Mac security - noob questions

Hi,
I recently got a Mac mini for home use. I am wondering how secure my files are if I give someone else an account on my computer.
Also, my housemate wants me to use a filer and keep my files stored there for backup purposes rather than on my computer itself.
Would he be able to access and open my files or is there some way that I could keep them from being opened?
Please help, I know nothing about Macs.

Hello Gira, welcome to discussions.
I am wondering how secure my files are if I give someone else an account on my computer.
If they need to use your computer, create another user account on your system for them... and limit their access. Don't give that user account admin privileges of any kind.
For added protection of your own files, you might want to consider using encrypted disk images.
wants me to use a filer and keep my files stored there for backup purposes rather than on my computer itself.
I'm not sure what this means... but it sounds like your housemate wants you to store files on a network server of some kind. If you have files that you don't want anyone to access... don't do this.
Would he be able to access and open my files or is there some way that I could keep them from being opened?
If the files aren't stored on your own computer, I'm sure there are ways for others to open and view your stuff. Your best protection is to keep your own files on your own computer, in a secured fashion. You can try filevault, or encrypted disk images.

  • Switching to mac, basic noob questions

    Hi, I'm new to this. I have some xmas and bday money and i need a laptop. I have two desktop PC's (one XP and one Vista) and have had PC's all my life. I feel like switching it up and giving macs a try, it would make my purchase more fun. I've done some research and i think i want the black macbook with 2 gigs of ram. Here are some questions i need answered before going much further.
    1.) I notice that every 6 months new macbook models come out. I also noticed that the last three (at least) have been very similar in hardware. Is it common that the new macbook probably coming out in the summer will be unvieled at macworld? If there is a big difference i might wait, i don't want to get the last model in a product line. Id the difference is another slight processor speed increase i won't bother waiting. As far as i know this isn't available information yet, so i'm just looking for a 'usually they do/don't' type of response.
    2.) Is the apple care support really all it's cracked up to be? I'm not about to let my purchase go to waste on me, but at the same time if the support is rarely needed i might not bother. I'm a student and don't have too much money to blow if it's usually a waste. I generally like getting the warrenty for my things, i'm just looking for a more experienced opinion.
    3.) Are the Apple stores in the Best Buys independent from Best Buy, or are they the same? I would like to put the 900 or so dollars i can down on this and put the rest of my best buy card to pay off over the next few months.
    4.) If they're the same, does anyone know if the apple computers fall under best buy's "no interest for blank months of purchases over black?"
    thanks!

    Hi Thomes08!
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
    It sounds like you're in the process of making an excellent decision to go with a 2.2GHz "BlackBook" and up your RAM to 2.0GB. I think you'll be extremely pleased with your purchase.
    1.) Unfortunately, these forums are not designed to be used as a means of product speculation. Matter of fact, it's against the Terms of Use (of these discussion pages) to speculate on upcoming product releases. We'll have to wait the 2-weeks for Mac World to see what comes out, there's no way to have any insight into the excitement that Steve's Keynote brings to technology.
    2.) I'm a big fan of AppleCare, mostly because it ensures peace of mind over the reliability of my product for the 3-years that it'll serve as my primary machine. While, I've had multiple Macs last beyond 3-years, I also typically swap it out for the "latest and greatest." Especially with a portable and your student discount. The cost of APP for a MacBook is a relatively "no brainer" especially if you consider the cost (for parts & labor) of even the most basic repairs if the machine falls out of warranty.
    3. I'm not entirely familiar with the logistics of the agreement that Apple has with Best Buy, so I'd rather not speculate. I do know that Apple also offers financing options through BML (Bill Me Later) and Juniper Bank, but I'm unfamiliar with the specifics of a split payment. Buying an Apple product through Best Buy still entitles you to all the same "benefits" of ownership, so there's no advantage (or disadvantage) to shop @ Best Buy.

  • Noob questions...windows emulation on mac OS 10.4

    getting my ibook later this week and was wondering about windows emulation. i don't have an intel processor in my ibook (obviously), so what's your recommendation for a product that runs windows on a mac? and, total noob question, do i have to buy a copy of windows? i already have windows on my dell laptop.
    thanks in advance for your help.

