without installing the Airport 4.2 update. That will work (as was already pointed out above) but you will get a non-fatal error message when attempting to do this.
I do understand the original poster's concerns over installing the Airport 4.2 update. While the vast majority of people (like yourself) have no problems, there are still a sizeable number of people who run into trouble when installing this update - and recovering from that problem can sometimes take nothing short of a complete reinstall of MacOS 10.4.

  • Collectors and TCOLL - advice needed

    Bonjour,
In my RTCTOOL report, I have written as a warning:
    7. Note 12103 Collectors and TCOLL
Description Planning table TCOLL for SAP workload collectors for 700 (note 966309 )
Implementation Press the lights icon to get the detailed check log.
Add missing entries to table TCOLL using ST03N > Expert Mode > Collector
and Performance DB > Performance Monitor Collector > Execution Times.
Schedule RSCOLL00 as an hourly batch job if not scheduled.
Everything is green , but: RSSTAT98 has System A instead of S -> is in yellow.
If I go to st03n - Performance Monitor Collecto - Execution times + Table maintenance, I do not have any valid report: RSCOLL00
Any ideas on how to get green ?
    Thanks

I suggest you should check for the note and the probelm.
Basis Release 6.40: Note 970449 describes the contents of table TCOLL
    for Release 6.40.
Basis Release 7.00: Note 966309 describes the contents of table TCOLL
    for Release 7.00.
Basis Release 7.10: Note 966631 describes the contents of table TCOLL
    for Release 7.10.
Alos check the job logs of SAP_COLLECTOR_FOR_PERFMONITOR.
But if you want to just make it green then you can do so :
Click on the problem line then click F6 or Set-->Green button on the top.

  • Backup and Recovery advice needed

I have a database which is used for reporting on multiple customers. Data for each customer is provided on a monthly basis. Each montly dataset is stored in its own tablespace.
For example, customer A's data for Jan, Feb, Mar resides in three separate tablespaces:
    tblspc_a_2010_01
    tblspc_a_2010_02
    tblspc_a_2010_03
The same is true for all other customers:
    tblspc_x_2010_01
    tblspc_x_2010_02
    tblspc_x_2010_03
    etc.
I care to only retain three months worth of data. With this way of organizing the data, I can simply drop the tablespaces and datafiles I no longer need.
The tablespaces need to be in read/write mode.
Now I'm trying to find the best backup & recovery method for this scenario. I'm thinking about using RMAN to make a compressed backup of each new tablespace as the data arrives, so that in case I need to recover, I can pick and choose which tablespaces to recover. I also want to be able to restore & recover tablespaces to a new database.
I would like some ideas and suggestions on the best way to go about this.
    Thanks,
    Christoph

Is all the data in this coming from other sources? That is, is it just a copy of data that is in other databases?
Assuming "Yes" I would consider breaking it into two pieces:
    1. Data which can be easily and quickly refreshed from other sources.
    2. Data which cannot be easily refreshed.
Number 1 does not need much in terms of recovery, perhaps a script.
Number 2 could use RMAN either a cold backup if your service level allows, or archivelog and RMAN so its always available.
I had a similar issue a while back and since all my data comes from other databases I wrote a complete refresh script. The script takes awhile to write but its in portable making recovery less of an issue. I run a full data pump nightly for an extra option. My script refresh 1 table at a time following this format:
    1. Drop the table
    2. Recreate the table
    3. Add indexes
    4. Add grants
    5. Create or replace synonyms
    next table.
Another advantage is you can refresh any table at a moments notice, the reporting tables have far fewer columns than the production version to save space.

Anyway thats the background information, the engineer told me there is a fibre optic cabinet freshly installed 1mile from me. My exchange currently is 4miles from me in pomeroy county tyrone but once this box goes live my internet will come from there instead, affectively ill be 1mile from the exchange then. Doing a bit of research I found out this cabinet goes live 31st july 2010 so do I have to order bt infinity to get a better speed than i have now? I have had no letters no contact nothing, I wouldnt even of known about this fibre optic 40mb service only the engineer came out. In the availability checkers theres no information yet about my phone number, it just says 1mb like what im getting. If someone could let me know how to order the new service or does it be automatically updated on 31st july. I want the new speed asap.
Another thing since the ip profile has been stuck at 750kbps ive noticed in modern warfare 2 the latency is alot worse, sometimes doesnt find a game until it gets to <110ms. Really annoying. Before using speedtest.net i would get a ping of 53 now I get around 80ms.

