Mac shutting down during backups to iomega hd

I have a 27" iMac and am using an Iomega hard drive for backups. The Mac has begun shutting down witout warning seemingly during regular Time Machine backups to my Iomega external HD. Prior to isolating the HD I had no clue as to what might be causing it and have spent several hours on successive days with a senior technician trying to solve the mystery. Hardware failure was suggested, but reinstalling Mavericks was done as diagnostic measure. I became suspicious when I noticed that the machine would begin a backup and stall after about 15 Kbyte into 80GB backup.  I got the idea of ejecting and unplugging the external drive and backing up to the internal HD as a means of making sure that the act of backing up itself wasn't the problem. The backup completed successfully and the machine was allowed to rest for awhile to make sure it would go into sleep mode without shutting down. When it didn't shut down and was going into sleep mode on schedule without problems I then manually shut down the computer, plugged the external drive back in and turned on the power. I then restarted the computer. The external drive was detected and all files could be found. After letting it rest awhile, going into sleep mode and awakening properly after button push, I performed a file transfer from the external drive to the internal drive which was a success. I'm presently backing up regularly to the internal drive without problems. Though it would seem that the external drive might be the cause of the problem, the fact that it's obviously not corrupted and can communicat through manual commands makes me suspect that there is something wrong with the operating system. I don't recall that I was having this problem prior to installing Mavericks. My case with Apple Care is still open and I will be speaking to the senior tech when he is back tomorrow. Has anyone else done any trouble shooting that I haven't tried or come up with similar results?

  • My mac shuts down during safe mode?

I tried using safe mode for the first time because I needed it to fix another problem. I shut down my mac and pressed shift as instructed. The apple logo appears and the spinning symbol. Then the progress bar appears and about 1/3 of its progress, it disappears then my mac shuts down. I tried restarting it without holding down the shift key but it results in the same way and I can't get it to boot at all now! Please help.

    I sense a HDD problem.
Try booting the MBP into the recovery partition.
From the 4 option menu, select Disk Utility.
Run Disk Utility>First Aid, Verify and Repair.
If the HDD cannot be repaired it will have to be replaced.
    Ciao.

  • Mac shuts down during startup after removal AppleSetupDone in Terminal, can I fix this ? 'touch' didn't help.

Hi, first of all thanks for reading, and I apologize for fooling around in Terminal.
I followed a method to remove applesetupdone in terminal, in order to enter the menu to create a new admin account. I had done this before on a computer that was given to me and it had worked very well. This time it didn't, though. I know I used a different website this time, I'm pretty sure the previous one made use of sudo, this one didn't.
I must have done something wrong. Perhaps when I followed a hint that came up inside terminal that told me to load something, because what I wanted was impossible / read only.
In any case my MacMini (1.83 ghz, Snow Leopard) starts up and shows the grey apple logo and the progress 'wheel', then shuts itself down. It does not mount when I connect it to my macbook with firewire. I can still get into sum / terminal but I don't know what to do. I tried 'touch' to restore applesetupdone but it didn't work.
I would really appreciate any help.
    Thanks in advance!

Humm.. you'll need to startup from your System Install Disc to test, repair or restore from Time Machine.
Some options for Starting up from your Install Disc include:
    1. in an External Optical DVD Drive.
    2. from another iMac in Target Disk Mode.
    3. from a copy on a Thumb Drive or External HD.
It's to bad that you are using Time Machine on the second HD instead of a clone with Carbon Copy Cloner - Home or SuperDuper! that you could boot from for testing, repairing and/or restoring.
If none of the above helps?
There is one good thing about a Mac Mini, it is much easier to tote into the local Apple Store or AASP than an iMac. see > Apple - Support - iMac - Service FAQ

    Hello,
Have you blown the dust out lately?
Get Temperature Monitor to see if it's heat related...
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/12381/temperature-monitor
Open console in Applications>Utilities, check the system log for the date/time of the last problem  & the Startup right after that for clues.