    Hello,
    so, do the new macbooks have some kind of software
    pre-installed that runs windows? my friends who just
    got a macbook tells me he can run windows programs if
    he needs to.
    The MacBooks have Intel processors in them. So, no emulation is necessary. They can directly install and run Windows if they want.
    The reason you need a program like Virtual PC on an iBook is because it uses a PowerPC processor which Windows cannot communicate with. And, the PowerPC Mac's architecture is completely different.
    So, that means you need a program like Virtual PC to completely emulate an entire PC computer. Basically, it is a program that simulates a real computer and then translates those Intel instructions into PowerPC instructions that your iBook can understand.
    There is a severe performance penalty for all this translation. The iBook G4 will not perform like a regular Windows PC. It will be much slower, and you will need to be more patient. With a G4 iBook, you could reasonably expect your performance to be comparable to a 300 MHz PC running Windows XP.
    With a 1.8 GHz iMac G5 and 2 GB of RAM, I was experiencing performance comparable to a 1.3 GHz Intel Celeron system with 256 MB of RAM (which I happened to have around for comparison).
    But, for more intensive tasks, the performance was more comparable to a 500 MHz system.
    Anyway, back to the Intel Macs. Those machine's only need a free Apple Utility "Boot Camp" to provide the drivers and create a Windows compatible boot partition:
    http://www.apple.com/bootcamp/
    And, then they need Windows XP Home or Pro. That's it.
    With programs like Parallels, they can run Windows inside the Mac OS (or along side it) much like you would with Virtual PC:
    http://www.parallels.com/en/products/workstation/mac/
    i am trying to figure out where this might be useful
    in the first place.
    It is useful if you need to be able to run Windows software, but don't want to buy a PC. It's more convenient to have one machine that can do everything than it is to have a Mac and a separate PC.
    Feel free to ask additional questions if you have them. Or, if you like, hit solved on the post if you feel everything is answered.
    But, do let me know if I can answer any additional questions or need to re-state something clearer.

  • Mac security-browser, Java, Flash

    Just now read an article about Mac security. The writer offered several tips, including—
    –Never use an administrator account for day-to-day computing.
    –Use a sandboxed browser such as Google Chrome.
    –Uninstall/disable the standalone Flash Player.
    –Uninstall/disable the Java Player.
    These tips raise some questions. Why the concern about the administrator account? What is a "sandboxed browser"? Why the fuss about Flash and Java? If I use Mountain Lion, if I keep the OS up–to–date, and if I keep Flash and Java fully up–to–date, what's the big deal?

    I cannot explain why, but my browsers started recognizing the Java plug-in when I went to the following web site by Oracle.
    http://www.java.com/en/download/testjava.jsp
    My hunch is that between the support note listed in the above and going to the Java browser test it started working, but I am not really sure.

  • New Version of Mac Security Available message??

    I am having this message appear on all my Macs...New Version available.  New Version of Mac Security has been downloaded and is ready to be installed.  Please click "install now" to start installation.  This message looks very questionable.  Is it real?  Should I be installing?
    Thanks!

    Is this appearing in a browser window? When the window showing that message is frontmost (click on its title bar to bring it to the front), is your web browser the active app? (Look at the application menu, next to the Apple menu on the menu bar, to see what the active app is.) If so, it's a pop-up from some web site you're visiting on all those machines. You can (and should) ignore it.
    If it's not a browser window, can you provide a screenshot? Press command-shift-4, then push the space bar, then click on the window. The screenshot of that window will appear on your desktop, and you can insert it in a post here using the camera icon in the post editor toolbar.

  • Hard drive crashed after mac security update

    My hard drive crashed right after downloading and installing the mac security and safari updates last night? Other than doing a complete re-install from my installation dvd and back-up, is there another way to fix this problem?

    Nope. You may have to replace the drive that crashed if you cannot reformat it.
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc.  Insert the disc into the
             optical drive and restart the computer.  After the chime press and hold down the
             "C" key.  Release the key when you see a small spinning gear appear below the
             dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
             button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
             After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
             size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
             partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, set the format type to Mac
             OS Extended (Journaled) then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
             with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
             Assistant. When you finish Setup Assistant will complete the installation, after which
             you will be running a fresh install of OS X. Now you can begin the update process
             by opening Software Update and installing all recommended updates to make your
             installation current.

