Mac Sleep Timer (through 'Energy Saver' in System Preferences) won't work

Hello,
I have a MacBook (13-inch, Mid 2009) running Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.3,
and it has been installed with the latest software updates possible.
(The latest update is the 'Security Update 2010-003')
Previously I was using Mac OS X Leopard 10.5 on my MacBook,
and I can vaguely remember the timed computer sleep through Energy Saver would work.
That is, when the counter's time matches the amount of time I specified (e.g. 10 minutes), the computer enters sleep mode and displays a pulsing power light.
After upgrading to Snow Leopard I can barely remember the scheduled computer sleep will work as I don't really notice how it sleeps / I will shut down my MacBook before I go to bed.
==========
However, last night I was really tired and slept in front of my MacBook unconsciously.
When I woke up, I found that my MacBook didn't display a pulsing power light but a continuously-growing power light.
I tapped the trackpad and the display turned on, so I knew that my MacBook didn't go to sleep a whole night.
*What that means is that the Sleep Timer (through 'Energy Saver' in System Preferences) won't work.*
But the timed display sleep DOES work.
==========
After spending a whole day Googling,
I found that there are plenty of people suffering the same problem as me, although their Macs and OSs vary.
I also found an official support page from Apple concerning the related issue:
Mac OS X: Why your Mac might not sleep or stay in sleep mode
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1776
I tried the following methods but still can't resolve the problem:
_- boot my MacBook in safe mode_
_- use the 'Disk Utility' to repair Disk Permissions through booting my MacBook from the Mac OS X Snow Leopard Installation DVD_
_- reset NVRAM (Intel-based) (as PRAM is used by PowerPC-based Macs)_
_- reset SMC (System Management Controller)_
NONE of the above-mentioned methods can resolve the problem.
Althought I am sure that the Spotlight isn't indexing the hard drive, and I just start my computer and do nothing and wait for the scheduled computer sleep, the scheduled computer sleep just won't work.
In the other Mac forum, I saw someone suggest installing an application called PleaseSleep:
http://www.dragonone.com/products/macosx/pleasesleep/
It works.
But I really want to find out what caused this problem as this is a function shipped with Mac which is expected to work normally.
What's more, Apple is claiming to be a green Apple, right?

Looking forward to your replies! Thanks in advance!

Found this discussion by googling "com.apple.systempreferencescouldn't find any matches"...
One month ago I bought a brand new Macbook Pro 13", and after a couple of weeks I realized it wasn't sleeping on its own when it should, per the system preferences. (I did sleep when I chose "Sleep" in the menus or closed it... It just wouldn't sleep on its own, while open.) What was extra frustrating was that it was intermittent... It would sleep on its own maybe 1/3 of the time, but other times it would NEVER go to sleep. I deleted PowerManagement.plist, reset the SMC, etc... No luck.
I took it to the "geniuses" at the Apple Store, and the guy took all of five minutes trying to diagnose the problem. When my MBP wouldn't sleep on its own, he promptly replaced it with a new one. That was nice, but I actually would have preferred that he diagnosed and fixed it. (I think the store was so swamped with people coming in for service that day that they were doing anything they could to close cases and get customers out of there ASAP.)
Now, sitting here with my 48-hour-old MBP, I still have the problem. The other one was so new that I had barely put anything on it yet. The only applications I had put on it were MS Office for Mac 2011, Firefox, Chrome, and Adobe Flash Player. I've put Office and Flash Player on this one, but not yet Firefox or Chrome. That's it. No other customization or fancy business.
I looked into the Console just now, and I see the "Couldn'tfind any matches" entry popping up again and again. The last three seemed to pop upright around the time when my MBP should have gone to sleep on its own, but not down to the second, so it's hard to definitively point at that and say it's it for sure.
They need to fix this!!

  • Energy Saver Freezes System Preferences

I am unable to put my G5 Power Mac to Sleep. I have attempted to make adjustments through Energy Saver but any changes freezes System Preferences. The spinning wheel begins and I need to Force Quit System Preferences. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance

First, Try using Disk Utility to do a Disk Repair, as shown in this link, while booted up on your install disk.
You could have some directory corruption. Let us know what errors Disk Utility reports and if DU was able to repair them.

  • The Energy Saver in System Preferences has no effect.

    Hi,
I have my Energy Saver preference set to turn off my monitor after 20 minutes of idle time.  But the display never goes off.
Energy Saver used to work, now it doesn't and I have no idea why not, or what changed.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!!

Perhaps you have some process keeping it awake for some reason.  Have you installed any new stuff recently?
    Try smc and pram reset.
Open terminal and copy/paste the following line, hit return, post the results:
    pmset -g
Also post the files in the following places:
    your login items
    ~/Library/LaunchAgents (in your home directory)
    /Library/LaunchAgents
    /Library/LaunchDaemons
    /Library/StartupItems
And again in terminal the output from the following line (copy/pasteand hit reutrn):
    kextstat -kl | awk ' !/apple/ { print $6 $7 } '
Maybe some of this info will indicate a possible culprit.

  • I DELETED MY ENERGY SAVER FROM SYSTEM PREFERENCES !!! HELP!!!!!!

Today while checking out my new leopard operating system, I noticed how in the finder window there is a history option on the left. At first I thought it was just like internet history and I was just clearing the list. I trashed it....and now my ENERGY SAVER is gone from my system preferences. I accidentally deleted it without realizing it. Does anyone know how this can be recovered!?!?