  • Mac Pro shuts down during sleep

My Pro sometimes shuts down during sleep.  Nothing will wake the machine and it it not accessible by another other computer on the network.  It has to be manually re-started using the button on the back of the computer.  There are no error messages on re-start.
I have reset the SMC and PRAM but it makes no difference.
    Any ideas?

Perhaps some third-party software that you had previously installed needs to be updated to be compatible with the latest OS X updates.
Perhaps some hardware component is experiencing problems; even the best hardware fails occasionally.

  • Macbook Shuts Down During Video Playback

My computer has begun to shut down unexpectedly when I am watching a movie. I watch about 20-30 mins of a show/movie/other video and my computer will shut down completely, whether it is plugged in or not. My computer is an early 2008 macbook, 4.1, running osx lion. My battery condition is "replace soon" and my fan has gotten quite loud over the past year or so. Any ideas on how I might fix this problem? New Battery? New charger? Internatal cleaning?
Thank you very much to everyone.

    Hello,
I am having this very same issue. It shuts down during startup. I can boot into Windows, and using the Leopard startup disc, Disk Utility could not work any magic. I do not have a second Mac or access to one for any backup purposes. I have no idea what else to try, does anyone know something besides backing up through firewire, on how I can either save my computer's data or resurrect the drive? Thank you for your help.

  • MacBook Shuts down during startup

My MacBook started acting slow the other day and then today when I started it up, it was in a constant lock up with a spinning pin wheel. No force quit commands or anything would work. So, I restarted it and now after the Grey screen with the Apple logo, the MacBook shuts down. The only thing I can get running is by holding C with the Leopard disc in there.
I tried to run Disk Utility from there but everything failed. I'm assuming I need a new hard drive? Is there anyway to save data from within the Leopard disc bootup? Maybe over a network?
    Thanks

  • MacBook Air shuts down during boot

My Macbook Air (OS X Yosemite - Early 2014) automatically shuts down during boot, with the screen flashes during the loading bar at 40% and then shuts down. I've tried to reboot many times but it wouldn't get past the 40% on the loading bar.
I've also tried the following but none worked:
The Apple Hardware Test shows that "There may be an issue with a memory module." (PPM002, PPM003, PPM004) - though I've checked that the reference code and the definition doesn't match, as "There may be an issue with a memory module." should be PPM001, and PPM002-PPM015 should be "There may be an issue with the onboard memory.". I've sent this message to Apple and they'd only provided the option to visit their retail store.
Also, the Recovery Mode isn't much help either. As do not have a backup of my HD, I'm not able to restore from Time Machine Backup.
So, I've tried to reinstall OS X Yosemite, but it says "Unavailable to install OS X". A website online says that you can resolve this issue by correcting the date through terminal, but the basic menu bar won't appear, in which I'm not able to access Terminal during the Recovery Mode.
Therefore, I've also tried the Disk Utility, which it shows it can't be repaired, with the following messages: Invalid Node Structure (4, 57963), and 2 messages regarding the Invalid Extent Entry (4, 47013) and (4, 40808). The Single User Mode with the command fsck -fy yields the same message.
Is there any other options then to visit the Apple Retail Store?

      Invalid node structure
I'm pretty sure you need more then Disk Utility to repair the drive.

Assuming you have Snow Leopard installed, you can try reinstalling the Mac OS but you'll have to do this from another Mac.

  • Re: Restoring windows after sudden shut down during updating

    Hi everyone,
Last night I was updating my windows on my Toshiba laptop, however, my laptop had a sudden shut down during the updating process.
Now when I start my laptop, I am prompted that a system error occurred and I have to insert my windows CD to continue. I never got a windows CD, and nor have I made a recovery disc yet, so is there any possible way for me to log into windows again? I am using windows Vista.
    Any suggestion would be grateful.
    Thanks in advance

    hi dDk,
what is the first rules of using a computer?
*never touch a running system* and of course: *read the f... manual* and *make backups often*
ok this was a bit hard... but this is a common failure to make an update without saving....
now lets see what we can do....
    - i assume that there is no possibility to start in safe mode...
    - hdd recovery is not possible...
    - you have neither a systemdisk of vista nor a system backup
now you are in operators hell....
    - see a servicepartner and ask for assistance, for a small fee he is able to setup your original system
    - get a vista/win7 istallation cd and install it, be aware you loose your hdd backup funktion!
    - try to repair with a "system-on-a-disc" like winpe or bartpe
    - try to make the hidden recovery partition visible to a os booted from cd and run recovery agent from there
if you killed your recovery partition.... bad luck

