Mac shuts down when I turn my external hard drive

Hello,
I installed Yosemite 2 days ago, and something when wrong right away: when I turned off my LaCie external hard drive, my 27 inches iMac immediately shuts down (I tried a couple of times), to restart a few seconds later. A message lets me know if I want to send a notice of the problem to Apple (which I did), and then everything is fine. Except its not, and whenever I turn off that hard drive (that is connected through thunderbolt), same thing happens. It never happened with the previous OS, so I hate myself right now for moving onto Yosemite.
Does anyone when through the same thing, and possibly has a fix ? Thanks.

Hmmm. Did you ever install any external software (i.e. some LaCie installer disk) or something? That's my guess, that you have 3rd party software (which is totally not necessary) which is incompatible with Yosemite and is causing a kernel panic. The solution would be to uninstall the software - it is never necessary to use 3rd party software to use a hard disk, and it can cause system instability and data loss.
If you don't know how find this out, you could download and run a program called 'etrecheck' (just Google it) and post the output here.

If it sounds like a RAM issue it could be one of the RAM chips has failed. You could try removing the RAM one at a time and see if it starts with one still installed.

  • Why does my computer slow down when I connect an external hard drive

I've been using a 2TB western digital external hard drive with USB connection.  It was working fine, but once it was up to 1.95TB, my macbook pro froze up.  Looking at my activity monitor,  my memory dropped to nil once the hard drive was connected.  The same hard drive works fine on my PC and I have no issues accessing all the files, just not on my mac. Any suggestions?

    Thanks Eustace,
When I disconnect the external hard drive, and look at the activity monitor, the memory climbs back up to about 4 to 6GB free.
    I have software system version: OS X 10.8.3 (12D78)

  • My mac shuts down when I turn it on

    I press the power button.
The start-up screen comes on, with the power-up chime.

Screen goes black and computer shuts down.
Happens each time I turn it on.
    Power source is good.
I don't know what to do.

  • My IMac shuts down when transfering files to a Hard Drive through USB

    Hi all,
I have been having trouble with my IMac. It's over 3 years old and I didn't actualized the operative system. Everytime I try to transfer files from the computer to a hard drive or pen drive (through USB), the computer shuts down. Sometimes it restarts, sometimes it gets shut. I wonder what's the issue and if getting a newer operate system (Snow Leopard maybe) will help.
    Thanks

Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • Turning off external hard drive

I just connected a Seagate external 300gb hard drive to my 12 inch Powerbook G4. I am wondering if there is an "order of operations" as far as turning the external hard drive off with the laptop?
The manual is not exactly clear to my understanding. It does mention dragging the external hard drive icon to the trash icon in my dock area but I think that is if I would like to DISCONNECT it from my laptop?
I am GUESSING that I would turn off the hard drive first THEN the laptop? Does anyone know if it matters, I do not want to damage the drive or any info on it.
Any info woul be appreciated, thanks in advance people!

wow, thanks so much for the all the comprehensive info! I appreciate the fact that you guys didn't leave anything out didn't assume anything! It makes things much more clear.
So it sounds like the jist is make sure that if I AM turning the external HD off to make sure I drag the external HD icon on my desktop to the dock FIRST in order to avoid potentially damaging or loosing files.
But what about turning the external HD and laptop ON? Is there also an order? I am assuming the external HD should be turned on first?
It would be nice if the external HD could turn on and off whenever I turn on/off my laptop but I doubt that is a possibility.
thanks again, looking forward to learning more!!!

  • Mac Finder Thumbnail Update Using Save-As External Hard Drive

    Hello:
I recently converted to an iMac and CS6 from PC/CS5.  In addition to the Mac OS missing some key file selection tools (like shift select for a range of files), I am having a big problem with thumbnail.  I recently sent a file to be printed that was edited in CS6 on the iMac.  The files were stored on an external hard drive connected direclty to the iMac.  The file I got from the printer did not match the image I sent.  I traced the problem to the fact that when using the Save-as function, the thumbnail was not updated.
I was able to replicate this problem at will.  As an experiment, I moved the file onto the internal hard drive and tried again.  This time the thumbnail did update.  Has anybody else had this problem?  Is this a Mac OS issue, or a Photoshop issue?
    Jamie

The problem with the thumbnails comes about when I have a jpeg, make changes to the jpeg, then save-as a file name that is already in the folder.  For example, imagine you have a file called myfavorite.jpg and it is a picture of a flower.  Later you find a jpeg of a bull dozer and try to save it to that same file as myfavorite.jpg.  The OS asks you if you want to write over the existing file, and you say yes.  when you go to that file in Finder, or try to open a file in bridge/cs6 which appears to also use finder, the thubmnail is still a picture of a flower.  If you do a Quickview of the file the bull dozer pops up.  Again, this is only when working on an external hard drive.  I am starting to consider that maybe it is the format of the hard drive (FAT32).
As far as I can tell the shift select method for selecting a range of files only works if you are not in thumbnail view, which is unacceptable for a phototgrapher.

  • HT1284 Can I back up my Mac and my pc to the same external hard drive?  If so, could you explain how? Thanks.

Can I back up my Mac and my pc to the same external hard drive?  If so, could you explain how? Thanks.  I am a new user with mountain lion.

You could partition the drive into 2 partitions.  One formatted as HFS+ for Mac OS X back, and one formatted as NTFS for Windows backup.
You would have to move the drive from system to system to do your backups.  If there are 2 systems, I would suggest just getting separate drives for each, unless they are both laptops, then you will be disconnecting the drives all the time anyway.
Unless Windows is running in a virtual machine on your Mac.  Then a partitioned drive would be fine.

    Thanks!

I called Apple Support and they walked me through it. They told me to basically copy and paste my music to the external hard drive. (I think.) Or maybe it was they had me transfer a folder to the EHD. I don't exactally remember it was a few years back. But I tried to plug in the EHD before starting and...nothing. Still says same thing, "locate file."

  • I have upgraded to Maverick when i connect an external hard drive my security does not scan it now

I have upgraded to Maverick.  With snow leopard when I connected an external hard drive, the Norton security would scan this drive. Since I have had Maverick this does not happen, I have updated my security.

How is the WD drive formatted and have you tried resetting the SMC?

    Hi robfromkinglake west,
Try and isolate the issue.  Check if it's only with this drive.