How do I get a mod to look at this? Here is my speedtester info

Do i need to wait just for speed to go back up? Been low for a week nearly now. The engineer said there was water on the line or something and thats gone now and I have been synching higher than normal, I usually only sync at 1440 or so, its 1664 atm. And by my reckoning that would be 1.25 i should be getting. Please help.

  • I've used Firefox for as long as I can remember. I'm a Mac user and have recently needed to switch to Safari because Firefox is so slow. Help me or I'll have to stop using your browser. Bob Semchism

For several months now my experience with Firefox has been getting worse and worse. Basically you site has slowed to a crawl. Can you fix it or do I simply give up and go to Safari?

Thanks for that. Much more constructive than the last comment. It's only the restriction code I can't recall, not the access passcode. So I can currently access the device, just not age restricted content. Does that's make a difference? I also wondered if anyone knew how many attempts you get to try to get it right. Now tried 21 times and so far nothing bad has happened but I am concerned I'll eventually be completely locked out of the device. That doesn't seem in the spirit of things though. Surely it's foreseeable that a child could repeatedly try to guess the code so I can't see that it would be right to lock the device down completely in that circumstance, particularly if the access code is being typed in correctly every time.
    Thanks

I then load the recovery partition by holding down the option key immediately after pressing the power button.  Macintosh HD, the windows partition, and recovery HD pop up, I select recovery, then go into Disk utility. Then the Windows partition is in the top left, I select that, and repair disk, however the repair disk option is not accessable. The only option is verify disk. Repair disk is not available!!

  • Stratosphere 2 locked on blue screen and froze - advice needed

My Stratosphere 2 is two weeks old.  Today the screen turned blue and the whole phone froze.  I couldn't turn it off.  I took the battery out.  Should I try to get a new phone?

Well if you took out the battery, you can try this hold in on the power button for about 20 to 30 sec. with battery pack still out). Return the battery pack to the phone & power it up and see if the Issue is still present if it is and your under the 14 Day return then i would return it for either a replacement of the one you have or a Different Model..
Now if the problem goes away but re-turns in say a day or two and your still under the 14 Day re-turn i would still way in the Option of getting a re-placement..  But hopefully it straitens itself out..  Good Luck & Welcome to the Forum b33

  • AD590 and 6008: advice needed

I have to measure an outdoor temperature with a AD590 and a 6008.
The range that I expected to measure is [263K...313K] in other words
    [-10C..+40C].
I was thinking to send +5V provided from USB6008 to power AD590 (located
at about 5 meters from DAQ board), then use an AI (configured as RSE, in
order to minimize ground loop since AD590 is a NRSE source) with a 10k
resistor (0,5%), connected from AI+ and GND input, so to have a
    conversion of 10mV/K.
    Is it a good solution?
Then the voltage range should be 2.63V...3.13V.
What do you suggest at this point?
I was thinking a conditioning with an differential amplifier (Av=4.42)
so to scale 2.63...3.23V to 0...5V and get a better resolution.
Or you suggest to connect simply the only resistor?
What do you suggest? Any hint/suggestions is really welcomed.

    Rossi,
That sounds like a pretty decent approach to me. I would
probably recommend scaling the measurement to 0-5V in order to take full advantage
of your DAQs resolution, just keep in mind that resolution isn’t going to be
the only limiting factor in your measurements accuracy, but also the precision
of resistor that you use. So I would determine if the precision of the resistor
is going to be good enough that scaling up to the 5V scale makes sense. If it
is not, then you may not want to go through the hassle of the extra circuitry to
    scale the signal.

  • Hard drive crashed after mac security update

My hard drive crashed right after downloading and installing the mac security and safari updates last night? Other than doing a complete re-install from my installation dvd and back-up, is there another way to fix this problem?

Nope. You may have to replace the drive that crashed if you cannot reformat it.
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc.  Insert the disc into the
optical drive and restart the computer.  After the chime press and hold down the
"C" key.  Release the key when you see a small spinning gear appear below the
             dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, set the format type to Mac
OS Extended (Journaled) then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. When you finish Setup Assistant will complete the installation, after which
you will be running a fresh install of OS X. Now you can begin the update process
by opening Software Update and installing all recommended updates to make your
             installation current.