OK, well in that case you must have lost everything that was listed in the smart folder. See the following about file recovery:
    Basics of File Recovery
If you simply put files in the Trash you can restore them by opening the Trash (left-click on the Trash icon) and drag the files from the Trash to your Desktop or other desired location. OS X also provides a short-cut to undo the last item moved to the Trash -press COMMAND-Z.
If you empty the Trash the files are gone. Recovery is possible but you must not allow any additional writes to the hard drive - shut it down. When you delete files you erase only the directory entries, not the files themselves. However, the space occupied by the files has been returned to the system as available for storage. Writing to the drive will then eventually overwrite the space once occupied by the deleted files in which case the files are lost permanently. Also if you save a file over an existing file of the same name, then the old file is overwritten and cannot be recovered.
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten with recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro. Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.

  • MacBook Air suddenly doesn't recognize my keychain passwords. Now iCloud, Safari and anything associated (including Systems Preferences) won't work.  Plz help - any ideas?

The only thing I can think that I've done differently is that I'd downloaded a scanner driver from Canon.  Everything worked fine for days after that.  It wasn't until I shut down the computer and restarted it that I keep getting these prompts to enter keychain passwords and it rejects the only passwords I've ever used.  No idea what to do.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!  :-)

    HI,
Try troubleshooting the Safari .plist file.
Quit Safari (Command + Q) Open a Finder window. Select your Home Folder in the Sidebar on the left. It has a small house icon. Then open the Library folder then the Preferences folder.
Move the com.apple.Safari.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Desktop. Launch Safari. Go to Safari / Preferences or Command , (comma) on your keyboard. If the Safari pref pane renders correctly, move that .plist file to the Trash.

My energy saver in system preferences is unlocking itself whenever I restart or start my iMac (Snow Leopard). It never used to do that and I have no idea why it's doing it now. Does anyone have this problem and solved it? Thank you!

Hello,Sorry but Neil is partially incorrect,in System Preferences click on Security and make sure "Require password to unlock each System Preference pane"is checked off.Once this is checked off then everything will stay locked regardless if you log in or out of your Admin. account.

iBook g4 only sleeps on battery power. Other than putting never sleep in the energy saver what else can be done?

Do you mean it will only go to sleep when running from the battery? Or do you mean it won't do anything except sleep when running from the battery?
You could try resetting the PMU. The PMU has control over the Sleep function, so resetting it may help.

  • Attempting to set Screen Saver causes System Preferences to crash

EVERY time I go to the System Preferences and try to set the Screen Saver, System Preferences crashes
I moved the .../user/library/preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist.saved and com.apple.systempreferences.plist files out of the directory to my desktop and the problem still happens.
What can I do? Is there a way to remove the screen savers one by one and see if one of them is the cause? Or is there perhaps some other problem?
I get crashes in iPhoto, iWeb, Mail, iCal, Address Book, and Safari, too, but much less often. Is it just bad hardware?

From your articles I found a reference to Yasu for Mac OS 10.4. (I tried about 5 other things first to no avail...)
Running Yasu in it's default configuration fixed my problem, made my system boot faster after that first reboot, and seems to have given my entire MacBook a nice theraputic massage.
Some items that seemed slower at first after running Yasu are:
    image caches in applications
well, lo and behold! caching of anything in applications. Which is what SHOULD happen since Yasu wipes out caches. With that understanding, I can say that running Yasu is going to be the first thing I do whenever I am trying randonm fix-its on weird problems.
    Thank you, Dr. Smoke!
    Thank YOU Ferd II!

I’m trying to follow HP’s instructions to add a driver for HP Color Laserjet CP 1215 which is connected to my Time Capsule. However, in System Preferences I can’t “add” the printer to the print queue because I don’t have a driver and you have to select a driver before the add button becomes active.  Therefore, the Mountain Lion software update doesn’t add driver software for the CP 1215 driver because I was unable to add the printer to the print queue.

This printer doesn't seem to be supported in ML:

You could try the 1515 driver or use the Generic PostScript Printer PPD when adding the printer.
    Hope this helps.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
I have seen a lot of cases like your issue, and it's easy to solve.
First, open Disk Utility, select Macintosh HD in the sidebar and repair permissions. Sometimes, a permission can be damaged and it makes that an application doesn't work properly.
If that doesn't work, open Finder, select Go menu > Go to Folder, type ~/Library/Prefereces, delete "com.apple.desktop.plist" and "com.apple.systempreferences.plist" and restart

It may well be a driver issue but considering the loading: Xorg trying to load different drivers is somewhat normal. @cafe you can see that these are autoconfigured by X above the loading in the log:

Nope. I do the same exact thing. If you have DVD's and blu-rays you can't download a free application called Handbrake. You can set it to Apple TV2 automatic format and they will come out as playable m4v's that can play I'm iTunes. All you have to do is turn on Home Sharing in both iTunes and your Apple RV and you'll be good to go!

I have the same problem. Unfortunately, the troubleshooting link you added has the first step listed as "Verify that FaceTime is enabled in FaceTime > Preferences" which we (the original poster and I) can't do as our Preferences are greyed out. We can't click on them to verify anything.
In FaceTime itself it's verified my apple id (also double checked via the site) and then it says the email is "verified" but then it freezes and after a minute or so it says "Could not verify the email address. Please check your network connection and try again."
After checking the network connection, it still doesn't work. It's rather frustrating as it all worked fine until about a week or two ago.
    Any help would be appreciated.
