Mac seems to turn off whenever I close the lid

Whenever I close the lid, my mac seems to turn off. Once I open it the screen will be a greyish hue (you can still see the windows and desktop) but there is a loading bar with a number of small vertical bars. This happens whenever I close the lid leave it for a while (1 - 2 minutes). What is this and how do I fix it?

Does it really and truly turn off? Cause if you get a grayed out screen and a progress bar, that normally means the Mac coming out of hibernation and should be up and running as soon as the progress bar finishes. As for why it doesn't sleep, no clue unless you or somebody changed the configuration.
The difference? Sleep merely shuts the screen, CPU, GPU and network down, while placing the RAM in a low-power quiesced state; recovery is very fast cause the system merely powers everything back up, validates that the RAM is not corrupted and all is good to go. Hibernation copies the entire content of RAM to disk in a "sleepfile", then turns everything off; recovery entails copying the sleepfile back to RAM, slower than sleep but still much faster than a complete boot. By default, Mac does both, using sleep as the preferred method and hibernation as a fallback measure.
There'a a utility called SmartSleep that allows you to switch one, the other or both. Available for a fee on the App Store, or use the previous perfpane free version from here: http://smartsleep.en.softonic.com/mac

  • Why does my laptop turn itself off when i close the lid?

i have a HP pavillion dv4 notebook. sometimes when i close the lid and let it go to sleep, and then come back to use it, the computer is off. i get a weird DOS-like black screen with white text when it comes back on asking me if i want to start windows as normal or something like this. has anyone encountered this? does anyone know how to fix it?

Try resetting the iPod.  Nothing will be lost.
Reset iPod touch:  Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
You can also try another cable and usb port.

  • My MacBook Pro screen turns off when I open the lid!

This has been driving me nuts, and also apparently Apple as well.
When my MacBook Pro is connected to a power adapter, if I close the lid it sleeps like a good little Mac. When I open the lid, the display comes on instantly. Then after about a second, it goes black. The LED backlight turns off. I can get it to come on using either of two ways: 1) touch either of the brightness buttons, or 2) remove and replace the power connector.
Now, here is the weird part: it only seems to do it when I am logged in as me. If I login as guest, it doesn't happen. That would seem to imply it is something about my profile that causes it to happen. So I whacked ~/Library/Preferences and it still happened. So where is this particular bit of nastiness hiding?

OK, so I think I solved my issue.  It was caused by the system not going to sleep (The screensaver thing was a dead end).
When I ran the console app pmset, I got something like this:
    ➜  ~  pmset -g assertions
    12-06-29 9:11:06 AM EDT
    Assertion status system-wide:
       PreventUserIdleDisplaySleep             0
       CPUBoundAssertion                       0

The process that was causing PreventSystemSleep to be 1 was "org.cups.cupsd" which is the print service.  So I checked all my printers, one of them was "In Use".  When I opened it, there weren't any jobs listed.  I went through the options and selected Jobs > Show Everyone's Jobs and sure enough there was a job there.  I deleted it and everything seems to work now.
The odd thing is that print job was probably from my other account which didn't seem to have this screen problem.  Anyway, I hope this helps anyone out there....

  • Powers off when i close the lid

    Hey all,
I am having what seems to be a problem with many others with HP laptops.
Recently after an HP update, my laptop shuts down when i close the lid.
It seems as though, something in the update has corrupted something.
Im not sure if HP needs to put out an update to correct this issue, or if I need to fix the BIOs somehow, or what.
If anyone is familiar with this issue, and can assist me in fixing it, it would be greatly appreciated.
Please keep in mind before replying that....
    1. this was not happening before and is happening now
    2. I have gone into the power settings and confirmed that it has been switched to "do nothing" when the lid closes
    3. only started happening after HP did an update
    Thanks in advance

I see that after doing an HP update your notebook shuts down when you close the lid.  You have checked the power settings and they are set at do nothing.
I would try this step first.
Go to the command prompt and run as administrator.
Type powercfg -restoredefaultschemes and press enter.
You can run the HP Support Assistant to aid with HP updates.
You could consider doing a restore back to before the HP update?
Have you ran the built in  Windows troubleshooter?
If you would like further assistance, please provide your exact model of HP notebook and your Operating System.
How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number?
You may also consider contacting HP support for assistance. They can remotely access your system to help overcome difficulties.

  • How to disable mac book sleep for when I close the lid. I have a monitor attached to the mac book and as soon as I close the lid on the mac book it goes toi sleep. Any way to disable the sleep mode? Thanks

Boss bought a new monitor for his mac book. We connected it but he rather keep the mac book lid closed in order to work on the bigger monitor screen. Soon as he closes the lid, the mac book goes to sleep mode.
Is there a free way to disable the sleep mode?

When the MacBook goes to sleep just hit a key on your external keyboard and the monitor will come back on.

  • I recently got my GPU error fixed, but now my MacBook Pro shuts down whenever I close the lid.

I bought my computer in July 2010.  After 3 and a half years I finally discovered there was and an issue.  GPU error. Fine. ok.  I went to the store and even though they were nice enough to fix it for free, I'm now having another issue.  Whenever I shut my computer lid, the screen and keyboard doesn't work.  I can hear the computer fans but no matter what I do I can't get the keyboard or screen to work.  In order to get it to turn back on, I have to hold down the power button until I hear the inside turn off.  Then I have to hold the power button again to turn it back on.  DId they give me a faulty part when they fixed it? Or is there something I can do? My computer is in great condition. No scratches, never been dropped, etc.  HOW DO I GET MY SCREEN AND KEYBOARD TO WORK?

    Try resetting the  SMC http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
If not take it back to where you had the work done.