  • Alternating mac face and question mark after i tried to install OS X 10.3

    I have a Powerbook G4 and I tried to update my operating sytem from 10.2.8 to 10.3 but it froze. After I restarted it I got an alternating mac face and question mark. It just ejects the CDs I try to put into it except for the installation disk for OS X 10.1.3. When I put that one in a smiling mac computer come up then all this type comes across the screen, something about kernels and panic.
    Please help me, I've got a project due soon.

    Could someone please help me,
    when i open my power book g4, an alternating Mac face and question mark appears, and no matter what I do it is still there.
    it only changes when I insert the installtion CD of MAC OS X 10.3, but after the Apple logo appears, the screen went white and sometimes just blue, and it just won't work. Then after restarting, the alternating Mac face and question mark still appear.
    i also tried the hardware test, after doing both of the tests, the result is consistently "passed". But after restarting, the same problem happens.
    what should i do?
    please help me
    thanx in advanced

  • Syncing & Streaming from the same Library? - Noob question

    Good Evening - I have a silly noob question that I can't believe I can't find the answer to on my own: I have been trying to determine if it is possible to sync and stream from the same library simultaneously.
    I purchased the 40GB aTV and it has been syncing just fine with my Windows iTunes. I told it not to sync a few albums I never listen to so I wouldn't have issues with other songs or movies. I am upgrading to a new iMac and I am am going to re-rip many of my existing CD's to get them into a consistent audio quality of 192 AAC or above. This is going to push my library size to well over the 40GB limit in just music, not including any movies or TV shows I choose to pull in.
    The manual does not make it obvious (or I am not reading clearly) what happens to items that don't sync over - I assume they are still playable but will have to stream. Is there anyway to mark "preferred" albums or artists that should get synced and not streamed in case the iTunes library is unavailable for whatever reason?
    Also, when I change libraries is the aTV going to completely re-sync even though the music is must going to be migrated?
    Thanks for taking the time to answer these silly questions.

    That's not quite what I was looking for.
    My question remains, what happens to the items that can't be synced from my main library to my aTV? My library is just a smidge bigger than the available space on the aTV and not everything syncs over. Does that mean I won't be able to play those items not synced from my main library...
    As my library grows I don't want to have to choose what does and doesn't get synced from my library by mood. For example, every year my wife buys new christmas music - right now I could exclude it and everything else gets copied over, but come thanksgiving that stuff better be there for her and I don't want to choose other music or movies to remove.
    I guess I will just have to play to try it out.

  • State of Mac security?

    So, I keep getting these emails from Comcast's Constant Guard service claiming "Constant Guard from XFINITY identified that one or more of your computers may be infected with a bot."  They seem to be dead serious about it, though Comcast never provides any details about what triggered the email. They only provide a link for you download a free copy of...ew...Norton.
    But, the security emails keep coming, about once every two weeks or so. Something is triggering Comcast's snoops to raise a flag my way. I think it's just occasional spikes in traffic due to suddenly having three computers online, but it's not something I can prove.
    Has anyone else been the recipient of these Comcast emails? I also tend to be of the opinion that the Comcast emails are largely a marketing campaign, since they also direct you to their own for-fee security service.
    So, what's the state of Mac security today? Are there really any bots that can make a home on a Mac these days?
    FWIW, my home network is an iMac, two iBooks and, occasionally, an iPhone, connected via an Airport Extreme Base Station (WPA2).
    Thanks,
    Jim

    Technically your Mac can become part of a botnet if you installed something unawares of what it was.
    There has been a Mac botnet back in 2009.
    http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/2009/04/evidence-suggests-first-zombie-mac-bot net-is-active.ars
    You can check with this site to see if your IP address has seen traffic associated with a botnet.
    http://botnetchecker.com/
    Could be those emails are phishing scams. Visit their site and see if there is any official word about these emails.
    Comcasts DNS servers get hacked from time to time.
    Use OpenDNS or Google DNS instead, only take second to reconfigure the router.
    Norton is the last thing you want on your Mac, ClamXav would be the only good solution I would think.
    Of course simply reinstalling OS X  on top of the installed version and then Software Updating should clear out anything in OS X, but then third party programs and plug-ins should all be reinstalled.