  • When i open programs as NetBeans my mac shuts down, and then i can't boot it

Okay so to be more precise, about 1-2 months ago my mac started to do weird things. Whenever i opened webcam or some other programs my mac shuts down, and then i would not be able to boot it up again, so i had to try to boot it in safe mode, resest NVRAM and all of that.
If i try to boot it up normally it starts fine with the apple logo, then its changing into a clean white/grey screen, and if i try to boot it up in safe mode it becomes blue.
The funny thing is if i keep to try to boot it, then it will eventually boot up, but still i can't use my programs for school (For an example NetBeans for my programming)
At first i thought it was my harddrive, so i bought a 120GB SSD Samsung EVO and installed Snow Leopard. But it still ****** up (Tried to update it to Maverick, still didn't do anything)
So i'm out of ideas of what to do.. Please help
    (I have a MacBook Pro Mid 2010)
    Sincerely,
    Frederik Bang

    This is from step 2
In step 2 i can't find anything like .crash
I did it under Diagnostic and Usage Information --> System Diagnostic Reports.
There's a lot of PluginProcess and powerstats.
I even tried to filter with .crash and crash, but only 2 lines of something showed up when i tried "crash"

  • Mac shuts down? Already updated firmware.

My MacBook has been fine since I bought it in May 2007. However, today I had left my MacBook on and plugged in, while a read a book. I turned to my MacBook, and Firefox had shut down. I wasn't sure why, but I just opened it back up. I left my MacBook again, positive I left it on, and when I came back, it (my Mac) was off. This happened twice today. Maybe it's Firefox, it was open both times my computer shut down, but I haven't updated it, or my Mac today or yesterday.
I'll update this post as needed.
EDIT: Forgot to add that I never saw my Mac shut down. I am almost positive I left it on though.

Is it plugged in when you do this or running on battery? What firmware update are you talking about?
Check and see if you have battery update 1.3 installed. You should find it at the location listed. Right click on the bundle and check *Get Info* a window will open and you can check the version there.
    MacBook/System/Library/SystemConfiguration/BatteryUpdater.bundle
Leopard(10.5.1) and Tiger(10.4.11) installs it. It is the MacBook Pro update.
If it is 1.3 drag it to the trash and then reboot. After you reboot you will be able to empty the trash. Once you have done that run software update and it should install Battery Update 1.2. You should reset the SMC (System Management Controller) after doing this.

  • Mac shuts down

I had trouble a few months ago with my mac shutting down or going into sleep mode. Several people gave great advice on things to delete in finder (like cookies and some other things). I need to do this cleanup again but my thread won't come up on my past threads!
It was a 'normal' maintenance cleanup that included emptying the cache and deleting a few things in the library.
Can anyone suggest what this may be? Or help me find that old thread?
I thought I had copied the list of things to periodically delete but can't seem to find it.

OnyX is a free download that can do all the cleaning that should ever need doing. But, if you are having some need to routinely do any cleaning there must be something wrong that really needs the attention. The Mac OS should not require this kind of attention unless there are underlying problems.

  • Mac shuts down if I do not keep either the Fn, Command or control button held down ?

Hi. I have a mac book pro late 2011 model. I am running Mavericks but but I have a problem where my mac shuts down if I do not keep either the Fn, Command or control button held down. Also if/when this shut down happens I need to hold the shift-control-option keys to restart the mac.
Anybody got any advice for me ?
    Many thanks
    Paul

    Try resetting the SMC.

  • Mac shuts down after 10 Min.

My mac shuts down automatically after 10 Min., I must sign in again and the movie or whatever I just watch is still on in the back.
How can I prefend this cutoff?
I read all the comments, but no help. Even if I turn off the Mac or unplug it, it does not help.

No, did not help. I take it to the store. Thanks anyway.
