Mac shuts down when it should be sleeping
The past couple of weeks my Mac has needed a restart after being in sleep mode - as if it's battery has emptied.
On restarting I see the battery at 88%-100% capacity.
This is an intermittent issue.
I did the usual Disk Utility checks and it reports 'probably ok'.
Should I be getting squirrely?
Try to reset the SMC and PRAM...

New MBPro running Maverick shuts down when it should be sleeping.
Not all the time, but enough to be very annoying. Upon opening the cover, unit is dead. Must hold down power button for 15-20 seconds to get start up sequence to begin. After re-start, displays message that unit was shut down improperly, or something to that effect. Energy saving preferences look OK. Any ideas?
Hello mainepod,
Thank you for the details of the isse you are experiencing with your MacBook Pro. I would be concerned about this too. I found an article with some steps you can take when your Mac is not waking from sleep.
I recommend reviewing the sections titled "Your computer cannot wake from sleep" and "Additional troubleshooting" in the following article for the issue you described:

Should G5 shut down when it goes to sleep?
I bought this G5 on eBay for a song (and I've been singing ever since) . It came without a disk, no accesss to the password and they had taken the Airport Card out. (Specks say it comes with the APCard) Serves me right I guess. Anyhow, It has always shut down right after it goes to sleep. Is there anything I can do to stop this? I work between two computers and sometimes I don't get right back to it. Restarting all the time is a real annoyance.
OK, the answer to the main question is "no" it shouldn't shut down when it goes to sleep. I would first open the Energy Saver panel in System Preferences and make sure that you have the machine set to never go to sleep. Here is a Tiger screen shot of that panel:
That should solve your immediate problem. The particular settings work very well for me, allowing me to put the computer to sleep from the Apple menu when I am not going to be using it for a while. You might also want to take a look at the "Schedule,,," area in the energy saver panel, as in this picture, to see that nothing is selected there.
Now, if the machine actually shuts down when you command it to sleep, then there are other issues we can work on. -
How come every time my Mac shuts down, when Iturn it back on,Garageband has to Re-Download the program files?
Check this article http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1547 and this one http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2341?viewlocale=en_US
If it sounds like a RAM issue it could be one of the RAM chips has failed. You could try removing the RAM one at a time and see if it starts with one still installed. -

IMac is shutting down when it attempts to sleep with 'hibernate image' error
Our iMac is shutting down when it attempts to sleep. This started following a Yosemite security update, though of course it is difficult to determine for sure that that was the cause.
In the console, the following message occurs before every shut down:
kernel[0]: Failed to get hibernate image filename
Suggestions? Does someone perhaps know what exactly the hibernate image is (we have a tiled screensaver that shows an iPhoto album -- could it be that one of those files is corrupt?) so that I can attempt to change it to see if that fixes the problem?
Thanks!
System: iMac (21.5-inch, Mid 2011), OS X 10.10.2
Already tried:
I reset the SMC by following Apple's instructions for this computer (turn off, unplug, wait, replug, wait, turn on)More information:
1. It looks like the crash/shut down is happening when the display tries to sleep (timing is 15 min after the beginning of automatic sleep).
2. When sleep is first initiated, I am seeing this in the console (not normal?):

My mac shut down when trying to download Combined Mac OS X- update
I recently bought Mac OS X Snow Leopard version 10.6.3, after installing the software I have also updated the software updates from my apple menu.
The Combined Mac OS X update 10.6.8 is the only update that will not download and my mac shut down my mac when its halfway downloaded. I notice that my mac/processor got extremely hot, so I thought this is the reason why the mac shut down. But even my mac is cold when I start, it still shut down half way in the downloading process and today the mac was also hot, but not as hot as last time as I started when it had not been in use.
Why is this happening? is it because the processor gets to hot or is it that my mac cannot download this?
I have even tried putting the mac in the window so it gets cold air, even near the freezer, it helps thew mac not getting too hot, but it still shut down, so I start to wonder if its something wrong other than its too hot??
What can I do? because I read that this download is recommended for all who has Snow Leopard and its necessary for the mac to be ready to upgrade to Mac OS X Lion.
My mac did not get so fast hot when I used Mac OS X Tiger version 10.4.9/10.4.11Ok that is good to hear though. I followed your link and first I got this message twice : "activation failed ". I tried again third time after filling up more quota to use and I thought it was going to be finish downloading, I am so disappointed my mac shut down only 4 minutes before it would be totally finish. Only a minute and it would be finish. I just have to try again.
I wonder something that worries me, every time a download fail does this mean I am wasting my quota I have paid for? does the quota goes in the trash so I have to buy more and more quota?
How can I know how much quota I have left to use, so I can be safe downloading without worrying buying more quota? is there a way to know this?
Is quota the same as disk space available? -
I have a macbook late-2009 and when I am in boot camp and my computer goes to sleep, it shuts down the computer and gives me an error that the hibernate file was corrupted. I am thinking that it might be the main battery or the CMOS battery.