  • Not able to get rid of security-related questions in runtime

    Hi,
    I am simply using NetBeans 6.0.1 and the emulator QwertyDevice and the emulator platform WTK 2.5.2 for CLDC.
    I have chosen Alias as trusted in the signing option in the project configuration page. however still I am getting security confirmation questions in runtime to access the local files for instance.
    Would anyone please advise me how to get rid of that?
    Also I have deployed the application on SonyEricsson k800i and would like to get rid of the security confirmations on that device as well. What is the guideline?
    Thank you

    Right clicking on it is not even an option, just hovering over it seems to induce a "nuclear" reset of the whole desktop and graphic card on the iMac.
    Have meanwhile found a possible solution by erasing the dock preference file in the user/library/preferences folder to reset the dock to it's default state. Will try this out through a Skype conversation with that Buddy.

  • How to get rid of "Apple Mac Security?"

    Hi, a company called "Apple Mac Security" downloaded some program onto my PowerMac before I could stop it, and now they pop up warning that I'll crash if I don't use them to remove things that have supposedly infected my computer. I did a search for their program to remove it but nothing comes up. I'd appreciate some help, I know these people are crooks.
    Thanks!

    Thank you, Mad Macs,
    I didn't install the "Apple Mac Security" program, so when I went to search for it in my applications file and the other recommended places, it wasn't there. I thought it was hidden because it seemed to install something before I could close out of Safari, and it popped up again when I was browsing. Very insidious. But I appreciate your response and help, and am happy to have found Apple Support Communities. I am a cartoonist, and am working on putting a daily strip online, do you have experience with Live Trace in Illustrator? I used to use Adobe Streamline to convert line art into Vector Images, and it was much more user friendly than Live Trace, but I may just not know how to use Live Trace correctly.

    Security upgrade question - I have a 4S phone v6.01 with an upgrade to IOS 7.04 already downloaded and ready for install.  I would like to install the 6.1.6 security upgrade instead. How do I delete the ios7 in the queue or have the 6.1.1 pushed as an option to the phone?

    You can't install iOS 6.1.6 on that device and must update it to 7.0.6.

  • Another Noobie question - readLine()

    Hi all
    This is another one of the extreme noob questions. I wrote a small program to read form a text file
        String NetworkLine = new String();
        try{
            FileReader inputFile = new FileReader("Test.txt");  //
            BufferedReader in = new BufferedReader(inputFile);
           try{
               while (in.readLine() != null){
                NetworkLine = in.readLine();
                System.out.println(NetworkLine);
           }catch (IOException e){
                System.err.println("Error in reading the file");
        }catch (FileNotFoundException e){
            e.printStackTrace();
        }My Test.txt is
    One
    Two
    Three
    Four
    Five
    Six
    without the *
    The output I get is
    Two
    Four
    Six
    I cannot figure out why only even no. lines are being read. I inserted a breakpoint at the line
              System.out.println(NetworkLine);This shows me that only even no. lines are being read by readLine(). Any help will be appreaciated.
    Thanks
    Ayesha

        String NetworkLine = new String();
        try{
            FileReader inputFile = new FileReader("Test.txt");  //
            BufferedReader in = new BufferedReader(inputFile);
           try{
               while (in.readLine() != null){  // <-- This reads a line, checks it for null ,and drops it
                NetworkLine = in.readLine(); // <-- this reads the next line
                System.out.println(NetworkLine);
           }catch (IOException e){
                System.err.println("Error in reading the file");
        }catch (FileNotFoundException e){
            e.printStackTrace();
        }So the upshot is that you print every other line.
    Corrected:
        String networkLine = new String();
        try{
            FileReader inputFile = new FileReader("Test.txt");  //
            BufferedReader in = new BufferedReader(inputFile);
           try{
               while ((networkLine = in.readLine()) != null){
                System.out.println(networkLine);
           }catch (IOException e){
                System.err.println("Error in reading the file");
        }catch (FileNotFoundException e){
            e.printStackTrace();
        }