  • Hi, I have a problem with my Macbook, whenever I close the lid, it sleeps normally, but then, when I open it, it turns on for about a 1/2 second then shuts down. Then, when turning it on, I have to hold the power button, or it stays off. Please help!

My Macbook shuts down when I put it to sleep.

I would try each of these in order seeing if the problem is solved after each:
    1. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM and Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC).
    2. Boot into Safe Mode, then reboot normally.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    4. Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • Mac Loses connection every time I close the lid.

Whenever I close the lid of my Macbook pro, when I open it again and try to browse to a page in safari the browser says that there is no connection even though airport shows that it is still connected. In order to fix this I need to turn off airport for about 10 seconds then turn it back on to regain connectivity. This is quickly becoming a chore can anyone help with this?

Put the hard disk to sleep when possible in energy saving settings
Note: Portable computers that have a battery you should not remove on your own include MacBook Pro (Early 2009) and later, all models of MacBook Air, and MacBook (Late 2009).
    1.     Shut down the computer.
    2.     Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
    3.     On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
    4.     Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
    5.     Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.
    Resetting PRAM and NVRAM
    1.     Shut down the computer.
    2.     Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    3.     Turn on the computer.
    4.     Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    5.     Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    6.     Release the keys

  • I cannot change song order on playlist with highlight and drag. I have turned off shuffle and highlighted the far left column( up/down arrow) of playlist. My mac pro is running 10.5.8  and am using itunes 10.4.

I cannot change song order on playlists (old or new) with highlight and drag. I have turned off shuffle and highlighted the far left column (up/down arrow) of playlist. My mac pro is running 10.5.8  and am using itunes 10.4. I can't drag and drop "music" to "playlist" but can right click and get the option to "add to playlist." No such option for moving song within playlist, only the up and down arrow which moves song from top to bottom list, so if it is #4 from top it will move to #4 from bottom. Stupid I know. I spent over an hour with Apple support, reinstalled itunes, restarted and rebooted computer. Networked with my laptop which is running 10.6.8 and itunes 10.4 and it can drag and drop. The final Apple support solution was to reinstall my operating system. I would prefer not to. Any other ideas?

After looking at other people's posts, I think it's official: there is a bug. Itunes support said I should not have lost the drag/drop tool and I haven't on the laptop that is running itunes 10.4 and operating system 10.6.8. I chatted with someboby who lost both his drag/drop and side scroll and what we have in common is a wacom tablet for a mouse. My laptop is a wireless mouse. I reinstalled whatever updated driver that wacom has out there, shut the system down for night, hoping for magic, but alas none to be had. So if I want to change song order, I network the laptop and desktop, share the screen on the laptop, drag and drop to my heart's content and curse Apple for making me work this hard to find the tool that was once at my fingertips. Apple also let me know that if I want to share songs in household that the hundreds on songs that were purchased for .99 need to be repurchased for another .30. Maybe Apple is holding my drag/drop tool captive til I pay up the money or Maybe the next update will fix the problem, I for one give up for now.

  • Mac book pro, Turns off and goes under protection especially with an External monitor on.

    Mac book pro,
Turns off and goes under protection, sometimes without any specific motivation, but most of the time when an External monitor is pluged-in.
I use it when I work with final cut pro, and this problem it's becoming huge and changing my workplans....
It can turns off also 10 times in two hours.
In many forums I read that the CPU temp could be the problem, but I've checked it and It's always around 62°-68°....
In some others they say that the new RAM could be the problem too.
Is anybody able to help me? (Underneath you can check the Panic Report and my mac informations)
    Thank you so much.

  • My Mac randomly just turned off and now it wont turn back on, the charger light is faintly flashing green and amber?!?!

My mac randomly turned off last night had some trouble with an uncertified usb cable that I was trying to charge my iphone 5S with but it came up with that message of not being able to charge with this accessory or something so i plugged it into my mac thinking it was my plug to charge my phone then like 5 mins later my mac just randomly turns off and it did have like 90% batt but i still plugged it back in thinking it was just being wierd but then i pressed the power button after it being plugged into my mac and it wouldnt even turn on no fan starts or anything and now the colour of the charger light is very faint and is almost flickering between green and amber, please help me out I dont want to pay loads of money for something that I might be able to fix?!?!?!

    I actually just fixed it.  Here is what to do;
    1. Unplug everything from your computer.
    2. Take off the bottom of your MacBook / Pro / Air.  (There are usually 3 screws that are longer than the rest near the vent, remember where they go.)
    3. Carefully unplug the battery from the logic board.
    4. Wait 10 seconds.
    5. Plug the battery back into the logic board.
    6. Put the bottom cover back on.
    7. Reboot the computer holding the "Option" key.
It's not exactly what I did but it should work.  If it doesn't work, what I really did was unplug the battery and then plugged my charger into the computer, the fans started spinning and then it shut off again.  Then I plugged the battery back in, put the bottom on (with no screws), and tried booting up again.  The Apple chime played and then the computer shut off.  So I tried booting again holding the "Option" key and it booted up like normal.  I then restarted my computer to make sure it is back to normal and it is.
Wow what a relief.  I was really scared there for a minute.
*And for everyones information I was using a Belkin USB cable but it had never done that before.

My iPhone turns off whenever it goes into standby mode and has to be turned back on to work

That's normal behavior. It turns off automatically in order to preserve the battery. Pushing the On/Off button turns it on immediately. This also requires entering the passcode and prevents the phone from being accessed by anyone but you.

Doing those doesn't turn off your phone?
As stated hold down the top button only until you see the red slider to power off your phone.
If that doesn't work then take it to Apple and see what they say.