Mac shuts down when 90% POWER and its PLUGGED IN!
I recently took over my husbands mac pro OS 10.4.11. At first, all was going well. Then I noticed one day, it shut down on me and I was like, that's weird, I had no warning. I did see other postings about this so it must be common or an issue with the battery. The thing is, its plugged in 100% of the time when I use it...if I do not have it plugged in, well, it shuts down after about 5mins...if that. I am not sure what is going on. Does anyone know (if it is the battery), roughly what a fix like this would cost? I read on other posts that you need the battery info, etc....this is what my mac says: Anyone have any idea just looking at this?? I greatly appreciate it!!!!!

No warning, no programs saying they will close, just went black. No hibernation, etc...I had to push the "on" button to get it back on...It's so frustrating. Almost like it has had enough and goes off or like it's dying....So even though the battery shows fully charged, it still just shuts off....and I can be in the middle of typing or web surfing, etc...it doesn't happen when I just have it on but not using it (like a power saving thing)..it shuts off even when it is actually being used. Mac shuts down when booting Recovery HD or holding down Command R
Ok, so I had Windows 7 installed on my MacBook Pro. I decided I wanted to get rid of it because I no longer needed it. I started to remove it via the Boot Camp Assistant when suddenly, my computer froze halfway through its' progress. I held down the power button and restarted my computer. I went to check back and Windows was gone. It only gave me the option to install Windows 7 instead of "Remove Partition". A few days later, I decided that I wanted to restore my mac to it's factory settings however, every time I held down Command+R or booted Recovery HD via the option key, the screen would go grey with the apple logo followed by the spinning icon underneath. After awhile, it would shut down. I boot it up again and it will only boot to the desktop. What should I do? Bootcamp assistant won't even open either. The icon flashes and then it disappears.
Just got this responce dont know if it works, havent tried yet

Re: Mac recovery doesnt work in response to Phatwo
Boot OS X Internet Recovery:
using three fingers press and hold the following keys: ⌘ (command), option, and R.
With a fourth finger press the power button to turn on the Mac.
Keep the other three fingers where they are until you see the "spinning globe" icon.
Your 2011 MBP will have required a firmware update to enable this option. It was released years ago so it's very likely you complied with it.
If your HD is damaged, it will require replacement. The effects of "repairing" it using Disk Utility will be temporary, at best. -

Why does my Mac shut down when using Safari?
Every once in a while (randomly) my mac will reboot due to an error even when I only have the Safari Application open. How can I stop my mac from doing this. I have the 2011 macbook pro 13 inch with the latest OS (Mountain Lion). Everything is up to date but why does it keep shutting down?
Hi Sebaz, first try repairing permissions. Go to Applications-->Utilities-->select Disk Utility. Select your drive then select the First Aid button then at the bottom right click Verify Disk and after it verifies your drive click on Verify Disk Permissions on the left. If there any errors click on Repair Disk Permission. Reboot your machine and test your Safari to see if the issue comes back.

Windown 8.1 shuts down when I click on Sleep/Hibernate
I have recently installed windows 8.1 and i have noticed that every time I click on sleep/hibernate, it shuts down the laptop and I loose all my work. Please provide a solution for this.
Thanks!every time I click on sleep/hibernate, it shuts down the laptop and I loose all my work.
In my case of this symptom, I think there is a correlation with updating, so if I can remember to, I may try preventing network connections too. I have also threatened to try using Scheduling to prevent unattended updating. That was for Surface
RT which explicitly does not allow a simpler GPO solution. However, now that I have seen the same problem happen on Surface Pro I guess I should at least try the GPO solution on it. Thanks for the reminder. ; )

GPEdit finds in Configure Automatic Updates "Note: This policy does not apply to Windows RT."
</quote>
According to Event Viewer there was some kind of automatic updating done on my Surface Pro this morning and some kind of power problems but these details are even more obscure than they were on the Surface RT. I should probably enable the same "highly
detailed status messages" on the Surface Pro.

Why does my i mac shut down when sizing photos?
I have a new 27' i mac with 2t drive and 16 gigs of ram the Pentium i5 quad core 2.8 ghrtz computer running OS 10.6.7. I have the Adobe Master collection CS5 installed and when sizing photos in photoshop my computer shuts down completely. It crashes the computer not just the program.I have re-installed all software including the OS twice. I have all the latest updates installed.
I have tried using earlier versions of the OS and still have the same problem. One apple tech said there was a letter put out by Adobe in January talking about a conflict with Adobe CS5 and mac OS 10.6.7 but I can't find it. I am also having problems online when filling out online forms or copying and pasting can turn it off as well. Has anyone run into this or similar problems.I took my computer to the apple store and they tested the hardware for a week and they did replace the power supply but said they could not find anything else wrong and that the ram was ok too. They said the stressed my computer to the max and could not produce the errors that I could do be sizing a 2mg photo.I've been trying to get this fixed for months.
One apple tech said that the error message when he saw it crash said it happened in Quartz? I think thats what it was. They reinstalled my OS to an earlier version and thought that might fix it until Adobe came up with a fix. When I got home I found they installed the wrong version of OS. They walked me through a few downloads to put my computer on 10.6.6 they thought the10.6.7 was the issue but its not. -

Using a global for device handle
I am wondering if it is a good or bad practice (or perhaps doesn't matter) to keep the handle of an open device as a global variable. See image below for example: www.vartortech.com
